@@NerdSoup You slaughtered Max von Sydow's name for quite awhile, and I got over it. It's okay. Intent is all. You love my boy, I love you. But Aaron, it's Ballrog, not Ballrag...

34:10 When i read the books the parts with the orcs were one of the most interesting parts of the book. Seeing the other side is great and they are always interesting to see what they will do. Pippin tricks an orc into freeing him by talking like Gollum, the mutiny in cirth ungol over who would get Frodo belongings, and the uruk hai march at the beginning with there conversation and why they are doing it.
Monkey, I am SO glad you brought up the ent diving in the water to put out the flame. So funny. Even years later someone would randomly say an LOTR line he'd be like "remember the ent diving in the water! Hahabohohohohhehe" ....yea man....I remember
Favorite books/movies of all time. I had a stupid grin on my face while watching this, hearing the excitement in your voices! Great video, can't wait for the return of the king
Few minutes in brodogs. ts not a Balrag, that would be a cloth you wash your balls with. It's a Balrog, ROG not RAG. Bit later ya'll describe Haldir as a new character despite him being the lead elf the fellowship meets in Lothlorien, the only one with speaking lines outside of Celeborn and Galadriel. So when we see Haldir again, more warm and helpful to the Fellowship than our initial meeting, it is a audience reward if not a canon book fact.
I think it’s more a case of Legolas not really having much to do than Bloom being bad. If all your role is saying one line a scene and shooting a bow and arrow for the rest there isn’t much acting you can do
Legalos is my favorite character in Lotr. The fact that he went solo away from the safety and comforts of the Elves, he’s the best archer in all the lands and he looks awesome make him badass in my book.. Regardless of however many lines he had
Idk where I heard this but the filmmakers do a great job of showing a lot of aerial shots of helms deep to show the layout so even in the chaos of the battle you know where everything is. Sometimes battles in buildings can be kind of disorienting in a bad way
It is very complex. It's not just each character has a role to play. They play off each other. They are a lot of character archs (some more in depth than other). And the book opens them up even more. It is so well done that those who only see what's on the surface still like it but looking beyond the surface is a whole new world.
the line Sam says "By rights, we shouldn't even be here" actually has a hidden dual meaning: in the book, Frodo and Sam never actually go to Osgiliath. They added it as a side quest to the movie. So it's true that they actually shouldn't be there as per canon.
I know this is days old and perhaps some mentioned this, but the difference with the *Gollum* performance in this film versus later mocap (as I understand it) the animators actually created *Gollum's* every expression. Like someone would in an animated film. Not necessarily pulling data from dots on *Andy's* face, as they do today.
... then why the hell did Andy have dots on his face?? While it is true that mocap has gotten much, much better at mapping human faces onto inhuman CGI models over time, Serkis shouldn't be excluded for being the actor that pioneered this technique. Gollum is a mix between mocap and "original" CGI. They also used mixed techniques for filming him, with Andy being present on set and filming multiple interactions with and without Andy so that the animators knew how to place Gollum in the shot. They had Andy in full mocap gear for the solo-Gollum shots (like close-ups of his face), but didn't have the technique/technology to integrate motion capture on set with the other actors. Ffs Weta Workshop, with Andy Serkis, were basically inventing motion capture film-making. They pioneered many of the techniques that have become industry standard. The fact that Gollum still holds up as believable is nothing short of a goddamn miracle!
