Having the breakdown sectioned by reading through excerpts from the book and cross referencing the films is absolutely perfect! This whole video is an absolute joy! Can't wait for the next ones for books 2&3!!
Huge thank you for checking out the video. This is now the longest solo one I’ve done for the channel and a massive thank you to our editors Steesh, Jon, Kobik, Laurence, Cade and Griffin for all their hard work. I think they had to edit down about 6 hours of me rambling but they absolutely killed it.
Amazing video! One point is when you said that Galadriel’s hair was used to create the Silmarils, this actually wasn’t the case. She refused Feänor even a single strand of her hair, sensing a darkness in him. It makes her giving Gimli 3 strands of her hair all the more powerful
Ha, I vividly remember sitting in the theater when the Fellowship ended, there were some people sitting in front of me who were pissed that the movie just ended like that. I guess they didn't know it was part of a trilogy lol
My 13 year old son finally agreed to watch the trilogy with me. We're starting in about 20 mins and I'm so excited I feel like the biggest goober in the world. 😂❤
Awe I hope he likes it! My daughter is the same age and has seen all of LotR and The Hobbit. She's homeschooled and just finished reading The Hobbit, now we are moving on to the first LotR book. It's so neat being able to share this magic with our kids. I remember watching The Fellowship of the Ring in the movie theater with my Dad when I was 13 too. We still share a love for LotR.🥰
One detail I like (not sure if you weren't aware or if you were planning on bringing it up in a later video): In the Battle of Mount Doom, you called out the elves were gold compared to the dark colours of Sauron's army. Their armour is mostly in golds and greens, symbolzing spring/summer. Magic is plentiful, the elves are at their peak. It's hard to tell when the elves reappear in the Battle of Helm's Deep, 'cause night time, but it's more obvious in RotK: elven armour in the "present" of the films is shown to be in more rust and copper tones. Magic is dying, the elves are diminishing. The Age of Man approaches, and the elves are leaving. It is symbolically their Autumn. (Also represented in Rivendell, as you mentioned -- it's not just the season of autumn in the world, it's where the elves are in their millennia-long life cycle.) If you image search for "lord of the rings elf 2nd age armour" vs. "3rd age armour" you can see the differences more clearly.
I'm supposed to be working, but instead I'm sitting here with my coffee watching a 2 hour Fellowship breakddown from start to finish...and I regret nothing!
Have I read and watched lord of the rings hundreds of times ? Yes Am I still going to watch this? absolutely!! Hope you’ll break down Rings of Power Szn 2!!!
Man its been a true honor watching this channel grow and Paul too, hes still the same guy but hes just gotten so much better refined as a content maker/analyzer. One of the besr breaksdowns ever. Awesome work as always
Absolute banger of a breakdown brother!! These movies are one of the rare perfect films. To make on a whole 12-13 hours of absolutely perfect films is still amazing to me. Love the extended editions and have owned them for close to two decades. Thank you dude and can’t wait for your two towers video
I don’t agree with all of Tolkien’s worldviews, but it’s so refreshing to revisit a story that actually praises clear heroism and has morally good main characters. The books and the movies will always be timeless because the theme that you should fight to protect what you love will always ring true. GRRM needs to stop fighting against this very idea if he ever hopes to finish ASOIAF. Great video man keep up the good work it’s clear that you’re actually a big fan and writing these scripts yourself.
The cheap tricks He refers to are his fireworks. By making his actual being more imposing he reminds Bilbo there is more to him than displays of visual pleasure. But I get where ya come from lol
He wasn't conjuring a trick. He was "uncloaking himself", revealing himself to Bilbo. So he's really saying "I'm not some cheap magician, here look, I am Maia of incredible wisdom and horrible power".
I have watched these films countless times and will continue to watch them for many more years to come, but dude, THIS IS EPIC! Keep it up. The back and forth from source material to the adaptation is really interesting, and I think you're the only one who does it. So keep it up. I'm looking forward to more of these long ass videos!!!!
