motortrend is responsible in convincing me to purchase my 2012 mustang gt 3 years ago. no regrets. after 50,000 miles the pony is still running strong with no mechanical down time between multiple drag strip runs and road course duty.
I've always been an American muscle lover. When it came down to me buying my very first new muscle car I test drove them all. I agree with this video in that I had a hard time with visibility out of the camaro. The challenger was nice to drive but a bit too fat for me. The mustang felt great and I had fun driving it and happy to be owning one now! But nothing against the other two. Long live american muscle!
I'm a fan of all American Muscle Cars. I hate that Chev/Dodge/Ford fans bash each other when we should stick together against overpriced/overrated European/Ricer cars. I owned a 2005 Dodge Charger RT which I loved the looks (yes even if they fcked it up with 4 doors) but it felt too big and would have loved the SRT8. Then I bought a 96 Camaro Z28 which was very quick, had a mean sound but it felt like it was falling apart (rattling) and sometimes scary fishtailing around corners. I now own a 2005 Mustang GT with several mods and I love it although I'm currently having fuel pump issues. If you ask me I'd proudly take any of these 3 cars and love the fact that they have their own identity and looks. To each their own I say but I respect all 3 makes.
Coming back and watching this... Really glad I went with my 11 GT over the others.. Still am lost as to how on Gods green earth this guy picked the Challenger over the Camaro in terms of anything other than looks for 2nd place. If I had the $ I'd own all 3. Not a huge fan of the 15-17 models of any of these.
Way to go Ford! This is one Mustang GT I would definitely own! It's not just the power the car is putting down, it's everything, looks, handling, braking, ride and interior!
Agreed, but in terms of knowledge now of the 3 cars' characteristics... The Hellcat would get embarrassed at everything but the 1/4 mile(and still not win by much), and the GT500 out lapped the ZL1 in terms of best overall lap, but the Camaro was better in terms of endurance/consistency over time. I like all 3, but those Challengers are pigs. I personally want to trade my GT for a GT500, waiting to see if they make one in 2018 or 19 before settling on a 350.
@@vaioskoutis7998 No, not all of us. I HATEed the inside of the Camaro, u can't see SH$T outside of the car while driving.....engine wise, great 6.2L V8.

@AutomotiveReviewers yeah camaros and mustangs are subcompact with the mustang slightly larger than the camaro (6'ers can actually sit in the rear seat), the camaros are decorations, and the challenger is just down right comfy in the srt8 version
@JeffYaddow The general consensus is that the Camaro favored styling over ergonomics and functionality. It doesn't matter how tall you are since you can adjust the height of the seats, but the windows are just ridiculously narrow all around and the A-pillars are obnoxiously thick..just like the steering wheel.. If you have the power seats, your head will literally hit the roof in the Camaro if you're over 6'2ish, and that's with the seat all the way down.
At the end of the day it's all about liking the shape. And I just love the way Camaro looks. Drove all 3 ( + bmw coupe) before committed to buying. All drive beautiful.
+gage brai Now, it will require only YES or NO answer - if your favorite Camaro/Mustang/Challenger looked like Honda Element or Toyota Prius or Nissan Centra, would you buy it?
Oh and you should google the mustangs power rating or read edmands inside line. The new 5.0 is heavily underrated. It's actually about 450-460 at the crank. Insideline dyno'd there's at 394rwhp and 379tq. Mine dyno'd in Oregon, elevation 236. @ 404rwhp and 391tq
@GTO19020 Where am I wrong? from 87-92 the 5.0L was rated at 225hp. What kind of power do you think the Camaro was making at that time? The high points for the Camaro were 230hp with the 305 and 245 for the 350 (89-92). The 350 was auto only and it was heavier so it was still slower than the Mustang even though it had less power. With the extra weight, the 305 wasn't in the running even with the available 5 speed. BTW, the '11 Mustang makes less power but is STILL faster than the '11 Camaro.
@17etnies have you searched about camaro and challenger problems too. if i take your comprehensive research then i assume that every car other than the mustang works flawlessly
@SOFSoldier1 the 392 isnt in the base v8 class? thats left to the boss 302 or shelby gt500 which both spank the 392 in every performance category especially handling.
@JeffYaddow For the 2010 Camaro, KBB says 4.6/5 from 141 ratings.. I never said it was a family car. It's just not that functional for the DRIVER. Are you saying that the windows aren't extremely narrow, that the a-pillars aren't obnoxiously thick, and that the steering wheel isn't fat? Being able to see out of the car easily is important, especially for a "cruiser". My friend is 6'4 and his head was literally up against the ceiling of the car, even with the power seat all the way down.