@@trequor I didn't say this definitely. I _"as I understand it."_ It's what I learned from a BTS documentary. Here's corroborating info from a separate source.¹ ┓ The facial animation system built brought _much of_ *Andy Serkis’* outstanding performance into the *Gollum* character. But these were still early days yet. _The system Raitt and his team wound up developing leverages a technique Raitt terms “combination sculpting,” which implemented 964 control points on the model of _*_Gollum’s_*_ face, allowing Raitt and his team very detailed control of _*_Gollum’s_*_ facial movements. The _*_Gollum_*_ head model consisted of just over 2,600 polygons, mostly quads. Raitt also created tools that exposed 64 control points to animation artists, who then animated _*_Gollum_*_ into the film’s scenes. _*_Unlike some other facial animation systems, such as the one used in Shrek, Raitt and his team did not use a musculoskeletal animation system to create Gollum’s expressions, but instead created many of them by hand.²_* •••●●●••• *¹ ─ Source:* www.extremetech.com/gaming/55934-the-making-of-gollum *²* ─ I was simply making reference to this fact.

In fairness, Legolas is a pretty reserved elf isn't he? Maybe Orlando Bloom wasn't supposed to be super emotive in this? Which, thinking about it, also in fairness, is the perfect role for Orlando Bloom xD hahaha.
It indeed is, although Legolas basically is the token to show us how most elves are. The whole point is that the age of the elves is fading, hence the elf takes more of a background role in the fellowship, Gimli having more in common with the rest (mortality, closer in age) and also being the token dwarf takes more spotlight. I think the actually did a good job portraying Legolas as only taking Gandalf and Aragorn seriously in fellowship.
13 minutes in--I agree the scenery and the ppl tracking across the landscape is great but ... are y'al going to mention the music? Goosebumps Everytime!
Orlando Bloom is the perfect Legolas... dude is just the most conventionally attractive man out there which really makes him believable as an elf, and he barely has any lines anyway.

Two Towers is my favorite LoTR movie. Stakes are raised from Fellowship, but not as over the top as Return. It's the only movie I've ever watched 3 times in the theater. It's also mega quotable.
Thanks Nerd Soup. Despite the Ents, this is the most grounded film. Has a real medieval feel to it. The Battle of Helms Deep is still epic. I still stand my ground in saying that the theatricals are better. Especially the Two Towers theatrical edition.
Anyone who says LOTR is not as complex as GoT hasn't done their reading. The lore and languages and history of these stories are incredible. There is a ton in the appendices and The Simarillion that paint the broader landscape.
im almost positive this was the last movie i watched on vhs. i was blackout drunk, but kinda sobered up because i had to rewind the 3hr movie. that was a week ago. come to realize, i think i was flipping through a medieval themed coloring book.
"a lot of people criticized LOTR for not being complex when Game of Thrones got really popular"- thank you, because I am always trying to convince people that LOTR is definitely not the traditional fantasy series that they probably have in mind. heck, the hero of the story is a peaceful hobbit who fails at his task, and essentially chooses to die at the end because he knows he will never really feel at home again after everything he's been through. there's a lot of ways in which LOTR is not as traditional and predictable as most people think
GOT imo is more complex and detailed with its many plotlines, but everyone can write around in circles/into corners and adding new stuff over and over. The actual art is to still actually get to an ending, a balance between complexity and closure, something the show did badly and GRRM apparently struggles with, while Tolkien did a marvellous job which Jackson carefully translated, dropping certain elements (Bombadil, Druedain) to produce a cohesive, streamlined, narrative without oversimplifying it. As long as ASOIAF isn't finished, there isn't even a need to compare.
Wait, Beau doesn’t know that the family that shows up in the middle of the space battle in the Family Guy Star Wars special was the Griswalds from National Lampoons Vacation??!! They were referencing the scene in which they get lost in a neighborhood in St. Louis on their way to Wally World.
