God damn Opeth's basslines are good. I honestly never paid them any mind as they can be real far back in the mix at times but once I started learning them they drove me up a wall.
@@reneniclasen353 Right?! My favorite bass parts are those that are complicated without making the whole song too busy, while also being distinct from the guitar. His are very much that.
I couldn't imagine you wouldn't enjoy this, but seeing you move around and your facial expressions throughout the song was so satisfying. So, my recommendation for their first song was Harlequin Forest at the Royal Albert Hall. You will get a little glimpse of Mikael's humor and he starts the song with clean vocals, which might have made the growls more surprising. I still think that should be your next stop. However, you have no idea how many great songs are waiting for you. Ask 10 Opeth fans their favorite song and you'll get 30 answers. You're also right about their musicianship - the live and studio performances sound very similar. However, there are songs that I definitely think your should hear the studio version of first. But we'll get to those. Harlequin Forest first.
Opeth really is this clean live, no jumping around the stage, just calmly kicking you in the head with the music. They go from brutal to heartachingly beautiful, often within the same song.
Just for some context: Mikael (the lead singer) has a bit of a different sound live nowadays when he does the death growls (including this concert performance) compared to the sound he had on their album recordings. You really ought to check out some of the older studio material to hear his death growl in its prime. The thing is, the way he did that original growl wasn't sustainable over time, especially considering how much touring Opeth tends to do. So he swapped to this newer style which is obviously much better on his vocal cords and enables him to, like, keep singing into his older age. With all that said, their newer albums have left the death metal stuff almost totally behind and it's morphed into more of a smoother progressive rock sound devoid of most all screams. Mikael's voice is just wonderful and their newest material really shows that. Enjoy!!
Just said the same on a comment just now (the intensity of his voice in-studio and tours during the more Death Metal era of the band). Thank you for pointing that out to Aileen :).
Another great band that heavily inspired Opeth is Porcupine Tree. Their live performance of Anesthetize is unreal. They have one of the greatest drummers ever and their vocal harmonies are insane even though it’s only 2 people.
Up up up you go! Not to mention Steven Wilson, the frontman of Porcupine Tree, has produced Opeth albums and even has a side project with Mikael called Storm Corrosion.
Steven Wilson and Mikael are both so talented. I was introduced to Steve in when I bought the Laminations DVD and watched the making of. That was such a good making of doco.
Gavin Harrison on drums for Porcupine Tree is truly a master. He has literally written the book (2, actually) on playing in different time signatures at the same time. 2 hands, 2 feet, 4 time signatures.
Porcupine Tree's drummer played on a project with Arjen Lucassen (composer of Ayreon and Star One) called Guilt Machine, album titled "On This Perfect Day". It's a fantastic prog rock/metal album everyone should hear.
Ghost reveries is a great place to start! Then I’d recommend Blackwater park if you want a more darker sound or still life for a little more old school version of their proggyness. Or if you want less death metal vocals but like the prog, ICV album.

The thing is they have so vast discography, 13 albums, and they are not afraid to incorporate different influences in their music. They even have album with no heavy riffs or extended fast tempos, 'Damnation', or 'Heritage' which is more progressive rock than progressive death metal... and last four albums Mikael, the singer, does not growl anymore. OMG yes. Next up needs to be the song Blackwater Park! That whole album (also titled Blackwater Park) is, in my opinion, a perfect album. Front to back, flawless.
Oh man I'm so happy you discovered Opeth. Do yourself a favor and go watch this same song played on The Roundhouse Tapes because Mikael was even more aggressive with his range because he focused a lot more on screaming back then. He's mellowed out his screaming because the band has transitioned into a pure prog non screaming sound. This song is the very first song on what I believe to be their absolute best album, Ghost Reveries, one of like 5 albums I've given a perfect 10/10. The song sounds like it could be an entire album on its own because it captivates you from beginning to end. Absolutely love it!
Opeth is probably the best band I’ve seen live at matching their studio sound. Plenty of other bands get very close or maybe change some things to add energy or whatever which I love as well, but for as close to a studio sound as you can get Opeth is the one.
