I believe I speak on behalf of all the Opeth fans when I welcome you to the world of absolutely colorful and sensational array of compositions by ultimate masters of their crafts. The catalogue of Opeth's music has evolved so beautifully over the years that there is always something for everyone. That being said, do enjoy the rabit hole. :)
@thatmelisakelly oh there are tons Benighted Deliverance Blackwater Park Heir Apparent Cusp of Eternity Closure Black Rose Immortal Face of Melinda any one of these is a great choice for continuation of this incredible journey
I have seen Opeth twice in concert. One thing about Mr Akerfeldt's singing/growling/screaming...his face is so serene the whole time. I watched him in awe. He also a genuine gentleman. Met him at the second show and talked for a few minutes. He was so moved that his music had helped me through so much. We both shed some tears that night.
Well, that suprised me. I struggle with growls. Probably, 1. because I am very new to metal, and, 2. because I am very old. But, give me credit for trying. This, I liked. The growl seemed to fit where the song was going. I liked it enough that I will probably be exploring more Opeth. So, thank you for that, Ms. Kelly. Can't wait to see where you go next.
His pronounciation when growling is also pretty good, if you listen while reading the lyrics once you will probably understand 95% on the next listen, even without reading lyrics. I'm so used to it I can understand almost all growling in metal. It's like you get a upgrade to your ears, with a distortion and fuzz filter haha Deciphering the lyrics becomes pleasurable, adding to the complexity and layers of the song, and even more to the emotion.
There is also also a lot of Opeth tracks an full albums where there is 0 harsh vocals/growls. I personally love his growls, some of the best death metal style vocals in modern times.
Practically all Opeth songs have also clean singing parts and softer parts. Also like was said already Char above me they have albums with no growls, but also the whole style of those albums are different. I didn't used to like growls, but Opeth was the band for me that first made me them not bother me and later I learned to love them. Opeth has two songs that have only growl vocals in them.
I was a metalhead from about 13 years old, but it took until my late 30's before I started getting into growls, and even then it took a while to properly like them. What i liked about Opeth (and now Jinjer) is what you said actually... they both use them where they fit the music, not just doing harsh vocals for the sake of it. After a couple of months of listening to Opeth "growls" just felt completely natural.
Gosh, thank you all for taking the time to reply to my comment! I certatinly didn't expect that. I really appreciate your advice and encouragement. I really do intend to delve more deeply into Opeth. It sounds like this Nightwish/Marko fan has some exploring to do with a new band.
Still moves me to tears in the section where he sings,'To see a beloved son in despair'. This is the best ever written metal opera. I said it before and probably will say it again elsewhere...
The Drapery Falls will always be my favourite Opeth song. It was the first one I heard and it was so radically unlike anything I had ever heard before that I sat listening to it, letting myself drift into a sort of trance-like state. I listened to it on repeat for what might have been hours, I don't even know because it was like I wasn't even in my body. When people talk about how music can transport you, that's what it meant, I felt like I left my damn body, like I was in a waking dream. I experienced a chemically unassisted natural high. It sounds so stupid but it happened, it hit me just right like very few artists or songs ever have in my life. Sometimes you hear the exact right song at the exact right time in your life, and I spend my days looking for the next experience like that, the next sound that will take me somewhere.
The bass one that track is just so hypnotizing. One of my favorite Opeth tracks which says a lot because they have over 100 songs with 85% being really good.
I, too, had an experience like this with The Drapery Falls. It was on a Kerrang CD, I'd never heard anything like it. Some songs can demarcate your life so distinctly. Another band who've done that is Deafheaven, Worthless Animal & Glint are so fucking beautiful that I regret never knowing them.
His gutturals are not as amazing as they were during his prime at the red rock show. The Roundhouse tapes has the absolute best vocal performance he has ever given live. He simply does not care much about harsh vocals anymore, his cleans have become absolutely angelic.. but his heavy vocals suffered because of that. Still may favorite musician ever.
Mikael Åkerfeldt's growling back in the early 2000's was amazing. I think that only a few people (Peter Tägtgren from Hypocrisy) could give him a run for his money. He has such a unique tone to his growl and is able to switch to a beautiful melodic clean vocal so easily. Also yes, he does not know any music theory.
@@Revivethefallen Dan Swanö has similar growl to Mikael, not a lot of range, but they're pretty fucking amazing in the register they're growling. Peter is another case, he has one of the widest ranges, he can go as low as Alex Terrible and as high as Devin Townsend. (First growl of Killing art hell over sofia and last scream on roswell from wacken 98)
Opeth have an album called Damnation that is all clean vocals and a lot of acoustic / folksy sounds but also with a dark melancholy vibe. Ghost Reveries as an album is fantastic and every song brings you on a multi part journey. Think you’d really appreciate Baying of the Hounds.
