Hey Danny, I changed the filter and fluid yesterday (10 Aug 23) on my 2017 Yukon (Denali). (30K miles) My filter was sightly different with a seal I also changed (this vehicles filter had no metal clip on top & had a longer tube - no big deal) I used 7 quarts of the Mobile 1 blue label full synthetic ATF LV HD. Danny, great videos on the 2015 Denali. I fixed my tail light and door panels based on your vids! And with this video, I hope I've fixed the "torque converter shutter" issue. BTW, great taste in cars. I have a 2015 Denali XL and a 2004 Screaming Yellow Cobra Convertible. I also have a Mach 1 but not a newer one like yours. It's a 1970. Again, thanks!!!
Thats super neat we have similar cars and you have a 70 mach 1. The screaming yellow cobra is a very rare one too. Be sure to use the LV ATF HP fluid if you have the 8 speed. 2021 Silverado 1500 5.3 8spd….that pry bar trick doesn’t work. Tried to reposition it even took the exhaust clamp off the downside of y pipe. It hits the crossbar. It does come down enough to where u can angle it down towards the front. Take the filter out and clean the pan but be careful. I was able to do it without completely taking it off. It fixed my chadder and the transmission feeling like it was struggling going into gears or like misfiring almost.

Good luck. It’s worth a try. There will be a lot of fluid you won’t be able to access that is up in the torque converter, so I would recommend doing this process twice (or at least once the fluid and filter have been replaced, drain it from the overflow drain plug and fill it again. Thanks for the great video. Great job! I am about to tackle mine now after watching this. A couple of questions: if you are very confident you put exactly the amount of fluid you drained back in, is it necessary to remove the 10mm drain bolt (at the end of the video) to see if it drips out? Also, I noticed you had a check engine light on, even at the end of the video during the test drive. Was the CEL related to this transmission service in any way, or was it on for another reason? Thank you!
Yes, the code was P0711 for a bad transmission temperature sensor. I disconnected the battery afterward the new harness was installed and it went away once it was complete. I have a video for that as well th-cam.com/video/PxAeX6dZbCA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MRxxYdHZaNEHEmGd
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage thank you for your reply. I completed my transmission service and it was exactly like you showed it in your video. I did notice that I had no heat shield. The last person to touch the transmission was a dealer that had to drain and flush the transmission twice and reprogram the computer to get the shudder to go away. Guess they didn't reinstall it. After this service, during the test drive I noticed that the very slight shudder I was getting at 49 mph has now gone and the transmission feels a lot smoother. I may drive it for about 5K miles and then do this procedure again to help clean as much fluid as possible without doing an actual flush. Again, thanks for the great video.
Great information here. If you have 8L90E transmission problems, changing the fluid (blue label) is only a temporary fix @ best!!! Which is contrary to what the dealer will tell you. These transmission are a junk.
You’ll still only get what’s in the pan out and it will be hot. This drain a replace is less invasive and less risky than to flush the system, but it is more time consuming and uses more fluid if you repeat the process a few times to dilute it. You won’t need to drip the pan again once the filter is replaced, but you can drain and refill the fluid every few 100 miles
@@dannyjohnsonsgaragehey,dropped off today my Sierra 2019 for the transmission oil change and they said will take 3h because they need to drop exhaust and camshaft??True?
Thank you for this video. I was speaking with my brother in law and he mentioned some other Yukon owner with the 8-spd had just about 300k on the original transmission by doing a trans fluid change every 50k miles. Also, a lot more simple than I was imagining. Question, after your test drive and you came back to remove the 10mm plug at the bottom of the pan, how much fluid can one expect to come out before it comes to a slow drip?
The real reason for torque converter shudder and the need for LV fluid is allowed slip of the Torque Converter Clutch in the factory programming of the transmission computer. If you get hp tuners, (send off your TCM 2017+) and zero allowed TCC slip you don’t have any shudder.
@@treybadd Can you share any more information about this? I haven't used HPTuners but do Motec/Syvecs/Haltech. Is it as simple as setting an allowed slip value to zero which makes the truck lose 1mpg or something and completely gets rid of the problem?
You cant just turn it off. Hp tuners has to crack your tcm before you can even tune the trans. It literally says on their site that they cant tune the trans on these
Again, great video! Question: Is it necessary to change the transmission filter and gasket when doing a simple drain and fill on my 2019 Silverado w/ 8L90 and 38k miles? A local Chevy dealership service department says that's what they do and that is all I need. So many opinions and I am so very confused...
The filter is a great idea and very simple to pop off and on, so I would strongly recommend it when removing the pan. The oil pan gasket for the transmission was reusable as long as not damaged
great video...question if im only replacing 7-8 quarts, is it ok for the small amount of old fluid in the lines and converter to mix with the new , since im not doing a flush? thanks
Yes, you’ll have another 7 quarts up in the torque converter as well, so the best thing to is then change the fluid again (possibly a 3rd time) now that the new filter is in place. You won’t need to drop the pan. It’s not the best case but you can’t get it all out at once
So at the very end you didn't show the slow drip you were referring to, did you have to add any more ATF? If so, do you just remove the fill plug at the top and add until it's a slow drip?