The 2011+ Mustang GT actually puts more power to the wheels than the Camaro SS, stock vs stock. With that and the weight difference, no wonder it's faster.
@suntannedmedal the R/T has a 5.7 hemi, which only makes 370 hp. but i see what you're saying. they did some stuff to the 2012 dodge charger srt8 that may out perform the challenger.
The real test will be the comparison between the 2013 GT 500 and the Camaro ZL1. I think the mustang might win straight line but may suffer from a solid rear axle on a track. Guess we will see. Not sure why ford doesn't go to independent rear axle. seems like a solid decision.
@Ritchie907 the mustang isnt a head turner, and is WAAYYYY too common. sports cars are supposed 2 stand out, and the mustang definitely doesnt. besides, the mustang only has 2mpg above the camaro, so thats not really a determining factor. BESIDES, the 5.0 models have been having lots of transmission problems, so i wouldnt even consider 1.
Ideally yes, but if you notice, the mustang GT had a brembo brake package and I hope so would the Camaro SS. Since may be the upgraded package is not available in the Chally R/T, they picked the SRT8. Also I believe R/T makes only 375 HP ( with Tremec 6 spd) and Mustang and Camaro makes 410+ HP so that would not be a fair comparo. SRT8 makes 425 HP. However, I would prefer a R/T coz you can still get that good Tremec manual and 395 LBFT of torque to get you quicker off the line, good price too
The way I see it, for the most part cars are just getting better and better. The difference that this video shows are not what most people would not care about. It boils down to preference.
@Drewtitus was speaking about the mustang. Put Flow Masters ro the Attack Borla exhaust. Put a pro charger on it and you have my dream car. DAMN I can't wait to get out of college so I can buy it
I own an srt8 charger and this week i drove a manual coupe mustang, and a automatic convertible mustang.. im thinking on buyin one convertible, but... it doesnt corner as well as the srt8, it moves alot in the corners..
@ Kasra Ghorbani Since when does a car that rips around the skid pad @ 0.92G (Avg) running 275 mm rear tires not have any grip? LOL. I drove this car and it has a ton of grip. A surprising amount actually.
Shouldnt the challenger r/t go against these? And the strt8 vs shelby gt500? The challenger rt is around this price range and the srt 8 is close to the shelby
Boss 302 is in a higher class than the SRT8, but in an ideal race the Boss 302 would win. BUT, only by .1 seconds. Boss 302 stats: 0-60 in 4.2, quarter mile in 12.6 Challenger SRT8 stats: 0-60 in 4.6, quarter mile in 12.7. It may be big and heavy and slower off the line, but that 6.4L V8 with 470lb-ft of torque sure as hell helps! :P I'm a Mustang guy myself, but I gotta admit, the new SRT8 is the new big kid on the block! :P
@ddouglasinc There are a few discrepencies to this. one, the convertible is actually a little lighter. the heavier convertibles are the ones w/ a metal roof that fold in slots. however, the hard top will provide more rigidity, but I doubt that will push it into positive g's, which the boss can pull. On top of the that, the gt500 specs you're looking at are 2011, the gt500 coming in 2012 will be faster w/ improvements. Which means your zl1 is already beaten before its even launched.
Ever notice that when the Camaro SS came out, there were a million reviews. "Let's pit the best from the big three against each other! Chevy wins! Yeah!" Then the Mustang got the 5.0 and more reviews came. "Let's pit the best of the three against each other again for a rematch! Ford wins! Yeah!" Then the Challenger got the 392 engine, and then the reviews. "Dodge did... something to one of their cars. The fat one with the retro name, maybe." No comparisons with the 392, from anybody!
Wow, what a shock - I saw this review and before I watched it I knew what would win - the Ford. Why? It is the newest redesigned car. In the last match up when it was not redesigned, it lost. now it won. What a shock!
wow, anecdotal story, that totally mean much more than a comparison test, especially on a highway where the driver's willingness to be stupid matters much more than the car's dynamics. The other day I passed a genesis coupe in my old focus, WITH WINTER TIRES, so that must mean it's better.
It's amazing what cars do now. We all figured the glory days were gone after the early 70s. I remember a guy boasting his 1978 Plymouth Arrow went 70 in the quarter!
