    Well, I finally got around to doing it. Followed your video to the "T" and the shudder is completely gone. Runs like it did when I bought it and the shuddering was absolutely horrible. Thank you very much for the video...In case any other readers are curious, I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado LTZ (5.3L, V8)..
    The transmission filter and amount of transmission fluid to put back inside the transmission is the EXACT amount as shown in this video...

    Good video and thorough explanation of everything. My dealer was going to charge me for this service so I had my local mechanic who I trust perform the service. Tried to get away on the cheap so just did the fluid drain and swap but the shudder didn’t go away. Had him swap out the trans filter the 2nd time it was done and this time it worked. 2016 Yukon XL Denali with the same transmission.

    FYI - GM stopped asking dealers to emulate a shudder with pico gauge around mid 2019. Ask your dealer to ref latest version of TSB 18-NA-355 and all you have to do is present your vehicle within the remaining powertrain warranty, tell them you think you have a shudder, and they will triple flush your transmission under warranty. In a Corvette, that's worth 24 quarts of new blue-label Mobil1 LV ATF HP. This is a GTL group 3+ base stock with a special additive pack from Infineum, which is a joint venture between ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell Chemicals.

The only 😊problem I had was finding the Mobile 1 Blue Label Fluid. Couldn’t find it anywhere. Amazon shows it available but I gave up on them after 10 days. So,I went to my local Napa Auto store and purchased Valvoline Full Synthetic ATF Dexron VI and Mercon LV. Viola! The results were better than when the truck was new😅. Appreciate you posting this. Just a quick heads-up... trans temp is supposed to be between 95-113 for fluid check per GM service manual. Also, if you still have the thermal bypass (thermostat) they recommend to bring it up past 190 initially to cycle the fluid through the cooler lines and then let it cool down to check per the above temps. Obviously if you've deleted the thermostat you can simply check when it's at the above range. Great video!

    Nice job on the video. Many GMC and Chevrolet dealers back in 2016 to 2017, were buying back Trucks and Cars with the 8L90 via the lemon laws. Every state has different lemon laws but GM was buying them back due to the multiple repeat repairs without resolution. This was all because of the Torque Converter Shudder. I remember the dealership I was at originally used the Mobil 1 Black Bottle Fluid, only to have trucks and cars return in like 3000 miles or less with the same complaint. As I recall the Mobil 1 Blue Bottle Fluid came out in 2017 or so and resolved the Torque Converter Shudder immediately and no return complaints. Somewhat surprised you were still able to buy Black Bottle Fluid, as I remember the GM dealers in my area were instructed by the zone office to discard any Black Bottle Fluid due to some dealers still using it and creating repeat customer complaints.

    I actually like the easy of doing simplicity of doing a flush on my 8l90. After I shut the truck off and while hot, I opened the level check bolt. 2 quarts came out. Then, I went around and broke loose all the pan bolts. It was more start forward than the 4l60e. 4 quarts in the pan. No issues with the exhaust like I thought. Just yaw to the passenger side. Changed the filter and cleaned everything. Not too messy. The fill... I pump until fluid came out. Started the truck and kept pumping until it was just bright red fluid coming out. Check the temperature and let it dripple and closed it up.

    One of the main reasons the transmission vibrates like that is due to programming. To save fuel manufacturers are programming the torque converter to lockup earlier at lower speeds. Of course it helps with efficiency and gives a rush of acceleration. But, it loads up the torque converter, the constant locking and unlocking causes a little bit of friction… which causes a bit of heat each time… which adds up and warps the unit. All this causes the shuddering we feel when driving. Due to the mating surfaces to be incomplete. If you catch it in time a reprogramming cause save the torque converter.

    Did this tonight. I had it flushed several years ago by the dealer before they started using the blue label fluid and the problem came back. Basically parked it for a while or just 'drove around it' by getting to know how to work the throttle.
    The dealership put the drain bolt in so tight I bet it has 80+ ft lbs on it and it stripped. I could NOT get it off. So now I'm sitting here with a stripped bolt on the bottom of the pan and the trans filled until it came back out the filler hole. Think I'm going to drive it a couple miles to an oil change shop and have them get it out. Probably going to need a new plug though. Arrrgh.

