      I submitted an application to reserve a registration number for the real aircraft I'm building on Jan 1st 2023. I called them to find out if my application was approved or not. Was told that I should expect them to get to it in about another month or two! They did at least confirm that the application is in their queue so it's not lost.
      When I did the same thing in 2017 for my previous build it was processed in just a couple of weeks.

      They should pay you every time you fly with it and cover you for personal injury and any theft or general loss such as ransom
      / abductions.
      The corporations want to own the sky and to sell hers on cars to the elites and for the rest of us we will settle for delivered pizza and buzzing over our property parks and other outdoor areas…….
      Is the FAA going to be liable for a drone which drops down onto my property and breaks the roof?
      Is the Amazon or Zipline going to cover the cost of damage to property when they are sending large aircraft over our schools / churches / gardens / swimming pools / or deal with fires 🔥 and fire damage…. What about when a delivery drone fails over a motorway or a highway 🛣️….. FAA going to cover the damage and loss of life????? This is going to be a massive lawsuit liability or regular people in cars and those who can’t afford ambulance air lift services let alone medical insurance……. Imagine a zipline plane crashing into your car or into your child!!!! No one is safe!!!!
      FAA stop the madnesss!

    We already have comprehensive and robust sensors and in-flight data logging called telemetry. Telemetry is one of the great RC innovations that drew me back into RC motor gliding, multi-rotors, and FPV after a long hiatus from my favorite hobby. I had always been intrigued by telemetry from the time of the Apollo missions, all those monitors at mission control, the antenna field allowing bi-directional control and sensing. Telemetry helped make me more connected to my craft and improve its safety. And the RC hobby has obvious and overwhelming evidence, dare I say proof of its safety. As a safety officer, I found it pretty difficult finding a dozen incidents to study.
    Ok my concern primarily is directed at the lack of evidence that model aircraft have been or are now a threat to life, limb, security, privacy, the environment, safety....you name it. Where are the NTSB reports that drive such promulgation of rules, laws and restrictions replacing the common sense and best practices in our hobby that have made it the safest form of aviation since aviation was a thing. Congress didn't demand Remote ID. It demanded a safe and secure airspace. FAA, NTSB please rank statistically the threats to life, limb, family security and attack those with smart people, teams, tech, innovation, education, public awareness, demonstrations etc.. Off the top of my head...The aging transportation infrastructure, Continuing to allow high speed ground vehicles to share the same lane with those driving a speed limit and other ground transportation issues that hourly and actually and statistically injure and kill our family members and friends.
    In aviation do the same ranking, own it, change it, and start now. Damn the red tape. Listen to those innovative flight instructors who aren’t waiting on slow bureaucracy and who are currently teaching pilots how best not to die and or kill those on the ground.
    Also FAA, Please move your airspace up and out of our Living space, where we breath and work and play football, fly kites, and yes fly our balsa and plastic model aircraft.
    How much of our tax dollars over how many decades did the FAA and others spend in noise abatement. And now you trade that effort for lucrative industry visions of aviation nirvana involving swarms of noisy multi-rotors streaming overhead. Again , please move your airspace up above our living spaces. Altitude equals options….and time to assess systems, to evaluate choices, to prepare crew and passengers, time to make calculated decisions, prepare responders, allows increased range to the best landing place that avoids those living and working in their rightful airspace. Except for emergency, approach and the pattern, manned and unmanned commercial craft benefit from increased altitude. Ground dwellers benefit from the lower noise levels and yes allow model aviators generous space to fly their balsa and plastic creations while passing knowledge of such to the upcoming generation. Knowledge that includes safety, responsibility of our actions, following reasonable rules. Flight training involves all of these and so much more. We practice responses to occurrences that are common to flight. We learn about how weather affects flight and our decision to fly or not to. We also want national security, privacy and safety. We look out for one another and pull aside those who practice risky behavior. We do this to protect people, and also to protect the right and privilege to engage in such a great hobby and sport at all the various locations that are appropriate for flying whatever class of model. We also always have an eye and ear our for any aircraft that might even be close to colliding with our models. We react early and decisively to avoid any risk or collision. We are adept at this awareness because we practice it often. And as aviation enthusiasts, We notice aircraft, we look out for them, manned or UAV. If we saw someone demonstrating a risky flight we would stop and assess their actions, share our knowledge, and educate.
    We would inform the proper authorities if we recognized a hint of bad intent. And there is no other group who are better prepared to recognize such threats. Finally implement a reasonable shielded operation plan. Most multi-rotors and model aircraft are flying below cell and water towers, surrounding buildings and even tall trees. And keep manned aircraft above 500ft and 1000-1500 for safety and altitude to have time to act to live.
    FAA Plans
    For public safety and noise abatement please push your Airspace up above and out of the human's living and breathing space. After all It is our right to have living space to work, to serve, teach, be family, and enjoy the timeless pursuit of recreation, even flying our kites and model aircraft as for example in Shielded recreational operations .
    How much of our tax dollars over how many decades has the FAA spent on noise abatement only to dream of running a web of multirotor light to heavy lift aircraft streaming and screaming over our heads. Manned and commercial aircraft will always be needed, but will require separation as well as integration. Separation laterally and in altitude so as to improve the quality of life of the peoples this tech is developed to serve. And separation in altitude and route in case of the eventual aircraft failure, pilot error, bird strike, or medical emergency. In order to give the souls on board and the people below the statistically proven best chance of survival, usable altitude and a safe route are keys to safety.
    For about 100 years model aviation has been proven to be the safest forms of aviation. And I agree Bad Actors will use drones. They will not display their ID and location. But placing the burden of installing remote devices on their balsa , foam and plastic model planes does not satisfy public safety nor does it improve national security. Primarily and most importantly, modelers use model aviation to teach aeronautics, safety, construction techniques and craftsmanship and as well teach doing no harm and good citizenship.

