I got my G8 yesterday. I upgraded from 2560 X 1080 LG IPS 65 Hz monitor, and I am absolutely floored by it. Insanely buttery smooth, and colours so vivid it feels like I was using a gray-scale monitor by comparison. Not much brighter than my previous monitor at 100% but smaller areas are crazy bright. The black is almost disconcertingly so

Don't forget to drop back in after the image retention starts to be annoying. And do write down how long you use it and for what app/game at a time.
      Like Day 1, played game 1 for x hours. game 2 for y hours, game 3 for z hours...etc..
      Cheers
edit: The QD oled is the worst possible tech of oled as you can confirm by the latest Rtings info. The image retention is quick to appear and even with those reset steps to help it out, it still loses quite fast to the image retention / burn in.

I recently bought the G8 OLED after watching this review and monitoring the price for a while (pun not intended).
Price dropped, bought the monitor and I admit, it looked incredible. For the 3 minutes I used it anyway. The unit I bought had the most intrusive "coil whine" i've ever heard, slicing through my head with different levels of amplitude and frequency depending on what was sat in the middle of the screen. So just a small warning to anyone buying one, if this happens to you - RMA it immediately.

For anyone trying to decide I can at least speak to the OLED G8 a little. I've owned 3 of them now (in an attempt to resolve issues with each) and whilst the monitor is generally excellent I'm not sure I'd buy it in its current state. I won't talk about the monitor's positives because I feel the review already covers those.
My first one has the bug where the volume increases by 1 every couple of hours. It also has a bug where it wouldn't detect a DP signal when turned on. So to be clear on steps: If I shutdown my computer and turn the monitor off with the power button on the remote, then turn the PC and monitor on (order doesn't matter) it won't detect a DP signal. To fix this I have to change the input to something else entirely, wait 15s for the monitor to say there isn't an input detected, then flick back to DP. I sent it back hoping both issues would be resolved.
My second monitor did NOT have the volume bug, which is great. However, it also has the issues with DP signal. At this point I tried a HDMI 2.1 cable instead. HDMI does not have the wake up bug but on the latest Nvidia drivers it has an even worse issue where the screen goes black for 1-2 seconds every few minutes when playing games. This issue doesn't occur if you use an older Nvidia driver and set the panel colour to 12 bit (even though it doesn't support 12 bit). This is an unacceptable compromise to me because I'm often playing newest releases that require the latest Nvidia drivers, so I sent it back.
My third monitor also doesn't have the volume bug which is leading me to believe this was fixed on later monitor revisions, though it could just be luck of the draw. However, this monitor unfortunately also the same issues described above regarding DP signal and HDMI blackouts.
Overall it's a real shame because these little issues are tarnishing what would be an otherwise absolutely excellent monitor.

the G8 amd hdr issue can be "fixed" by removing the Freesync range block via CRU, the monitor will fall back to Adaptive-sync VRR and use the regular HDR pipeline instead of freesync premium pro, allowing it to hit 1000 peak nits and have the possibility to enable HGIG (GameHDR), which was greyed out with freesync premium pro

However, if you’re on console, don’t bother with it with not having HDMI 2.1. You will only be able to play at 100 FPS with the HDMI 2.0 and won’t get the 175 FPS as a PC with DisplayPort. I can't understand why it's still being called "bad screen coating". That is one of my most favorite parts of that monitor since i DONT WANT an anti-glare coating that will just wash out all colors. I couldn't care less about reflections in my gaming room. It's just a matter of "what is right for you" and neither good nor bad and I would like to see a more neutral wording on that matter.

The coating is bad because it doesn't have a polarizer to limit light reflecting off the panel pixels, making contrast worse than 200 dollar ips monitor during daytime use, even if no light is directly on it. You want to use either of these panels close or in pitch black environment. If you want oled for the deep black, and plan to use it during daytime , then your options are LG tv or LG monitor. The monitor does not have a glossy finish .

    • @Kai-P
      @Kai-P ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@sogetsu60 Thats quite exaggerated. I have the OLED G8 and to agree with you I would have to define "daytime use" as using it outdoors when sun is shining and "pitch black" as a room lit with some hue bulbs at 100% behind the monitor.
Yes, using a BenQ Screenbar or other lights in front of and shining towards the screen does noticeably raise black levels, maybe even more than my previous IPS monitor. But a normally lit room with no light sources directly in front of the monitor do not raise the black levels anywhere near best IPS levels for me.

Connectivity is really weak on this one at least when it comes to USB extra ports. (and micro hdmi is anyoing)
They also got some problems where sometimes a rainbow line appears on the bottom but thats fixable with software.

