Did Stephen Curry ever win the NBA Three-point contest 3 years in a row?
The players back in the 80s were not necessarily worse shooters. It's just that the game was much more in your face physical back in the 80s. You basically cannot touch anyone today.

My reaction to Your reaction: Bald numbers don't tell the entire tale. They just don't, for so many reasons but I also don't think anything anyone said, with precise numbers or not, would sway your conviction.
You seem to believe the past generations of players who spoke or expert analysts who were there at the time are just old fools.
You have a right to your opinion. That's just my reaction to your video. 🙂

The 3 wasn't even introduced until Bird's first year. None of those players practiced that shot. Thats why none of them shot it, yet Bird used it anyway.....to win games when it was needed...and still made it. The fact that he shot 42% when unpracticed....to someone that grew up from childhood shooting it....and hitting 45.....which is the more impressive? Yea...thought so.

@LockIn76 I really don't get what you don't understand. Curry came up understanding the concept of the 3ptr shot.
Bird was literally already a professional before it existed.
What is he even talking about? Well to anyone with even a vague understanding of English, the language you read that comment in, it's clear and obvious.
Why don't you do the last bit of research and find out what Curry thinks of Bird.

Larrys 3pt% was affected earlier in his career when he played Power Forward and the 3pt was very new, he developed that 3pt. From 1983/4 onwards though the 3pt% increased dramatically. If Larry had the time to develop it in high school and college he'd have been 40%+ every single season.

What you don't understand is Larry Bird wasn't saying Curry was a bad shooter. He didn't know. And honestly, Larry IS a better shooter than Steph Curry. Curry is a better 3-point shooter, but how good is his game everywhere on the floor?
Combined with the fact of the hard physicality of '80's basketball, yeah Larry is better. But pure 3 pointers? Yeah, I'll give it to Curry.
I like Curry (unlike LeBron, he has some skill). Not trying to get on my sandbox about Larry but he is a better shooter because he made them when they were heavily contested.
Larry was right. The 3's don't matter unless you can do it under pressure to win the game. L's and W's is all that Larry cared about. And that choice to care about only the W's and L's still made him one of the greatest (I think the greatest but that's splitting hairs for this conversation) players of all time.
So yeah, Curry can have that 3- point title. Larry doesn't need it nor did he ever want it. Larry was concerned for the game not his stats. Not saying Curry is a stat chaser, I don't know him well enough to say that, but most players in today's game are stat chasers and that is selfish. I'd rather not award players who are greedy no matter how good they are.

yea you need a 3 point shot today.. but just like ANY era of basketball, the players and teams that can do inside and out, fast pace and half court, offense and defense, iso and off ball movement, ball sharing, are the teams that dominate and are remembered... in other words, WELL ROUNDED players and teams.. not just players that can shoot and drive.. but mid range, post up, rebounds, setting picks, off ball movement, defense...

I wont say Bird is a better 3 point shooter than Curry.. as far as SHOOTER tho.. Bird got MORE 50/40/90 seasons than Curry has sooo.. there IS an argument for best OVERALL shooter (KD and Steve Nash also have a say in that)..
but again, bird DIDNT practice the 3 ball and was STILL great at it.. would Steph be THAT great if he DIDNT practice shooting 3s like he does TODAY?..
but as it stands, Steph is the greatest 3 point shooter in my eyes..

From anywhere on the floor Bird was unreal and in a clutch situation just forget about it. Face it from inside Bird just had more size and mid range nobody ever knew what Bird was going to do. Absolutely no disrespect to Steph because from deep I’ve only seen one player that could hang with him.

so then it makes sense that Larry Bird would ALSO be a BETTER 3 point shooter TODAY.. correct? if the the ENTIRE LEAGUE progressed in 3 points shot attempts, makes and percentages, than its logical to assume that Larry Bird, whom DIDNT practice shooting the 3, would be BETTER than his 42% 1985 clip...
so 28% to 35% is a 7% jump.. if we apply 7% to Larry Bird 1985 42% clip, Take 1% away to account for MARGIN OF ERROR (i didnt use the ACTUAL equation used in statistical analysis of a controlled population, which the NBA is a controlled population and Larry Bird is part of said controlled population so I just used a nice round number of 1) bird's 1985 three point % of 42 would jump to 48%... at the very least...
    Let me dumb that down.
the league got 7% better at shooting 3s from 1985 to 2016. Larry Bird, one of the best shooters of that era, would logically have gotten better as well.. and one can assume that it would be at the same rate the the REST of the league got better in.. since you know, he wa already one of the best AT IT..
if you guna knock the rest of the league for shooting lower 3 point percentages than you must also understand that Larry Bird was shooting at a lower percentage back than, and like the rest of the league, he would be shooting HIGHER NOW...

