Breathtaking visuals - goes to show you that art direction trumps the Engine. It has a Myst/Riven quality to it as well. I was thinking of playing Avatar Frontiers of Pandora but I might give this a try instead.
The art direction of the first Outcast was so beautiful. That's why I kinda prefer video games of the 80s/90s/first half of 2000s : PC gaming felt like a very different world compared to console gaming, japanese video games were king and fun and creative and all the graphical imperfections forced everyone to be more imaginative. Thanks for these insights. Am with you on all of it, John. The game is great, a bit rough around the edges but it's soo definitely outcast. Love it. As I did with the first one
Great games - both the original Outcast and the sequel. Tbh I was very skeptical about the sequel - like, what are the chances that they'll do it right after 25 years, right? But they kinda did - which is almost like a miracle, along with the fact the sequel was released at all
I'll admit I wrote most Outcast happenings since the original off because I had no idea the OG developers were involved to the degree that they are :O I have some catching up to do, Outcast was absolute magic and it's one in a line of unrelated games that connect in my mind Another World -> Flashback -> Fade 2 Black -> Outcast 🥰
These games were all made in France and Belgium during the same era. Kind of a "French touch" kind of thing. There was also Little Big Adventure, Rayman, Beyond Good and Evil and Heart of Darkness that had that sort of vibe while being obviously more colorful and aimed at a younger audience. I miss that time, those games were very special I feel.
@@kwxjibo Good Call, I'm still waiting for Beyond Good and Evil 2, or at least a remaster / remake of the original one. Great game with excellent world building !!

Riven vibes. Very strong Riven vibes. Particularly the inner village area with the school in the middle where you learn the base-5 number system and symbols, that you need to take the underwater railway submarine thing to get to.
Fun fact, Cutter Slade's French voice actor in the original game is Patrick Poivey which doubles Bruce Willis. The fact they have that same cheeky personality in dialogues made me wish a movie adaptation would cast Bruce as the main character. : )
Awesome video, this is a game series that I’ve literally never heard of and I like to think I have a pretty good knowledge of lesser known games (at least from 2000 onwards). I hope the studio finds success with the latest release, it looks beautiful.

I have the original, and the remake, and although I've not played either of them a ton, I still enjoyed them. I saw this new game coming out and was surprised. I'm glad they made a sequel, and I think it's really cool how incredible the art direction is. Great art direction makes a massive difference. My only hope is that the technical issues UE4 typically has aren't an issue. The combat looks decently fun, and flying around looks really cool. I'll pick this game up some time. :)
I remember playing the original on my Pentium 3 450 back in the day. I do remember that PC cost almost £2000, but I remember loving playing the game on it. I'll have to give the 2nd contact 1 a go.
Ever since the days of Euclideon Unlimited Detail and the likes, I've been waiting for these guys to make a game that really demonstrates the potential of the tech for the games industry. That was over ten years ago... now I'm starting to think other volumetric representations, from the ML side of things, is going to eat their lunch.

