I just bought my first diesel to pull my new to me 5th wheel camper. I ended up getting an early 99 7.3L. So far, I have an intake, 4" turbo back exhaust that duals out under the back of the cab. I just got done installing all my gauges. I ended up rebuilding my tranny a couple months ago. I did it myself and installed a tugger kit while i was at it and a dual clutch disk converter. The truck has 275,000 miles on it and idles at temperature with 48 pounds of oil pressure. I also put on a flat bed with a nice tool box and a 150 gallon auxiliary fuel tank. It has 35" tires and gets about 16mpg. A tuner will be my next purchase. I figured id set it up to take advantage of the tuner before I got it. The intake and exhaust did make a difference. I have about $4k tied up into the whole thing, including the price of the truck.
@8020Media Thanks, and yes, it would benefit from a tune. It runs really well now, I can't wait to see how it runs with another 100hp and 200 lbft. My next 2 mods will be the Hydra and a turbo master waste gate controller. I'm actually putting my own boost fooler together with a 1/4" pressure regulator. Looking to get a crew cab 4x4 7.3 Power Stroke . Great video, the 7.3 only had 250 HP at the fly wheel from the Ford. The improvements sound great! I was a Test Driver for ford in AZ at Yucca Proving Grounds! Loved that job!
I miss ford not being in Yucca also, I was a Test Driver 95-98 the 2ND Gen Lightning was a BLAST to drive on the High Speed Track! Bolt FORD tuff is no joke!!! Ram has become a better Truck because Dodge bought the proving grounds!
Nice video! Something worth mentioning is the stock injectors in the OBS trucks (94.5-97) are good for only about +80hp with the Hydra tuner (unlike the 99+ models).
The 7.3 power stroke is more than driving or towing from here to there, its about creating something unique to yourself and powerful. The cost/benefit is there. Even an expensive buy can be upgraded for about $5,000 which still brings the overall price to way less than a new truck with similar performance.
Thanks for this, im buying my first diesel, 2001 f350, in 2 days. Its a truck ive always wanted, crew cab, dually, flatbed, diesel. This is exactly the info i needed!
Everybody keeps calling these exposed oiled media air filters “cold air intakes” which is the complete opposite of bringing cold air into the engine. The factory intake brings air in from outside of the engine compartment which is considerably cooler than the air under the closed hood. Not to mention all the dirt getting past the oiled media filter. Increase the diameter of the intake system piping all you want, but I would personally prefer to have an engine that didn’t get dusted and actually pulls in cold air from outside.
“ but I would personally prefer to have an engine that didn’t get dusted and actually pulls in cold air from outside”, This is as basic common mechanical sense as it gets, YES, Why use hot inefficient air from compartment and the suit-crap air the area usually accumulates?
The factory airbox is super restrictive. Even with added temp the hp gain is there. An engine can inly burn the oxygen it has available to it. Call it what you want. For hp gains the exposed filter is the better option. If you live in a dusty area there are other options better than the factory airbox

@DEVFORCE151 it's a bigger transmission cooler that keeps the transmission cooler and happier. If your running stock tune, and stock tires, there is probably no need for it, but if you don't it is a must.

Air filter. You lose power when sucking in hot air from under the hood. Talking from first-hand experience as I ran that filter for a while until I got the S&B CAI.
Yes, that's true I probably should have talked about torque limits but torque can be managed with proper tuning so just important to stick to reputable tuners.

7 - The '94-'97 7.3s don't typically need a boost fooler, which may be why it's more difficult to find. Unless you're planning on heavily modifying it, we wouldn't worry about it.
Hey im new to the diesel world and looking for some mods to mines. I just bought a 03 F350 7.3 and would love to do some of these mods you mention. Is working on a diesel truck really hard or can you take your time and do it yourself. Never worked on one before but work on cars.
I have a 2002 f350 dually with 65k original miles (it is mint)...My dilemma is do i change out perfectly good stock parts for aftermarket parts? I pull a 11k pound 5th wheel about 4-5k miles a year...thanks
Yes - aluminum is more prone to corrosion from salt. Stainless steel holds up better. I've got an aluminum one on my F350 and I had to have a hole in the piping patched last year. So stainless holds up better/is more durable. Sound is of course a preference but a lot of people do prefer the sound made by aluminum over stainless on these trucks too though.