That "chill" performance is total focus. It's like doing something you love and getting lost in it, no longer sensing time. Perfect presence. So practiced it looks easy. Of the Gods, truly. Thank you!
Well, I'd say its probably more that they have to concentrate what they are doing---being that they don't use clicks (one of the few modern acts that doesn't) they have to listen to what the other members are doing to not screw up the timing during heavy syncopation parts.
Thank you for being like one of like... two people I've seen that actually picked up on Joakim Svalberg's backing vocals. They're top notch! I've been a fan of Opeth since My Arms, Your Hearse came out in 1998 and a friend recommended it to me. I hated the harsh vocals at first, but grew to love them. Saw them live in 2004, absolutely amazing. Opeth and Testament are like the two bands that got me into harsh vocals right at the turn of the century. Now it's in about 75% of what I lsiten to haha
Opeth is mind blowing...people probably should have requested the studio versions for the first introduction, though. This is a decent quality live video, especially for open air, but without hearing the production and arrangements on the album, you aren't getting the full effect. Listen to the studio versions to really "get it".
I did not read all 150+ comments, so someone may have mentioned… this is one of Tatiana’s and Eugene’s (from Jinjer) biggest influences. I know you enjoy Jinjer as well, so thought you’d like that fact.
One of the greatest bands in the history of music, no matter the genre. Recommendations: *Deliverance* (studio or live from the Lamentations DVD) - The outro section of that song is truly something else, especially if you enjoy rhythm. Apart from that, I will skip the usual suspects, because other people will recommend them en masse. Instead I'll recommend a few songs most reactors never get to. *Advent* (probably studio; don't know if there are any decent live recordings of this) - from their second and, in my opinion, still strongest album Morningrise *To Bid you Farewell* (same deal; probably studio) - Also Morningrise, and one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded *By the Pain I See in Others* (I think there is a decent live version of it on youtube, though they rarely play it during shows) - off the Deliverance album *When* (studio version recommended; they played it live, but I think they shortened it) - also an older song off the My Arms Your Hearse album. The final section of this song left me absolutely speechless, when I first discovered them at the tender age of 15.
Let's also keep in mind this is done at SIX THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED feet above sea level. I could barely breathe properly when I went up there for a show years ago, and Mikael's doing this. It's actually unreal.
I’m so happy you got to Opeth. Glad you had fun. Strong recommendation for Blackwater Park (live), from The Roundhouse Tapes. Studio version is amazing too (of course).
I started with Ghost Reveries, picking up the CD in a shop on a whim. Subsequently bought Blackwater Park, then got Damnation, Deliverance, and Watershed. Damn, but they've got a discography to make other bands weep
Opeth has a massive library of phenomenal music. Mikael is a beast of a singer, writer, and conductor of music and story telling. You should definitely check out their albums.
I was at this concert in May, 2017. I remember it was cold because Opeth headlined (after Devin Townsend and Gojira) and we didn’t dress warm enough. Other people we were with left, but I refused to leave until Opeth played my favorite song of theirs, Deliverance. My wife was a trooper and agreed to stay as long as I wanted. Of course, Opeth’s last song was Deliverance, but I’m thankful we stayed for the entire show because that 2017 Red Rocks show is one of the most legendary and referenced concerts on TH-cam. The idea my wife and I were there when it was happening is surreal. Thank God we stayed! With that being said, check out Deliverance from the Lamentations performance with Martin Lopez on drums (Martin Axenrot was the drummer in this video).
Opeth has remained one of my top bands together with Tool for probably 20 years. Every time you hear a song again with those two bands you discover new sounds, meanings or feelings. I would recommend to hear their opus maxima "Blackwater Park" next. You'll like it, then we can pass on to their jazzy/soul ballads from the Damnation album.
They're on tour right now in North America, I saw them at their first stop in Laval (city next to Montréal). Touring with Khemmis & Mastodon. Was an amazing show, definitely recommend it if they come near you!