@MIA7Xthies i agree, but it still has great straight line speed. and it has a full size rear seat, which is important to me since i'm always giving friends rides in my car. dodge seriously needs to drop that weight though
@dddjjf could have been driver error, different track conditions, etc. The new shelby GT500 ran a 2:58 lap at VIR when ford drove it but when C&D drove it, they only got 3:04. all 3 cars are quick but tenths of a second differences aside, when I drove the SS and the new 5.0, I did not like the SS at all as a daily driver. would have been fun at the track but that's it. The new 5.0 is just a much better overall driving experience. The SRT8 felt like a C300 with a body kit.
you know i had the 2010 challenger srt8 in black, and just traded the car for the 2012 shelby gt 500. i loved the challenger much more comfortable has the brembo in all 4 wheels. what made me trade the car in was because had a lot of inperfections on the paint, the ac went bad had to replace all the knobs in the console, one wheel the paint peel off had it replaced and when you steped on the gas pedal the car like lagged for a second .so the love just went away. but the shelby oh boy thats sick.
@AutomotiveReviewers quite the opposite where i live. challengers and camaros are very common cars. mustangs 2010 and up are very rare. literally i see one about once a month!
@GTO19020 You still couldn't answer why the 2002 Camaro and the 2011 Camaro are still basically the same in the 1/4 mile despite over a 100hp difference. Oh, I don't own any 1980s vehicles, and where I'm from, cars don't rust /problem?
I also just watched Insidelines video of the 392 vs Charger SRT8 and the 392 still didn't compare to the Mustang other than .2 of a second slower to 60 and a few tenths faster in the 1.4 mile.
@EvilxMerlin the power ratings are proof their main aim are the SS and GT..The 392 is a response to keep itself with the SS and GT, because it weighs 300 lbs more than the SS and 500+ more than the GT. Hence, 420hp was not enough.. as I've said before.. the prices are inflated due to it being a limited production car which is why I'm not comparing prices here... If they were really aiming for the gt500.. a huge curb weight and a measly 470hp would not be on the board.
@AutomotiveReviewers there is man, there is, but not many new ones. the new mustangs are sick and theres no denying it. i wanted a camaro, but the ambient lighting and cheap price for v8 is unbeatable
I understand your point but still for $83K I expect a car that performs on a track at least as well as a Z06. The supersnake is not twice the car of a boss 302.

@jeangrey65 accually, the camaro was made between 2002 and 2010.
Just got a challenger srt8 for 16th birthday present, has everything a kid could ever want
@Skatchwanguyz what are the drawbacks? high performance? affordability? great mpg?
Wow, what a shock - I saw this review and before I watched it I knew what would win - the Ford. Why? It is the newest redesigned car. In the last match up when it was not redesigned, it lost. now it won. What a shock!
@Naughtorios and what about the 1 hp extra on the chevy ? :D
wow, anecdotal story, that totally mean much more than a comparison test, especially on a highway where the driver's willingness to be stupid matters much more than the car's dynamics.
Wow I don't know of any two cars from different companies that look so similiar, the Camaro ss and challenger look nearly identical.
so whats the update for the 2013 pony cars? GT,SS, SRT etc
you know i had the 2010 challenger srt8 in black, and just traded the car for the 2012 shelby gt 500. i loved the challenger much more comfortable has the brembo in all 4 wheels. what made me trade the car in was because had a lot of inperfections on the paint, the ac went bad had to replace all the knobs in the console, one wheel the paint peel off had it replaced and when you steped on the gas pedal the car like lagged for a second .so the love just went away. but the shelby oh boy thats sick.
@AutomotiveReviewers quite the opposite where i live. challengers and camaros are very common cars. mustangs 2010 and up are very rare. literally i see one about once a month!
@GTO19020
You still couldn't answer why the 2002 Camaro and the 2011 Camaro are still basically the same in the 1/4 mile despite over a 100hp difference.
Oh, I don't own any 1980s vehicles, and where I'm from, cars don't rust
/problem?
If they were really aiming for the gt500.. a huge curb weight and a measly 470hp would not be on the board.
from the factory you can upgrade and get a supercharger for the 5.0,and it does not cost an extra 6K.it has 624hp.
@thetruebigdaddy2 the fastest mustang is NOT the gt500, the boss 302 is, just look it up on Motor Trend's website.
@OutInTheRain1 What does the metric system have to do with smaller engines?
Doesnt the Camero have more weight to it? While the Mustang is lighter or am i wrong? I dont know anything about Mustangs
@Nismokid1211 Zl1 you mean.... and whats that have to do with the SS spanking?
@AutomotiveReviewers there is man, there is, but not many new ones. the new mustangs are sick and theres no denying it. i wanted a camaro, but the ambient lighting and cheap price for v8 is unbeatable
I understand your point but still for $83K I expect a car that performs on a track at least as well as a Z06. The supersnake is not twice the car of a boss 302.
that true but how often will you take it to a track?
