Kel n Rich, I can tell you a lot about the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd because I use to play with them. But this is the first time I have heard of Shinedown's version of Simple Man. It brought tears to my eyes and memories of these old friends of mine came flooding back. I have a new favorite band. Thank-You Kel n Rich for bringing this to my attention. God Bless you all. :-)

@jumpoff A - their guitarist at the time was dating Ronnie Van Zant's granddaughter and they used to perform this at the Van Zant's club in Florida at their behest.
You two are perfect for each other, it's so obvious the way Kel looks at you Rich. Love your reactions guys, you are both so passionate about the music you listen to and its refreshing
Shinedown was one of my favorite bands in high school and it was THIS cover of 'Simple Man' that hooked me. I can confidently recommend 'Burning Bright' if you guys want another great one from their first album. By the way I really enjoy your reactions!
Hi Kel and Rich. My Brother and I recently went to see Skynyrd at Birmingham UK 30th June 2019 to celebrate my 60th Birthday. We are both life long fans. And we thought it would be a great idea to take our Mother, she is 85. She loves music of all genres but had never been to a full on rock concert. She is not a total stranger to rock music as both her growing teenage sons would often fill the house with heavy loud music from the stereo record player or electric guitars, she never complained. Lynyrd Skynyrd played Simple Man that evening and it was very emotional singing along to this classic with our Mother stood between us. A very lovely moment.

Hearing shinedown play this song live, and hearing the crowd sing along, is such a great experience to witness and it’s by far one of my favorite cover songs out there. I went to the Rockville show this year when they played that song live. It was awesome hearing it live.
I saw Shinedown with Godsmack this past September and they were phenomenal! I was there for Godsmack, but came out a huge fan of Shinedown as well! Love your reactions!! Keep em comin!!!
The Skynyrd version was a real classic and in my opinion better, don't get me wrong the Shinedown version was awesome, and the vocals were great, but the original version is more in line with a mother speaking to a son. With the soft, mellow and smooth tones......I may be a old man and used to the original, but that is my opinion.
Shinedown is insane . one of the best new bands in the last 20 years every single they come out with becomes a huge hit for them they kick all forms of ass . bret,s got a major voice and there playing is crazy good love these guys

We always want to achieve new levels and keep growing the brand.” And he wants fans to leave their concerts better than when they arrived. “They spend time with us and it’s our duty as entertainers to give them the best we can," Kerch said. “I hope that they're able to let their day go, whatever is going on in their life, good or bad. Brent Smith from Shinedown is a phenomenal singer. They are one of my favourite bands, they are touring over here in UK with Alter Bridge in December. You need to check out more of them. I recommend 45, Fly From The Inside, I Dare You or Second Chance
Shinedown is amazing, and Brent Smith's vocals are always spectacular. I used this song, specifically the Shinedown version, for my mother-son dance at my wedding. Honestly, most of Shinedown's work is great, but I would suggest the "Sound of Madness" album. It's their best selling album, and almost every song is worth listening to. If I had to choose a specific song, I would suggest either #IfYouOnlyKnew or #SecondChance
First of all... I just started watching your reaction videos and... You two are probably now two of my favorite people. You're so kind, compassionate and caring and you have such a genuine reaction to both emotional songs and videos as well as just... Raw talent when it comes to musicians and I can respect the HELL out of that. I've been a LONG TIME fan of Shinedown and there aren't enough people out there who do reaction videos to this song and have a reaction as powerful as yours is (it's very similar to the reaction I had when I first heard it). Growing up, Simple Man by Skynyrd was my favorite song. Hands down. And then having this cover of it came out just took the cake for me. I only recently had the chance to see Shinedown in concert for the first time, seeing as they hadn't been to Canada in over 6 years and let me tell you... There's NOTHING like standing in the crowd and listening to them perform this song. NOTHING. Thank you guys SO much for your raw and real reaction to this. You guys ROCK.
Love the way he sings this. I was personally pissed when I heard someone was covering this and waited 2 years to even listen. I was surprised when I was actually impressed but I still have to stay with the original and sprinkle this in occasionally. I’m from the South so I love to hear the twang in the voice and guitar in the original. But props to Shinedown.