What guages would you recomment running on a pillar? I kind of want to keep it streamlined and nice inside and not add a screen but still have guages for important things.
Boost and EGTs are the two most important - fuel pressure is good too to keep an eye on injectors. And then trans temp if you have an auto and want it. I just have boost and EGTs on mine but if you get a 3 pillar or something toss in fuel pressure
Im looking at a 99 f450 for work. Im interested in upgrades specifically for towing heavier loads. It has 132,000 miles and has a 6 speed manual trans. I do masonry work in a remote rural town and have to haul material in for most of my jobs. This truck would be ideal for my situation, especially if it had a little more power over stock. I clicked on the link from the description here but not exactly sure what combination would work best? Thanks for any advice.
@8020Media I picked up that truck the other day. It has a newer flatbed that's ideal for my type of work. It also has an aftermarket intake and 4" exhaust, not sure about any tunes but it definitely has quite a bit more power compared to the 7.3 I sold last year. I'm curious if it already has some type of tune previously installed can you install something different? I'm not sure how that works so I'll probably run it the way it is and see how it does. I have a light load to pick up this coming week that will be a good way to test it out. It's a 4 hour round trip through some mountain passes. Like I mentioned this truck definitely has more power but I need it to be able to pull heavy loads and not get hot. I couldn't be happier though, I only paid 4k for it.
Quick question, if you use the php turner and take the truck in for service, is the service provider able to tell if it has a tuner or not? What if you remove the tuner before taking it in and restore the truck back to the factory tune, can they tell if it’s was flashed?
@@8020Media I have a warranty on my transmission, just had it replaced and tunes void the lifetime warranty. I removed the php and tuned it back to stock before replacing the transmission.
so the hydra tuner tunes the engine? i’m looking into a bigger turbo but im terrible at the whole tuning thing. so if i put the turbo on, a new exhaust and a BP intake, they hydra will take care of that?
Yes, I just put a hydra and 1.5 injectors into my 01 F350 that already had banks intake, fuel bowl delete and regulated return fuel system. The Hydra can be tuned for standard bolt ons with their tunes, or get custom tunes for turbo, big oil, and injectors
I use both for work. Ford is much softer ride and I think stops better. Gm is much quicker, better tow mode, it's an LLY tho. However my step dad had an lb7, and it survived that moron until he literally set it on fire drunk. Both will pull whatever the truck can handle just fine.
Depending on the year and model stock dyno numbers range from like 165whp-210whp. Torque will depend more so on the tuning but just running the Hydra you're probably somewhere around 650wtq range at 300-325whp.
Why, oh why can’t you be bothered to differentiate between the OBS and earlier Power Stroke models and the newer? I absolutely will keep my ‘97 forever. Always looking for reliable upgrades.
Hello Jake, If you get to reading the comments, what is the best way to reach out to you purchase these four upgrades? I looked on the website and could not find the tuner nor the fooler. Can I send an email from the webpage referencing this YT video and just ask for this package?
I'm getting ready to clock 300,000 on my 2000 and it's showing no signs of slowing down. Just remember to keep up on your maintenance and keep your oil changed.
Was the oil changed at 3,000 if in dusty or towing, or 5k if only highway, do you have records of maintenance, is it clean and looks cared for. Most equipment is about as good as it looks. Probably needs injectors ($1500 in parts, 1500 labor), and likely a trans if auto, and expensive truck parts like rotors, tie rod ends, etc. Could easy drop $10k into it... guaranteed. Or just run it and keep some Gorilla tape handy. I'd look for one with 150k on it at a dealer in northern idaho, and fly out, will save you $5,000 for sure, and you'll look smart. Dead serious.

I don't think there's a reason to switch it up.
Wouldn't doubt that some "updated" tuning wouldnt hurt. All else keep running it!
Mules - Agreed!
I’m not sure if I misunderstood. The steel exhaust won’t rust out as quick as the aluminum?
Yes - aluminum is more prone to corrosion from salt. Stainless steel holds up better. I've got an aluminum one on my F350 and I had to have a hole in the piping patched last year. So stainless holds up better/is more durable. Sound is of course a preference but a lot of people do prefer the sound made by aluminum over stainless on these trucks too though.
