    Plouffe loves his Alienware AW3423DW monitor. It's got a high refresh rate, QD-OLED panel, nicely curved screen, and a great design... but now there's competition! MSI's new MEG 342C has a tasteful black and gold colour scheme, a nice touch of RGB, and a high-powered USB-C port while still maintaining the excellent QD-OLED panel the Alienware does. Is Plouffe's favourite monitor about to change?

      @@CheekSoda Surely that's problematic though as how often are you going to need to switch between multiple Windows PCs? More likely you want to switch to Linux, or a game console, so you still need to use the OSD to switch back.

      @@alexatkin The OS you're on is irrelevant as the KVM switch/macro should just switch between outputs.
      That's the case on my M34Q; I hit the button and it switches between DP for my PC and whatever I have plugged into the USB-C (my work laptop or even my phone with Samsung Dex). There's no reason to go into the OSD if you're just switching inputs.

    11:34 That is one of my favorite videos you got on display there, I absolutely love watching those tour videos or the like in a big high resolution screen and just relaxing. I watch a lot of bus tours and things like that after a long day at work cause I find it relaxing to just sit back have my meal and then turn in for the day. I personally can't drive anymore due to an accident and I used to like my trip to work cause it was a short drive through the valley or back roads and so this is kind of an extension of that. I miss those daily trips there was a river alongside near my place that I got to stop by and it meant I was near home.

Yet now I'm sat with an ips 1440p 165hz monitor which wasn't much more than my old 1080p one. I'll fully believe it when I see documentation that states it in writing, but this is claimed to have a 3 year warranty with burn-in coverage, at least according to MSI's own livestream for the release of this monitor. While it's 1100 USD, in Europe this has a 1499 EUR MSRP price tag (assuming included 20% tax). Very hard to swallow when it's competing against the Samsung OLED G8 (1299 EUR), Alienware DW (1199 EUR), DWF (1099 EUR).

      Indeed, I have the G8. And apart from the infinitely better ui the Msi has, there isn't a big difference.
      The G8 does have an external power brick and uses non standard cables.
      So overall the Msi does seem to be better but not for that price increase.

      @@SinisterSkip yeah, that's a good price, if it was 6+ months ago. Today, the 32" 4K 240 Hz monitors are now slowly becoming available on the market, and for me at least, the MEG 342C is no longer relevant. I think the I/O for this monitor is really good. I got the Samsung G8 OLED version of this panel and their I/O is MiniDP, MicroHDMI, USB-C (65W DP), and USB-C 15W and that's IT. Then they included a MiniDP to DP cable which would be fine with a GPU but I only had my laptop at the time so I had to go hunt down a Thunderbolt/high throughput USB C cable. Wish Samsung just included one of those or an HDMI cable instead as that seems more standard. But I will say having the USB-C inputs is really cool for sharing my keyboard and for DP/power delivery with my work laptop.

    Great video! I totally agree with you on UW, curve, and screws to secure monitor, even if it clips in. However, I disagree with you on brightness and height. The height you mentioned the posture ramifications, but the brightness is bad for your eyes. Several Techies recommend turning it down, not up. Better for your eyes long term, and you can play longer without eye fatigue. I have an older MSI 34" UW with 1800R, great initiation to the market, now I wish I had 1500 or 1000 R curvature. Oh well, I am not changing monitor as there is nothing wrong with it and it is still great for work and gaming.

      @@lakzerk2344 the black bars problem is a game and video dependant thing. On the OLED its actually not that bad because you wont have this "bright black" from lcds making the black bars very obvious. I play in a dark room and when the oled switches to 16:9 i cant see the rest of the monitor anymore as if it was 16:9 in the first place.
      Now nearly 1 year of extensive use later i start to nitice burnin especially noticable at the borders between 16:9 and 21:9. The "unused" outer part of the 12:9 is clearly brighter than the 16:9 overlap and with steam in fullscreen for example there is a noticable color difference resulting in a straight line from top to bottom on boths sides from "fullscreen" videos.
      With OLED the black bars are less of an inconvenience but still kinda frustrating if you cant use the whole monitor.

    My understanding when trying to look for info on this monitor a few months ago is that it has the same panel as both Alienwares (the DW and the DWF), the first of which was released a year ago. Supposedly there will be newer qd-oled panels coming out this year with better brightness and less burn-in. For this price (the same as the Alienware DWF model released a few months ago), it feels a little late to the party

    My Alienware one does have one small issue. I can see slight lines where the edge of 16:9 content would be. I can only really see them on flat colors and when gaming if I look for them. however its in my periphery and I forget about them instantly when I start playing a game. I've been using my monitor maybe 8 hours a day for about a year now. Don't regret my purchase at all. If the issue gets worse i still got 2 years to get a new one. That warranty provides nice peace of mind.

    • @SaltedSlug85

      I watch a fair bit of youtube, and most of that will be 16:9. So your comment has made me want to give up on these OLED's. I keep going back and forth, ready to pull the trigger on this one... then I read your comment.

    • @clownavenger0
      @clownavenger0 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SaltedSlug85 well the Alienware has a 3 year warranty that covers this stuff. I think TH-cam is what did it for me. I think it's just from one part of the panel having a lot more use than the other. I do watch 6 hour d and d sessions with mostly stagnant character portraits, stats, and stuff. I don't think normal burn in would be an issue but the ultra wide that's used for 16:9 does have a slightly different tint on the sides. Mostly noticeable on flat colors.. could send you a pic on discord or something if you wanna see it.

    • @SaltedSlug85
      @SaltedSlug85 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@clownavenger0 I figured this might happen. I thought if you do the full panel refresh it would basically reduce power to the pixels that aren't used as much. So they would match up with the middle but you lose brightness every time.. Permanently. Starting to sound like I'll use cheaper panels until microled is a thing.

    • @clownavenger0
      @clownavenger0 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SaltedSlug85 Yeah I only notice it when I look for it buts its a bit brighter on the sides. Well in 2 years ill prob be buying a new monitor either way so if it gets bad after the warranty period I got 3 good years of very heavy use.

    for those on the fence, this monitor is better than the alienware because it has KVM built in and logo dimming, something that the alienware lacks entirely, the logo dimming pretty much prevents the static elements from burning in, that feature is amazing and something that all OLED's should have