Jordan has said he learned his trash talk from watching Larry Bird and how he could get into other player's heads.
If Larry Bird had grown up with the 3 pt. shot, like todays players have, there would be no questioning his 3 pt. ability. The most he ever shot in a game was like seven. He averaged something like four a game for his career. With extra work on the three, he would have dominated. Multiple 50/40/90 averages and founder...that shows how great a shooter he was anyway.
Ultimately, I pomise you that Larry Bird could not care less what JJ Redick says about him. He knows what his game was and what he could and did do. What JJ Redick says does not factor into it at all.

What makes Steph Curry the greatest shooter ever??

    • @JayHemmsSports
      @JayHemmsSports  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Stephen Curry is the greatest shooter ever because:
      - He holds the record for the most 3-pointers made in NBA history
      - He set the record for most threes made in a season with 402 in 2015-2016
      - He has a 43% shooting percentage from 3-point range while attempting almost 10 3-pointers per game
      - He has led the league in 3-pointers made 8 times, an NBA record
      - His versatility with the 3-point shot is amazing. Steph is excellent at catch-and-shoot and spot-up shooting, can score off the dribble, and has an incredible range on his 3-pointers. His shooting ability is so respected that defenders must guard him as soon as he crosses half-court.
      - He has also significantly impacted the game, revolutionizing it by popularizing the 3-point shot. Everyone is shooting threes now because of Stephen Curry.

@@JayHemmsSports How about this - Steph Curry overall field goal % 47.3
Larry Bird overall field goal % 49.5
So, whose the better overall shooter???
Shooting is not just about 3 pt fg's.
It's about making shots in pressure situations when the game is on the line.
Steph Curry is not even in the top 10 3pt % makers of all time.
Larry Bird won the first 3 3pt shooting contests.
Larry Bird has made more 3pters in clutch situations.
Bird started the 50-40-90 club - that's 50% or more overall FG%, 40% or more 3pt % and 90 % or more free throw shooting.
As a matter of fact, Bird averaged 50-40-90 over a 4 year stretch during his career and had 2 50-40-90 seasons back to back. Curry has done it once.
Just because Curry takes and makes the most 3pt shots that does not make him the greatest shooter.

    • @JayHemmsSports
      @JayHemmsSports  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@robgelfand2414
Comparing overall field goal percentage (FG%) alone doesn't necessarily mean someone is a better shooter. If that were the case, LeBron would be considered a better shooter than Bird and Curry, which we both know isn't true. I personally believe LeBron is the greatest of all time (GOAT). We have to consider the context and other factors beyond just FG%.
Moreover, when people discuss shooting, especially in today's game, they often focus on three-point shooting. Even in the video, the narrator was talking about three-point percentages. Regarding Curry not being in the top 10 of all-time three-point percentage makers, Steve Kerr holds the highest three-point percentage in NBA history, despite only averaging 2 three-point attempts per game for his entire career. Like C'mon lol.
Additionally, when the argument is made that Curry takes and makes the most three-point shots, it doesn't automatically make him the greatest shooter. The conversation should include his three-point percentage, his ability to utilize the three-point shot in different ways (catch-and-shoot, spot-up shooting, off-the-dribble), and his incredible range on his three-pointers. Not to mention, his shot difficulty is off the charts! He's often guarded well beyond the three-point line, which adds another layer of complexity to his shooting abilities.

@@JayHemmsSports If you practice and do things over and over the better you get at it. The fact that Steve Nash didn't take that many 3's but made them at a higher percentage shows how great a shooter he was. As far as defense is concerned - are you going to tell me that the defense is better in today's game than it was in Birds era? That's a joke, right?
A few other things - Bird used to tell the opposing team where he would shoot from before a play would start - even during the biggest moments of a game, and they still could not stop him.
That's how great a shooter Bird was.
Steph is great but he's no Bird.
As for who the GOAT is - first criteria has to be defined. There are several players that can be argued are the GOAT.

If you do a research about which player made the most 3-point clutch shots in the last seconds of a game, you will probably not find many who has ever managed that better than Larry Bird. People today also many times forget that Larry Bird played at a time where the game was intensely physical regarding player contact. Today, you can hardly touch an opponent without getting a fault.
The game today where people all wait at the 3 -point line is boring compared to the game in the 1980s and 1990s.