Super excited to listen to this album. Pretty sure I’m gonna love it and do another video about it. Prepare for my channel to become only about opeth 😆
Pre the Heritage album, they were the greatest blend of brutality and beauty I've heard. I hated extreme vocals until I discovered Opeth. Took me a while to come round to the growls, but once it finally clicked for me I fell in love. Opeth and Jinjer are now my two favourite bands, and Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation is another of my favourite vocalists. More Opeth and Jinjer please Melisa! (and some Cattle Decap if you dare :D )
I do have Cattle Decapitation on my list for discoveries. Honestly with bands like Jinjer and Opeth it’s really hard not to return to them. Thank you so much for watching. I really do think Opeth’s more acoustic albums might be something that will be on my playlists for a long time 😊
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Opeth is a deep rabbit hole and there will be plenty for someone as open minded musically as you to stick on your playlist for sure. Not so sure Cattle Decap will go on your playlist but from an extreme vocals point of view it should certainly be interesting for a reaction :) I look forward to it. Keep up the good work!
@@SoulSingerDiscovers A great, probably their greatest mostly acoustic based song is To Bid You Farewell, and it's a must to check out I think. I can recommend Credence, Benighted and Face of Melinda too, all of which are from their earliest albums, from the 90s. For a unique vibe of calm, beautiful melancholy, the whole Damnation album is something you must check out. There are no growls on that one, just calm beauty, however the lyrics are heavy, so depending on what kind of definition it actually is a heavy album. Isolation Years is probably the most beautiful song, ever. Hours of Wealth is a calm sort of jazzy, bluesey, beautiful song too.
If you like singers who can switch from harsh and clean vocals at will, check out Devin Townsend, especially his Ziltoid the Omniscient, and Deconstruction albums. Still my favorite Metal vocalist ever, with Mikael Akerfeldt and Chino Moreno from Deftones coming in at 2nd and 3rd respectively. In fact, start with his performance of his song "Kingdom" for EMG TV. Absolutely monstrous and angelic vocals.
I think that Mikael Åkerfeldt is one of the best growlers out there (next being one hell of a singer). I love his clarity in his growl and his range. It feels more like singing than screaming. Thank you for reacting to Opeth. Tip : Anathema (especially the more recent albums).
It's always so nice to see someone get into Opeth. I know that they have a massive treasure trove of music to dive into. So many songs worth equal consideration. Ghost of Perdition is probably the most balanced mix of Opeth's earlier death metal sound and their later progressive rock sound. It also kind of sits right in the middle of their "prime" years. So it's definitely a good introduction, but there are other songs that will showcase Mikael's vocals, both clean and harsh, better. There will also be more brutal guitar riffs, more gorgeous acoustic instrumentals, and just some crazy shit that you cannot possibly see coming. I often recommend Harlequin Forest next, because I think it's another really good balance of Opeth's beauty and brutality...but I kind of think you should check out something where Mikael goes even harder on the growls. Blackwater Park might be the right way to go.
Yeah, to be honest, I enjoyed has growl so much but I’m definitely up for listening to stuff that’s perhaps more intense. Certainly there’s going to be a lot more of Opeth to come 😊
Heavy songs: Blackwater park, demon of the fall, heir apparent, deliverance Mixed songs: Bleak, the baying of the hounds, reverie harlequinn forest, the leper affinity, the funeral portrait, serenity painted death, godheads lament, moonlapse vertigo Soft songs: Windowpane, to bid you farewell, face of melinda, coil, to rid the disease, credence, in my time of need, weakness, burden Instrumentals: Ending credits, prologue and epilogue, patterns in the ivy 1 and 2
Now imagine having to put all that vocal technique while playing the beautiful yet intricate riffs of opeth, that's Mikael and deserves hella merit ngl
iirc it all started with the bands first gig was so horrible mikael was ashamed of being out in public so when he wanted to continue with the band, he decided to practice a lot more to not sound so shit live again
They put you in the shallow end of the Opeth pool. If you want to go deeper in the Akerfeldt growl/clean singing, Try Deliverance, Bleak (my personal favorite), Hessian Peel, Coil/Heir Apparent, The Drapery Falls, Reverie/Harlequin Forest, or try something from their softest album Damnation with songs like Window Pane. Opeth is my favorite band and you hit my soft spot this week. Btw, I love your hair, very Metal looking hair and I think I'm in love. Keep the Opeth coming!.
