I first discovered Opeth when Blackwater Park came out. They were the band that taught me that death metal growls were worth digging into. I've had the pleasure of seeing them 3 times live, and they never fail to deliver a stunning performance. For a long time several years ago I used to listen to Harlequin Forest as a way to wind down before bed. Highly recommend that song. A live version preferably because it's one thing to hear what a band can do in the studio with all the time in the world, and quite another to see them pull it off on stage. 🤘🤘

Opeth is in my top 3 favorite bands of all time. The band is tight and consistent live (seen live twice) with an incredible presence, both live and from the album. Powerful prog metal growls to sultry yet meaningful and powerful slow progressive rock melodies. The change ups are a mystery and its a roller coaster ride every time you listen but its always as good as the last but more importantly i think is the music gets better the more you listen, allowing for more notice of the nuances and subtleties. amazing musicians cant say enough about the entire band

Oh, I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but this is a shorter version of the song than the original album version, by 3 minutes. Certain parts are allowed to breathe a bit in the album version. Guess their label thought it was too long for a video, or something.

Melisa, being an Opeth worshipper for decades it is nice to see younger people recognize the genius that is Opeth across their catalog. And it is great that you are doing reactions to their music, but for your own personal enjoyment as a fan, you should get yourself a copy (yeah I know, who does optical any more) of their video disc "In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall" which has two complete sets, the first of which they the entire Blackwater Park masterpiece album live for the first time for its anniverssary, then a complete set of catalog picks up to 2010. This is one for the true fans of this outstanding band.

It's so great to see that familiar smile after listening to Opeth song :) Smile that says - I got way more than I asked for.. I've discovered them rather late in my life but they grew very fast on me to be my favorite band, followed by Tool, Rishloo (yes check them sometimes), Haken, Leprous... So much good music, but only 24 hours in a day! Opeth has vast discography, lots of different albums - from acoustic to jazzy or 70's rock influences, so it is bit hard to make a suggestion for next Opeth song. Maybe 'Deliverance' with it's sick outro? Or mellow acoustic 'Windowpane'?

Burden is my favourite track on that album. The whole thing is a jam really, but Burden, that just sets you back. Beautifully melancholic lyrics accompanied by an incredible keys solo, not to mention the guitar solo at the end. This was the song that I mistakenly thought was on Heritage as it was lighter and more Prog than death. But I fell in love with the whole album regardless.

I see this journey into metal is pretty new (for your channel at least). So far you have been picking some great stuff to react to and many of the most popular metal react songs are popular for a reason tbh.
    I suggest checking out:
Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars (live in sonicpump studio). You will love the complexity of the songs and the multiple scores and changes every song goes through by them.
Rivers of Nihil - The Void From Which No Sound Escapes. This is probably the peak of performance from these guys in my opinion and it encapsulates the drama a musician (as well as he himself on a different level) goes through sharing so much of themselves with the world.
Ne Obliviscarus - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidescope (the live version). This song is literally studied in major music schools worldwide as an example of compositional mastery.

Seen Opeth live three times. One of the most memorable live music experiences I ever had was watching them do The Grand Conjuration in the front row of a small-ish club in Dallas. The atmosphere was so palpable if I was a religious person I would've felt like I was watching an actual demonic summoning. Also got a taste of Mikhael's humor as he told the story that they felt at home in the club (called 'The Trees") because they originally considered themselves "forest metal." LOL

@@SoulSingerDiscovers I basically came here to the comments to say something similar as @rahilpurkait2832 , but not just from this similarity of genres point of view, but also because you Melisa mentioned small details that someone had to decide upon... This album was made in the Opeth era when Michael was doing the production and it is still very good. But intresting enough, his good friend Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree is one of the best prog producents of younger generations (as well as singer, guitar player and a songwriter ). Few albums later, on album Heritage, Michel wasn't satisfied with his own production, and hired Wilson to do it and you can notice the difference. On the other hand, Steven Wilson after taking break from Porcupine Tree, started doing his own albums and few were very similar in style to what he was helping Opeth achieve. Oddly enough, he changed his style lately, but not the sound of Opeth, so last few Opeth albums are almost like new ''old'' Steven Wilson albums.

Opeth is-read: was-an eclectic mix of prog, death metal, and Swedish folk music. It’s interesting that Mikael’s voice is more of an instrument than an actual singing voice. No song displays that better than Harlequin Forest, which is my personal favorite. After this record, they went in a prog-only direction, abandoning the death metal elements. While they’re still good, the singularity in their sound is now conspicuous by its absence. Their discography through Watershed, however, is as good as any band out there.