Literally BRAND new to your channel, but I love the heart rate monitor, such a cool feature, really shows that you're invested and interesting in what you're watching. This is an absolute Rollercoaster of a track 🤙🏾
I wish I could go back to 2005 when I was 16 and relive the magic of hearing this for the first time again, this was my first Opeth song aswell and it was just magical
Thank you so much for such a brilliant reaction to one of my favourite bands Opeth are just superb. There are so many brilliant tracks to check out. .. I noticed Porcelain Heart has been mentioned... brilliant track. A couple of tracks to check are ...The Moor, and Reverie/Harlequin Forest. Now you have entered the Opeth worm hole you won't be disappointed 👍 Looking forward to your next reaction. Peace and love from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
I get goosebumps everytime I hear this song. This is a perfect performance in every way, just awesome musicians, a great variety of sounds and influences. It's my Opeth favorite song since I heard this recording.
Opeth - I highly recommend this live performance of Harlequin Forest at Royal Albert Hall (PLEASE) th-cam.com/video/0HRett4kOpM/w-d-xo.html Also studio version Coil/Heir Apparent (they go together). They're from Sweden, a great band and masters of transitions. The 'current band' members - Mikael Åkerfeldt/vocals, lyricist, lead guitar, composer and overall master of everything he does. Fredrik Åkesson also lead guitar Martin Mendez - bass Drums - Martin Axenrot (left the band recently) Joakim Svalberg- keyboards/mellotron Also Mikael Åkerfeldt has done the music for 'Clark' which will be on Netflix May 5th. Most likely will not be Opeth style though.
Found you because you started listening to TOOL, just left your Judith reaction from A Perfect Circle, and now, I see you listened to Opeth, one of my other all time favorite bands!
Absolutely amazing performance!!! Opeth is definitely one of those bands that are considered mind-blowing!!! I am so happy you got to react to them. Mikael has always had a great balance between his growls and his clean vocals. I definitely recommend Deliverance and Baying of the Hounds to react to next. I love your reactions Aileen. Always so sweet and lovely!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love that song, and loved that you listened to it with a big, beautiful smile on your face! You could listen to a lot of their songs: they know how to be calm and melodic like in "Harvest" or "Windowpane", or similar to this in songs like "Deliverance" and "Harlequin forest"
Nice to hear a knowledgable and thoughtful analysis of a great song ... not easy to get on a first hearing ... well done ... lovely to spend time with you x
Opeth has really always had such impressive orchestration and song writing. So many great tracks. Every album is unique, and honestly, they’re all great in their own way.
This video has made me think of a few more suggestions. In terms of more Open, either Windowpane or In My Time of Need are essential listening imo. For more technical and effortless coolness, Ne Obliviscaris are a must listen band, Intra Venus is my song recommendation for an introduction to the band.
I was going to recommend this very song today. What are the odds :) Opeth (pressure is on the "O", not the "Pe" ;)) are truly legends despite having gone through a few member changes. Nobody sounds like they do. The list of incredible Opeth songs you could dive into next is long, but I highly recommend "Harlequin Forest". It's from the same album as "Ghost of Perdition".
I knew you would love Opeth! Swedish Metal is the real deal you know. Hehe. Looking forward to see more reactions! TH-cam tried to hide this one from me but finally found it. You love drums. Let me give you Norwegian drummer Baard Kolstad, unless you know already. He plays in the avant garde-ish band Leprous and is eeirdly good. Therr is a drummer cam video of him playing drums for the song ”The Sky Is Red” in a studio. You will love it. Cheers! Stay Metal! 🤘😎🤘
I am always curious to see if people think the same as I do about songs and bands. I remember buying this album when it came out and playing it nonstop for months. Friends would catch it in certain parts and say oh this is so nice, and then hear the growl. Each song is like 4 songs in 1.
I as an Opeth fan thank for your reaction to this incredibly awesome band: one of the best and heaviest growls with a lot pf energy please check out Demon of the fall at roundhouse tapes. Fantastic
Almost every single Opeth line of music is a beautiful gift for the listener. The higher the listener's skill, the greater the appreciation for said gift.
That's the beauty of Opeth they will absolutely blow you out of the water every damn time. Check out April Ethereal, Blackwater Park, Dirge for November, Porcelain Heart, or To bid you Farewell. All great Opeth songs
One of the best opeth reactions I have heard for a very long time! Subscribed! Opeth and Tool are my two favourites! Please react to the Drapery Falls next!