    @dronetag ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Hey Bruce, thanks a lot for your comment on our latest offering. We completely agree with the points you mentioned. But let us add a few remarks to the discussion.
    1) We are working on the transferability between multiple aircraft. It is just something we don't focus on in the early stage. Perhaps, we will release a 3D model that pilots can print / buy and use the Velcro to move the unit around.
    2) You don't necessarily need to use the antennas we listed on our e-shop. You can use any copper tube antenna for 2.4 GHz, which most modelers have at home and just buy the GPS antenna of your preference (patch, one with adhesive, or just one that will hang around). Keep in mind that we don't manufacture the antennas and we just resell them. So in reality, we are just covering our costs of repackaging them and managing the inventory + operations.
    3) We do believe the $50 mark is feasible. Just not for us as a small company mainly targeting enterprise solutions. If we were able to purchase an inventory of tens of thousands of units, we could do that. But at this stage, there are no guarantees for us in this hobby industry.
    Let's keep the BS now as a benchmark and maybe someone else might come and beat it with better features and business model.
    If you have some further questions, speculations or remarks, just reach out to me and I will be glad to transparently discuss intentions and product roadmap.

Perhaps you could justify a higher pricetag if you are using some fancy GPS module or MCU, if you tell me what GPS module and MCU you are using I might change my mind but as it stands at the moment the component parts to manufacture your drone tag is around $15.... and that is one off prices inc delivery.

But don't worry, the online school will only cost you $200.00, the initial operator permit fee will be $175.00 with an annual renewal of $100 and the annual refresher operators course will be $75. Of course, there will be a commenting period where hundreds of thousands of citizens reject the rule but those will be ignored by the FAA/FCC in the name of safety.

Honestly I don't know why I couldn't fly 300g parkflyer under 20m because there are buildings in 100m radius... the glide ratio on that is so small it would crash to ground anyway...

    I purchased the BS WiFi modules on the special, I'm still waiting on other manufactures to produce competition for the BS, as currently the $89 is 8X more than cost, mostly due to volume issues. To fix the GPS add an active antenna, this replaces a standard GPS and saves weight. As of 12/11/2024 the 'cheapest' RID unit I've found is a Holyton HT60 at $28.95, Bluetooth, self contained with battery and antenna at 13.7 grams, you can lighten it by removing the case and battery, 34X28X13mm (1.3X1X.5"). The APPs used to find RID WiFi drones require phones with WiFi Aware or NaN, WiFi 6 or higher and some phones still do not work (Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra).

    This will be a giant rort. Modellers will be ripped off at every opportunity. $49USD on that represents probably 500-800% markup over an inflated estimate of a build cost. A name brand GNSS chipset (eg a NEO module) with antenna is about $3-5AUD in single qty and a typical BT SOC to control it all another $2-4AUD assuming aircraft power is available then power management maybe another $1-2. I haven't read the FAA spec but it is just BT I assume. "$49USD is below cost" bwhahaha. If you had someone in the US hand making them and you were paying a decent wage then sure but an offshore PCB and fab house will churn them out at fractions of that and quantity will make up for the R&D investment. For $25AUD you can buy a 4G/LTE GPS tracker and that is an order of magnitude more complex. An Apple AirTag compatible tracker retails for $2.50AUD lol.