Paul… great job. Still loving this channel years after finding you (There were a fewer of us then). If you’ve not had your fill of LOTR, I’d recommend the BBC Radio dramatisation which you reference Sir Ian Holme being in as Frodo. It’s how I got into LOTR as my dad used to listen to it in the car and it is still one of my fondest memories of my childhood, listening to it with him on long journeys.
Great video! A thing you didn't expound upon fully is what Gandalf says to the Balrog. He calls himself the, "servant of the sacred fire" which is referring to Eru Ilúvatar and the flame imperishable that creates all life in Middle Earth.
My dude, the sheer level of effort thats gone into this is beyond the pale. I am not even a big fan of Lord of the Rings but some how i just watched a 2 hr video about it, excellent work mate!
This is the type of evergreen content that will contribute to making your channel a truly legendary slice of TH-cam history, alongside all of your excellent videos. Nothing else quite like it, great work. Can’t believe I haven’t subbed til now, big oversight. Don’t stop doing your thing!
What's interesting is the Tolkien Scholar (John Sierra) said Sauron's original Quenya name Mairon, which means “The Admirable” or “Admirable One” can also be translated as "Precious"! If so, this makes the Ring seem even more sinister when all the other characters call it "My Precious".
Wow, I generally enjoy your breakdowns but this one was truly spectacular. Great job man. You have my like, and my subscribe LOL One does not simply walk into a Lord of the rings breakdown but you definitely did
Your progression from your movie analysis to these essays is great. This is really high quality stuff and this series is great to watch. Thanks for the content my dude!
This movie always holds a special place in my heart. I was in NYC for 9/11 and the New York premiere was also an event you could attend for the recovery efforts. So I got some tickets for me and my family and almost all the cast was there (No Viggo or Ian) It is one of my top moments in my life and seeing something I loved brought to the screen with a theater full of passionate fans and it is the #1 experience I ever had watching a movie. This will always hold a special place in my heart. I loved watching this (had to do it over a few days though you madman) and I thank you for the hard work you put into this. Looking forward to the next two.
Absolutely loved this video, easy to watch in chapters around IRL commitments, clearly well researched and thought out and informative but also with the usual Paul humour/charm. Can't wait for the Two Towers vid !
Slight correction concerning the rings of power. The elven rings were not uncontrollable by the one, as the one could hold dominance over all the rings of power, chiefly as it was still made with the same process Sauron as Annatar taught Celebrimbor. However he had no hand in their making so they were not corruptible, however, when Sauron made the one and put it on, they felt his presence and will, and took theirs off to avoid his control. They only out them back on after his defeat at the battle of Dagorlad.
Dude this video was amazing and now I’m thinking the 1st movie is the best I’m so close to finishing the 1wt book and really cool to see all the Easter eggs that weren’t obvious in the movie giving nod. Smashed it!!!
I almost never comment on videos, (other people seem to do a great job of taking that job), but seriously great work. You can see the actual and genuine love for the work. Awesome job.