Shinedown is easily one of my favorite groups. I've seen them live a dozen times. It's been great to see them evolve musically. You should check out the track "How Did You Love". They don't even look or sound like the same group. If you ever get a chance to see them DO IT!
love the song love LYNYRD SKYNYRD The great Ronnie Van Zant one of the best singer songwriters ever R.I.P. Mister i have practiced a lot on LS songs as a drummer
This is one of the few times when a cover, in my opinion, outshines the original and i am a big fam of Lynyrd Skynyrd. This song opened me up to Shinedown, Brent Smith has awesome vocal range.
check out the album "Leave a Whisper" by Shinedown. Their first album, and from the same time period this song was recorded. I saw them 4 times on that tour, and to this day is the best live band I have ever seen. Brent Smith has the voice of an angel.
so jealous of Kel being able to listen to it for the first time! such a beautiful song, great reaction guys. so sad we lost those great musicians. one of the coolest vocalists ever.
I saw Shinedown with Van Halen in SLC they blew me away. Also, Eddie Van Halen had his 15 yr old son at the time come out on stage and finish his guitar solo...man oh man!!!
Had an almost identical conversation with my grandma( raised in the Southern US, like Lynyrd Skynyrd) this song depicts, a tearjerker, Ronnie Van Zant could evoke emotion like few can. But the Shinedown cover is 99% as good. Great reactions, thanks for your site.
You guys are beautiful, you seem so in love, i could feel it when the song started and Kel looked at you at the begining of the song with so much love, and a few moments later when she grabbed your hand, you brought tears to my eyes...! i envy you...
I saw Shinedown a few weeks ago. I was needing with a cane & up front. At the time, Zach the guitarist gave me his wrist band, the bassist, Eric gave me a pic & the drummer Barry gave me a drum stick. Great guys! handed me a drumstick.
Did you know that both Skynyrd and Shindown came from the same place, Jacksonville Florida. When Skynyrd came back in the mid 80s to the present day, it was Ronnie's younger brother who took over the vocals. I believe that their other brother was singer for 38 Special, another great band.
You are correct. In the Shinedown video that is a picture of Ronnie, circa the time he wrote this track. It is being held by his Granddaughter, who's mother, Melody Van Zant (Ronnie's Daughter), is married to Shinedown's guitarist Jasin Todd.
Shinedown 45, everything from sound of madness, Burning Bright, Fly From the Inside, Heroes, Save Me. Literally all of these are super amazing. You should honestly binge/livestream this band.
Hello, I must say I am very sorry the loss of your son... I am new to your channel and seriously love you guys. My 14 year old son is now Cancer free thank you lord to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Thank you to you both for being who who you are and being strong. :)
Hey hey thanks for the shout out guys. Glad you both enjoyed the recommendation of Simple man. This has been a highly debated topic of which version is best but for me it has to be Shinedown all day long. Brent's vocals are exceptional, so yh please go and check out more Shinedown. Somewhere in the stratosphere live DVD is a good place to start. 👍👍👍
Shinedown are a Jacksonville FL band so it makes sense for him to have been listening to LS music his whole life . Two great bands from the same city ,years apart . Listen to Shinedowns 45 ....nice starter to their catalogue
I saw them in 09. Staind, Shinedown, Chevelle and Halestorm. Sadly, I missed Halestorm. They were added at the last minute and I had never heard of them. I was late to a concert for the first and the last time ever.
@Kel-n-Rich, Skynyrd's plane ran out of fuel and crashed in the woods near McComb, Mississippi in the early evening hours of October 20, 1977. They were 3 days into their "TOTS Tour" (Ironically named Tour Of The Survivors) when it happened, having just played a gig in Greenville, South Carolina and they were on their way to Baton Rouge, Louisiana when the plane went down. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, Guitarist Steve Gaines, Long time assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and long time pilots Walter McCreary & William Gray all died on impact. Gaines's sister, back-up singer Cassie Gaines, also died, having bled to death before help could arrive with her throat cut ear to ear. 20 other band and crew members survived the crash, but many had very serious injuries. Guitarist Gary Rossington was probably the most seriously injured that survived, having had both arms & both legs broken, as well as a broken pelvis, a punctured stomach, and punctured liver. I know Don McLean sings American Pie about the day Buddy Hollie, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper were all killed in a plane crash, but October 20, 1977 was for me the "day the music died."
I first heard of Shinedown when they had a concert in my town, never heard of em but not many bands come here so I went. It was pretty good and I listen to them here and there since.
this song is wonderful, the three guitars give weight to the incredible sound, their story is full of tragedies, that all rest in peace, hug, Rogério Brasil (Brazil)
Manilla Road-Crystal Logic. Legendary underrated band from Wichita. Mark "The Shark" Shelton formed the band in the 70's and played both guitar and sang and there's a saying "If you know about Manilla Road you are a true Metalhead!" Would be great if you reacted to it especially since his one year anniversary of his passing will be on the 27th.
Okay, there are a few very good interviews re their version of Simple Man!! They have an extensive discography of music! Brent has done a ton of acoustic covers, as well as there is an entire live show acoustic of their best stuff etc. Definitely worth a dig into!! 😉
This song gets me all VERKLEMPT. I'm pretty sure I requested it on your yt community link, not knowing about your website. Anyway, Southern Rock is the best!! Thanks for posting.
I know I'm about a year late, but... Shinedown is mainly a Hard Rock band, as recognised by Brent Smiths voice. You could check them out at a fairly new consert; Live from Kansas, where Brent Smith talkes a little about the background of some of their songs. Can't recollect if he talks about Simple Man though When it comes to Shinedown Songs, I recommend: Shed Some Light Call Me- Acustic Version 45- Acustic Version I Dare You- Acustic Version Save Me- Acustic Version Some Day- Acustic Version
I'm always skeptical of remakes. However that was great! Would have made Ronnie proud. Also makes me curious of how Ronnie would have done/ evolved his performance ofthat song himself over the yrs