Mike C I later added in a slight amount more and it dripped that amount out. It was very close from what I took out. So for that remember to fill the transmission first so it doesn’t burn you filling it, and be careful once it reaches that 100 degree mark as you remove the bottom drain (fill level) plug
In my case the pump used for removal has also been used to remove other fluid types. You always want the fluid going in to be as clean as possible. Even mixing different types of transmission fluid from other cars (even new fluid) is bad.
This same 6:43 transmission oil, is it compatible with my 2016 gmc sierra 1500, 5.3l ? Amazon & any other website says “not compatible with vehicle” id like to know if its safe to use . Thank you.
Hi , just a quick question, I have a 2016 Yukon Denali, do you have a fix or an idea for shaking or engine vibration ? Dealer don’t want to accept there is an issue with the car
What? GM Knows there is a problem! It's most likely torque converter "Shutter" This is a huge problem on the 8L90, there is a GM (TSB # 19-NA-018) for this issue, they will first do a fluid exchange with updated fluid, reset the transmission adaption "Tap Cells" test drive the vehicle and see if it goes away, if not, it's most likely going to need to have the torque converter replaced. I suggest you start putting pressure on your dealer to fix it!
not sure if you’re aware...there is a major issue with these transmissions....they have a shudder problem....i have a 2018 Silverado with the 8 spd and it just started the shudder a week or so ago....going into dealer tomorrow to get flush and fill with the fluid shown in this video...it’s supposed to fix the problem....search on youtube for GM transmission shudder and you’ll find lots of information.....
It’s called torque shutter from the torque converter. It’s a common issue with the 8 speed and this is one of the “fixes” However, you’ll only get half the fluid out since the rest is up in the converter , so you may want to replace the fluid again to continue to dilute it
I personally believe that it is best to change the filter and the fluid each time and not do a flush as it is more gentle on the system. You will not get all of the fluid out by simply draining it because much is up in the torque converter, so multiple fluid and filter changes seem to be the best.
When you added fluid after driving, did you add it through the fill plug again? You didn't show and installed the heat shield is why I'm curious. I'm about to do mine. I will wait to install the heat shield of I'm going to possibly have to add fluid unless there's another way.
A flush can use more pressure than the transmission uses, it can also mix 2 types of fluid from the last flush and the junk in the system from the last flush.
The blue one is what you’ll want for the 8 speed 8l90e transmission www.amazon.com/Mobil-124715-Synthetic-Quart-Bottles/dp/B07Q3H159N?crid=A9G9KYUUW6QJ&keywords=Mobil+1+124715+Synthetic+LV+ATF+HP+Case+1+Quart+Bottles+Set+of+6&qid=1646415180&sbo=RZvfv//HxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=mobil+1+124715+synthetic+lv+atf+hp+case+1+quart+bottles+set+of+6,aps,135&sr=8-2&linkCode=sl1&tag=2004047-20&linkId=f1fe31c99067b5e8a8583b8259956a16&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl
Did you warm up the truck before draining or did you do it cold? Seen another video where the guys lets it drain over night. Getting as much info before doing my 2015 tahoe.
@DannyJohnson'sGarage Yo bro, what about if i put the Autozone red transmision fluid, Will it work the same as the one on the video? Or do i have to force fully use the same one as you on my yukon?
Let’s just say GM had had such trouble with transmission fluid on the 8 speed 8L90E that they stock the fluid shown in the video at the dealerships and use it. It’s up to your research to use what you want, but this is what is best according to them. www.amazon.com/Mobil-124715-Synthetic-Quart-Bottles/dp/B07Q3H159N?crid=A9G9KYUUW6QJ&keywords=Mobil+1+124715+Synthetic+LV+ATF+HP+Case+1+Quart+Bottles+Set+of+6&qid=1646415180&sbo=RZvfv//HxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sprefix=mobil+1+124715+synthetic+lv+atf+hp+case+1+quart+bottles+set+of+6,aps,135&sr=8-2&linkCode=sl1&tag=2004047-20&linkId=f1fe31c99067b5e8a8583b8259956a16&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl
Does anyone know why my 2018 gmc Yukon xl don’t go into drive anymore? It will move into other gear but not to drive. Recently it was service at a jiffy lube. And when I check the fluid level it was way over the hot in the dip stick. And somehow the fluid don’t look red, it look clear but u can see light red tint when u look at it close. And when I feel the fluid it don’t feel like transmission fluid. And it dry up fast on my finger
Yes, the transmission does not have a dip stick to check fluid levels. When the vehicle is at operating temperature it should be slightly dripping from that bolt. Carful because it’s right next to the exhaust
As many as will come out, so keep track. It will have around 14 quarts, but without removing the transmission and torque converter you’ll only get about half out
Danny, Awesome video but I don't think I want to tackle this. Question: I have selected a shop and they use Valvoline product vs Mobile One. Thoughts on Valvoline? Or should I just go to the dealer and have it changed? They want $500 to change oil, filter and gasket vs $400 at this shop in the Dallas, TX area. Thanks
If it’s the 8 speed transmission (8L90E) it should have the exact mobil 1 HP LV shown in the video. I’m fact, GM now Carries that fluid in their dealership. That’s my experience anyway. Many have said the mobil 1 Hp LV makes the difference from it not having torque converter shutter. Maybe ask the shop if you can bring them the fluid, but for $100 it might just be best for the dealer to do it
Also, this may not be relevant, but the fluid and filter video actually comes from my transmission harness video. While the pan is off, it’s simple to replace and you might also consider it or at least know about it th-cam.com/video/PxAeX6dZbCA/w-d-xo.html
There really isn’t a way to know. The factory used the 2 piece as far as I can see, so unless someone already replaced it, you should have the 2 piece.

