Jordan never beat Bird. They made a video. When you figure in all of his injuries, the loss of spinal stability in his back. Sometimes after a game he'd spend the night in traction at the hospital. They would spend four and five hours working on his back just to play a game and him refusing to take any pain killers or shots his entire career. He stands alone. Two videos, the 4 and 5 times Bird was injured but refused to quit. These will give you a much deeper understanding. They said he would struggle to put on his uniform. His physical and mental toughness is not from this planet.

Some other factors to consider when judging Larry as a player:
    - He was Rookie of the Year in the same year when rookie Magic and the Lakers won the Finals, and Magic was named Finals MVP. If we want to say that it was controversial or that it was close, then we also have to note that out of 65 or so votes, 63 were for Bird and 2 were for Magic. So it really wasn't even close.
    - In his rookie season he helped the Celtics go to the Eastern conference finals, with a record of 61-21, where they lost to Dr. J's 76ers. The previous year the Celtics went 29-53.
    - His second season they again faced the 76ers in the Eastern conference finals, this time beating them, and winning the championship.
    - Bird's first exposure to a 3 point line was his rookie year in the NBA, and for his first five seasons he was a power forward. Yet he still won the first three 3 point contests, and averaged at least 50/40/90 shooting from '84 to '87, averaging about 28 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. If you do the math correctly (the NBA doesn't) he has three 50/40/90 seasons.
    - Every season he played, the Celtics made the playoffs or the Finals.
    - His team won 3 out of every 4 games they played with him in the game. (the same is true of Magic with the Lakers)

I was blessed to have been around to watch Wilt Chamberlain play a fair amount, on television, from his late prime years until around 1970. He was unbelievable and my favorite player to watch play the game. He is my choice for the all-time greatest, going by what I saw and his stats. That said, Larry Bird became, and still is, my all-time favorite player to watch play basketball. He did stuff that was jaw dropping and head shaking, in the framework of the team, almost every game. To me, he was more fun to watch than the Globe Trotters, while being serious as a heart attack.

I'm from Cleveland and I'm grateful to Lebron for the Championship he helped bring to the Cavs. I can't give the goat title to him, in my opinion players that jump from team to team like KD and Lebron as well as others to form super teams in order to win titles can't be considered the goat. Can you imagine how many titles would have been won if MJ, Bird and Magic would have formed a super team. Their thought process was I want to Beat the best not join them.

Bird had Bron's passing, KD's midrange shooting touch, Curry's long range and free throw accuracy, Jokers rebounding skills', Kobe and MJ's killer will, and more clutch than any player in history! In a 9-year run from 1980 to 1989, Larry Bird got 67% of all MVP votes that were cast. All other players combined only received 33% of the votes. in an era that included the players who eventually made up the dream team and a large list of HOF-ers

Who on earth would have put money on Larry beating Olajuwon on that jump ball? Who could have imagined the Celtics would come back from being down one against the Pistons with five seconds left and the Pistons with possession? Whether or not Isaiah screwed up, no one but Larry was there to take advantage of it. You just couldn't ever count him out.

I appreciate you giving James the nod over MJ, because you're right. What people forget is that MJ's dynasty came during one of the NBAs weakest era's and he did it all with the second best player in the entire league as his teammate. Pip would be the 1 on any other team in the league at that point. Since MJ, his style has been mimicked by every kid with a ball. No one played like him in the 90's so he stood out(plus he had the media). Now, tons of guys play that style of ball. A style that Bird dominated, even sweeping him in the playoffs each time they met. MJ started winning when Bird retired. People love to blame it on Jordan being young, but Bird was old and hurt. Not only that, but Bird as a rookie turned the worst team into contenders in his first season and got a ring against mega talents in a much harder to play era in his second year. His play was so good he tuned a bench player named McHale into a HOFer. And not for nothing, but Bird is the best forward to ever play(would kill in todays soft ass league), same position Bron plays. So where does that place Larry Legend? Exactly.

