I have a 22' mk8R. It is handsdown my favorite car I've ever owned. I owned a 2018 TTRS before I traded it in for my mk8R, which is a close second. Many would call me crazy, some would understand. Was the TTRS faster? Yes. It swallows the highway. Did it sound better? Yes. And it had more road presence. But I hated it as a daily, it was expensive to maintain, and I hated the turbo lag and transmission in lower speeds (although I'm sure a tune would have solved that). Once I tuned my mk8R to stage 1 unitronic, it felt faster than the TTRS in stock form. TC launches are so quick it's nauseating. The TTRS hugs the road better than the mk8R in turns and felt more planted on the road. But the mk8R is the best for that in the hatch department. The TTRS also felt COOLER to sit in while the mk8R felt BETTER to sit in. The sound system also was suprisngly BAD in the TTRS. MY wife's 2018 Nissan Altima has a waaaaay better sound system (bose). To sum it up, the TTRS was great at a few things while the mk8R is GOOD at everything. The mk8R is a better overall ownership experience. 👍
Regarding the brake squeal: Assuming that the Golf R uses high performance pads, which have a harder compound. In that case, it's normal for them to squeak/squeal a bit. I had a Hyundai Kona N which was much worse than my new Mk8, but the noise tended to dissipate over time. IIRC, the Kona's manual actually stated that brake squeal was normal, and not a fault.
Great video, love your perspective. I have nearly identical except dsg- one thing I would say that if you do 'baby it' you will get a lot more than 30mpg- I have managed a shade over 48mpg on my trip to work (mostly motorway with some B road!
You said you were past due on oil change at 8mo/6,000 mile. Are you doing a short interval or what is the oil change interval on these R's? Im used to VW's 1yr/10k mile but thats on their "standard" cars too.
I can't remember which car magazine it was, but I remember reading the same thing you're stating about the Golf R: "the car is too nice".. So, if you could only choose one of your cars, which would it be, the WRX or the Golf R?
Just bought 2024 golf r white dsg. I have 0 issues with anything. Yes the lack of buttons are annoying for the first 30 seconds - just like smart phones ditching buttons? You just get used to it. Also once I have climate set and my music? I don't really fuck with anything just start up and go.. I do how ever have the same paint issues with chips but I own a 2022 supra and that thing is fucked with rocks so just par the course it seems with new vehicles lmao I also use wireless carplay android version? And it's legit perfect never had a single issue. Maybe the issue is your using a shit fuck phone lol also the price of the car is perfect. People complain but look around whay other car you getting like this? 10k less you get a wrx which is fully made of plastic and the engine will blow by just looking st it. Those new FA motors are shit. I have a hard time finding something else in this price range unless you go american but seriously.... 😅😅😅
Golf R in my area (Edmonton, Alberta) is at most 4K more than a Sport-tech. That’s for both the 6MT and DSG. Looked at the WRK but realized that it won’t fit in my garage along with our Edge. Looks like the R is pretty much my only “affordable” choice. Going to check out the R tomorrow.
@@Gonin60 i guess i got a bad unit then. my mk8 manual golf r only at less than 1k miles has tons of rattles and creaks in multiple areas and it is super annoying.

That's a very interesting overview! I agree both are great cars.
Agreed. I owned a 1000+ horsepower Audi RS3, and the MK7 and MK8 GTIs remain one of my favorite vehicles for what they can do.

Thanks for the video, Austin. Glad to hear you're enjoying your time with the car overall.
Thanks buddy!

Yeah I need to baby it on a road trip and I think I can do much better.
Cool review! Not the same car, but I'm debating between a WRX and a GTI for mostly city driving and don't necessarily need AWD.
Tough. I would go GTI

Do you have any interior rattles or creaks?
Not yet surprisingly