I recommend a flush but do it your self don’t take it to the dealer. I did mine on my 2015 Cadillac Escalade, new filter welded a bolt for easy maintenance for next time, delete the thermo switch and then flush the transmission from the return line on the radiator came out better then the dealership.
My yukon denali 2015 did not get any oil change and now its past 200k kilometers, some mechanics suggest not to change since it might break the transmission, please advice
The ac shouldn’t have much connection unless they bent or broke a line while working on it. Unfortunately, they have problems with the condenser and lines on the yukon
The system will hold about 14 quarts, but it won’t all come out since it’s still up in the torque converter. You’ll just need to measure what comes out, replace that amount, then check the level with the car running and warm
This is supposed to fix it, but you’ll get about 7-8 quarts out this way which leaves about that same amount in the converter. This was part of my transmission harness replacement (you’ll also see my video on that on the channel) which solved my hard shifts and check engine light. I don’t have the shudder at any speed (maybe a slight amount coming to a dead stop)
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage i have a shudder but no hard shifts. Thats why i was wondering if this worked. Dealership wants somewhere around 400 to flush and fluid and filter change.
My sisters 08 Escalade is as making a bad noise right at the trans filter area it’ll shift gears when driving but like a minute later the noise comes on and won’t shift into gear anymore you have to turn the truck off and back on in order for it to run again but then that noise comes on and won’t go anywhere do you think by changing the filter will fix the problem ? I checked the oil and it’s black
It might, but I would also look into shift solenoids or something more electronic. You can see them when the pan is off and look for any bad connections, but for that year it’s a different transmission so you’ll have to have someone more skilled take a look
I would only recommend exchanging the fluid, but not an actual flush with the machine. The process should be similar for the 10 speed but I am not certain