    The team over at Dronetag are really trying to be the premier RID module company. I have the BS coming; I've covered everything else they've put out so far, the Mini and the Beacon. The Beacon is the best, self-contained and has own power and can be easily changed from aircraft to aircraft. Price is a bit stiff $200. Probably the best we're going to get as far as size and functionality. The FAA would make this all a lot easier if they just remove the ground station location. The information being broadcast from the module or aircraft should be enough.

      Would be better if they just made it so only police/faa can locate rid... I don't think the community would be nearly as angry (and many laving the hobby) if we didn't have to now worry about all the nut jobs with guns that can just randomly find pilots and cause problems/harm/death. That.. and the cost/weight to have to put these on our drones. This one at least looks small enough to fit/be out of way on 5"+ sized drones.

    After submitting the extensive FRIA application data the FAA has kindly updated our flying club's FRIA application status as denied for the following reasons.
    Reason/Justification: The request submitted encompasses areas where the public may gather or regularly transit such as public buildings, roads, and parking areas, and may pose a risk to persons and property on the ground [14 CFR § 89.215(c), AC 89-3
    Section 7.4]
    None of those items listed are in our submitted FRIA submission. We fly over fields and woods with access via a non-public, locked, gated dirt road.
    However, if you look at the FAA-approved FRIA in Florida many are inside controlled airspace some limited to max flight altitudes of 100 feet, include flying over private homes and busy paved roads but of course, these are ROTC high school sites and other government-funded sites.
    Definitely double standards here FAA, get a grip and I suggest you focus on preventing manned aircraft crashes rather than on messing with R/C toy enthusiasts with regulations that make no sense and don't improve safety in any way.

    It’s a $10 module they’re charging $50 for because nobody else has one this small and there’s a panic for pilots to get something.
    This looks like something any beginner could design in easyeda. They will be a dime a dozen by September.
    And dronetag knows this. That’s why they’re pressuring you to buy now with the threat of the $90 price tag.
    $10 might be a bit of an exaggeration but I highly doubt its cost is gonna be significantly higher than current gps units. I foresee the “high end” or “premium ones” coming in at $20 or $30 max.

  • @toastrecon

    Now it's 90 Euro for the cheapest "BS" option. Another thing they could have done: allowed it to be open sourced. Push it to something like ESP32 or ESP8266 where there are a ton of cheap dev boards. Push the Arduino firmware with the right config, and done for like $15.

    @Nkkdxn45j ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Regardless of the cost, mounting, security concerns etc, one thing I wonder about is the effect on the normal onboard receiver.
    I think the FAA requirement is that these things must be maximised for range. Since it is Bluetooth or WiFi, that presumably means at the least to be using max allowed power, which (I think) in each case is 100mW. Again, (I think) Bluetooth is 2.4g spread spectrum, as are most people's radios, WiFi is fixed channel 2.4g or 5g - but 5g would have less range. From what I read, these things are likely to be mainly Bluetooth, therefore sharing the 2.4g band.
    In theory, it shouldn't conflict with the normal Rx Comms except as a slight effective increase in noise floor, because the hopping patterns will be different, in the same way that multiple users share the same band with no issue.
    However, there's a big difference, multiple users are fairly much physically spaced most of the time. Here we have a 2.4g RID Tx blasting away at maximum power very close to a sensitive 2.4g receiver. Even with a different hopping pattern, channel isolation isn't perfect and I'd expect some leakage channel to channel.
    Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised if people find their normal range has decreased somewhat. But, time will tell. I am sure the FAA as a responsible regulator will have fully tested this.

    • @modal88-j6g
      @modal88-j6g ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Nkkdxn45j
      @Nkkdxn45j ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@modal88-j6g the rule seems to allow either. Just that stuff I have read seems to mention Bluetooth more often, though time will show. If network ID comes back, then clearly Bluetooth won't do, but I expect the FAA would have no qualms with saying "buy this new thing".
      However, whether WiFi (fixed channel) or Bluetooth, I think the same effect is likely to apply due to channel bleed/spillover, or at least there's a risk of it. WiFi 5g would obviously be better, though possibly it would adversely affect digital FPV, of the types which are closed loop.