BTW, thats not hyperbole by Mr L. Outcasr was way ahead of its time to the point that it ran terribly on most PCs It was that gens "Can it play Crysis" meme. It was one of those "revied well sold poorly" titles as it was a deeply weird game from design to mechanics to graphics. I still have my copy and this is the first I've heard of a sequel so thank you so much John for giving this game and its legacy the love it deserves.
This is the first time I've come across a 'Sponsored' episode by DF, and I was initially skeptical. However, I must say, this was very informativ coverage of a title. And of course a top-notch presentation thanks to John
So glad we got a sequel finally after literally decades. As with John, I LOVE Outcast (and the remaster/remake) and have such fond memories of the game and to me it totally still holds up to this day. And the best part so far for me? Outcast A New Beginning is a ton of fun and I'm having an absolute blast with it. I'm only about 2 hours in but other than some meh quest design and a fairly empty open world - it's about as good as I could have hoped for. And yeah, it looks incredible especially considering it's on UE4 and not UE5. Or Unity for that matter.
@@MrVoland44 I know it's made to make you want to explore and "iron man" around on the jet pack etc. But the world is still quite empty otherwise. I'm about 5 hours in now and other than random towns with barely any NPC's (who do all talk to you so far, so that's cool) there's hardly anything to find outside of quests and pre-designed stuff obviously.
Wow! I've never seen such beautiful environments, the art direction is off the hook. Graphically its also super impressive, shocking that they managed to make this in UE4, damn!
Fantastic video John and DF Team! I never knew about the earlier Outcast games but my interest is peaked for A New Beginning. I will definitely be checking it out. Content like this which encompasses the history of a game is really entertaining and informative. The passion for the technology in use and development of these games is really fantastic!
I really enjoyed the sequel. I'm kinda surprised how it still feels like authentic good ol's outcast exoerience despite its bigger, and more ambitious scope. Sure, some things in it are very rough and feels like the usual modern open world bloat (not a big fan of those temples activities thing, the fact that those are required for health upgrade makes me hated it even more, it would be great if they're puzzle based like zelda and not this arbitrary "superman 64-like" ordeal) and pretty clunky menu (the act of saving and loading a game is quite a chore), but it gives me more of good times rather than bad. Oh and gotta LOVE the worldbuilding. Its still impressive that a team this small achieve a game this big and rich. Kudos to Appeal team, their dream sequel finally beautifully realized.
I remember outcast back in the day, my pentium could not move the voxel it looked like flash gordon's holiday pics but I played it anyway it was truly special
Great video! I wasn’t familiar with the franchise and when I demoed the new game I was a bit confused as to where it had come from and what the vibe was. This definitely sheds some light on things. Luckily the first game and the remaster are both on sale atm for less than $2!
I wasn't sure what I thought of A New Beginning at first, but after getting a bunch of upgrades, flying all over the place is great, and the combat feels good. It's a really good game. The gun mods are a great concept. I'll definitely play it again in the future. It runs well too (DX12).
Oh my word! The environments in this new game look absolutely amazing! Not just technically but the art direction is beautiful. It seems to have flown under the radar which is crazy.
Man, that game was magic. Though I don't know if I would have loved it quite as much had I played it in English (even though I normally always go with original VO). Cutter Slade feels rather generic, but in the German version he was voiced by Manfred Lehmann, the voice of Bruce Willis except he made even Bruce Willis better :D
@@dark1x no worries, I otherwise enjoyed the video! I can appreciate that the original source videos weren't great quality, so it sounds like a tricky situation - you either don't upscale and present a blurry mess, or you try upscaling at the cost of AI artefacts😅
@@dark1x any plan to cover other 99 tecnical imrpessive game Nocturne. outcast was 2nd favorite on 99 for me. nocturne one first. espcialy wondering what alex thing on nocturne bcouse look good as ray tracing shadows and lights.