Lawrence don’t fall in love. I’m completely unhinged 😆 thank you for this. I’ll check these out. I’m already super excited to listen to the album damnation. Definitely more of this band to come whether people like it or not 😊 ❤️
This is Opeth from 1995 to 2010 era, which was a mix of death metal, prog metal and black metal... Opeth went in a more prog rock direction from their 2011 to 2023 era... Mikael Akerfeldt (vocals & guitar) is the only original member, and he remarked that he was "over" death metal by 2010 and wanted to express his more melodic influences... But he still performs Opeth's older songs in concert. Opeth released their first album 'Orchid' in 1995 and released 4 studio albums by 1999... their line-up solified by 1999 w/ Peter Lindgren (guitar), Martin Mendez (bass) and Martin Lopez (drums)... eventually Per Wiberg (keyboards) was added to the band. Opeth's creative triumph was the album 'Blackwater Park' in 2001, followed by the dual albums released in succession - the heavy record 'Deliverance' (2002) and mellow record 'Damnation' (2003)... the album 'Ghost Reveries' (2005) was another success, but Martin Lopez departed from Opeth, followed soon after by Peter Lindgren... 'Ghost of Perdition' was on "Ghost reveries". Opeth returned in 2008 w/ the album 'Watershed'... Martin 'Axe' Axenrot (drums) and Fredrick Akesson (guitar) joining the band... it would also mark the end of Opeth's "death metal" studio albums. Opeth delivered a much more mellower record w/ 'Heritage' in 2011... Per Wiberg was replaced by Joakim Svalberg (keyboards) afterwards. Opeth's sound continued to evolve in a more prog rock direction w/ 'Pale Communion' (2014) and 'Sorceress' (2016)... their latest album was 'In Cauda Venenum' (2019) which was recorded w/ English and Swedish lyrics. After the covid-19 pandemic, Opeth announced that drummer Martin Axenrot had been replaced by Waltteri Varynen (drums) in 2022 for the tour. For 'death metal' Opeth, I recommend the songs - 'When'... 'Heir apparent'... "Master's apprentices"... "The drapery falls"... 'The Leper Affinity'... 🤘🤘💀 And for the mellower Opeth... the songs - 'Harvest'... 'Windowpane'... 'Face of Melinda'... 'Burden'... 'I feel the dark'... 'The wilde flowers'... 🔥
Welcome to the world of Opeth, Melisa! They were one of the two bands that made me appreciate growling vocals back in the 90s. The song that started my love affair with Opeth was "Demon Of The Fall" from their 1998 album "My Arms, Your Hearse". If you decide to do another Opeth reaction, this is the song I highly recommend. Now, if you like Mikael's guttural vocals, you should definitely check out Dan Swanö. He's a Swedish producer and multi-instrumentalist. But that's going down a deep deep rabbit hole LOL! He's been in so many bands, collaborated with so many people, including Mikael in Bloodbath.... Some of his past and present bands include Edge Of Sanity, Nightingale, Pan.Thy.Monium, Odyssey, Unicorn ... I would recommend to start with his only solo album called "Moontower" (prog metal with growling vocals) and then try Edge Of Sanity "Crimson", which is a concept album with just one song exactly 40 minutes long. Have fun!
Saw these metal gods last year, they did a fans vote Setlist with one track from each of their thirteen studio albums (including the 20 minute Black Rose Immortal), epic night. They sounded just as good live as they do on recordings. Cracking reaction, more Opeth is obligatory!
Hello. I discovered your channel tonight and you are absolutely wonderful! Very refreshing to see someone speak their mind and not give a damn. Concerning Opeth, I'm so glad you liked it. You've got to do more and I suggest The Sorceress or Rain Will Fall. If possible check them live. Keep up the good work and goodnight from Ottawa, Canada.
Hey my dude! Thank you so much for watching. I am chuffed that you’re enjoying it so far. Tbh I have had to stop myself from turning the channel into an Opeth recap show 😂 but I will be returning for sure. Ill add this to my list! 😊
Very nice to see you react to Opeth! If you feel inspired and have lust to check out more of Opeth, I would recommend 'Harlequin forest' live at the Royal Albert hall in 2010.
Good review this! Always nice to hear someone discover this lovely band. Mikael is a fun lad Also, if anyone cares at all: Pronunciation of Swedish vowels/umlauts Å = kinda like "ou" in Four Ä = kinda like "ea" in Bear (this one is tricky to find a english example of) Ö = exacly like "u" in Survey Edit: Oh and yeah Jinjer has said in interviews that they take a LOT of inspiration from Opeth, so not a surprise that if you liked Jinjer you like these guys as well:) Edit 2: Recommend "Harvest" if you like the more acoustic stuff
Just rewatched this again. Would be fun to see what you think of their new stuff, his singing on the latest album is so good. His clean vocals has really evolved since this was recorded.
