    Just subscribed and love the videos. I live in ohio by lake erie and catch bowfin's which is similar to snakehead's but have always wanted to catch a snake head. Plan on making a trip to Maryland next year to fish for them. What is the best time of year to fish topwater for them?

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks much!
      The best time of year is hard to pin down given how volatile the weather has been lately. Usually the best time though I’d the prespawn bite.
      They have two main prespawn periods which occur roughly during late April and early May and then again in late July and early August.
      The magic water temp seems to be sustained temps of high 60s and low 70s.

    Great video as usual - I assume this is Blackwater. I'm trying to catch my first snakehead in the Magothy River. I've had absolutely no luck so far despite my best efforts, and I'm questioning my tactics. I did spot a snakehead in the headwaters of one of the creeks. He swam right up to my boat, looked at me as if to say - dude you have no chance of catching me, and then disappeared into the murky water. I would love to see you catch some in the Magothy to show us how it's done.

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question 👍
      I can generally use my pedal drive when I’m in the channel moving between areas, but once I’m fishing closer to shore or in the pad fields, it’s def back to using the paddle.
      In some areas, it’ll just be weeds that wrap around your drive/propeller, but in other areas, they’ll be big stumps covered with barnacles. If you see exposed timber, steer clear of that area when using your drive.

    These fish are not supposed to be released.

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I often harvest them, but it usually depends on whether or not I have room in the freezer or know someone who wants them.
      They’re the best tasting fish in freshwater and have an excellent meat to body ratio. They’re also easy to filet, so if I need meat or know someone who does, I’ll often keep them.
      With that said, I’ll release them if I don’t have a need to harvest. Many people take an issue with this because they’re labeled as an invasive species, and most fisheries managers do highly encourage their harvest.
      However, the published science thus far has not shown invasive impact. I’ve actually done an interview series with John Odenkirk, a VDGIF fisheries biologist, in which we review the most recent science and legal requirements on the species (link below if you’re interested).
      th-cam.com/video/lceYaOj8P9M/w-d-xo.html
      Still, invasive impact sometimes takes several decades to manifest, so if someone does harvest intensely, I understand their position.
      For me though, they’re an admirable species, excellent parents, and incredible sportfish.
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      Legal requirements on Snakehead vary by state, but in most cases, you’re allowed to release them immediately after catching them back into the waters in which you caught them. That’s the case in MD, DE, and VA (this was in MD).
      It’s usually only illegal to possess live snakehead or to transport live snakehead (which makes good sense in my opinion).

      Still, invasive impact sometimes takes several decades to manifest, so if someone does harvest intensely, I understand their position.
      For me though, they’re an admirable species, excellent parents, and incredible sportfish.
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    I love the pandemonium after you land them 😜 There's nothing like it. I really think I need to make a drive.