Opeth couldn't come more highly recommended. Class act and in a league of their own. You'll probably enjoy some Ne Obliviscaris too, try "And Plauge Flowers the Kaleidoscope..." live from their show in Colorado.
14:05 funny you should mention that. Opeth - Garden of the Titans is this exact concert, recorded live at Red Rocks Amphitheater. And, yes, the whole concert sounds amazing for such a challenging venue
Opeth is God Tier when it comes to musicianship. One of my favourite bands from the very first time I listened to them 10 years ago, up to today, even after I have heard tons of new good music.
Leper Affinity is a nice song from them, Harlequin Forest as well... To be honest, all of their stuff is great and I've been listening to them for nearly 20 years. Seen em live a few times as well, they always deliver.
Hey old dude here (38) was interested to see what happened with an Opeth first experience. Lol, glad to see its the same (essentially) experience I got from hearing Blackwater Park when I first heard it in 2002. Good breakdown, keep it \m/
If you really want to here a good example of his clean vocals, check out Harvest from the Lamentations album/DVD. His vocals on that performance are magical
love seeing another creator watching and discovering Opeth for the 1st time. Top 3 bands of all time, right along side Amon Amarth and DevilDriver. Be warned, YOU WILL get lost in Opeth when you go down the rabbit hole lol Enjoy! ...... also they are even cleaner on the albums which is saying something, Check out "harlequin Forest" or "Bleak" just as good just as powerful, they really tell a story in the albums though thats the best part of their music, MAYBE take a dive into reacting to an entire album in order lol
Gotta be the cleanest performance I’ve ever seen. With that clean and clear guitar tone it sounds amazing but any mistakes stick out pretty bad and there were ZERO. what a time to absolutely nail it too, filming at Red Rocks 🔥🔥🔥
More Opeth would be amazing. Their my all-time favorite band. "Demon of the Fall," "When," "The Moor", "Bleak," "Lotus Eater," and definitely "The Drapery Falls" are just a few that I'd recommend.
I understand how you feel but don’t beat yourself up. You’ve found them now. Enjoy the ride. What I wouldn’t give to experience my Opeth journey for the first time. A modern mold of the greats like Zeppelin, Purple, and Sabbath. And I don’t say this lightly.
Fun fact 1: The evening was so chilly they could not take their jackets off. Fun fact 2: Lighting is not automated, they are manually operated. Next songs to consider: Deliverance Harlequin Forest (go for the live versions) Or consider something else with exceptional vocals, like Leprous. Songs to check out: Slave (Live from Rockefeller) Aquired taste (Live from Rockefeller) Nighttime Disguise (fans voted online for what the song should include during their recording session of the album Aphelion) Any of these songs will make you astonished and impressed by both the vocals and the bands 😊
I love the whole album this song is from "Ghost Reveries". I'd say that this is my second favorite form this album. My favorite is "The Grand Conjuration". Even if you don't react to it, which I hope you will, you got to check it out.
The drummer from this studio album went on to form SOEN - a band well worth checking out. Martin Lopez is considered by many to have been in the band when they were at their peak. Blackwater park and Ghost Reveries are the two records should concentrate on first. 👍
They are signed to the same management company as the following bands who you really should check out too. You won’t be disappointed. Devin Townsend Katatonia Paradise Lost Soilwork used to be on the same one too.
Opeth is SICK. A band with so much depth, and so much variation. Btw I get your ''down with the sickness vibe'' of the drum, this kinda has the same 'battle-drums'' in some parts. Recommend this whole album; the follow up to this song, Baying of the Hounds, IS INSANE. I can not listen to Ghost of Perdition without listening to Baying of the Hounds, which quickly turns into the whole album. Harlequin Forest is also an extremely good one. But personally I wanna see your reaction to Opeth's Sorceress. It's a whole different song than this one, but in a way just as epic and just as cool. On a side note, I'd also love to see you continue your Devin Townsend journey. You've done two, but he's got way more to blow you away with :) The Funeral/Bastard/Death of Music trilogy live from Royal Albert Hall would be my recommendation. Tho it's a long trip; you will love it for sure!