    OMG wow!!!! So I did things a bit different than I was planning. I bought two pumps from harbor freight for $8 each. Never pulled the pan (only 39k miles), pulled out 6 quarts of DIRTY fluid, I was surprised how dirty it was, nearly black. Then filled 6 clean quarts, then drained again after running the car 10 mins through gears, etc. I drained 4 different times and filled 4 times. Even on the last attempt the fluid was still far from new looking. But I decided to give it a drive, INSTANTLY the trans shifted smooth through all gears and the shudder was gone! I have been losing sleep over this for weeks. It wasn’t that hard to do at all even on a corvette where it’s much tighter working space. Not going to lie I was skeptical on this working. Before I had a hard shift into 5/6/7 gears and then a shudder after it was in those gears. Not it’s smooth shifting and shudder is gone. I pulled out 23 quarts total and put 23 clean quarts in. I estimate that the fluid is still only 75% fresh. My backup plan was if this didn’t fix it, I will drop the pan and change the filter and fill it once more. But I am feeling blessed that this did the trick! WOW thank god! The guy sold me the car knowing it had this problem, but clearly didn’t inform me. What a prick! I hope you guys give this a shot.

    So I did exactly this a year ago and it fixed my shutter. However after putting about 20,000km the shutter is starting to come back. I'm going to be doing a flush again and hopefully it takes away the shutter again. What I am assuming is there is still old fluid in it from the previous flush that just causes the shuttering to some back. Hopefully with another flush it will dilute the old fluid more and eliminate the problem for good.

    • @737mechanic

      This will almost 100 percent cure the shudder problem. As far as the harsh shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st mine is about 90 percent better on that issue. I still have the occasional harsh shift mainly from 1st to 2nd but it is so few and far between I live with it. I do plan on doing it again before long to see if it helps any more but until then I am fine with it.

    You should compare Mobil to Amsol fluid. High reviews for Amsol. I have a 2018 Silverado 6 speed. Transmission thermostat causes oil to heat up extremely high before it will circulate through cooler. Newer models have been fixed. I swopped out thermostat with Surecool bypass and what a difference it made. Temperatures now run the same as 2020 models.

    I had the dealer do this under warranty on my 2015 Silverado 6.2L 8-speed (8L90) at right about the mileage you have in the video. They used the blue label ATF. Since then I passed 100k miles. The shudder hasn't returned that I can tell (I have aggressive tires, so it's not quite as easy to tell), but I am getting some hard shifts in low gears, especially when cold. I plan to do this procedure soon. Great video.

      The dealer did the fluid swap and then did a shift relearn/reprogram for the transmission on mine. The hard shifting and shutter are gone. If you are still under warranty should see if the dealer will do the relearn.

    • @TerryHernlund
      @TerryHernlund 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@metroplex2006 I did have that done. They did the relearn with the flush a year ago, and indeed it did solve the issue. I'm over 100k now though, and the hard shifts are back. There was an unrelated warranty repair on the temp sensor harness about a month later, which requires removing the pan. Maybe they used the black label stuff by mistake? I don't know. I'm just going to do this anyway. I'm not working four bays at once on flat rate, so I can at least have peace of mind that it's really done right.

  • @dealsfromvirginia1773
    @dealsfromvirginia1773 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I appreciate your hard work on this vid but I'm pretty sure your fluid is low. Considering you drained the cooler and lines, they never filled unless you had previously installed a bypass for the trans thermostat. That thermostat does not open and allow fluid into the lines and cooler until the trans reaches 190 on older models, or 158 on newer cooler lines. I'm glad your shutter is gone and wondering if you have any updates considering this vid appears to be about 2 years old at my viewing.

    • @737mechanic
      @737mechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That screw has a stand pipe so when you fill the transmission with fluid and warm it to the proper temperature you remove that screw to let any excess drain out, once the excess is drained it will be at the perfect level. If you take that out and nothing drains out you need to keep adding fluid until it starts draining.

    I run wolf synthetic in all my transmissions. The stuff works great. Being around Transmissions my whole life I know a thing or two about them!

      If you have shuddering it will help.

    Do you recommend I change filter ? Truck has 109k and is having issues 2-1 shift sometimes. Or can I just replace fluid ?

    • @737mechanic
      @737mechanic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fluid alone will probably be fine as long as the transmission is still in good shape. Good shape meaning it is not making big chunks of metal.

    Was that a 3/8" ID clear tubing you used to pull the fluid out of the lines, or did you go from a the 3/8" ID to a 1/2" ID?

      Either that or 5/16. I have both so I can connect them together.

    THANK YOU GREAT VIDEO . One thing do you put a level to the bottom of the transmission pan to make sure it is level, ??,

    • @737mechanic
      @737mechanic  ปีที่แล้ว

      The frame is better because the transmission's normal installation could be at a slight angle and what they want is the vehicle sitting in its normal position. But is reality either one will be close enough.