You chose one of the best songs by Opeth, yet there are many others just as good. Mikael doesn't growl on his newer albums anymore. Yet live, they bring the old stuff, still... He is by far the best vocalist i've seen live so many times. Never misses a note, he's funny as hell! And also: don't underestimate his friend behind the keys, coz he sings the backings so well! Great to explore different genres in your video's. I did struggle with the accent for a bit tho :p Oh and btw: i take my dad who is 73 to opeth shows... he compares them to pink floyd sometimes.
Pleasure to come across your channel via one of my favorite bands! Very much enjoyed and yes you nailed it with Mikael not being formally trained.. he’s just one of those rare musical geniuses that can create on such a different level and being free from the constraints of “conventional” musical theory and structure is a huge advantage for him! Cheers love!
When the next recommended video is you discovering Devy, all I have to say is "hi 👋 welcome to awesome! We've been here all along, glad to have you join us!" ❤
Since you love the accoustic stuff you're pretty lucky since every song of theirs as some in it, one of my favorite thing about Opeth, they truly mastered acoustics and incorporated it with death metal so well.
It's bittersweet to see so many reaction-videos giving proper credit to Opeth. When I was blessed by friends with Opeth, I was a mere 13yr old (2003), angsty, long hair, metal head who wore jeans and band t-shirts. In those naïve and early days of my life, I KNEW i was listening to a musical gem. A musical anomaly. I showed their music to others to only be brushed away along with comments like, "i don't listen to that emo stuff'." Little did they know they were listening to music that was ahead of the time.
I can’t imagine listening to this music and brushing aside, even when I hear that the first time, despite being bombarded with a lot of different new musical ideas, it’s still stuck out as one of the most interesting. What a band! Thanks for watching my dude 😊
Mikael Äkerfeldt wasn't the one who founded the band originally, he was originally brought in to play bass guitar and the other guys quit the band leaving just him and David Isberg (the original singer) back in 1990. Isberg would leave in 1992 and Mikael became the singer of Opeth. I would recommend checking out any song from the Still life to Watershed era
Honestly the best way to enjoy Opeth is really take one of their album and play it all the way through. Every song is a journey by itself but together it is usually spectacular as a full listen. I have not really delved into their latest albums as i've been busy with other bands as of late but i very much doubt they would be bad. Blackwater Park is probably my all time favourite album so far. Followed by Ghost reveries. But Deliverance and the Damnation albums is also great... It is incredibly hard to pick any particular song as a favourite. But maaaybe Blackwater park? man it is rough to choose one.
I agree; they are like Pink Floyd in that regard. Great songs, but when you hear the album straight through, uninterrupted, just absolutely mind blowing.
Probably the biggest rabbit hole to go down. My favorite band ever. If you want a good live song that has cleans and acoustics, do "In My Time of Need" live from Red Rocks. It's a gem, enjoy🤘😄
Opeth is above all expectations one could have of a band. I do recommend you hear this song live from the Red Rocks concert. Their latest albums are without the growls, but they are absolutely majestic and entrancing. Mikael's sinister and superb lyrical themes click so well in the music, and the music is just... Their whole discography is worth listening. For me, every album from Blackwater Park forth, is 10/10 and worth every second you devote to enjoying it.
@@SoulSingerDiscovers hahahaha!! Fucking hilarious! You’re the type of people I’d totally get along with. Haha. Much love to you. Keep rockin out on the reactions. I love it. Cheers to you Melisa!
Opeth plays very theatherical music, or sorta cinematic. They almost always tell a story and just keep moving forwards, not necessarily sticking to any usual verse-chorus struckture. Please do Harlequin Forest live.
They are truly my favourite so far! I can’t get enough of them. I’m recording more this week and Opeth are first on my list. The theatre in their music is something else 🥰
I forgot to comment lately, so now summarized, in short: Lots of love and please keep it up, you are such a pleasant character, I just enjoy watching you! Thank you for the good entertainment! And if that's too cheesy an ingratiation: You're welcome ;)
@@SoulSingerDiscovers I see, this is the beginning of a great love ;) I mean in a live stream you read 2 of my comments out loud, that means we're practically engaged! Don't take me too seriously! And don't worry, I live in Germany and I'm way too lazy to stalk you overseas.
@@Sebastian-vt6rg all I have ever wanted is someone who thinks I’m awesome, but is 100% too lazy to stalk me in anyway. You’re right. This is the beginning of an amazing relationship. 😂❤️
❤❤🔥Opeth🔥❤❤ I love them so much! It was so great to finally find a new channel reaction to them. I'm subscribing in hopes that there will be more soon. You'll find acoustics in just about every Opeth song... also done by Mikåel. Some Opeth suggestions: Coil/Heir Apparent Hessian Peel
You know when I first found opeth I was kind of upset that they took such a drastic change in their works after a point, until I realized that all their old metal is so damn good they probably felt finished. Then they did a more prog rock style beautifully. Definitely one of the bands that taught me it was better not to expect a certain style from a group and to let them express themselves.