I grew up a fan of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, but the player who could beat you the most ways with the most skills was Larry Bird. Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, mid-range scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years. Bird was the Batman of the NBA. He was always several moves ahead of the competition, best clutch shooter of all-time, #2 all-time with winning percentage (Jordan is #40), he had the passing gift, and he could beat you more ways than just shooting. Jordan was dangerous when he had the ball. Bird was always dangerous - with or without the ball. Bird is top three all-time with Jordan and LeBron, but Bird is the best small forward of all-time. Hands down.
"If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird." - Legendary Lakers Coach Pat Riley
“I would much rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird, because you have to play the game as a thinker when you’re playing [Bird]. You have to get inside his mind. Larry wasn’t quick, he couldn’t jump really high, but there were just some sleepless nights.”
-James Worthy on Larry Bird, via ESPN SportsCentury
" The difference between Jordan and Bird was that Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. " - James Worthy
“Larry Bird can’t jump, and he’s not that quick… But he makes up for it by using his head, analyzing the opponent. It makes him better than the competition… Consequently, he doesn’t have a weakness.” - Michael Jordan
Only one man dominated Jordan. His name was Larry Joe Bird. Bird even dominated Jordan after Bird’s back problems got worse in 1989.

I grew up a Lakers fan with Magic as my favorite player ever and hating the Celtics. It took years for me to acknowledge how good Larry was, but facts are facts. Larry was a threat from anywhere on the court and then a passing/ play maker threat. He told players what he was going to do and that there was nothing they could do to stop him. Jordan and Kobe played left handed when they had to, Larry did it for fun because the opposition wasn’t a big enough challenge. All the players that when up against Larry acknowledge how great he was. Larry defined clutch. I have Larry as #4 all time.

My argument for Larry as the GOAT is easy: If I were starting an NBA team and I could pick any one player to start that team with, who would I pick? The answer is Larry. Lots of great individual players but Larry took a team with 29 wins as a rookie to a team with 61 wins.
That just speaks to what he brings to a team, not just his individual stats.
Like the video, you don't have to bad mouth players to get to the point. The argument that Jordan is the GOAT is absolutely valid but Jordan as a rookie didn't have the team impact that Bird had as a rookie.
If I'm starting from scratch, I'm building a team around Bird.

Magic is often credited with being the best at making his teammates better as a reason why he is better than Larry Bird. On the other hand, many people in favor of Larry Bird point out that Magic had better teammates or a weaker conference to explain Magic's better playoffs record. There are too many variables for me to make accurate judgments about this, but I looked into the win percentages when each team had and didn't have their star player from 1979/1980-1988/1989 before Bird's injuries took such a toll.
When Magic was playing, the Lakers won 73.88% of their games. When he wasn't playing, they won 59.61%
When Bird was playing, the Celtics won 73.6% of their games, and when he wasn't, they won 53.8%
So Magic was worth 14.27% in win percentage to the Lakers and Bird was worth 19.8% to the Celtics with the Celtics performing a hair better when Magic and Bird were around and significantly better when Magic and Bird were missing.
Ultimately, I think the win percentages (both with and without the star players) and the head-to-head record speaks to the superiority of the Lakers to the Celtics (especially the other players of the two teams), but I think the win percentage differential absent the star player is fairly strong evidence that Bird added more value to the Celtics than Magic did to the Lakers. Both players are clearly phenomenal, but I would give the edge to Bird as the more complete and impactful player.