I like the subtle detail throughout the films that Legolas has a crazy heavy and powerful bow. In Moria, his arrows are reaching the orcs, hitting, going through and sinking into stone while the orc arrows are fired in a big arc for distance and barely making it, many falling short at that distance. As the films continue his arrows will pierce multiple orcs, Uruk armor, the Olyphant skull… etc. Dude is basically packing the fantasy equivalent of a .50cal while everyone else is packing 9mm and .45s… hahaha It’s just another cool detail that makes elves feel even more OP once you notice it. I remember a friend saying he thinks it’s dumb how skilled and OP elves are and I explained that they live forever and have centuries to perfect every skill they want to! Look at the crazy things humans do in our short lives, the archery trick shots like shooting multiple aspirin tablets out of the air, ricocheting arrows off water to hit a hidden target… etc. imagine one of those people practicing for another several decades! Then that same person practices parkour for a few decades, then they practice swordsmanship… etc. once you look at it that way, the elves actually seem underpowered. Legolas should be an unstoppable walking arrow machine gun, a terminator with pointy ears, the elves should be so perfectly skilled that they seem to defy logic and common sense by being perfectly precise, accurate and fast to a degree that seems physically impossible. I’d say Legolas is a pretty reasonable level of skill and I think he might even be considered a mid ass slacker by elf standards… “He what? He.. I don’t understand.. the arrow didn’t hit the target? I’m unfamiliar with this concept. Were you mistaken in his target and you just thought he was aiming at that particular Orc and he instead wanted to hit that bush for some reason? I don’t get it.. why do you keep saying he ‘missed’?! That’s not something elves do. That’s something elvish toddlers do. After the first 50,000 hours or so, the concept of not hitting your target just doesn’t even seem possible. I think you’re lying.” Lmao just flabbergasted ass elves who have never seen an adult elf not do something perfectly. The concept of tripping and falling down is as alien to them as being able to just fly like Superman to us… it’s just a bizarre fairy tale. So in my headcanon, Legolas is mid as hell, a mediocre himbo who has the skill equivalent of nerd with a nerf bow shooting Red Bull cans in his backyard while he smokes weed and hangs out with the local “wizard” and his “hobbit” buddies. Hahaha
I have watched other LOTR breakdowns, and I particularly am enjoying how you are showing us the book to film adaptation. I read them not that long ago, and could see some of it in the moment. So well done!
Superb! I am a massive LOTR fan, and this is what we've been waiting for. So much work has gone into the research of this video. Podcast next?? Especially with 2 hour shows....
I know Andy Serkis has just released a new audio version of the book, but if you wanted to release a version, I would 100% listen to this! Great video as always
42:40 It is a reference to tobacco, or a derivative likeness, and the books even describe how the Hobbits cultivate it and introduce it to Middle Earth at large through trade. They call it weed, just like they call Athilas a "weed," because it does not have a vegetable pourpose. Plus, Tolkien often smoked a tobacco pipe, like many in his day.
This video is brilliant! Appreciate the effort you put it. Currently reading the fellowship and making comparisons myself. Shocking how many lines are taken straight from the works. Looking forward to the next one. 😊
This movie is the ultimate fantasy movie... it is so incredibly well-made. It has no equal. Also the trilogy is the last of it's kind - with that I'm talking about the way almost everything is done the old way in camera. There's surprisingly little CGI in the trilogy and Fellowship has the least amount of CGI of the three movies. The best movie of the trilogy and the best of it's kind overall. Nice job with this breakdown... I'm sure it could have been twice the lenght and there would still be stuff to cover, but the most important stuff is here.
I feel like Im ahead of the curve with this channel. I fell in love with it BEFORE the covered my favorite movies. These long form breakdowns give me something to watch as nothing is grabbing my attention nowadays
I made a Gandalf costume from scratch while working at the Movie theatre opening night, the managers wouldn’t give me the night off since it was sold out, but they saved me a seat in the final showing and let me get off early to go watch it. Core memory created. Epic breakdown, thanks for the awesome work.
I want to know how much of the book you have memorized! You look at the camera more than you look down to read from the pages! Awesome! Great video, dude! I cant wait for the other two!
In BTS at Amon Hen, Sean Austin (Sam) wades out to the boat only to get a massive shard of glass straight through his foot. When it happened he just stood still in the water without making a sound. Badass.
Mate i love this, im exactly one hour in and i am completely mesmerised. I haven't been lucky enough to read the books so I've never known how they differ. Thank you
1:35:08 this point (no pun intended) is also demonstrated in the tomb scene as Legolas shoots cleanly through the hole in the door. Aragorn makes the same shot but it rattles through. Love that
It’s interesting how Ian Holmes played both ash from alien and bilbo, both characters have an ulterior motive hidden behind a harmless figure. And then once their disguise is found out they are willing to defend what they consider their most important thing even if it risks the life’s of others
1:44:53 Man, love your videos, but saying that Galadriel’s hairs were used to create the Silmarils is wrong in so many ways; yes, they act as an olive branch between elves and dwarves, but c’mon, the Silmarils were crafted by an elf before the First Age, all the way across the sea, and they had within them the light of the two trees. I know that, in the book, Galadriel’s hair is described to have the glow of the two trees, but the connection ends there 😅. Other than that, the video was great, as always.
