      Those were the simpler times. I saw Outcast at a friend's house who had a decent enough computer to run it. I was in complete awe of the stunning 3D graphics and complex story of the game.

    Loved the original - the way the lore is built up as you progress, the music… just one of my top games. The dialog with the npcs just amazed me and still does - and poor Mogi! I kind of used the same tactics, laying dynamite before a patrol arrives. Also appreciate the comparison with the remake too - been debating getting it for a while. Thank you for giving attention to a game that deserved it

      Giving attention to games that deserve it is what I want my channel to be about! Because it's easier to hate on bad games, a lot of people forget that a lot of really great games are just sitting there waiting to be played. Hopefully videos like mine can eventually help games like Outcast reach a much bigger audience.

    Outcast 1.1 is the correct way of experiencing the first game. I absolutely adored this game and its world back in '99 (I still own my original big box with the CD-ROM and mousepad). There's something so special about the voxel graphics, they look so organic and alien and that is completely lost in the remake. Even though it's an ancient game by now, you can still clearly see the production values and budget were MUCH higher in the og game vs. remake. I sincerely hope Outcast 2 is a success, I want the series to continue.

      I was pleasantly surprised by A New Beginning. I had some worries going in that it wasn't going to come close to the original game. But even if it isn't the same technical marvel that its predecessor was, A New Beginning was still a ton of fun!

    • @BSzili
      @BSzili 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SwannyTheMike I enjoyed A New Beginning for the most part, but I think it missed the mark in a few of areas. I probably liked the writing the least, the last part of the game felt especially rushed. If nothing else it made me want to replay the original Outcast again.

    • @SwannyTheMike
      @SwannyTheMike  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BSzili Yeah, the last third definitely could have used more time to breathe. I think the weakest part overall for me was the weak writing on the human characters not named Slade. They all felt very underdeveloped for antagonists you were meant to empathize with. Which kinda undermines the ending being about peaceful co-existence.
      But when compared to the slapdash effort that is Second Contact, A New Beginning isn't simply a step in the right direction, it's a record-setting long jump! My hope is that they can keep up the momentum and Outcast 3 winds up being a GotY candidate.

      Second edition is definitely a different beast altogether. The range of settings to play in is unmatched. Personally though, 3.5 is my favorite, but that's entirely based off of my experiences with the video games. The voxel solution was one used by several games of the era to better simulate uneven terrain. As someone who was there for the OG, it was revolutionary at the time. And if you hooked your PC up to a CRT, this game looked better than practically anything else at the time.

      I don't doubt that this felt astonishing at the time. And your point about playing it on a CRT just adds to my bafflement about the Dreamcast port being cancelled. A game like this could have seriously helped move systems in 2000! (I think I read that the port was slated for 2000)

      1.1 is well worth your time. Maybe as a hypeup for O2...
      There are many small connections and references between the two games, so a good time to refresh your memory 😉
      I personally like Second Contact, but it did not have the time and budget to polish it.
      Thise new Systems should all have been optional and better integrated. Again main factor were ressources that were too limited.

      @PlanetAdelpha going to play 1.1 then. What is the difference of original vs 1.1? I had the original when first released back in 1999 and loved it even with it's faults. Still has the best intro than the remake. Why they didn't just use that is crazy and they should have made the model the same as the art of cutter like the original. The remaster has glitches and unfinished with the ending where he gets trapped down a hole, missing animation there haha, also a glitch when fighting at the okaar temple to save the talan being sacrificed where sometimes it glitches you half through the ground and the enemy are invisible or clipped somewhere haha. I wish they did a 1.1 on the remaster to spend some time fixing some glitches and animations and just touching it and polishing it a little more.

      @@indianastiltsthere are only minor technical modernizations like higher Resolution, better music quality etc. The Controlls were changed a little bit and you can use a gamepad if you want (not recommended).
      In terms of content and gameplay it is 100% the same.
      And you have steam achievements. Some of those are a little buggy, but I have co-written a guide to get 100% of them.
      In 1.1 the second bonus ending with cutter is possible without cheats if you do 100/100 quests.

    Great rundown! I'm really hyped for the sequel. THQ Nordic is one of the rare publishers that does right by the devs it works with, so I have faith that they can pull of their vision.
    As someone who doesn't mind jank in my games - I'll actually take Technomancer or Elex over Mass Effect any day - I didn't find the Second Contact that bad. Some sections of it - the swamps in particular - feel darn atmospheric. That said, glad to see that the borked stealth wasn't just me - the whole time I was thinking 'perhaps I just remember it wrong', but it seems my memory is fine.
    It could also be that I've seen so many 'cult classic reimaginings' try to reinvent the wheel and accidentally destroy the uniqueness of the source. For that I was actually relieved to see how much of Outcast was left intact and 'as-is' - apart from animations and combat, it has aged phenomenally well.
    Also, I agree; Infogrames / Atari is on the shared No1 spot with EA. I'm so happy the franchises they used to have are now, for the most part, in better hands.

    • @SwannyTheMike
      @SwannyTheMike  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Believe me, I wouldn't have name-dropped Elex if I had a problem with jank in my games. I actually had to stop myself from playing even more once I got the footage I needed!
      Honestly, if Second Contact had maybe another six months to a year in the oven, it probably would have turned out fantastic. So I'm hoping you're right and THQ Nordic gave them the time they needed.

    • @PenguinDT
      @PenguinDT ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SwannyTheMike Second Contact was a failed Kickstarter that got funded by the publisher (BigBen), so it likely didn't have the luxury of dev time. Heck, BigBen might have a rep as shady as Infogrames (see: The Sinking City), so I'm really happy that Outcast found a safer home.
      The only danger I can see impacting Outcast 2 now is the outlandish spending of THQ Nordic's parent company Embracer. If they manage to nuke a couple of billions more, it might pull the rug from under more niche projects.

