Just bought one of those dirt cheap for 70 USD with a 650w PSU, Samsung SM591 with 512 GB, 16GB RAM, Xeon E5-1630 (will definitely be upgraded) and a Nvidia Quadro K620.
For 70 USD that's one hell of a steel for a 2016 Workstation. TBF, I did not know what I bought at the time of the purchase. 😅

If I am not mistaken, for the M.2 NVMe SSD you need the Flex riser card part# 00FC864. Per the specs sheet, the P510 supports up to one 512GB SSD but I am not sure if this was limited per the BIOS or what was available back in 2016 that this Workstation was marketed. The same goes for the HDD, the specs suggest up to 4TB capacity but again I am not sure if this is per the BIOS or the technology in 2016. Have you tried anything larger?

Just below the bottom ram slot your see another PCIe slot next to the SATA power ports on the motherboard this is for a Lenovo ThinkStation Flex Adapter that supports one PCIe Gen 3 M.2 SSD and one SATA 3 M.2 SSD. I have this same P510 and it came with this already installed. I have the Intel Xeon E5-1650 V4 6 core 12 thread 3.6GHz CPU installed, the SAPPHIRE NITRO+ RX 580 8GB GPU, 650 watt PSU, came with 16GB 2400MHz ECC ram(upgrading next month) I did install a 32GB non ECC ram for now till I can upgrade to more ECC ram and it's working even though it shows online the P510 don't support non ECC ram.

I am looking at these for a homelab setup as they have great expandability.
Andy are you able to confirm if the bios shows any birification options for the PCIe x16 slot? I want to know if its possible to split the x16 into a x4x4x4x4 so then something like the ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 Gen 4 Card can be used to present 4x m.2 drives. The lenovo site doesnt really confirm if birification is possible.

I have one of these myself and I'm curious how the upgrades go for you. The Flex Adaptor for m.2 support takes up space that a longer GPU might occupy and I think a fan could fit in that space instead for extra air intake. A pcie adaptor is a good idea, but can you boot from those?
In my case I'm considering buying a 6600 xt or 3060 to slap in there for 1440p gaming.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti draws power from 1x 12-pin power connector, with power draw rated at 290 W maximum. Specs for these Thinkstations say 250W max consumption on PCIe Gen 3 slots, so not sure if I would risk going that high. But still plenty of other cards that would work. ie: GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, 8GB GDDR6, Dual OC V2 only uses 200W power consumption, and only needs 8 Pin Power.

I mean it does have a 4 pin connector it should work as long as a cpu cooler fits.

Thanks for the comment, strange that as the cooling on this seems pretty good, I believe it’s just standard X99/X99 mounting so you should be able to get a 120mm AIO or better tower cooler to fit. I could be wrong and need to do some research but it looks right. Will be doing to mods on this and would be nice to get a better cooling solution. You maybe be able to just replace the fan as well with a nice little Noctua one, I’m also adding a front intake fan to help with airflow as well at some point. Let me know if you find a cooler that fits 🙏🏼

Is the Hardware compatibility list this sensible ? or maybe theyre is a setting to do in the bios ?

    it's all bios settings
Devices -> Video setup : here manually select the PCIe slot of the GPU (normaly it's slot 2)

Anything over 200w is going to be a problem as the PSU is connected to the mother board via a slide in connection and the PCI power connections come off the motherboard as well. It’s not a normal setup and people have had problems with bigger GPU’s plus the 3090 requires 3x 8pins as you said.

Hi you can buy the PSUs on eBay but I think there quite expensive. If not maybe look for a spares or repair system and pinch the PSU. You can only use the Lenovo psu’s

@@andystech101 Bummer. I picked one up and dropped in a GTX1660 graphics card and a Xeon E5-2695v4 processor. It runs really well. It also has 48GB of RAM, which I might upgrade to 64 at some point, but I'm not fussed.

Upgrading the P510 to an 8 core V4 cpu will improve performance. I got my son a refurb P510 with 64G of ram & using the E5-2667 V4 for audio/music. Ableton has performed flawlessly on that system.
I decided to upgrade the CPU for my production system which is a Lenovo S30. I snagged an E5-2667 V2 for $43 U.S. in excellent condition.
System performance improved dramatically. This is allowing me to further put of building or purchasing a new system until pricing has stabilized.

I’ve been looking the 8core v4’s at the moment I’ve just slapped a 1650 v3 in I had lying around while I wait for some funds to do what I want to do with it. Having trouble with ram compatibility at the moment it doesn’t seem to like anything I put in it ECC or non ECC as I wanted to go 64GB. Corporations do have there uses sometimes and cheap Xeons are one of them 🙏🏼
