    Outstanding video!! Was like watching Nat Geo on location. Would be great to see you do an episode for TV. Thanks for fueling my new passion and the fantastic tips and your experiences that have contributed to my recent and early success in this sport. Best wishes for continued success, interest and enthusiasm for promoting these fish as a managed game species!

      I’m always on the quest to improve a little bit each trip and with each edit, and I love being able to help others learn and develop their own passion for getting out into nature and on the water.

      Northern Snakehead, unlike most species, have two spawning periods each year. That period is determined by water temperature, but roughly speaking, their spawns are from Late May to Mid-June, and Mid-August to Mid September. Thanks for watching!

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Many, but best if you ask specific questions you have and checkout my seminar series on TH-cam 👍
      General pointers though:
      (1) slow down your presentation (a lot of guys work lures way too fast when they’re first targeting Snakehead
      (2) focus on outgoing and low tides (outgoing for increased feeding activity, low tide for pulling the sneks out of deep cover)
      (3) chatterbaits, in-line spinners, weedless swimbaits, and small topwater hollow bodies
      (4) try to find those areas which are less pressured than others (the sneks there are less “educated”)
      (5) focus on 6:30 AM - 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM - sunset. My experience and the science indicates these are usually the heaviest feeding periods.

    What state do you fish where it’s ok to release them ?? Here in pa they say you must destroy them ?? I completely disagree there here now and not going anywhere so it truly is a amazing game fish

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m here in MD. The reality is that fisheries managers and governmental organizations like to word their websites to make people think they’re required to kill them, but in reality, the law states that they can be released - BUT ONLY into the waters in which you caught them.
      Once they’re in your cooler or on a stringer, they must be killed.
      Here’s a longer answer though:
      Legal requirements on Snakehead vary by state, but in most cases, you’re allowed to release them immediately after catching them back into the waters in which you caught them. That’s the case in MD, DE, and VA (this was in MD).
      It’s usually only illegal to possess live snakehead or to transport live snakehead (which makes good sense in my opinion).
      I often harvest them, but it usually depends on whether or not I have room in the freezer or know someone who wants them.
      They’re the best tasting fish in freshwater and have an excellent meat to body ratio. They’re also easy to filet, so if I need meat or know someone who does, I’ll often keep them.
      With that said, I’ll release them if I don’t have a need to harvest. Many people take an issue with this because they’re labeled as an invasive species, and most fisheries managers do highly encourage their harvest.
      The peer-reviewed and published science thus far has not shown invasive impact. I’ve actually done an interview series with John Odenkirk, a VDGIF fisheries biologist, in which we review the most recent science and legal requirements on the species (link below if you’re interested).
      th-cam.com/video/lceYaOj8P9M/w-d-xo.html
      Still, invasive impact sometimes takes several decades to manifest, so if someone does harvest intensely, I understand their position.
      My personal opinion is that the degree of their impact will depend on the waters involved. In uniformly shallow waters with no established large predatory species (like Blackwater), they’ll likely have more of an impact (though I do think their impact is overblown and the snakehead scapegoated for our own impact).
      In deeper waters though, they’ll likely have less of an impact, especially when those deeper waters have large, established predatory fish.
      For me, they’re an admirable species, excellent parents, and incredible sportfish.
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    What are your thoughts on these fishing being invasive and not releasing them? Im visiting my parents in Dorchester county and decided to go catch some snakeheads after hearing so much about them. I got 4 out of a really small piece of water near a bridge. The DNR here is really serious about these things being bad for the ecosystem and they have HUGE fines for transporting them live. Just wondering if you've fished these waters before snakeheads where around and if you've seen a significant change in the population of native species.

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KambotroutFishing thank you for the in-depth reply. I caught 3 more today and did release one small one because I would have only been killing it due to the "invasive species" stigma.
      I can tell you in my area they have boosted the local economy. I saw dozens of people out fishing for them today and 20 years ago (last time I really fished fresh water here) nobody fished these waters except a few weeks in the spring for the crappie run.
      I did notice something odd today. I grew up here and know the local wildlife pretty well. I saw a mallard hen with several ducklings, maybe 3-4" long. She was traversing from one end of the creek to the other and instead of swimming she was walking on land. They only went into the water for one small 10' stretch and then immediately got back on land. I found this quite odd and my gut feeling is the snakeheads are eating ducklings. I know a lot of things eat ducklings, so I'm not saying that in a negative way, but I was surprised to see this. I guess that makes sense, they are as big as a medium size pike and they are known for eating ducks.

  • @patricktrossbach668

      Time on the water brother.
      Fry balls may give themselves away by their color (bright orange). They’ll also tend to stay on the surface after a lure hits them, whereas most minnows and menhaden schools will submerge and scatter.

    Hey, forgive me if I'm missing something, because I'm honestly not entirely sure, but I've always heard you're supposed to kill them when you catch them since they're invasive and outcompete other predators, most notably bass. Am I wrong?

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Steve, no worries at all. Most departments of natural resources and fisheries managers will encourage you to kill any snakehead you catch, but you aren’t legally required to do so.
      The one exception is New York State, but I doubt that law would stand if it were challenged. The idea that the government can force a private citizen to kill an animal that already exists in the environment runs afoul of many constitutional protections.
      The published science on snakehead also has yet to demonstrate invasive impact on native species. That’s not to say there is no impact or that impact won’t manifest in the future, but thus far, the published science is encouraging.
      I’ve actually done an interview series with VDGIF Biologist John Odenkirk which reviews the science and laws around snakehead if you’re interested:

I've also heard of people mistakenly killing bowfins (not sure they're native to our waters, maybe more midwest?) because I guess they bear resemblance to snakeheads. Yeah, it is a weird notion that you'd be required by law to kill anything if you're catch it, although I'd understand strong encouragement if they're a serious threat to the native ecosystem. @@KambotroutFishing it has reduced natural population of all species of fishes. Last Year (June), the areas that used to hold fishes, no longer due to climate change and human population increase that changed the natural area all together. What I did see was that people were farming more fish-especially funded by US into research and developent. Kublai Khan damn. I’m sorry to hear it brother.
      Human development is usually at the core of most of our fisheries issues here as well. Aquaculture can help meet the demand for fish, but seeing people unable to harvest their own fish from the natural environment frustrates the hell out of me.
      It took many decades here after industrialization and development before we began to realize and appreciate the importance of wetlands and water quality.

You talk about how it has changed the area from a 2 to 3 lb bass area, into such a fun place to fish for way bigger predatory fish...well that is messing up the local eco-system! Natural animals like perch, bass, crayfish, frogs, turtles, waterfowl, baitfish, muskrat, beavers, crabs all use these marsh lands as their breeding grounds and we need to protect that. I am born and raised in MD and think snakehead fishing is great however, you must dispatch of these fish when you catch them. PLEASE!!
