*I like Shinedown's version better and I'm a huge Skynyrd fan. But Shinedown didn't cover this song just because they liked it. Jasin Todd (former Shinedown guitarist) is married to Melody Van Zant. Melody is the daughter of Ronnie Van Zant (singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd). The little girl in the video is their daughter and the picture she's holding is of her Grandpa Ronnie.*

It's not who's better. Both are awesome in their own right. Brent didn't set out to do it better. He put his own flavor and did it his way which is how you pay respect to the original by not being a copy cat but a reinterpretation. Seen Brent sing this live about a dozen times and he does it a little different as time goes on as a continual evolution of his interpretation. Dig deeper into the Shinedown history and you'll find there's even more to the story.

Honestly I think people especially in these comments have too much of a bias towards the original version. People have been listening to this song for almost 50 years now since it came out in 1973. Shinedown's version from a vocalist standpoint blows the orignal out of the water, now that being said some people like the more chill original version without the high vocals. I like Shinedown's version better but the story telling and chill vibe of the original is nice as well.

This is a tribute not a cover. ❤ The guitarist is married to Melody Van Zant. The little girl in the video is holding her Granpa Ronnie’s picture. Brent Smith the singer use to sing this in The Freebird cafe for Judy Ronnie’s widow. Lynyrd Skynyrd gave this song to Brent Smith because he had so much love & respect for Ronnie’s family. Shinedown has more #1 hits on the rock charts than any other band. Suggest Planet 🌎 Zero & Daylight both hit number one ☝️. ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Both are great. Ronnie and the gang made a masterpiece of a song...and shinedown did a beautiful tribute. It isn't about who did it better. If you were able to ask shinedown...they would say they would never want to "out do" a band they idolize..they just love the song and want to do it justice. No competition. Just paying respects to a brilliant band from their state and keeping a masterpiece alive with the future generations

What a beautiful version of this classic song by Shinedown. Love the power & control in his voice. I have always loved this song by Lynyrd Skynyrd from 1973 & the beautiful message it conveyed of a mother giving advice to her son.

Shinedown did the song as a thank you & tribute to Ronnie's Widow and family for helping out the band. The guitarist was married to Ronnie's daughter so they had ties to LS. LS has always liked & respected their version & actually asked Brent to come up on stage & sing it with them at a show. Shinedown put a short up on their page.

I have known this almost my entire life. I was 6 when it was brand new... I was and still am a nerdy musical savant!! LS still has my heart today, being 55+ years old but I HAVE to admit this. Shinedown HANDS DOWN did this song SO ABOVE LS's capabilities that I am having a hard time admitting this!! Shinedown is the true winner to me. 🥰 SO well done.

I grew up with Skynyrd and always loved this song. To take an iconic song by an iconic band and do it justice is hard. There’s a few that I can think of. Listen Brent Smith has, to me, one of the best voices in Rock today. He did the song justice. He sings unbelievable, but Skynyrd’s version is much more emotional as a mother talking to her son. I love Brent’s version, but Skynyrd’s is the original, and being a true Skynyrd fan, you can’t beat the original. But Brent’s version is awesome cuz I just LOVE Shinedown.

For me it’s the Original ( studio or live ), it’s the voice, the emotion and the band. The guitars, but also drums and keys, of course Ronnie’s voice can rise above all the Instruments. When I hear Skynyrd, I feel Ronnie is talking to me, I first heard this some when I was 17 or 18.
Not taking anything away from Shinedown, I head his version 7 or 8 years ago, my friend said I have a song for you, then I played her Skynyrds version and she was amazed.

The Shinedown version is more my style. The original is awesome but belongs more to my Dad's generation. My teenage years were spent in the '80s with the hair bands. As I moved through my 20s and '30s, experiencing the challenges, rewards, pain, and emotion that life delivers... Shinedown, Chris Cornell, Disturbed, System of a Down, and many others became my soundtrack and connected with my soul in a way that the classic rock of the '60s and '70s doesn't.

I've been a huge Skynyrd fan for over 25 years and this song means more to me recently than I can say and I don't think either one is better or worse, to me it's apples and oranges because they are very different times of music and this is more of a tribute then a cover because as the comment below stated there is a much bigger reason for the song than just because they liked it or just thought it would be a hit. For those reasons I can't say one is better than the other, they are both ridiculously amazing for their own reasons

I disagree, you can have a fantastic songwriter that isn't a great singer. If someone covers the same song but is objectively a better singer then it very much can be better than the original. With this particular cover though who did it better is the wrong question, people should be talking about which one they prefer to listen to.

I think sometimes people wanna be just bullish on originals over covers. They don't want to accept that someone can come along and just do it better. No disrespect to Lynyrd Skynyrd and their version of simple man because it's my favorite song from them. it's a phenomenal song and it's done extremely well. I didn't think it could be outdone until I heard Brent Smith's booming and passionate vocals. And again, I'm not trying to take anything from Ronnie Van zant's vocals. He is a great singer. But much like in the nineties when I heard soundgarden for the 1st time and Chris Cornell's vocals just stood out above everything.. I get the same vibes with shinedown. Brent Smith is just an elite level singer. This is much akin to Dolly Parton and I will always love you versus Whitney's version. Whitney's version just takes it to another level much like Brent's voice does it for this song.

No way this is better than Lynyrd skynyrd. There is more than the voice. Skynyrd layered the guitars ,bass and drums into their song. This guy might as well not even had the guitar.

It's a good cover but I gotta pick the original. Not crazy about Shinedown lately but they did this pretty well.
