How To Find and Catch Northern Snakehead Part 1

- This is the time of year I start chasing after northern snakehead and two of the most common questions I get while getting on an off the water are, “Where do you catch them?” and “What do you catch them with?”. Both questions are information dense. So I'm breaking this up into two parts. The first part will be the what, when where, and how to target them. Part 2 will be lure and equipment and think is useful to chasing these fish.

I live in Cecil County, and I've heard they hit around here but have never even glimpsed one. Do you fish down on the eastern shore?
You are in a good area for snakeheads. I do fish the eastern shore some but i fish the western shore more for snakeheads. There isn’t a tributary on the Chesapeake that doesn’t have them. It’s a good idea to start at the head water areas and work from there.
What time of year would you expect them to be pushed up the Susquehanna up at the Conowingo!? I fish the Conowingo dam a good bit
I really appreciate both part 1 and part 2. My biggest struggle right now is finding areas you've described that are reachable without a boat or a yak. Any suggestions for the Harford county area that can be fished on the shore?
That’s a problem everywhere. There aren’t a ton of shoreline fishing access points on the western shore. I wish there were. The Susquehanna has plenty it’s just getting to them.

Great video with excellent info! Just earned yourself a subscriber. If you're ever in the area of Bear Creek near Sparrows Point hmu- my fishing mentor passed away a few yrs ago (rip Sgt. Pajak) so I'm always lf someone to fish with. There's great snakehead and striper action here, I just need to get out more to get them. Take care and tight lines!

@@MDYakFishing Thanks. Everyone says stripers run thick through here in the fall & I've caught a few dinks on ploppers so far but haven't been out much. I was live lining some banded killifish (I think lol) recently though and something chomped the backside off a huge minnow but I missed it helpin my nephew get a frog out of the weeds- all that was left was the head and pec fins when i went to re-cast. Pretty sure it was a snakehead- other than blues or turtles idk what else would do that. It looked just like the chewed-up heads my piranhas used to leave floatin everywhere after a feeding frenzy.
@@davethegaultney224 Stripers this time of year (pre-Fall) is hit or miss. Water quality plays a huge roll. All the blues I've caught around there are 12" fish that are just the right size to mess your gear up. LOL. I'd like to catch the big one but I don't love catching the small ones.
@@MDYakFishing Yeah the water quality here is highly suspect- EPA had a lot to say about this area a few yrs back but it's slowly getting better. The area is still full of life though- certain times of night I love just floatin in my yak in the middle of the river as fish are jumping and dancing on the surface in every direction around me. It's a bit frustrating seeing how many fish are in there refusing to bite anything I throw some days, but it's a beautiful sight nonetheless. There be sea monsters here too lol- I've seen HUGE things lurking just below the surface and blowups that looked like a kid just did a cannonball. It's just a very finicky bite here in my experience and cant find an lm/sm bass anywhere in the river-probably due to water quality as you mentioned.
If u only had one lure for ur best chance to go out every day and try to catch a snakehead on open water would it be mepps/chatterbait?
Open water that a spinner bait/chatter sit would be high.

I use 12lbs Kastking braid on spinning rods. If so use a baitcaster I use 30lbs braid to avoid cut in on the reel.

They are all in Minnesota now. They migrated. Do not come to the east coast for snakeheads. Midwest on a farm pond. They got up and ran there trust me. Hurry up and go!!!!!
I haven’t heard they were introduced in Minnesota waters yet. I lived in Grand Forks ND for a couple years and fished Minnesota bit.
We need to find out who first released this fish and put up a statue to that guy. Wonderful fish. They are here. You can't do a thing about it. They will always be here. There are billions of them Come into the future, make them game fish.
LOL. There are a couple problems with that though. Making them a “game fish” means devoting tax dollars to continually evaluate and regulate a species of fish. This is not a cheap undertaking and my taxes are high enough. Next, they are so fecund that they can produce 100,000 eggs a season and they also guard there young making them so prolific that “game fish” status will never be needed. None of the other countries that have this invasive fish have ever had to manage the population. Even with immense fishing pressure.
@@MDYakFishing Yakfishing man; The state of Virginia already has assigned John Odenkirk to evaluate and watch over just the snakehead population. So those thousands of dollars are already being spent (on one species). His salary comes from fish license sales, not general taxes. We have never managed our fish or game regulations based on what other countries do. Restaurants in DC have found out how good snakehead meat is, and are buying snakeheads from local fisherman. So much so, that the game commission has put a requirement to buy a license before you can sell them. Unfortunately, our game commissions have always been super slow to adapt to changes, but we should be attempting to drag them out of the past and into the future. Snakeheads are here, they aren't going away, lets regulate them.

They dont spawn morw than once a year. Everyone's targeting them fryballs in June...you never see that any other time to Target them so obviously they only spawn here once a year. Have you ever noticed the egg sacs in a fish cleaning them?? Exactly..those eggs take a season to grow to maturity to be released. Obviously they can only spawn once a season
Thanks for watching. The current research being done here in Maryland indicates they are spawning more than once a year. I’d suggest you take a look at the work being done by Josh Newhard and PhD Joe Love. I think that will settle your confusion.
@@MDYakFishing I don't ever believe scientist or dnr. They are all bs suggestive relative to their own gain info..or false info for real. Just like the dnr claim yellow perch decline for other reasons than them killing off the sav in the 80s...yeah they declined when the eggs didn't have anything to grip and died in sediment..oh and the rockfish...Omega Corp fishes here for the rockfish food source...bycatch?? Probably ubsurd dead rockfish. Dnr regulations to let people fish them exhausted from migration in spring. Yeah they die when you fight an already exhausted fish from depth nitrogen in blood...but let Omega fish the herring ...maybe dnr regulations are the reason for declined rockfish population..not maybe it's a fact. Yellow perch gone from spraying sav in 80s.. point is any info your getting from scientist is bs at best. Do your own research. I'm glad snakehead are here. They don't hurt anything more than Largemouth bass being invasive here...or smallmouth bass being invasive in upper rivers. Snakehead are not the problem..blue cats are going to do way more damage. But keep listening to your scientist lmao
@@colincanine2977 I enjoyed reading your point of view. I appreciate your perspective and can understand skepticism and a reluctance to trust agencies with a perceived bias. I can assure you I’ve absorbed data from multiple sources to include recent works by Odenkirk/Isel in Virgina and others. I’ve also looked at more comprehensive studies conducted by Courtenay and Williams and others outside the U.S. by Masuda and Chiba which where conducted in Russia and Asia concerning Northen Snakeheads. I have my own anecdotal experience as well that aligns with the literature I’ve read. I’ve only been targeting this fish since 2017 and have caught less than 800 but from that I’ve certainly observed patterns none of which divorce from the science I’ve read. Why not farm raised them? Help the fishing industry. Best tasting and good sustainability for our fishing echo system
There was a business in Arkansas that farmed them before the Crawford Md discovery. It's illegal to do so now as the fish is invasive. The work is still being done on determining their ecological impact on largest estuary in the U.S. So far the peer reviewed work being done here in MD does not look good.

A snakehead roughly every 3 minutes. I’ve had a handful of days like that over the course of several years. Every time it has been on the first warm spell in the spring.