Feanor the builder of the silmarils was inspired to create them from galadriels hair, and asked her 3 times for a strand symbolizing the 3 she gave to gimbli(if i remember right its been a long time)
Feanor asked for Galadriels hair to help make the silmarils because it reminded him of the trees, but she turned him down because she knew he was in way over his head. He had to make do with making the silmarils without it. And based on what I seem to have read, although Galadriel's hair is incredibly stunning, the Silmarils were none the worse off for not having it. And even if the hair made the silmarils more precious, that would almost certainly have been a bad thing nonetheless.
Thanks so much for this. Tolkien is my fav all time fandom. And love that the two juxtaposition scenes of Degal and Sméagol where a foundation of this channel ☺️🧝♂️
I was watching older Heavy Spoilers classic movie breakdowns, and they are great, but I really love the energy you bring to it now. Also, I've said it before, but it's good to actually see you! Keep up the great work!

Thank you for all the joy you bring me.

42:40 It is a reference to tobacco, or a derivative likeness, and the books even describe how the Hobbits cultivate it and introduce it to Middle Earth at large through trade. They call it weed, just like they call Athilas a "weed," because it does not have a vegetable pourpose. Plus, Tolkien often smoked a tobacco pipe, like many in his day.
this was a fun revisit of one of the best stories in all media.

I knew this one was coming so I rewatched to enjoy your breakdown more 🙂↕️
So I saw this upload, decided I needed to rewatch it first, and now I'm back ❤
This was great, seriously. Thanks for this. Would watch the others if you did them!
An absolutely fantastic video and critique of the first film. Please complete the other two if you get time. 😊
Job well done. Incredible work Paul, Love the passion and attention to detail. Look forward to the Two Towers!
I hope more people watch these. I love these long 2 hr videos!
That was an awesome video, every time I've watched one of yours this month I then watch the film. Silence of lambs last night. Keep them.coming!
Thank you
Thank you 🙏
I absolutely adore these breakdowns! Looking forwards to the rest of the trilogy.
Incredible video, well done, can tell the amount of work you've done and you've done it justice
1:35:08 this point (no pun intended) is also demonstrated in the tomb scene as Legolas shoots cleanly through the hole in the door. Aragorn makes the same shot but it rattles through. Love that
Thank you, Paul, you’re a bloody legend!
Excellent Paul! That was great!
Thank you
Great work Ryan Arie
This couldn't have come at a more perfect time!!! I just finished rewatching the extended trilogy. I'll be waiting on your next breakdown!!!!!
Amazing video..... Best LOTR breakdown I've ever seen! nCan't wait for the next two. Keep up the great work x
What an amazing break down. I love the switching between the book and movie
Thank you, yeah the camera kinda forces you to perform stuff but I really enjoy it
@@heavyspoilers it's been very enjoyable, and a great way for us to feel like we are engaging more with you! Seriously, love your stuff!
Two hours, wow! Well done Paul. This is awesome.
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen, like on any subject, period. Paul Spoilers you the man!
Now drop The Two Towers and The Return of the King breakdowns pronto😂!
I love your passion for actual printed books. I spend a fortune on beautifully bound volumes.
same lol, legit annoyed me this morning that Folio Society dont have a black friday sale on, I was hoping to clean up
Excellent video mate...keep up the dramatic reading
Thank you
Great breakdown. Thank you for your time.
Fantastic video, cant wait for you to cover the next two films. Thanks for you're amazing work!
