BMW needs to offer the Diesel here in the USA. Is diesel for everyone? No, of course not. But I believe that there are people who want a performance car with excellent handling, is fun to drive, and is attractive, but they also want something that is fuel efficient, that's reliable, there's plenty of places to service the engine when needed, etc. If you can afford the cost of diesel fuel, you should be allowed the option of a diesel powered car. :)
The US 328d is the equivelant to the European 320d as far as I can tell, what doesn't make any sense to me, is that when I check the US website, their 328d is set to do 31mpg in the city where as the european 320d is set to do 44mpg in the city... same engine specs and both AWD... rather odd imo, can someone enlighten me on this matter?
Martin Nysom Nielsen If you were looking at the UK car, they use gallons that are 125% in size versus ours. So 44mpgUK == 35 mpgUS. (Also that number comes from the European test track which is inflated 20-30% higher than EPA numbers.)
Chanse, I hear you about the lack of manual but diesels are a bit different with the low end torque. Throw in the short shift 8 speed tranny and a manual would be a disaster for this car.
GreekboyyD, I don't think you have driven a manual diesel in a while. We own both a 2010 VW Golf TDI manual and a 2011 Golf TDI Auto. The 6 speed manual is nicely mated to the low end torque and I can accelerate quickly shifting at 2000 rpm...and although the EPA rates the highway mileage as 1 mpg higher with the auto, in real life the manual easily exceeds the auto by about 4 mpg when comparing similar routes. I am averaging 42 mpg overall with the manual and we are getting "only" 36 mpg overall with the auto. This car would be PERFECT with a manual transmission option...
I am looking at the BMW in Sweden and no 328d but 320d touring specs sheet shows 184 hp from the 2.0L twin turbo engine so why it is 180hp in the USA for the 328d? it should be higher I think? the 325d makes 218hp, are you sure it is 328d or are you sure it is 180hp?
That's a big jump, you just went from a very nice 50,000$ car to an unimaginative 20-25,000 car. If your looking at this car, why would you even consider a Subaru?
Looking at a used car website. 3 years old with 35k miles and is selling for $25k USD. Many for sale at similar price and miles. Lost half its value in 3 years. Might be a good buy at this price.
I've been hiding out in plain sight, police1184! :) Keep an eye out for Ain't Fuelin' videos to start showing up in the MPGomatic channel once the weather starts to warm up a bit.
Very nice car, but really pricey at twice the cost of a VW Jetta Sportwagon TDI. Still, I'd like to see this diesel engine in the BMW X1 if they can keep it under $40k.
@huss1205: BMW North America likes marketing their cars with higher model numbers. World 320d = North American "328d" World 530d = North American "535d"
huss1205 It's 180-hp because the US doesn't use metric horsepower. 1 kW = 1.360 metric horsepower 1 kW = 1.341 horsepower (US/UK) So the (320d/328d) could make 180 or 184 horsepower depending on the conversion you choose to use.
NIAtoolkit Thanks for the response but I know what KW and hp are. I am not arguing for the 4 hp difference between 180 he mentioned in video and the 184 in specs sheets. The gentleman up there, Mike, answered me, it's about marketing names no more. Thanks again!
NIAtoolkit Thanks for the heads up. I looked at the UK spec sheets and saw that difference and said to myself, 'Why don't they just offer the V6 version here?" Difference between the engines is 160kW (UK) vs. 190kW (UK). I'd take the engine upgrade in a heartbeat.
My friend bought one despite the fuel price difference. Over a whole year she still saved around 1200 Canadian dollar after a regular 40k per year millage for her and her partner who drive an audi A3. The most significant different according to her is when she adds more people into the car or some loads the fuel economy doesn't change that much compared to a gasoline powered car which is where she saved the most money from.
It is in fact an experiment conclusion. Since no one was able to reach the official number exactly, then we let drivers try to get the most fuel efficient with their skills. However, of course in this case which is a inline four, it is more efficient with manual and plus it is a diesel.
This guy is awful, and looks homeless. He doesn't exactly reflect a professional, well-put together website. I don't know why anyone would want him to represent them.
Daniel Gray Thanks for taking the criticism responsibly. I guess all I should say next time is "great job!" because it's not like we're adults who can handle hearing other people's opinions and try to actually take something away from them.
I've been putting it on the line since 2008 and have rolled up tens of millions of views, nyak63RUS. When it's time for me to die, I'll die knowing that I had the opportunity to live the dream and I'm ever thankful for it. Oh, and if you haven't seen Argo, I highly recommend the film.
Such an underrated car. It's so beautiful inside and out.
Bring Back The Manual Transmission 3 Series Wagon!!