Even if you dont count the first two albums they have done everything with extreme vocals pretty much. I miss the mix of clean and harsh vocals since nobody can quite match them in that regard but it makes sense moving towards clean vocals only.
One of the best concerts I have ever been to was their Blackwater Park your. Got the chance to hang out with the for about an hour after the show and they were extremely nice guys.
Every Opeth album that was released between 1999's "Still Life" and 2005's "Ghost Reveries" is a perfect 5-star Opeth album. They had by far their best lineup during these years. The vibe changed a bit starting with the follow-up to this album, 2007's Watershed, when founding 2nd guitarist Peter Lindgren quit the band, to be replaced by former Arch Enemy guitarist Fredrik Akesson, and longime drummer Martin Lopez quit and got replaced with Martin Axenrot. Two great musicians, but the dynamic definitely changed a bit. Watershed and its subsequent albums are OK, but I almost never listen to them whereas I listen to Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation, and Ghost Reveries all the time.
That right there. I miss Lopez. Any drummer that is fit for the Opeth job must be a top notch, but you everyone will be different and that difference matter
It's funny because Orchid is another one of their albums and when I looked at the video sections for the first time I was like "wait, Orchid? I thought we were only listening to Ghost Reveries on this one" xD
I've been a fan of Opeth since the 90s. They are simply one of the best bands of the last forty years. Akerfeldt really threads the needle as a songwriter. Dive in. They're amazing.
Opeth is my favorite progressive metal band crazy how much they've changed over the years, yet many albums are frozen markers along the timeline marking distinct evolutions and experimentation.
Love me some Opeth 🔥🤘😁🤘🔥 I’ve actually sampled them in Hip-Hop before lol. Favorite song of theirs is a tough pick, but I’d probably go with “Blackwater Park”. Fingers crossed we hear a Soul cover of one of their songs in the future haha 🤞😋
My dude, you don’t know how far I’m already invested in this band. It’s only been a few days! I’m going to try and consume as much of it as possible. 😊 ❤️
I saw them many times back in the day (pre deliverance album) check out some of their older stuff off of Still Life, my arms your hearse, or Blackwater Park
They've been putting out great music since short before I graduated highschool and have been playing at smaller venue's like the worcester palladium in massachusetts with a ton of fantastic bands as long as I can remember. Some of the best bands I've seen them with were Lacuna Coil, Amorphis, Nevermore, Emperor, In Flames, Borknagar, Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Children of Bodom, Gwar, Sonata Arctica, Tyr, Testament, and numerous others. I know the paladium was hosting some very talented but not very well known bands in the early 2000s, Killswitch Engage was also a good example as were bands like Iced Earth, Epica, Nightwish is also a good example.
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Seriously, tea with rum (optionally a braggot or BA RIS), a good book, preferably something dark from the romantics or modernists, and Ghost Reveries. No better thing on earth :P
Hey Melisa, If you do another of these for Opeth, it should probably be Harlequin Forest Live at the Royal Albert Hall. Mikael has changed up his growls a bit over the years, and that's very evident in this performance. A good quality video is here: th-cam.com/video/bRiKYpcD8tc/w-d-xo.html Also, for your own listening not necessarily reacting, you might be interested to know Opeth's album "Damnation" is basically all clean vocals.
So glad, you did Opeth. They're not so popular amoung reaction videos. This song is really great imo. For more acoustic stuff you should listen to the album Damnation. Other "growly" bands I recommend are: Swallow the Sun (song: Swallow Horror Pt I), Ghost Brigade (Song: clawmaster) and Beardfish (song: voluntary slavery)
Hard to choos favourite Opeth songs. Depends on mood I guess. Ghost Of Perdition, The Lepper Affinity, When, Serenity Painted Death and many, many more.
The track that got me into Opeth(and pulled me into growling) was the alun Blackwater Park, but specifically The Funeral Portrait. th-cam.com/video/KrbtnCHv-Hc/w-d-xo.html I'm quite sure the main riff is a play on something from Tubular Bells, which big props to anyone who knows that reference!(Mikael is a huge 70s prog rock fan)
thirty years later it is still widely unknown whether and if sound engineers have / might have / had a heavy take on contributing to the overall fantastic masterpieces of intricate harmonies and other diverging harmonies mastered by the indispensable Opeth band.