  • @Widdermaker
    @Widdermaker 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

You don’t get it because you weren’t there. The players who WERE there say it’s either Larry, Magic, Kareem, or MJ. The only reason Larry and his Celtics didn’t win in ‘85 is because Larry got a broken finger on his right hand in a bar fight after an ECF game against the 76ers. That’s the reason he missed that long jumper near the end of this video that would have beaten the Lakers in that game. The entire Boston Garden actually gasped out loud when it didn’t go in, since Larry ALWAYS made them in the clutch. Larry didn’t tell anyone he’d broken his hand because, unlike LrBron, he’s not a whiner. A reporter found out about it in the off-season. If Larry’d made that shot, the series would have had come back to Boston. How good were the Celtics at home in Boston? The next year they went 40-1 at home; 50-1 if you include the playoffs. No team has done that since. Not the Lakers; not the Bulls; not the Warriors. Larry would have 4 rings, including 3 straight (‘84-‘86) if not for that broken hand. Also, he played hard night in and night out in a much more physical NBA than the soft, rainbow shooting, quick-whistle league we have today. Artis Gilmore, one of the top NBA Centers of all time, told Larry that he wouldn’t last long if he kept punishing his body diving for loose balls and mixing it up underneath the basket. But Bird ALWAYS gave 200%. Regardless. In 1987, he could have been only the 4th player in NBA history to get a quadruple double in a game, needing just 1 more steal - but sat down anyway at the end of the 3rd QUARTER saying he’d done enough damage to the other team already. Yes, he had another entire quarter to get that steal, but sat out anyway. Larry shortened his career getting a bad back in the off-season in the late-‘80’s shoveling gravel putting in a new driveway for his mom, despite easily being able to afford hiring someone else to do it. Otherwise, his longevity and stats would have been even better. You need to watch more videos on Bird and hear some of the all-time greats talk about him - including Michael Jordan. They played against him - so they know. Jordan had a losing record against Bird and the Celtics - getting swept TWICE in the playoffs!

Larry was simply a magic show every time he took the court. There was never a moment that you doubted that he would hit the last shot or do something to turn it around. The Celtics are down by 9 with 45 seconds left? Give it to Larry, something will happen! That being said, Magic was pure gold too. Lebron is great, don't get me wrong. But he comes across as weak if you watched basketball 30, 20, or even 10 years ago. He whines and changes teams like a desperate man. Most of the true goats stayed where they were and made their team great no matter who was helping them out. All that said, there was no one ever close to Jordan. You were talking clutch and I am reminded of what Laker Coach Pat Riley said..and you can interpret for yourself what he meant..as well as what Isiah Thomas meant about Bird being the one who walks out of the room…Pat said if he had to pick one, player to win a game, he would pick Jordan but if he had to pick one player to save his life, he would have to pick Larry Bird..and you still have Larry Joe Bird sitting at 5..without looking at the Larry Bird Ultimate Mix tape..that showcases his passes…Inbounding the ball, Bird would throw full court passes for assist layups and dunks and slams..they said he should have need a quarterback..watch his passing videos..he was the best..in all areas..the reason they are called baskets..is when Naismith invented the game..he had peach baskets nailed up on the wall, and when someone made a basket, they had to go up a ladder to get the ball out..but, that was early basketball…some, game scre were 6 to 5 ..or 10-8..because they didn’t cut the bottom out of the basket..that is history..and so was Bird..Bird played damaged and Magic got HIV…both retired about the same time..Magic quit first, but came back for awhile..

Larry Bird received 67% of all MVP votes in the entire decade of the 1980's he could of easily won 10 MVP 's but the media didn't like him all that much. Some of the greatest players in NBA history played in that era and Bird still schooled every one of them including Michael Jordan!!! Bird is the most efficient scorer the NBA has ever seen. He went on a 5 year strech where he shot 50-40-90 % from the field. Only a few players ever did it once and Larry Bird did 5 years in a row. Just because he doesn't have all the stats because of his short carrer is why some people keep him out of the top 10. He dominated everybody he played against . Jordan , Kode, and lebron had no rivals like Bird had. Bird faced way more hall of famers and stiffer competition in my opinion