Imperial gallon.

Such a nice car, i have a golf tdi and would like to drive this bmw to compare.
i do mostly highway driving and at 18k miles and almost at 43 mpg...
Just had a organsm. VW why u no do this?!
"A manual transmission is not offered."
And that's my interest flying out the door, destination: Subaru.
That's a big jump, you just went from a very nice 50,000$ car to an unimaginative 20-25,000 car. If your looking at this car, why would you even consider a Subaru?
You can on the RWD one, a lovely 6-speed and it is available in europe (equivalent = 320d) on the wagon and sedan
Would you say it could perform well in mountain passes with one person and one snowboard in it? Would i exhaust the 4 cylinder engine? Thanks!
Diesel costs the same as premium gasoline in the US???? waw ...
Premium gas in US is the equivalent of European 95 octane regular fuel. US regular gas is European (discontinued) 91-octane.
Not really. Diesel, right now, is about 10-15% cheaper than the 91-Octane.
Does depends a bit on states and season too, but in a year overall it is saving more than imagine.
It's America, what do you expect?
Looking at a used car website. 3 years old with 35k miles and is selling for $25k USD. Many for sale at similar price and miles. Lost half its value in 3 years. Might be a good buy at this price.
Did you purposely record it at 328pm
Do you get your money back at resale when you buy the diesel?
So this is where you have been Dan. Whats going on with MPGomatic?
I've been hiding out in plain sight, police1184! :) Keep an eye out for Ain't Fuelin' videos to start showing up in the MPGomatic channel once the weather starts to warm up a bit.

Yea the TDI is half the price, but definitely not half the car. Plus,,Maintenence pretty good on jetta
Michelle, I have driven a diesel manual recently. Have you driven one with 425 lb-ft of torque in it? There's a reason you don't find them in manual.
You do find them. In Europe, not US.
Regenerative braking? Did I hear that right? For what? Charging the battery? Is there no alternator? I don't get it.
@huss1205:
BMW North America likes marketing their cars with higher model numbers.
World 320d = North American "328d"
World 530d = North American "535d"
Thank you very much for the info but I just don't see the reason for that. Americans like it to be fooled by manufactures or what?
huss1205 Apparently that's what they think. But then I'm not sure why they didn't just call it "399d"...
huss1205 It's 180-hp because the US doesn't use metric horsepower.

1 kW = 1.341 horsepower (US/UK)

You can get away with a manual in VW TDIs and maybe even with the 328d. Anything more powerful than that it gets questionable.
Diesel fuel is currently $.90 more than gas. Erases the fuel savings.
+Bruno TaTa Not In America it's like 0.40 cheaper than gas

is this real?
@chanseorman just mad cause he cant drive manual
Must have. Now.
It may be a fuel efficient, but think it is expensive in service and insurance.
Nice but 56K sheez.
Yea the jetta sportwagen, while not a BMW, is half the cost ( but much more than half the car)
NO MANUAL TRANSMISSION YAAAAAAAY
yeap, at current technology the BMW can make their car more economy with auto than using manual.
Qiuyuan Chen Where did you get your info? That's completely untrue.
It is in fact an experiment conclusion. Since no one was able to reach the official number exactly, then we let drivers try to get the most fuel efficient with their skills. However, of course in this case which is a inline four, it is more efficient with manual and plus it is a diesel.
Chase Ormon, quite trolling! Manuals put the Man back in the drivers seat;)
DO I CARE Drivunda NO I DON'T SO STFU MANUALS ARE FOR PUSSIES AUTOS ARE FOR MEN!!!!
This guy is awful, and looks homeless. He doesn't exactly reflect a professional, well-put together website. I don't know why anyone would want him to represent them.
Thanks for the positively sterling endorsement, nyak63RUS. Gotta love the little blue trolls. If anyone's living under a bridge ...