If I'm honest I kind of bounced off this album: the new drummer and the new guitarist were both very different to their predecessors, and I just didn't gel with it. Glad I've given it a few more goes more recently though cos there's definitely good stuff there.
That said, I actually saw them on this tour. I didn't plan to initially, I decided that seeing them nine times was enough, I didn't really need a tenth. But when my then-partner said she wanted to go that changed things! Really glad I went, firstly because it was great to see them packing out a venue that was about five times the size of where I'd first seen them, and secondly because Arch Enemy were also on the bill, and they were also on the bill one of the first times I'd been to see Opeth! Brought things almost full circle for me. Arch Enemy are also a really cool band, was really glad to see them. I don't listen to them that much, but they're phenomenal live, and Angela was an absolute force of nature both times I saw them.

I have a surprising number of thoughts about this track. This might have been the first Opeth song I listened to. I remember Opeth being a band I'd seen in TH-cam comments as I got into metal, and Porcelain Heart was a song title I'd seen. So I listened to this, thought it was cool because of that haunting riff that comes in around 7:40, and then listened to more Opeth and thought "wow, Porcelain Heart barely gives you any idea what they're like".
Now, that doesn't mean this song isn't unique. That riff I mentioned, those crazy drum parts, and the story behind the song all give it something special. I just think this is still a "surface level" Opeth song, if you know what I mean. Also, this is a shortened version for a music video that really doesn't do the lyrics justice, IMO. I think the studio version flows better and lets some of the sections sink in more. The ending is definitely stronger.
Anyway, I know there's plenty of more stuff to check out, but if you come back to Opeth soon...Harlequin Forest or Blackwater Park.

    • @eccer

This my dude, same! back in 2008 I heard this song for the first time. And it really is just surface level :-O
I am glad I caught the band at the death metal height years, as I became a massive fan all the way to 2011 I had consumed so much of their back catalogue.
I love Opeth still tho, but there is also some slight disappointment when they release new records now a days......but man, they still release amazing craft. I always end up loving their newest ones in the end ❤

To address the question about the back catalog:
Orchid and Morningrise are them trying to find their niche within the overall death metal landscape. My Arms... Your Hearse was a dabble in songs that are a more typical length, but the album as a whole is very cohesive. Still Life and the fan-favorite Blackwater Park were the real refinement of their early sound. Deliverance/Damnation was kind of a dual album that was an experiment in separating the heavy and clean sides of their music. Not that Deliverance didn't have lighter moments. There are some great tunes in there, but in retrospect, it was a little weird to attempt. The album that came after, however, is still my favorite. The last one of the classic lineup and, to me, it feels like the culmination of all these experiments and exploration: Ghost Reveries. Just a classic from beginning to end.
As others have mentioned, there was a lineup change for Watershed, and Michael started to shift how he wrote music. By Heritage, all the growls were gone and his closeted love for '70s prog rock was in full bloom. Heritage is my least favorite album of theirs, largely because I felt like the stylistic shift was too abrupt, and much of the wonderful aspects of Opeth's music that you point out in this video were lost. The albums since (Pale Communion, Sorceress, In Cauda Venenum) have reintroduced some of that feeling of each song being a beautiful journey while not bringing back the growls. Pale Communion and Sorceress, in particular, have grown on me over the years.

Hey Melisa! Wonderful channel you've got going! Opeth is one of my all time favourites. Seen them live 8-9 times and Michael is one of my biggest influences as a metal vocalist. My guess is that you already know, but what you reacted to in this video is the "radio edit" of the song and they've cut out about three minutes of the song. Highly recommend that you listen to the album version!
The band has gone through three major shifts musically, with the latest one happening with the release of 'Heritage' in 2011 and they are now playing progressive hard rock more than anything else. No more harsh vocals, but still excellent song writing! As you undoubtedly will return to this awesome band, please consider reacting to 'Demon of the Fall' from 1998 for his more brutal death growls, or 'Heir Apparent' from 2008 for brutal vocals, killer production and a general epic song. But, honestly, you could pretty much listen to anything of theirs and it would be an eye opener. No matter if it would be their older or newer stuff, ballads or death growls. Keep it up!
    Cheers from Sweden
