There was a time when self sufficiency was implicitly expected of Americans. Those who didn’t were called bums, hobos, derelicts, vagrants, etc. We more recently have excused drug addiction, lack of work ethic, criminality, etc under a therapeutic agenda, rather than as a moral failing. Homelessness is now being subsidized, which of course only encourages more.