I think that’s a really interesting point to make. There’s definitely arguments to be made that sound engineers and producers still play quite a large part in creating a really amazing piece of art. I feel like this song is so intricate that there had to have been some more input, you know? Cool comment my dude 😊💪
@@SoulSingerDiscovers thanks ! Personnaly I hope that most ideas were theirs because they've aged so very well - your appreciation standing as proof - I hope you have had the time to listen/enjoy other pieces . Peace out !
I went to the University of Ottawa for music. I took a copy of Blackwater Park to my theory professor. His response, "WOW! Where did this band study?". "They didn't." "You're KIDDING."
Great reaction, for an acoustic track I suggest Faith in Others off the Pale Communion album. I don't think anyone has reacted to it so you would be a first and lyrically it is absolutely devastating.
Just discovered you and I'm L O V I N G your reactions!! I appreciate the vocal analysis that you give during the song (along with the demonstrations, when applicable). Would love to see more Nightwish and Epica, but I'm DYING to see you react to Falling in Reverse and Within Temptation! For FiR, I'd recommend: 1. Popular Monster 2. The Drug in Me is Reimagined 3. Voices in My Head 4. Zombified 5. I'm not a Vampire (revamped) 6. Watch the World Burn 7. Last Resort (Reimagined) But especially 5 & 6.
Most of my favorite Opeth songs are from the albums where Steven Wilson was producing, including Blackwater Park, The Drapery Falls, and Deliverance. If you want the more gentle (non-growly) side of Opeth, Burden or Windowpane might be good.
If you like their acoustic side check out their album Damnation, that's all in that style. I'd love to see you discover Deftones(Digital Bath or Minerva.) No one sings like Chino, his harmonic choices are so strange but so right, and Cult of Luna(The Wreck of SS Needle or Passing Through.) Two different sides of their sound but both really interesting.
If you love the acoustic part of this song, you should check out the Opeth album "Damnation" and the collab he did with Steven Wilson under the name Storm Corrosion
You already know that album Damnation is the mellow one 🙂 If you like it, they did a DVD Lamentations where the played two sets. Damnation first and then they went metal.

I remember when it came out. To me, that's as close to a perfect song as it gets.
“The lotus eater” is an interesting song. Also the live at red rock show is incredible.
Ill check it out 😊
His gutturals are not as amazing as they were during his prime at the red rock show. The Roundhouse tapes has the absolute best vocal performance he has ever given live. He simply does not care much about harsh vocals anymore, his cleans have become absolutely angelic.. but his heavy vocals suffered because of that. Still may favorite musician ever.
Fabulous track , Lotus Eater is one of my favourites, also Harlequin Forest
Mikael Åkerfeldt's growling back in the early 2000's was amazing.
I think that only a few people (Peter Tägtgren from Hypocrisy) could give him a run for his money.
He has such a unique tone to his growl and is able to switch to a beautiful melodic clean vocal so easily.
Also yes, he does not know any music theory.
What a man! 😊💪
Or Dan Swano
@@Revivethefallen Dan Swanö has similar growl to Mikael, not a lot of range, but they're pretty fucking amazing in the register they're growling.
Peter is another case, he has one of the widest ranges, he can go as low as Alex Terrible and as high as Devin Townsend. (First growl of Killing art hell over sofia and last scream on roswell from wacken 98)
Tomi Joutsen from Amorphis?
@@romanthegambler6966 im talking about 2000/2005.
Didn't Tomi join Amorphis in 2006?
Opeth have an album called Damnation that is all clean vocals and a lot of acoustic / folksy sounds but also with a dark melancholy vibe. Ghost Reveries as an album is fantastic and every song brings you on a multi part journey. Think you’d really appreciate Baying of the Hounds.
Super excited to listen to this album. Pretty sure I’m gonna love it and do another video about it. Prepare for my channel to become only about opeth 😆
Yeah, Damnation is a total masterpiece in every way.
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Yeah you can do the entire clean album (Damnation). You'll find tons to analyse even with no growling.
I've seen Opeth live more than once. You like his singing voice and the acoustic stuff... PLEASE!!! Watch *** Opeth - Windowpane***
"I'm a lying whore" LOL
You should definitely watch the live version, mind blowing musical perfection.
Someone in agreement with me . 👍
Anathema... never watched any reaction on them and, honestly, that really sucks. I definitely endorse this: Anathema's reaction, Melisa. Please!
Yeah that’s how I feel about it. It feels certainly a lot more melodic weirdly. Thanks Marcel I will :-)
@@davidedemurodominijanni9889 The Judgement album is a masterpiece! 🥰
Certainly there’s going to be a lot more of Opeth to come 😊
good choice, but id strongly consider the leper affinity as a perfectly rounded track
I do like Opeth, every time is a voyage of discovery..... no matter how many time I've heard a song!
There's just so much to digest!