In case the nerd soup is interested in Middle Earth backgroud without having to do Middle Earth research... Tolkien wrote what essential is an entire religion and tells how life came to be on Middle Earth. The Hobbit and Lord of the rings are stories that take place within the history of middle earth. Long story short there are 2 main continents discussed, Aman (Valinor) and Middle Earth. The "Angels" (Valar) that were in "Heaven" Left heaven and eventually settled in Valinor. The "Lucifer" character (Melkor) also left heaven and was always at war with the Valar. After a time at least 5 spirits (Maiar) were sent from Valinor to Middle Earth to assist its inhabitants in defense of Sauran (Melkor's top Lieutenant). At that point Middle Earth was populated with man, elves, dwarves, hobbits, etc. The Maiar that were sent to Middle Earth took the form of old men intentionally to weaken them as to not be able to win the battle for Middle Earth outright for the inhabitants of Middle Earth. Gandalf was one of these Maiar, along with Saruman and Radagast. Gandalf roamed Middle Earth for approximately 2000 years leading up to the events of The Lord of the rings books. Therefore when Gandalf the grey died and came back as Gandalf the white It was just his form he took in Middle Earth that died. He came back as the same Maiar spirit but this time with slightly greater power to assist in fighting Saruman.
Gandalf is immortal. He is a Maiar and was brought back by the Valar and used his original body/vessel rather than taking control of Sarumon as he was the original white wizard.
Thank you for this. Thank you for the Revisited Cut. Thank you for The Last of Us Review. Please... If you could review The Last of Us Part II when you can. Take your time though, I'm close to the end of my playthrough and I got it day one. Taking it slow and savoring it lol this is the best game I've played in like 4-5 years!
The thing is they were at their lowest at the start of this movie, the whole movie was too build a stronger coalition, whereas frodo's arc is at their "lowest" although his story really never gets better
Nobody: Nerd Soup: Gandalf fights the bull-rag I'm always curious why there is this subsection of the population (seems like mostly Americans) that just can't repeat what they've heard. Like they can't pronounce words the way they heard them. It's really bizarre... like it's one thing to have read the books and been pronouncing the names differently in one's own mind for years, but it's quite another to watch a movie for the first time and fail the pronunciation of EVERY. SINGLE. NEW. WORD!
I would be very interested to know how you felt about the books. There are subtle differences, and yet some that are pretty big IMO. And some kind of took me almost 20 years to get over. If you are into audiobooks, you can either go with the official version, which is somebody reading it to you, like the *Bob Inglis* version, which I listened to for years, until recently. Now there is an unofficial but amazing *unabridged* _Theatrical Audiobook_ of *Lord of the Rings* read by *Phil Dragash.* Amazing voice work, and *Howard Shore* music. th-cam.com/play/PLpanH1YqxZ4C_R_BT-2NeSI74UBvEo62Z.html You can listen to it on TH-cam, or try and find a download for it - which I think is in the description of one of the videos. And *Bluefax* does a good unabridged version of *The Hobbit* with _Howard Shore's_ music and great voice work. th-cam.com/play/PLHuqOGq8HdsKf6OcP-cCD6_mOODvMf0aT.html I wonder if you'll really like the books, because *Gimli's* goofiness is what bothers me most in the film's. Or at least it did for a good number of years. There's an element to *Faramir* that is missing. I'm not sure it could even be translated properly from book to film. When the film's came out, I appreciated their beauty right from the start. They looked just as I imagined things for the most part. Especially everywhere you looked, the production design was spot-on. I interpreted *Gimli's* understanding of _Moria_ differently. In the film it seems like he's _oblivious_ to what happened until he gets there. But I thought in the books he actually is just as concerned as *Gandalf,* but he wants to know for sure what happened to *Balin.*
Most readers favor 1 or 3 but for me this one has it all, I love that the heroic moments are earned and the end fills me with hope for a better world theirs and ours. Young me left the theater with a bright smile because good is worth fighting for. Thanks for the content 👏👏👏 and please, do read to become even more invested in the characters journeys and to cry more, tho not all tears are an evil...
The problem with LOTR is that there is no real sense of danger... After The Two Towers, I was never worried about the main Characters. For sure it´s really entertaining but you have 5 heroes fighting 100 enemies and they just cut through all of them. This is what GOT did better.