This is my favourite Opeth song. I love the melodic interludes in contrast to the heavy. Regarding the recording, all such shows are recorded one a line level and mixed for a release like this. Normally one records a stereo track of the room to give the ambience of the kive show.
Opeth are definitely an experience listening to them. A band I would suggest as a non-metal metalband would be Heilung. They reach into our primal minds and plant stories. Makes you feel like a warrior from 1000 years ago, whether you have that heritage or not. Really worth looking into if you haven't already, Krigsgaldr is a good one other reactors look at and one of my favorites
Your face when the keyboards first started coming in! HIGHLY recommend finding a good version of Opeth's Demon of the Fall! The album version is a piece of metal genius but there are some stunning live and acoustic renditions too.
Cheers Aileen!!... How's it going ? That was prettty moving! And that Demonic Energy... Fuck Yeah true that !!! Another incredible band!! A bit of almost everything in that song.. I like it!! Like they're not even trying !! Top reaction!! 🤘🎵🇭🇲💯♥️ From NSW cessnock Australia 🤘🇭🇷🎶

It's great to see you experience a wonderful band like this for the first time and its cool to see how it reminded you of other things that you love. I’m so happy you got to Opeth. Glad you had fun.
Strong recommendation for Blackwater Park (live), from The Roundhouse Tapes.
Studio version is amazing too (of course).
First time I heard Opeth... I just knew they would become my favorite band. Love at first listen. ♥️
Opeth is one of my all time favorite bands. I’d definitely check out: “The Drapery Falls”.
Opeth is just the best band on the planet. Best album to start with: Watershed. No more need to say.....
chefs kiss
i think i d say still life first
@@sleep20well agreed
I've been listening to Hessian Peel for weeks now
I started with Ghost Reveries, picking up the CD in a shop on a whim.
I have a whole Opeth playlist I relax/fall asleep to, like 30 songs without growling (I like those too ofc)
What a legend song. Loved your reaction/review. Especially your reaction to double harmonic vocals were so good
Harlequin Forest at Royal Albert Hall, my favorite live Opeth performance.
Great reaction to Opeth. After I got fully into opeth around 2013-2014.
I only listened to Opeth for like for 3 months straight hahaha
Opeth - I highly recommend this live performance of Harlequin Forest at Royal Albert Hall (PLEASE) th-cam.com/video/0HRett4kOpM/w-d-xo.html
Also studio version Coil/Heir Apparent (they go together).
They're from Sweden, a great band and masters of transitions. The 'current band' members -
Mikael Åkerfeldt/vocals, lyricist, lead guitar, composer and overall master of everything he does.
Fredrik Åkesson also lead guitar
Martin Mendez - bass
Drums - Martin Axenrot (left the band recently)
Joakim Svalberg- keyboards/mellotron
Also Mikael Åkerfeldt has done the music for 'Clark' which will be on Netflix May 5th. Most likely will not be Opeth style though.
"Sorceress" from the same gig is just brilliant!
At last! I've been waiting for this for "ages"! They recorded the whole Red Rocks concert, it's kind of my favorite live concert with them!
This is a prog metal anthem, just saw them in New Orleans blew me away how good they are.
This video has made me think of a few more suggestions.
In terms of more Open, either Windowpane or In My Time of Need are essential listening imo.
For more technical and effortless coolness, Ne Obliviscaris are a must listen band, Intra Venus is my song recommendation for an introduction to the band.
Don't they ALL brother!!!
First Tool, now Opeth? Damn I'm glad I found this channel.
I as an Opeth fan thank for your reaction to this incredibly awesome band: one of the best and heaviest growls with a lot pf energy please check out
Demon of the fall at roundhouse tapes.
Great observations and analysis of multiple aspects of the song and performance.
Opeth is God Tier when it comes to musicianship. One of my favourite bands from the very first time I listened to them 10 years ago, up to today, even after I have heard tons of new good music.
Opeths musicianship sets the bar high.. live they sound perfect.
Leper Affinity is a nice song from them, Harlequin Forest as well... To be honest, all of their stuff is great and I've been listening to them for nearly 20 years. Seen em live a few times as well, they always deliver.