I hope so too!

They must have changed the cross member for 2021. Glad it fixed your issue

Good luck. It’s worth a try. There will be a lot of fluid you won’t be able to access that is up in the torque converter, so I would recommend doing this process twice (or at least once the fluid and filter have been replaced, drain it from the overflow drain plug and fill it again. With that said you may want to buy about 12 quarts

Great video! A job I can do on a 2017 Denali and save a few bucks thanks to you.
Great video thanks ,I always think there should be a drain plug on every pan .
I agree!
I have a video for that as well

Danny I put fluid back in then when I open the drain. Almost 4qts came out
Did you open the overflow plug after it had already ran and got up to temperature? How much did you take out compared to how much you put in?
Nice. Detail. Job. Thank you.
Hey Thanks for the video, how often do u recommend to do the change, i have a 2020 yukon xl 87k miles am i past due ?
30,000-60,000 is the recommended Intervals, also depending on how much towing or how hard the vehicle is run
What about doing it at running temp... And the bypass cooler to ensure the Torque converter and everything has been flushed?
You’ll still only get what’s in the pan out and it will be hot. This drain a replace is less invasive and less risky than to flush the system, but it is more time consuming and uses more fluid if you repeat the process a few times to dilute it. You won’t need to drip the pan again once the filter is replaced, but you can drain and refill the fluid every few 100 miles
Great Video..Don’t you need flush first?
Flushing tends to do more harm on the transmission. A simple drain and refill seems to work best in my experience , but it’s up to you
@@dannyjohnsonsgaragehey,dropped off today my Sierra 2019 for the transmission oil change and they said will take 3h because they need to drop exhaust and camshaft??True?
Thank you for this video. I was speaking with my brother in law and he mentioned some other Yukon owner with the 8-spd had just about 300k on the original transmission by doing a trans fluid change every 50k miles. Also, a lot more simple than I was imagining. Question, after your test drive and you came back to remove the 10mm plug at the bottom of the pan, how much fluid can one expect to come out before it comes to a slow drip?
It depends on how much it’s over-filled. I’ve been nervous and added an extra quart just to loose the full quart.
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage got it! Thanks again!
The real reason for torque converter shudder and the need for LV fluid is allowed slip of the Torque Converter Clutch in the factory programming of the transmission computer. If you get hp tuners, (send off your TCM 2017+) and zero allowed TCC slip you don’t have any shudder.
I heard the dod/afm is also dangerous for the transmission
@@dannyjohnsonsgaragethe allowed slip is 20 in v8 and 40 in Dod.
@@treybadd Can you share any more information about this? I haven't used HPTuners but do Motec/Syvecs/Haltech. Is it as simple as setting an allowed slip value to zero which makes the truck lose 1mpg or something and completely gets rid of the problem?
@@rix911 no idea on mileage. Yrs you change the allowed slip to 1 or 0 and no more shudder.
B&M makes a transmisson dipstick for these 8 speeds
They need one for the 10 Speed now.
for 200.00 .. crazy price..
Can you put the link?
So at the very end you didn't show the slow drip you were referring to, did you have to add any more ATF? If so, do you just remove the fill plug at the top and add until it's a slow drip?
Mike C I later added in a slight amount more and it dripped that amount out. It was very close from what I took out. So for that remember to fill the transmission first so it doesn’t burn you filling it, and be careful once it reaches that 100 degree mark as you remove the bottom drain (fill level) plug
Hey Danny, if this method is not replacing all of the fluid, why be concerned about using the same pump to add new fluid? Thanks
In my case the pump used for removal has also been used to remove other fluid types. You always want the fluid going in to be as clean as possible. Even mixing different types of transmission fluid from other cars (even new fluid) is bad.