Heavy songs: Blackwater park, demon of the fall, heir apparent, deliverance
Mixed songs: Bleak, the baying of the hounds, reverie harlequinn forest, the leper affinity, the funeral portrait, serenity painted death, godheads lament, moonlapse vertigo
Soft songs: Windowpane, to bid you farewell, face of melinda, coil, to rid the disease, credence, in my time of need, weakness, burden
Instrumentals: Ending credits, prologue and epilogue, patterns in the ivy 1 and 2
You didnt put a single song post watershed
@@Phantom-kc9ly Feel free to suggest some i listed my personal favorites
Incredible list. I would also add Soldier of Fortune to the "Soft songs." It's an incredible showcase of Mikael's clean vocals and the softer guitar.
@@PaulBlxck While we're on covers, Den Ständiga Resan. The texture of his voice is INCREDIBLE
@@mariozenarju6461 That cover is of an original by the late Marie Fredriksson of Roxette fame.
Now imagine having to put all that vocal technique while playing the beautiful yet intricate riffs of opeth, that's Mikael and deserves hella merit ngl
Dude is brilliant, and very skillful.
iirc it all started with the bands first gig was so horrible mikael was ashamed of being out in public so when he wanted to continue with the band, he decided to practice a lot more to not sound so shit live again
I totally missed out on Opeth. I woke up one day, discovered them, and realized they had a ton of albums out I missed LOL.
Same here. But I have no excuse, because I've been following Steven Wilson for a long time lol
Definitely more of this band to come whether people like it or not 😊 ❤️
Youre reactions are great, thank you :)
There is something about Swedish metal, it seems to hit another level.
So far, I would absolutely have to agree. Thank you so much for watching my dude 😊 ❤️
And for the mellower Opeth... the songs - 'Harvest'... 'Windowpane'... 'Face of Melinda'... 'Burden'... 'I feel the dark'... 'The wilde flowers'... 🔥
Thank you for this list, my dude. It’s very helpful 😊
After this first contact it’s probably already time to hear this masterpiece live. Like the version at Red Rocks. :)
I believe you are correct sir 😊
I was at that show! Devin Townsend opened and Gojira followed! Still the best concert I've ever been to!
Have fun!
Thank you so much for this Alex. I do love an in-depth list. I’ll take some of this out and report back 😊 ❤️
You cannot skip Witherscape ;)
Saw these metal gods last year, they did a fans vote Setlist with one track from each of their thirteen studio albums (including the 20 minute Black Rose Immortal), epic night. They sounded just as good live as they do on recordings. Cracking reaction, more Opeth is obligatory!
Thank you my dude. How amazing that they would do an entire set list the fan had chosen. I love them more now 😊 ❤️
As a fellow Levi, your mans knows what he talking about. Especially about music~ Much love girl, keep it up!
Opeth is top 5 all time favorites for me. you have so many directions one song will take you, its a journey every time you listen
A fair judgement from their deliverance album is my favorite opeth song.
Idk what I would do without Opeth I have such an emotional attachment to their music
Very nice to see you react to Opeth! If you feel inspired and have lust to check out more of Opeth, I would recommend 'Harlequin forest' live at the Royal Albert hall in 2010.
I will definitely check it out as this band are going to be a huge problem for me as I said 😆
Thank you, Melisa. Absolutely fantastic reaction! Live version of this performed at Red Rocks is even better IMO. Check it out.
I will do thank you so much my dude I’m so glad you enjoyed it. 😊 ❤️
Good review this! Always nice to hear someone discover this lovely band. Mikael is a fun lad
Also, if anyone cares at all: Pronunciation of Swedish vowels/umlauts
Å = kinda like "ou" in Four
Ä = kinda like "ea" in Bear (this one is tricky to find a english example of)
Ö = exacly like "u" in Survey
Edit: Oh and yeah Jinjer has said in interviews that they take a LOT of inspiration from Opeth, so not a surprise that if you liked Jinjer you like these guys as well:)
Edit 2: Recommend "Harvest" if you like the more acoustic stuff
Thank you my dude! Looking forward to discovering more of them, I can absolutely see me listening to them regularly 😊
Opeth is my absolute favorite band. My favorite song would have to be The Drapery Falls”
My fave too. They are just perfect
My gateway into Opeth was "Burden". No growls, just pure blizz throughout.
Ill check it out :)
Dude you are giving me such a good energy!!
THANK YOU! ❤️ I try my best to bring a vibe I would like in someone else 💪😊
My favourite Opeth song, . wonderfull!
We've been here all along, glad to have you join us!" ❤
Love this. and also, I love they way you say 'gray'. :)
😊 thank you! For watching and putting up with my accent 😂
I will do my dude 😊💪
I agree; they are like Pink Floyd in that regard. Great songs, but when you hear the album straight through, uninterrupted, just absolutely mind blowing.