Larry Bird is my #2 behind Wilt Chamberlain. But Larry is the best Non-Center ever! Michael Jordan: “Larry was a debate. He still is. People ask me all the time who my all-time five top players are, and when I start saying Larry, they interrupt me. They say, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. He can’t play with LeBron James!’ I tell them, ‘You guys don’t get it. Larry is far better than any small forward who played the game.” Larry won the rookie of the year in 1979-1980 season over Magic Johnson with a vote of 63 for Larry and 3 votes for Magic. The year before Larry came to the Celtics, Boston had a 29-53 record. With just basically Larry joining the team in the 79-80 season, they improved by 32 games with a record of 61-21 (Robert Parish and Kevin McHale did not arrive until Larry's second season). Larry was 4th in MVP voting in his rookie year. Larry was the only non-Center to win MVP three times in a row (83-84, 84-85, 85-86) and only the third person (Chamberlain & Russell) to do so. In the 80-81, 81-82, 82-83, 87-88 seasons, Larry finished 2nd in the MVP voting and 3rd in the 86-87 season. So in Larry's first 9 seasons, he was first or second in seven seasons. Larry was the first and second person to be in the 50-40-90 Club (50% field Goal, 40% 3 point shooting, 90% free throws) by doing it in the 86-87 season (52%, 40%, 91%) 87-88 season (53%, 41%, 92%) and almost had it in the 84-85 season (52%, 43%, and 88%). Larry won the first three, 3 point shooting contests (85-86, 86-87, 87-88, was injured in the 88-89 season). Just think how great Larry could have been at the 3 point shooting if he was practicing it in high school, and college. the Fact is the 3 point line started in Larry's rookie season, so he never practiced three pointers before that. in his first 5 seasons, Larry's 3 point shooting average was in the 20's percent. he finished his career with a 37% average. But was way above the NBA average for that time. After his senior year in college, he hurt and mangled his index finger beyond repair, on his shooting hand in a softball game. Larry stated he never shot the ball as well after the injury (just think how much better he could have been). In the 1984-85 season, the Celtics won the first two games of the Eastern Conference finals against the Philadelphia 76ers. Larry went to bars to celebrate. Larry got in a bar fight and punched a person, injuring his shooting hand (swollen). The Celtics won the series 4-1, and played the Lakers in the Finals, But Larry's productivity and shooting percentage was not the same as before the injury, costing the Celtics a chance at back to back champions (and a three peat, since they won it all again the next season.) Part of the reason Larry did not have more championships compared to Magic Johnson, was the Eastern Conference had a much harder path to the championship, having to play the Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls. While the Lakers had Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Denver Nuggets, Seattle Super Sonics, Utah Jazz. Larry was also the GOAT in Trash Talking, playing mind games with his opponents. Michael Jordan stated, “Larry Bird is the greatest trash talker and mind-game player of all time. He taught me everything I know about getting in folks’ heads.” Did you know that Michael Jordan never won a game against Larry Bird and the Celtics in the playoffs. they played twice in the playoffs and the Celtics won both series 3-0. In the summer of 1985, Larry Bird injured his back shoveling gravel, as he was building a driveway for his mother's house. From that time forward, he had back issues. In the 1988-89 season, Larry played in six games, as he was playing with bone spurs in both of his heels and the pain was getting too bad to ignore. He had surgery on both feet to remove the bone spurs and missed the rest of the season. He returned in the 89-90 season, but from that point on, he missed games due to his painful back injury. In his 13 seasons (including his 88-89, 6 game season) he made the All star team 12 times. In his first 9 seasons (before missing the 88-89 season) Larry was voted on the 1st team All NBA Team. Most clutch shooter in the last minutes of a game. Larry was not about the numbers. He was a total team player, which is why he has a career average of 10 rebounds per game, 6.3 assists per game and 1.7 steals per game. One of the best persons at passing the ball (in my opinion, better than Magic). Larry was all about winning. it did not matter if he scored or if he passed the ball to a team mate to score, except at the end of a close game, Larry wanted the ball. there were numerous games where Larry scored 40 plus points and took himself out of the game at the end of the third quarter, as the game was well in hand. While playing against the Utah Jazz, he took himself out of the game at the end of the 3rd Quarter, needing one more steal for a quadruple double. When his coach found out about it, he asked Larry if he wanted to go back in to get another steal, Larry replied, "No, I did enough damage" (30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 9 steals). Larry's shooting percentage would have been higher, but he would get bored in the games and to spice things up for himself, he would shoot the ball with higher degrees of difficulty to challenge himself. shooting left handed, banking shots off the backboard, etc. He was amazing. I grew up hating Larry Bird, as I was a Milwaukee Bucks fan and Bird always killed the Bucks. As I have aged, I have come to appreciate just how great Larry Bird was.

