  • Pulled the car to the track for the first time last week. New to me 2000 F350 dually 7.3 did an awesome job, mostly. Today we are installing a Mishimoto transmission cooler to see if the trans is getting too hot while towing.

    I run the same mishi cooler on my 7.3 and the temps never get over 170 pulling dump trailers loaded to the gills. If youre having problems with the 1>2 id check the data and watch the commanded gear, put dieselsite accumulator body in the trans. Get yourself a HYDRA with some tunes from one of the 7.3 gurus. I have Gearhead tune files but also have hybrid "mini me" injectors but those are like 2700 bucks.

    If you put a tuner on there it will clean up the shifting immensely. I have several different Power Strokes from all the different generations that I use for personal as well as for my business so I’d like to say I have a decent amount of experience with the good and bad of running tuners vs stock. I usually like to leave my the trucks for my business stock for longevity sake and less wear and tear from my employees. But after all these years I still have three 7.3’s (two autos and one manual) that are used to tow with a good bit and I do run Hydra tuners on them because it’s honestly a night and day difference. In my personal opinion I never felt that the shift points on 7.3 autos were in the right places and felt sloppy. I kept having people recommend that I try a hydra but I was hesitant because they made it this far in life stock. After adding one to my personal 7.3 excursion I was sold, it was a night and day difference. I ran it a bout a year trouble free so decided to put them on my others (two of the truck I have had since new) because it just made them feel like a more modern day diesel. There’s plenty of different tuners and chips out there and everyone has their own opinion on what works best but in my personal real world experience I would highly recommend the Hydra for Power Hungry Performance. Not only do they work great they are very reasonably priced. I probably paid 4 times more for the tuner on my newest Superduty and don’t get anywhere near the noticeable benefits that I get from the Hydras on my old 7.3’s. Again it’s all personal preference but I couldn’t be more impressed with the results so that is my recommendation.

      Thanks, I've never heard of them. I just go a TS Performance 6 position chip, I had one on the excursion and loved it

    John on the ac, type in ac not cooling on TH-cam and do the shim removal and it will help . Just basically take the shim washer out and put front clutch cover back on and see if this helps

    Trans shifting issue.....replace the TPS. My 97 e4od, was having all sorts of shifting issues. The 4R100 is just an updated e4od. I completely rebuilt the trans with all updated internals, and still had same issues. Sometimes it would shift early, sometimes it wouldn't shift until I let off the throttle. All problems disappeared after I replaced the TPS

    Yep I did the same to my 99 f250 put the bigger cooler on it.also did the fluid and filter change on the trans.but eventually I had to have it rebuilt.spend the extra bucks on it with up grades and good tork converter.no problems with it since I have around 30 thousand hard tow miles on it.

      The compressors are weak on those trucks. Actually the compressors and the clutch, but our 7.3 truck, we kept adjusting the gap on the ac clutch till finally we replaced the compressor and all fords around that time have black death in the compressor, so just replace it

    I use a Tonno Pro soft folding cover on my Ram 3500 dually. I’ve owned four of them. Every time I trade trucks I buy a new one. Installation or removal time is less than five minutes. They fold up far enough for me to pull a fifth wheel RV without removing the cover. Summit sells them. Shipped for free. Total cost was about $300.00 with tax.

    I would recommend an RDS toolbox fuel tank combo for the bed especially traveling like you do. They are very nice to have and easy to install.

    • @lloydholt6511
      @lloydholt6511 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Got a a 60 gal RDS tank in my Ram. Easy to install and works great. When you pull a heavy trailer the stock 20-25 gal tank doesn’t go far at 9- 10 mpg towing. Tank has been in two trucks. Initial install was an F-250. I bought their installation kit.

    That a/c issue is fairly common for those years along with excessive trans heat. Get ya a decent pusher style electric fan and mount it on the condenser this will also help with trans heat. The stock engine fan just doesn't pull enough air through to keep everything happy. I've done a handful of em and had great results..

    John I'd look for a Edge CTS monitor you can watch all kinds of stuff anything the computer see. Trans temp epically and you can add an EGT Sensor.

    • @TurboJohnRacing
      @TurboJohnRacing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just realized my scan tool can monitor it also. Will have that connected next trip for sure

    • @TwinJRacing
      @TwinJRacing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TurboJohnRacing nice yes it will. I just personally like the CTS over multiple Gauges one screen to watch plus you can set alarms when something goes out if range. I'm sure you aren't going to see any trans temp problems with that new cooler.

  • @NollEngineeringPerformance
    @NollEngineeringPerformance 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You’re probably way ahead of me but if the ac sucks when you’re not moving check your fan clutch. If that’s all set put a set of gauges on it and pull some 134 out. I’ve seen a ton of fords overcharged by as much as a half pound from the factory and the added refrigerant actually hurts it. Even if the pressures are within spec, less cools more to a certain extent- more refrigerant turnover

    John, if you want that AC to cool better at stops, turn the damn heater off!!! It's super difficult for the AC to cool well when it's having to compete with a heater core with hot water running through it!!! 😁
    It's not your fault, Fords penny pinchers from back then didn't allow the budget for a heater valve so therefore there's no way to cut the hot water running thru it when the AC is on. The fix is to install a heater valve for a Ford Ranger. You'll have to tap in a vacuum hose from underneath the dash to control the heater valve. Once you get this done you'll be pleasantly surprised on how well your AC will cool once you get this done!!!

    • @davedave2525
      @davedave2525 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's link to a TH-cam video with all the info needed to get this accomplished. Trust me, this will make a huge difference in the cooling of your AC not only at a stop but at cruising speeds just as well!!! th-cam.com/video/IVXExrJPlfE/w-d-xo.html

    Thats one hellova trans cooler lol, should hold several more quarts of fluid. The cooler cost is a lot cheaper than a transmission and the converter clutch will appreciate that fresh fluid for sure, is it a stock fan clutch? It may be due for a replacement if the AC isnt cool at idle, i replaced mine when i changed water pumps and mine does fine at idle now

    • @TurboJohnRacing
      @TurboJohnRacing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It comes on strong as the truck gets hotter. May change it. also gonna bypass the heater core

    2 air to oil cooler is too much restriction

    • @zspence77
      @zspence77 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you explain why. I have the factory cooler along with the 6.0 trans cooler. I have a 1999.5 with 7.3. Plus a mag hytech transmission pan. I have 38's with 8 inch lift. Ok, when I installed the 6.0 transmission cooler it may be got to 190 / 195 pulling on a hot day. The only thing was ,my gear ratio was still on stock and my truck was seaching 3 to 4th alot when pulling. So got a gears 4.56 which should have changed my overall ratio to 3.73'ish. Well it revs higher and at high way speeds and heats up quickly. Makes sense, turn something faster heats up. If I got rid of the stock cooler and just kept the 6.0, would that cool better??
      Thanks for your advice