@@luisrey7608 of all of these the only one not being in danger was legolas. Gimli dropped onto a bunch of Uruks at Helms deep and got dropped by one of them which was scary and Aragon getting stomped by that Big armored troll when Sauron had the upper hand at that moment. Plus we've already seen Gandalf and Boromir die beforehand. GoT likes to kill their characters but in a children's book it's unnecessary.
What’s taters, precious?! Also Frodo absolutely fluffed the landing...he completely gave himself to the ring, and it’s dumb luck the ring was destroyed...personally, I think that was a weird choice to end it...the writing should have been, he should have consciously done something to defeat the hold it had....coz he sure took the credit for destroying it....

The thing is they were at their lowest at the start of this movie, the whole movie was too build a stronger coalition, whereas frodo's arc is at their "lowest" although his story really never gets better
Gandalf fighting the ballrag? What movie did you watch? :D
Ballrag used scrotum whip.
@@Arandurion you shall not TAINT this place!
Orlando Bloom was born to play legolas no other actor could fit into that roll
Did you guys do the theatrical or extended? Sounds like maybe theatrical. Just curious! Thanks!
Nobody:
Nerd Soup: Gandalf fights the bull-rag
I'm always curious why there is this subsection of the population (seems like mostly Americans) that just can't repeat what they've heard. Like they can't pronounce words the way they heard them. It's really bizarre... like it's one thing to have read the books and been pronouncing the names differently in one's own mind for years, but it's quite another to watch a movie for the first time and fail the pronunciation of EVERY. SINGLE. NEW. WORD!
Good stuff boys
Lmao @29.80 Aaron is just trying to talk about the movie and Bo Keeps interrupting to talk about how much he doesn’t like Orlando bloom.
High fantasy? As opposed to low fantasy?
Two Towers is the best one. Fight me. You'll end up like Saruman's army.
Without a doubt. "Return of the King" gets all the accolades, but Two Towers is the anchor & most ingeniously executed.
Space is canon low key slays me
Ah yes when Gandalf fought the...Ball-rag
I LOVE NERD SOUP
I agree Wormtongue should not have been let off the hook. Even in modern times he wouldn't have made it out
Why we start with 2 towers instead of fellowship?
They did fellowship bro
Thank god Karl Urban’s character was able to find a place to get his eyebrows waxed in Middle Earth.
Aaron said Gandalf fought a ballrag? Hahah
''What can men do against such reckless hate?''
Wait when was Fellowship?
I wonder how it would've gone down if Sam was the ring bearer and frodo was the help.

You can listen to it on TH-cam, or try and find a download for it - which I think is in the description of one of the videos.
And *Bluefax* does a good unabridged version of *The Hobbit* with _Howard Shore's_ music and great voice work.

I wonder if you'll really like the books, because *Gimli's* goofiness is what bothers me most in the film's.
I love Nerd Soup but guys out of all the pictures you could ha r used you used the wallpaper of Return of the King 😂😂
Aaron! It’s Sméagol not SHmeagol!! Sorry I’m such a huge LOTR fan
Aaron king of Gundor 🙄😁
That thumbnail tho!!!
Now I really want to watch Ork soccer🙂
1:30 #adblock
Kinda sad you didn’t mention Éowyn
Those are wolves they're riding. Or rather, Wargs.
Oh HELL yeah...
I don't like how Aaron pronounces Sméagol like he's Cardi B
I really love you guys. I don't love your pronunciation of some of the character's names though.
Legolas is the biggest actor in this movie? Pirates hadn't come out and i think you forgot about christopher lee and ian mckellen
The problem with LOTR is that there is no real sense of danger... After The Two Towers, I was never worried about the main Characters. For sure it´s really entertaining but you have 5 heroes fighting 100 enemies and they just cut through all of them. This is what GOT did better.
Frodo and Sam were about to die until they got saved at the last second. What are you talking about of course there was danger
@@Cremlindor I think you know what I mean... (Aragon, Legolas, Gimly...)
Hello Two Towers my old friend