Here are the top MVP stats covering Larry Bird's results over his 12 year career. Considering the fact every team in the league had several "Hall of Fame" players. I think Larry's feat of being in the top tier of MVP voting for his first nine years is remarkable. Even after the season when he played six games due to foot surgery, he managed to play pretty well for his last two years (plus his stint on the "Dream Team"). I'm not sure he is the Goat, but he is my choice as the most versatile all around player, and these stats certainly moved him up a couple of spots on my really fluid goat list!
NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS
    In his twelve year career Larry had 3 X 1st's, 4 X 2nd's, 1 X 3rd, 1 X 4th (Rookie year), 1 X 10th, & 1 X 14th (last two years).

Some people might use Larry only playing 13 years against him, and those same people use the number of years LeBron has played as a reason he is the GOAT. I will not say one is better than the other, as they have their own talents and have both been good for the game. I also would not use the fact that Larry and Magic, along with David Stern, saved basketball as a reason to say Larry is the GOAT.
To discuss Larry and Magic's final appearances, let's look at it this way. Larry went to the finals 5 times and won 3 for 60%. Magic went to the finals 9 times and won 5 for 55.5%.
James Worthy and Michael Cooper both said Larry was the hardest person to guard because you didn't have to just guard him when he had the ball. Larry was just as dangerous without the ball.
Being voted coach or executive of the year has no proof of how good of a player Larry was.
I love Pat Riley's view of who was clutch. He was asked if he could pick one player to take a shot to win a game and he said Michael Jordan. He then added if he had to pick a player to take a shot to save his life he would pick Larry Bird.

Magic didn't have to face Jordan, the Bad Boy Pistons, Dominique, Dr J & Moses Malone, or Moncreef. Magic really only had one real competitor in the West. Olajuwon. Regular season of course, outside of crossover games. On 'clutch'.....""If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I'd choose Michael Jordan," Pat Riley said. "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I'd take Larry Bird." - Pat Riley. Case Closed. Honestly I think Reggie Miller is the greatest clutch player of all time. Statistically he has more clutch shots of any player in history 85 forward. (stats before then are hard to come by. Even stats from 84-1997 are hard to extrapulate).

I found your reaction to this video interesting. I RESPECT your opinion Larry LEGEND is No. 5 on your list of Top 5 players. That's okay. Everyone is different & we all can't agree. But, I do notice you compared Magic Johnson a lot to Larry in your reaction. Both Bird & Johnson are on Clayton Crowley's list of his 8 players worthy of GOAT consideration. Throughout their careers, Johnson always played on the more talented teams. In college, Johnson's team was far superior to Larry's. In the NBA, it was much more even between the Lakers & Celtics. But, CONSIDER this when you compare Bird & Johnson. On Crowley's list of 8 possible GOAT contenders, I believe 2 are Laker players, Johnson & Kareem. So once again, Johnson has ANOTHER advantage over Bird. Johnson & Kareem are the only players on Crowley's list of 8 players to have PLAYED TOGETHER. Bird didn't have the LUXURY of playing alongside ANOTHER GOAT. Magic's career BENIFITED from having ANOTHER GOAT on his starting line-up. So, please, TAKE THIS FACT into consideration when making your comparison between Magic & Larry Legend. I enjoyed viewing your reaction and respecting your thoughts. Thank you, sir.

How can you say Jordan is the GOAT when he was swept two playoff 3 games then the next year 3 games.
Jordan has a losing record to Bird. Don’t say because Jordan was young, because Bird won his first championship in the second year, he played in the NBA.