"Forget everything your partner says, and then everything is new." Wiser words have never been said.
My favorite album from that band of crazy swedish boys.
My favorite Opeth songs are Windowpane, Drapery Falls, and literally everything on the Blackwater Park album, especially the track Blackwater Park.
That entire album is fantastic! Top 10 of all metal albums ever in my book.
Saw these guys at The Palace (may it rest in peace) in Melbourne Australia
Just awesome 😍
So jealous! Can’t imagine how amazing it must have been 😊
fun fact Mikael Åkerfeldt is one if not the most important role model for Tatjana
Her growls sometimes remind me of Mikael's growls on Deliverance/Resurrection through carnage.
I can see that.
Probably the biggest rabbit hole to go down. My favorite band ever.
If you want a good live song that has cleans and acoustics, do "In My Time of Need" live from Red Rocks. It's a gem, enjoy🤘😄
I’ll check it out. Thanks my dude 😊
I’ll check out that live performance thank you my dude 😊
Do some recent Opeth. I would suggest Lovelorn Crime from their latest album.

"Bleak" from blackwater park would be great for your next reaction. It has a lot of acoustic guitar but is still in Opeth's typical death metal style.

@@Jablan11 the first two albums felt kinda awkward but still pretty damn good compared to most metal debuts

Deliverance by Opeth is absolutely crushing!!
Alan! This is exactly the kind of description I am looking for in a song 😊💪
I'm sure I'm not the only one to suggest that you check out the live at Red Rocks version of this. You're welcome.
I've been a fan of Opeth since the 90s. They are simply one of the best bands of the last forty years. Akerfeldt really threads the needle as a songwriter. Dive in. They're amazing.
He’s a genius 😎
I'm sure someone else will also say to check their Live at Red Rocks concert.
Fav Opeth song is the 20 min long Black Rose Immortal, which I believe is their Magnus Opus. There's no such thing as "too long" Opeth song 😅
An Absolutely Splendid Discovery Indeed...

This whole album is really made for rainy autumn evenings.
What a wonderfully cosy comment! 😊
A good quality video is here: th-cam.com/video/bRiKYpcD8tc/w-d-xo.html
Also, for your own listening not necessarily reacting, you might be interested to know Opeth's album "Damnation" is basically all clean vocals.

As is everything on their last four albums with clean vocals exclusively 😁
Demon of the fall I would say has the most brutal vocals of any opeth song. I strongly recommend it.
I do not have any of these thank you my dude! 😊
Hard to choos favourite Opeth songs. Depends on mood I guess. Ghost Of Perdition, The Lepper Affinity, When, Serenity Painted Death and many, many more.
that part at 8:00, my god, that's the most beautiful riff, vocal melody, AND harmony of all time....

15:58 u must try their live stuff, his voice is definitely a treasure
Still to get into more live stuff but soon for sure 😊
thirty years later it is still widely unknown whether and if sound engineers have / might have / had a heavy take on contributing to the overall fantastic masterpieces of intricate harmonies and other diverging harmonies mastered by the indispensable Opeth band.
I think that’s a really interesting point to make. There’s definitely arguments to be made that sound engineers and producers still play quite a large part in creating a really amazing piece of art. I feel like this song is so intricate that there had to have been some more input, you know? Cool comment my dude 😊💪

Fun fact that will blow your mind: Mikael Åkerfeldt knows nothing about music theory. But he writes music as if he has a mastery of it.
I went to the University of Ottawa for music. I took a copy of Blackwater Park to my theory professor. His response, "WOW! Where did this band study?". "They didn't."
"You're KIDDING."
Great reaction, for an acoustic track I suggest Faith in Others off the Pale Communion album. I don't think anyone has reacted to it so you would be a first and lyrically it is absolutely devastating.

One does not simply name a single favorite Opeth song. (sean_bean.jpg)
But Opeth - Face of Melinda is obligatory! :>
Ill check it out! 😊
If you love the acoustic part of this song, you should check out the Opeth album "Damnation" and the collab he did with Steven Wilson under the name Storm Corrosion
I have Damnation next for my listening I’m willing to believe I’m gonna love it 😊
If you want to hear more acoustic listen to the Damnation record, it’s all acoustic songs.
You should listen to Patterns In The Ivy 1&2, Burden and To Bid You Farewell. They're all beautiful songs that you will love ❤️.
I will! Thank you for the recommendation my dude 😊
You already know that album Damnation is the mellow one 🙂
If you like it, they did a DVD Lamentations where the played two sets. Damnation first and then they went metal.
I will go and look that up! Sounds glorious :)
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Lamantations is Opeth at it’s best. Enjoy