@@MrStrangermoonAs good as ray-tracing? I’m not dissing Nocturne by any means as I do think it used real-time shadow-mapping really well, but have you seen how much aliasing the edges of the shadows have in the game? That was to prevent late-1990s processors from choking to death, although as the game was almost entirely software-rendered under the hood it still doesn’t run great on powerful CPUs like the Pentium III Katmai (let alone the Pentium II), even with a top-of-the-line 3D card. There is a demo for a 1999 game called Seed (full game was cancelled) that uses real-time shadow-mapping almost as extensively as Nocturne but allowed you to adjust the resolution of the shadow-mapping to really make CPUs of the time scream for mercy. I would however love for Nocturne to be covered (as it is an excellent action-horror romp), along with early Matrox G400-accelerated/EMBM-supported games (that isn’t Expendable) like Dungeon Keeper 2 and Battlezone II
Remember when Outcast first came out and the magazines were split between "this game is incredible" and "this game ignores my expensive new 3d card and I returned it cause it chugs on my CPU" Man this looks good though. Shame there's no marketing campaign to speak of.
Funny how DF compares Cutter Slade to Jack O'Neill, in the french version we had the official voice actor of Bruce Willis doing Cutter's voice. Sadly he passed away few years ago Basically you played Bruce Willis trying to save the world while doing jokes, what a good game!
Played the first game in 2001. It was breathtaking. One of my top 5 games of all time. I had a blast exploring Adelpha in all its glory with its regions. I was a bit disappointed at the remake, as I expected better visuals and a better coherence with the original, but can't wait to get into this new one!
A dozen hours into this enjoying it a lot. It's nice to play something cheerful and a bit kooky. The jetpack and gliding are very nice. The way it guides you through its own quest logs suggests they know they've laid the subquests on a bit thick, so it's important to mix that stuff with just zooming off to see what's elsewhere...
I missed the game back then and knew nothing about it but some reason it had this kind of aura. I understand why now and it's greatly told, what a story! The new game looks fantastic too. Great video, thanks John.
Their commitment to really bad walking/running animations over the years is really impressive. Side note: I don't know if there are settings to reduce pop-in further than what's seen here, but I'm finding it pretty distracting.
Never played the original and the sequel is actually fun to play, the protagonist is cool, world interesting to explore and its fast paced. They throw you right in instead of having to grind for all the cool stuff. My biggest gripe is the performance issues on PC with areas that are CPU bottlenecked, like the first village area. Frametimes and 1% lows arent very good. Hope they can fix this with patches.
Wow the new game looks great! Never played the original, but this looks like it could be right up my alley. I'm always a huge fan of games that let you get crazy and don't limit your movement. In a way it reminds me of Breath of the Wild.
Outcast reminds me a lot of John Carter the movie - I think they could have easily created something that was one of the most successful IPs of all time by creating another planet and universe altogether.
How does a game from a small studio look this beautiful? Clearly the studio have done great work on the graphics and level of detail, but it also says amazing things about modern tools in general that this is possible with anything other than a massive budget
They got a lot of extra funding via THQ, which bought Appeal a couple of years ago. This is considered to be a AA title, so definitely not an Indy title.
Games like this speak to a time when some of us were not in such a hurry. There are times when it's good to just enjoy what you have in your hands and appreciate it without focusing on the end of it!
I remember this game, it was constantly getting a topic in a game magazine about the developement of the game, and once it came out it was a sort of a above average game, nothin extraordinary.
I played that original game with a Microsoft Force Feedback joystick :D. Truly one of the best games I've ever played. It shows its age these days. But in 1999, that soundtrack and world was mindblowing.
I especially like the phantastical designs of the trees. It's a nice art style which captures the feel of a foreign planet better than the more realistic art style of e.g. Avatar.
when ı saw avatar first time immidiatly think outcast game. adialfas basicly brown avatars. maybe james cameron child play outcast and show the cameron. and he combined with terminator aliens millitary. it felt like that.
The original game is my favourite game of all time, even after placing the pre-order I didn't dare to hope, I tempered my expectations as much as possible to avoid disappointment. Now 20+ hours into a New Beginning I need not have worried. The game is a true sequel to Outcast; the world building and dialogue still sparkle as they did in 1999, the new traversal mechanics and the way the level design takes advantage of them is sublime. Some of the quest design is a little weaker than the original without the big pay off moments and the plot doesn't quite have the same sparkle but overall I have nothing but admiration for the team that refused to give up on the game they'd held in their minds and hearts for nearly 30 years