Maybe it's just down to my individual setup/settings, but ever since I upgraded from a 2070 Super to a 6800 XT with the AW3423DW, I don't think adaptive sync is working fine nor properly. In most games at startup, the screen will flicker, the framerate starts quite low (say around 15-20) and would gradually go up to the max the system can in a span of a minute or two. In other games, espcially Fortnite, they would simply just crash after a while and will continue crashing until I disable adaptive sync, then it's fine. Also, there's a weird quirk (for lack of a better term) where I don't have the option to select a standard 16:9 1440p resolution without adding a custom resolution in the Adrenalin software.

Unfortunately, it's hard to get an Alienware that doesn't have fine scratches and smudges on the panel which can be seen with a bright light or torch. It appears to be due to the way they are packaged for shipping. Would be good if you could inspect the monitors for such blemishes as part of your review. Incidentally I also had the coil whine with the DWF - I had to keep the lights enabled at the back, otherwise the whine was very noticeable. I'm getting a refund for the DWF and am waiting delivery of the Samsung G8. Fingers crossed.

There are some issues though you should be aware of. The monitor will randomly fail to wake from sleep and it seems to lock up Windows when it does.
Some units also have a problem where the volume overlay will randomly pop up on screen without any input. My first unit did that, my second didn't.

I can see why you'd ask for a replacement if it happened often enough. Hopefully a future firmware update can fix those issues.
On another matter - as a fellow enthusiast who is pedantic about their screen, how do you keep the panel clean and free of dust? I've never had a quality screen before so never bothered thinking about this, but this purchase has changed that. 😊 I recently purchased this product (Flawless Screen Cleaner Spray with Microfiber Cleaning Cloth) after reading some positive comments in a forum. @dinospumoni8255 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@greenjoyce3001 I have a lot of experience with that. The best advice I can give you is try NOT to have to wipe the screen down with cloths/sprays if you can. So, keep fingers off the screen, try not to sneeze, or cough in the direction of the screen.
What I do when dust starts to build up is use an electric compressed air duster to blow off as much dust as possible. I use electric to save money on buying the canned ones. I think I bought one for like $30 off Amazon and I use that to remove as much dust as possible from the screen.
If there's some more stubborn dust or grime on it that doesn't come off with the air duster, then I'll extremely gently wipe the screen with a DRY microfiber cloth, I use the brand magic fiber (large sized ones) from Amazon as those are highly praised for high end camera equipment, and if those are good enough for cameras that cost thousands of dollars, it's good enough for the screen.
I try to avoid all sprays as much as possible because the coating on the QD-OLEDs screens tend to streak/smudge a lot with any liquids but if you do need to use some liquid, spray a little onto the fiber cloth, and as gently as you can, wipe off the grime in a circular pattern until you remove whatever was on the screen. I use this only for spot cleaning.
The spray I use is Calyptus Screen Cleaner, also from Amazon as it has no alcohol or ammonia which could damage screen coatings. I find it doesn't streak either, but glossy screens like the G8 will always have a bit of it, so as long as you wipe gently in a circular pattern it buffs right out without scratching.
TLDR: Try to keep hands off the screen, air dusters are your friend, only use spray + high quality fiber cloth as necessary for spot cleaning.

I use an Nvidia gaming laptop so the HDR1000 mode hack isn’t terrible for now. Hope Dell does fix it.
And with my luck, in Australia, JB HiFi just discounted the DW to basically the same price as the DWF from Dell. And Samsung just dropped the price of the OLED G8 here so it’s cheaper than the DW from JB. With that said, the DWF with the discounts from OzBargain was still slightly cheaper. I suspect its something that might develop over time, and really only noticeable when the room gets more on the quiet side. It would be nice to get an updated video showing what's changed. Most of these can be purchased for $700-$800 USD this time of year. I'm testing the G8 now and it has full size connectors on the back. I'm have no need to use any of the smart apps feates so I'm shopping for an alternative. The smart features are a real PITA for me because you have to turn the display on before starting your PC. The remote is on the same frequency of my Samsung TV so I cannot use either remote to turn either device on. 😢

I'm using OLED G8 for entertainment but productivity as well, mostly programming. I guess I kind of decided to test it. QD-OLED should be less prone to the burning in comparison to WOLED since the light intensity doesn't have to be so high to archive the same result. In any case I will update you when any kind of burning occurs but I don't expect it to be any time soon. Also I'm one of those people who barely notice font rendering inaccuracy. I'm kind of hoping the issue will be fixed by the OS at some point as these monitors are getting quite popular but so far it definitely wasn't something to discourage me from using the monitor.

PVE/AAA titles and VRR and now adding FMF2 or DLSS3+frame gen....and beyond...and playing maxed/fidelity games on oled/immersion can actually be a thing at an affordable range IMO. When looking at past msrp ranges for IPS 21:9 or even 240-360hz 1440p "flagsihps" by comparison...and IMO ips not actually being true fast response time for actual/competitive shooters over TN....oled is he perfect solution to response times, image uniformity for multiplayer...and color/rich gaming for AAA/maxed settings PVE titles. Even the slight recuction to response time or input latency will be so welcomed when using a controller on BT