The pipes on that dude. . .
love the song love LYNYRD SKYNYRD The great Ronnie Van Zant one of the best singer songwriters ever R.I.P.
Their live shows are so damn good too. Brent Smith and the rest of the band are always spot on.
Thanks for pulling that tract of Shinedown it was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Both great songs!!! Brent from shinedown is one of the best frontmen of any band. Vocal range is outstanding!!!
That's Gary Rossington in the Shine version who is a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd
Ronnie Vanzant...in the photo with his granddaughter holding his photo in frame. Amen! Great tribute, none the less!
Haven't had goose bumps like that for a while.
You guys are beautiful, you seem so in love, i could feel it when the song started and Kel looked at you at the begining of the song with so much love, and a few moments later when she grabbed your hand, you brought tears to my eyes...!
i envy you...
Shinedown is amazing, especially their live shows! Def check out more of them!
Glad u guys dig alter bridge, seen them 3× last tour all in Wisconsin
I saw Shinedown a few weeks ago. I was needing with a cane & up front. At the time, Zach the guitarist gave me his wrist band, the bassist, Eric gave me a pic & the drummer Barry gave me a drum stick. Great guys!
handed me a drumstick.
# Shinedown
Did you know that both Skynyrd and Shindown came from the same place, Jacksonville Florida. When Skynyrd came back in the mid 80s to the present day, it was Ronnie's younger brother who took over the vocals. I believe that their other brother was singer for 38 Special, another great band.
Shinedown brings it to a new generation decades down the road.
I’m obsessed with their song Cut the Cord!
Awesome shirt Kel !!! 👍👍
When Shinedown started in Florida they knew the wife & she gave them permission to do the song
You are correct. In the Shinedown video that is a picture of Ronnie, circa the time he wrote this track. It is being held by his Granddaughter, who's mother, Melody Van Zant (Ronnie's Daughter), is married to Shinedown's guitarist Jasin Todd.
That Shinedown was great ,great great
Shakedown is PHENOMENAL!!!!! Listen to all their music. 45 acoustic is Wow. Listen to Shinedown call me
Shinedown 45, everything from sound of madness, Burning Bright, Fly From the Inside, Heroes, Save Me.
You just mesh into the music and relax. Love it....
Let Shinedown become your new forever band! So many #1 singles, yoiu'll be amazed how many songs I bet you know.
The crow and butterfly by shinedown is goosebump worthy ad well. Love love love it.
Kel, rich... Welcome to shinedown.
If you want more Shinedown, I've always liked "Sound of Madness" and "Her Name is Alice".
First time for Shinedown version. For an old Skynard fan I love this. A great twist on a classic
One of the best covers ever, a tribute to hometown heroes.
Shinedown's Burning Bright & Crow & the Butterfly is wonderful songs you both should hear as well. Brent Smith's Vocals are Amazing.
I first heard of Shinedown when they had a concert in my town, never heard of em but not many bands come here so I went. It was pretty good and I listen to them here and there since.
The performance that stood out during the concert was the song 45 and I bet Kel would love it. It's not a happy song though!
Like this video was posted on my birthday, and your Silent Lucidity video is now in my top ten. ACHIEVEMENT GET! Love you both!
Fly From the Inside, one of Shinedown's first songs did it for me. Fan every after.
this song is wonderful, the three guitars give weight to the incredible sound, their story is full of tragedies, that all rest in peace, hug, Rogério Brasil (Brazil)
I love Lynyrd Skynyrd. Thank you I am a simple man,
Okay, there are a few very good interviews re their version of Simple Man!! They have an extensive discography of music! Brent has done a ton of acoustic covers, as well as there is an entire live show acoustic of their best stuff etc. Definitely worth a dig into!! 😉
Yes, that was a picture of Ronnie & it was his granddaughter holding the picture. Shinedown was formed in Jacksonville
You’ve got to watch them perform this live. I saw them in concert last year and it was amazing!
This song gets me all VERKLEMPT. I'm pretty sure I requested it on your yt community link, not knowing about your website. Anyway, Southern Rock is the best!! Thanks for posting.
Thank you for the great video, have a great weekend guys!
This Shinedown dude can really sing
Brent Smith and this comment is accurate.
I know I'm about a year late, but...
Shinedown is mainly a Hard Rock band, as recognised by Brent Smiths voice.
You could check them out at a fairly new consert; Live from Kansas, where Brent Smith talkes a little about the background of some of their songs.
Can't recollect if he talks about Simple Man though
When it comes to Shinedown Songs, I recommend:
Shed Some Light
Call Me- Acustic Version
45- Acustic Version
I Dare You- Acustic Version
Save Me- Acustic Version
Some Day- Acustic Version
I love both versions of this awesome song 🎵
My favorite song of all time!
I appreciate that you called it from the get-go. "The high part's going to be intense." Great ear.
I'm always skeptical of remakes. However that was great! Would have made Ronnie proud. Also makes me curious of how Ronnie would have done/ evolved his performance ofthat song himself over the yrs