The Grand Conjuration is a great track to check out! Very heavy on the clean vocals and amazing musicianship
It's fair to say The Grand Conjuration is heavy on clean vocals and utterly crushing on the harsh vocals 😄
From the first time I ever heard this like 15 years ago, until this day, I believe the riff at 10:40 is THE most badass riff ever.
Thank you Aileen! This was fantastic reaction to a amazing performance.
Hey old dude here (38) was interested to see what happened with an Opeth first experience. Lol, glad to see its the same (essentially) experience I got from hearing Blackwater Park when I first heard it in 2002. Good breakdown, keep it \m/
Opeth, even with their harsh vocals, is just one of the best music to sleep to! It's so soothing!
Why do i always get emotional watching reactions to this song. Maybe great music is overwhelming.. Brilliant reaction
Just found your channel and you got a new subscriber. Awesome reactions and breakdowns!!
This song was probably in my top 5 most played in high school. My band nerd friends and I werd obsessed with this album.
To be this tight for more than 10 minutes, impressive. They take us along for a musical and visual journey. Great stuff!!
Every song I've heard from Opeth is awesome.🤟
Gotta be the cleanest performance I’ve ever seen. With that clean and clear guitar tone it sounds amazing but any mistakes stick out pretty bad and there were ZERO. what a time to absolutely nail it too, filming at Red Rocks 🔥🔥🔥
I absolutely love the heart rate on the right
More Opeth would be amazing.
If you liked this, you'll definitely dig Ne Obliviscaris. Check out And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope (Live in Colorado 2016)
Fun fact 1: The evening was so chilly they could not take their jackets off.
Fun fact 2: Lighting is not automated, they are manually operated.
Next songs to consider:
Deliverance
Harlequin Forest
(go for the live versions)
Or consider something else with exceptional vocals, like Leprous.
Songs to check out:
Slave (Live from Rockefeller)
Aquired taste (Live from Rockefeller)
Nighttime Disguise (fans voted online for what the song should include during their recording session of the album Aphelion)
Any of these songs will make you astonished and impressed by both the vocals and the bands 😊
I love the whole album this song is from "Ghost Reveries". I'd say that this is my second favorite form this album. My favorite is "The Grand Conjuration". Even if you don't react to it, which I hope you will, you got to check it out.
🤘I'm looking forward to this one.
Devin Townsend
Katatonia
Paradise Lost
Soilwork used to be on the same one too.
Normally one records a stereo track of the room to give the ambience of the kive show.
hope you react other music of them - Deliverance (Live at Shepherd's Bush Empire, London) this music in this live is just mesmerizing
Lamentations is just the top of Opeth and as we can hear from this recording, it will never be surpassed.
@@Jashtvorak Roundhouse is very good too, especially its version of Perdition.
Just saw them last night in Montreal- great show!
oh my g, im in love with your reaction
Loved your reaction! Sirius Black? You're right! Why didn't I think of that. Thanks again and keep up the great work.
As I have seen in some other comments Harlequin Forest is something you should check out. My favorite Opeth song though is Hours Of Wealth which I can only describe as breathtakingly beautiful.
I highly recommend the song “Deliverance” OMFG is it gooooood
First time seeing your channel, great vid! You have a nice aura and likeable personality. It's great to see you experience a wonderful band like this for the first time and its cool to see how it reminded you of other things that you love. The little heartbeat counter on the side of the video is neat too. While we're here we may as well make a suggestion.. check out Septicflesh - Anubis (official live video) Infernus Sinfonica MMXIXAnubis. Keep that head bangin!
Yes, you finally did it 😜 opeth is such a great Band and i love them. I saw them 6 times live so far and they are one of these special Bands which sound live even better 🤟 please do more of them and if you like Mikael's "death metal side" please try his side-project "Bloodbath"...this guy is so awesome. The gig from Wacken 2005 is amazing to watch 😊
Try Ne Obliviscaris for another phenomenal progressive death metal group. You'll be blown away. Dealers choice. Doesn't matter what you pick its great just like Opeths library are all fantastic.
Opeth live performances sound better than the original recordings (imo), this band is just so talented and all the staff working with them equally so. Also, the lighting director that works for opeth synced the lights with the performance, and very accurately at that. Just major talent all around with these guys, it's my dream to see them live.