I got this game out of a bargain bin in a Babbage's some time in 1999 or 2000 never having heard of it before, it just looked cool on the box and it was only five bucks. And it turned into one of my most fondly remembered and treasured games of all time. There's just something so magical about it. Half of that has to do with the music I think.

Breathtaking visuals - goes to show you that art direction trumps the Engine. It has a Myst/Riven quality to it as well. I was thinking of playing Avatar Frontiers of Pandora but I might give this a try instead.
Absolutely! I agree wholeheartedly about the comparison to Myst and Riven.
Seriously these environments look even more stunning than Horizons due to the amazing art direction, I've never seen anything like this!
I know I know, I sound like a boomer XD

It's insane to think that in just 8 years we went from Outcast to Crysis.
It's insane to think that in years, console still have max 30 fps
There was a real drive to push the boundaries of technology and gameplay that is sorely lacking today.
That‘s a generational jump worth the name!

The game needs some polishing too 😢 day one supporter though. Hope THQ is willing to invest into the game polishing too and not juat marketing.
started playing the remaster and was immediately hooked, my 14 year old self wasn't able to run it on my old Gateway PC back in the day, but this would have been a game I would have lost a loooot of sleep to. Excited to finish up the remake of the original and dive into this one when the release schedule cools down
Thanks for promoting this. Bought it yesterday and already put 6 hours in, loving it!
Amazing, they ALL look so good... How have I never heard of these... Definitely buying them. Spread the word! These are definitely underappreciated.
It looks great. We need more games like this.
This was my favorite game back in High School. I am so glad you decided to cover it and that you are shining a light on the tech behind the visuals. Beautiful game. Hopefully you will cover Quest for Glory 5 one day too.

Haha, I just posted the same. Definitely "touching cloth" there.
That running animation is the one reason why I could never get into Outcast xD But its remake has redone animations and so I played it and loved it.
Looks more like rollerblading
I bought the of outcast day 1,still have the CDs and manual, fond memories
I bought it multiple times i guess 5 in total with digitals and 1.1. And Remake.
Two cd versions bc of a patch or a bug that cause the CD to not being recognized 😂.
@@skydivin4ng3l I have a version of the original with a manual in Dutch. Great manual, 40 pages of Outcast goodness. Those were the magical days of gaming, man...!!
But they kinda did - which is almost like a miracle, along with the fact the sequel was released at all
I'll admit I wrote most Outcast happenings since the original off because I had no idea the OG developers were involved to the degree that they are :O
I have some catching up to do, Outcast was absolute magic and it's one in a line of unrelated games that connect in my mind
Another World -> Flashback -> Fade 2 Black -> Outcast 🥰
Yes dude! Exactly! These games really felt like a different place, a different planet! I also want to add that list the original Unreal.
@@FrenkSummers Would have loved to see what they could have done with BGE2, but the project is probably dead by now... Especially since Michel Ancel has left Ubi.
But yeah, BGE is amazing :)
I really love how UE4 looks with a strong art team behind it.
Im glad this was reviewed by someone that enjoyed the first game. It blew me away when it came out. Nothing else like it
I'm glad to see someone have as much fond memories of this game as I did. And make a good history-of video for it.
16:11 This locale is gorgeous. Like something out of Myst combined with Jak & Daxter. 🧡
Riven vibes. Very strong Riven vibes. Particularly the inner village area with the school in the middle where you learn the base-5 number system and symbols, that you need to take the underwater railway submarine thing to get to.
Voxels!!!! Westwood Studios was another studio that used Voxels engines back in the late 90s.
Novalogic too
Oh, I miss Novalogic's games so so much@@PPN462
The enviroment art looks absolutetly stunning.
Looks interesting, love the art style and don't mind some weak spots if the game has a strong vision as opposed to a focus tested blandness
I hope the studio finds success with the latest release, it looks beautiful.
ı quicly test your knowlede from another 99 pc exlusive game. do you know Nocturne game. like outcast it was best graphical game in fact better than slient hill 2 and resident evil 23 with smilar game.
Go for it, it's worth it !!
I remember playing the original on my Pentium 3 450 back in the day. I do remember that PC cost almost £2000, but I remember loving playing the game on it. I'll have to give the 2nd contact 1 a go.
I wish digital foundry would spend some time with the Atomontage Engine and interview the people behind the technology.