    Too bad this game is not more popular. Playing the remastered, since it was 1$ on Steam and I also played the original, I found there is allot of meme worthy dialog in this game. Even just "Yes, Ulukai?" :D . I remember being amazed by voxel tech playing the original. Wow, 3d world with so good graphics... and the buildings have roofs, with Voxel! Man tech is moving so fast, I thought back in the day.
    (If people do not remember. Back then your games could ether be Voxel or polygon based. However Voxel was built from the "ground up" and therefor mountains were easy, but rooms with roofs were often not possible, until Outcast, at least when I first saw Voxel with indoor areas. Obviously polygon based games, which the remaster is, won the main stream usage. Once 3d cards became a thing, slightly better resources usage CPU based voxel died.)

      It really is a shame that Outcast has never gotten the respect it deserves. I stand by my belief that a Dreamcast port would have done wonders for Outcast's popularity. I had to laugh when you brought up Elex ("it takes effort to be jankier than [Piranha Bytes]"), because just yesterday I finished playing Outcast 2, which I really liked for the most Part, but occasionally I had Cutscenes playing without any Voiceovers (twice), with Music randomly getting super loud and drowning out the Voices, or with choppy Sound-Glitching... and with Moments like those, I actually thought to myself "wow, every now and then this Game is even jankier than Elex 2" (which is not a good Sign); I hope they will patch it so Things like that won't happen. I actually low-key wonder if the Outcast 2 Devs may have drawn some Inspiration from Elex (Science-Fantasy Open World with Jetpack-Skilltree); I'd have no Way of knowing that, but what I do know for a Fact is that in one TH-cam-Video (or maybe two) the Director of Elex said that Outcast was one of their Main Inspirations [for Elex]... it would be funny if Elex and Outcast ended up inspiring one another. I also enjoyed the world-shattering Revelation that English Cutter was voiced by Rayman's VA... sounds like it, but I prefer Cutter's more action-hero-manly German Voice tbh. In any Case, cool Video, I enjoyed it very much!

    I actually didnt mind the remake. To be fair though, I did NOT play it back to back with 1.1. I played the original game back in the very late 90s, maybe even the newborn 2000s so there was a lot of water under the bridge since then and Outcast the original was a beloved memory. So for me the Remake was a great revisit and a great lead up to A New Beginning. I suspect if I had played them back to back the things you point out might have been more glaring, but honestly I had a great time. The story and alien world were always the main draws for me anyway. Also, I only played the remake just recently (like a few weeks ago) so maybe they ironed out a few kinks since this review. Anyway, looking forward to starting A New Beginning next, a game I honestly thought I would never see.

    • @SwannyTheMike
      @SwannyTheMike  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Playing them back to back for sure colored my perception of the remake. What's interesting though is that it was while I was writing the script for this video that I realized how much I disliked the remake in comparison to 1.1. I'd gone into the writing session believing that I had more of a neutral "eh" opinion of the remake, but the more I wrote, the more it hit me that I had very little in the way of genuinely positive things to say about it.
      Of course, I don't mind others disagreeing with me on this or with any other game. A world where everyone agreed with me would be boring as hell.
      And I hope you enjoy A New Beginning! It has its flaws, but I still had plenty of fun with it and have a lot of hope for Outcast going forward.

    I imagine a lot of flaws in the remake are more due to time and budget constraints rather than misunderstandings. Like they understood that having a way to integrate the definitions into the dialogue would make it a lot easier for some people, but didn't have the time to fully organically integrate it with what you've learned. Gunplay and stealth being a bit lousy is again something that can happen if they don't have a lot of time to fine tune things as much as possible (and I mean, how many actually big budget games have you played that had really crappy stealth sections? swapping up gameplay isn't an easy thing to implement while keeping things super polished).

    • @SwannyTheMike
      @SwannyTheMike  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh there's no doubt that the remake was a low budget rush job and looking back on it, I really should have emphasized that aspect. A lot of my perception came from cynicism towards previous developers who'd promised to recapture the magic of their old hits and proceeded to give us, at best, "Eh, it's playable, I guess." tier games like Shroud of the Avatar. And that wasn't being fair to Appeal. Especially since they shattered my doubts about A New Beginning. It wasn't perfect, but it for sure demonstrated an understanding of what made the original captivating.

    This is my favorite game of all time still, but I hate the remake and I hate the way the second game is looking , I wanted something more serious , more mass effect, more witcher 3, you know, the games that copied this mighty game.......but alas now we gonna get some woke enviromental double A game, instead of a amazing Plague's tale type smaller AAA game

      @SwannyTheMike  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'll ignore how tired I am of people labelling everything they don't like as "woke" for a second. What have they even shown off that would indicate its "wokeness"? That it's about a peaceful native people being exploited by a technologically superior person or group? Even if that weren't an EXTREMELY COMMON plot in sci-fi long before reactionaries kept trying to co-opt my hobbies, that's literally the setup to the first Outcast!
      Also, Mass Effect's devs were never shy about citing their influences and Outcast was never mentioned. It's not like they were picking only games people knew either since at least one of them cited the obscure as hell 80s PC game Starflight. And I don't even know what connection you see between The Witcher 3 and Outcast. They share practically nothing in common outside of being open world games with a dialogue system and side quests.
      Also #2, A Plague Tale's budget was roughly $10,000,000 USD, a quarter of the bare minimum to count as a AAA title. I.E. a AA title. It being a linear, story-based game allowed it to look as pretty as a AAA game.