@@8020Mediaif your "aluminum" exhaust is rusting, you have steel 😂
@@coltondavis7222corrosion doesn’t equal rust🧍♂️
@@coltondavis7222he said corrosion not rust. Plus he’s talking abt stainless steel
Do these recommendations apply to the 94-97 7.3 powerstroke?
R - Sure do!
Good info
Eragon - Thanks for the feedback!
Also I have deleted all the fuel restrictions and heater intake
C - Best way to do it!
Can i put a boost fooler with chip
B - Should be able to.
G - All of the mods listed will get you to that 325WHP.
@@8020Media thanks!
G - Sounds like a solid deal! Keep us updated on the build.
Is a 4 inch turboback exhaust system good if you replace the compresor wheel on the stock turbo?
Yes - 4" is plenty big for that.
Quick question, if you use the php turner and take the truck in for service, is the service provider able to tell if it has a tuner or not? What if you remove the tuner before taking it in and restore the truck back to the factory tune, can they tell if it’s was flashed?
Do you have an aftermarket warranty or something? If you don't have any warranty then it really doesn't matter if they know it is tuned or not.
@@8020Media
I have a warranty on my transmission, just had it replaced and tunes void the lifetime warranty. I removed the php and tuned it back to stock before replacing the transmission.
I - Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sure this will come in handy for other viewers!
so the hydra tuner tunes the engine? i’m looking into a bigger turbo but im terrible at the whole tuning thing. so if i put the turbo on, a new exhaust and a BP intake, they hydra will take care of that?
Yes, I just put a hydra and 1.5 injectors into my 01 F350 that already had banks intake, fuel bowl delete and regulated return fuel system. The Hydra can be tuned for standard bolt ons with their tunes, or get custom tunes for turbo, big oil, and injectors
Anyone try a bullydog
If having the money to build how much can the motor itself handle
A - 450whp
been thinking of getting a 7.3 or lb7. which one would you choose personally?
I own a 7.3 personally if that answers the question!
I use both for work.
Ford is much softer ride and I think stops better.
Gm is much quicker, better tow mode, it's an LLY tho. However my step dad had an lb7, and it survived that moron until he literally set it on fire drunk.
Both will pull whatever the truck can handle just fine.
What is the stock WHP? If you are hitting 325 WHP what is the ball park torque numbers?
Depending on the year and model stock dyno numbers range from like 165whp-210whp. Torque will depend more so on the tuning but just running the Hydra you're probably somewhere around 650wtq range at 300-325whp.
Why, oh why can’t you be bothered to differentiate between the OBS and earlier Power Stroke models and the newer? I absolutely will keep my ‘97 forever. Always looking for reliable upgrades.
E - That would be a VERY niche video to do OBS or other Powerstroke years..
I can’t believe a trans cooler upgrade was not included.
L - Certainly a good mod to add, but we don't think it beats the ones we've listed.
Hello Jake, If you get to reading the comments, what is the best way to reach out to you purchase these four upgrades?
I looked on the website and could not find the tuner nor the fooler. Can I send an email from the webpage referencing this YT video and just ask for this package?
Thanks for the email, I'll get back to you this morning!
Equivalent size Briggs and Stratton would make more
J - Thanks for the insight.
I was wondering about buying a 7.3 270k miles is it safe?
I'm getting ready to clock 300,000 on my 2000 and it's showing no signs of slowing down. Just remember to keep up on your maintenance and keep your oil changed.
C - All depends on maintenance history.
A - Well said!
What about hood exit exhaust?
M - Rare, but we wouldn't/can't advise that.
When you say "Aluminum" exhaust vs Steel you do know that it isnt actually made of Aluminum, right?
Yes I'm aware it is aluminized steel.
Yeah it has terrible gas mileage cuz it doesn't use gas
M - lol thanks for the insight.
Its gas mileage is infinite, fuel mileage is low.
If it ran on your hot air it could drive across the ocean to Hawaii and back
High horse power and reliability don not go together. It’s a trade off. You have to find that balance
J - That's not entirely true.. What does "high horsepower" entail to you?
@@8020Media depends on how much power you trying to get. But ya. It is
J - Exactly.. it depends on what power you're trying to get to.
why? stock is just fine and more bullet proof.......
J - Why not?
😘😘
P - Thanks for the feedback! We hope it helps.
How to build 325 hp 7.3 take your 275hp 7.3 put a tuner on it with a 140 tune bam already more than 325
C - Wheel, not crank.