Hi , just a quick question, I have a 2016 Yukon Denali, do you have a fix or an idea for shaking or engine vibration ? Dealer don’t want to accept there is an issue with the car
If it’s only in the engine it’s most likely the motor mounts. Mine were replaced under warranty so with 60k miles it sounds like they go bad fast.
But mine has only 25k miles and it just start recently to vibrate, and is out of warranty, :(
Do you think those mounts can be replace by a different mechanic? The vibration only happens at 40 miles or around 70
Great video. Are the top bolts of the heat shied also 10mm? Also at what mileage did you do this? I like to change trans fluid at about 30k miles.
They’re 13 mil
I’m confused about what filter to get. Ive found different part numbers and the part number you used looks like it’s for a Colorado according to GM.
It may fit other vehicles as well, but it is for the 8 speed 8l90.
What did you mean when you said torque converter clutch shaking? When can you tell how would one know?
It’s called torque shutter from the torque converter. It’s a common issue with the 8 speed and this is one of the “fixes” However, you’ll only get half the fluid out since the rest is up in the converter , so you may want to replace the fluid again to continue to dilute it
Hello. Do you recommend flush every time for oil change or it enough to change oil with filter without flush ?
I personally believe that it is best to change the filter and the fluid each time and not do a flush as it is more gentle on the system. You will not get all of the fluid out by simply draining it because much is up in the torque converter, so multiple fluid and filter changes seem to be the best.
Awesome video !
When you added fluid after driving, did you add it through the fill plug again? You didn't show and installed the heat shield is why I'm curious. I'm about to do mine. I will wait to install the heat shield of I'm going to possibly have to add fluid unless there's another way.
Yeah, add it through the fill plug as used to fill the rest of the fluid. Leave the heat shield off until it’s all done
Thanks man. I appreciate the video. I'm about to do my temp sensor........
Hello. Great video. I am experiencing poor shifting with my 2017 LT. I was wondering why you don’t recommend a flush?
A flush can use more pressure than the transmission uses, it can also mix 2 types of fluid from the last flush and the junk in the system from the last flush.
So using a pry bar on the exhaust is safe to do as long as you don’t put too much pressure on it?
Yes, don’t be too hard or it can crack the exhaust or cause it to leak, but there isn’t much force needed to slide it out
Thank you!!! Great video very well explained !!
How were you able to change from battery voltage to transmission temp??

And when I feel the fluid it don’t feel like transmission fluid. And it dry up fast on my finger
What is the purpose of removing the 10 mm bolt at the end of the video? Is this to let any excess fluid drain out?
Yes, the transmission does not have a dip stick to check fluid levels. When the vehicle is at operating temperature it should be slightly dripping from that bolt. Carful because it’s right next to the exhaust

Why would not recommend doing the flush on this transmission? Is it the 10 speed transmission?
I would only recommend exchanging the fluid, but not an actual flush with the machine. The process should be similar for the 10 speed but I am not certain
Pressure flushing is not recommended. Static flushing will not hurt anything.
Just finished my transmission service on my 2016 Denali. Ran into an issue removing pan, and broke off the clip in the J solenoid valve. You definitely need to pry exhaust cross over down as shown when removing pan. I found it easier if I moved gasket off pan to reduce thickness at crossover. Same when reinstalling.