Or Unity for that matter.
openworld not really empty, its just build for "iron man" type of freeroam
Ah, I've got good memories of marveling at how ambitious the original game was. Ran at like 15fps on my rig back then :D
I love the original so much.
Got the new one with a discount on steam before launch and it's a blast!
Only channel I'd watch a sponsored video from 🤩
Loved the original game, had the PC big box. Great video John, this franchise deserves a lot more love!
Great video! I wasn’t familiar with the franchise and when I demoed the new game I was a bit confused as to where it had come from and what the vibe was. This definitely sheds some light on things. Luckily the first game and the remaster are both on sale atm for less than $2!
The original Outcast was incredible. I feel it never quite gets the recognition it deserves on lists of great open world adventure games.
I think the spec requirements were so high not many people ever played it
I wasn't sure what I thought of A New Beginning at first, but after getting a bunch of upgrades, flying all over the place is great, and the combat feels good. It's a really good game. The gun mods are a great concept. I'll definitely play it again in the future. It runs well too (DX12).
Oh my word! The environments in this new game look absolutely amazing! Not just technically but the art direction is beautiful. It seems to have flown under the radar which is crazy.
Outcast is a titel I’ll never forgot - hauntingly beautiful and unique. Looking forward to playing the sequel. Thanks for covering this 👍
Man, that game was magic. Though I don't know if I would have loved it quite as much had I played it in English (even though I normally always go with original VO). Cutter Slade feels rather generic, but in the German version he was voiced by Manfred Lehmann, the voice of Bruce Willis except he made even Bruce Willis better :D
The AI upscaling used for the older footage is really distracting.
Sorry. I tried my best to make it look decent but the source is like 360p and horrible. :\
Remember when Outcast first came out and the magazines were split between "this game is incredible" and "this game ignores my expensive new 3d card and I returned it cause it chugs on my CPU"
Man this looks good though. Shame there's no marketing campaign to speak of.
Im enjoying it. Firing old memories i have almost forgotten about. Old school feeling without the old school jank. 👍🏻
Funny how DF compares Cutter Slade to Jack O'Neill, in the french version we had the official voice actor of Bruce Willis doing Cutter's voice.
Sadly he passed away few years ago
Basically you played Bruce Willis trying to save the world while doing jokes, what a good game!
Interesting. The German version of the original also had the German voice actor of Bruce Willis!
Great video John. I didn’t know about the 1.1 update. I’ll check that out. Cheers.
Played the first game in 2001. It was breathtaking. One of my top 5 games of all time. I had a blast exploring Adelpha in all its glory with its regions.
I was a bit disappointed at the remake, as I expected better visuals and a better coherence with the original, but can't wait to get into this new one!
The sound of the pickups still echoes in my mind. I was awestruck by the graphices and vibe of this game at the time.
It feels like it scratches that itch early 3D promised. Real exploration, not just a big map with bog standard shooting or driving
I’m sold. I tried the demo and enjoyed it, but wasn’t convinced.
I was a baby nerd anticipating the original. Downloading it now.
Wow the new game looks great! Never played the original, but this looks like it could be right up my alley. I'm always a huge fan of games that let you get crazy and don't limit your movement. In a way it reminds me of Breath of the Wild.
Oh man, I remember the original Outcast. I didn't have a pc back then, I've played it on my friend's one :D
This game looks so cool to me, the interesting design and the push to exploration really checks my marks
It's crazy, like those environments are more impressive than anything else I've seen this generation, and that includes HFW.
Even though it clearly states [sponsored], this feels really true and genuine to what both games are
An entire DF retrospective on my favourite game ever? I'm so happy.
Man they did a fantastic job, I'm definitely playing this. I never played the original but I'm still glad they kept the same feel
Love all the DF crowd, but John's DF Retro videos are always an absolute pleasure.
"Sponsored by THQ Nordic" - very noticeable so.
Hardly have I seen John so hard pressed to find positives about a game before. lol
I started playing Outcast 1.1 for the first time and am enjoying it quite I bit. I will be playing the sequel as soon as I finish the first one.
i remember the original. I will buy this because I respect holding onto a dream for so long until it happens.
Some of the quest design is a little weaker than the original without the big pay off moments and the plot doesn't quite have the same sparkle but overall I have nothing but admiration for the team that refused to give up on the game they'd held in their minds and hearts for nearly 30 years
The asset pop-in and LODs are distracting.
Finally ! Outcast is back !
Kinda weird John didn’t mention Speakerboxx or The Love Below!
