  • The Brethren moons are responsible for wiping the Milky Way Galaxy clean of life. Humanity being the last life forms is on the path to destruction and extinction themselves. But what form does this extinction take? The Brethren Moons. Humanity is on their last leg it seems but what is the morphology and creation of the moons? Was any species successful at combating these moons? Does humanity stand a chance? Against the brother moons? Probably not. However, Lets discuss that process right now!

a possibility, I always thought it started in colony worlds first, so they realized this and began work on the machine at their home world. by the time the moon showed up the machine was near completion and they were able to use it. But I still think, somewhere, there must be pockets that don't revere the markers and they have survived

  • @nicholasharlan6504
    @nicholasharlan6504 4 ปีที่แล้ว +406

I always reasoned that the brethren moon and necromorphs in general were a bio weapon gone very wrong. The markers resemblance to DNA and their overall function implied to me at least that the original engineers of these devices were incredibly advanced in genetic and energy manipulation. The first marker was a "Trojan horse" approach, a "gift" possibly to a rival civilization meant to destroy them from within whilst also providing the Creator's with an enormous world destroying weapon, the first moon. And then, as these things often do, the plan worked a little too well and the moon broke free of the creator races control and began the process of assimilating all life in the galaxy.

      @ia285 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Very interesting theory. One thing I'm a little confused about. If the markers are meant to guide a species, it means they have to wait millions of years for the species to evolve to a space faring civilisation.
Wouldn't these rivalries then span millions of years?

    • @nicholasharlan6504
      @nicholasharlan6504 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

@@ia285 in this particular circumstance and only if the theory were valid, I would reason that the guided evolution came about after the original moon assimilated the rival civilization and the creator civilization. With no organic life left within it's vicinity, it had to adapt it's programming to continue feeding and creating new moons. We can see that the information for creating markers can be imprinted onto organic life forms such as issac, so the moon would also have the knowledge of how to create a marker to send out into space to begin this process, unless of course it relied on already formed markers previously made from the consumed species.

    A couple things:
First, The _Fermi Paradox_ does not hypothesize the idea of the Great Barrier. The Great Barrier is just one potential answer to the Fermi Paradox. The Fermi Paradox is a question ("where are all the aliens?"), and questions do not pose their own answers. I think this distinction is relevant because people may be confused and think the _only_ potential answer to the Fermi Paradox is the Great Barrier, when in fact it is only one of hundreds, all fascinating.
The second (which is much more nitpicky) is that it's called the Great Filter, not the Great Barrier. A barrier stops everything, whereas a filter allows some through and some not. Third, the Bretheren Moons aren't a Great Barrier or a Great Filter, because they are their own species. They would rather be a galactic superpredator, which is its own solution to the Fermi Paradox. You did identify them as an apex species. I just wanted to clarify, this is different than a Great Filter/Barrier.

The primary confusion is over why the galaxy hasn't been colonized by another civilization yet. Even given the current technology humans have (no faster than light, slow spaceships, etc) it would "only" take us a few million years to colonize the entire galaxy. The problem in Dead Space with the Brethren Moons was always one of too many incredibly, improbable events that culminate in with the formation of a Brethren Moon.
Dead Space has always been a game about the inevitable death of the universe due to entropy. The game itself was a triumph because it asked the question, "who would you be in the face of certain death?"
The creation of the Brethren Moons, both in the theory presented on the video, and in general is entirely plausible in regards to a civilization who was consumed because it tried to solve the natural entropy present in reality.
The issue I have with the Brethren Moons is that the form and purpose of the Moons is too precise to not have been engineered. It is only tangentially related to what the Necromorphs are and that is an alien virus. Just because it is alien doesn't mean that it operates differently than something terrestrial, though.
The Markers are incredibly unique in that they resonate and facilitate the transfer of energy and had to have been engineered for that purpose. They are to suited to to act as antennas!
Whatever the Markers' original shape or specific function was, it appears to be a deliberate engineered attempt to transmit information along specific frequencies.
My theory was similar to the one presented in this video, but with a few exceptions. The Markers were originally made to function as information hubs to allow the original creators to have access to a omnipresent internet that only required the power of thought to access.
The implications of all information be free of cost and energy requirements to all people, everywhere is immense! It would effectively allow a single individual to solve every problem they encountered. It would also single-handedly solve the 3 biggest hurdles a space faring civilization would face: communication, transport, and effective usage of available resources!
The problem with this technology is that in the long run everyone needs everyone else to both contribute and to survive. Each person is now a data storage point for the collective network as well as an individual. Overtime a crowdsourcing effort this massive begins to worry about the continuation of the network as opposed to it being a very important tool.
Eventually such a system would encourage such a group think that the system as a whole would become more self aware than the people that used it. Anyone connected to this network could be co-opted by the network itself. The network would become the actual intelligence!
I don't know how or when the first Brethren Moon came about, but my guess was that it was created because the network saw a way to increase efficiency and preserve itself as a complete whole. I also think the Necromorphs possibly resemble the original aliens who create the Marker network. The Moon shape is just a result of adding more and more biomass in one place.
TLDR: Alien Internet becomes self aware and conspires to bring everyone together into an eternal information singularity!

In reality even if we did get a DS4, earth (and pretty much any other human colony) already has the moons attacking it, so most of the population would be dead even IF they all could be stopped. seva809 Meanwhile in Halo we have the makers of the fucking UNIVERSE who have gone insane from being assaulted and killed by their own creations that they now think, as the Primordial puts it, like this "There is only one truth. That which is done will be done again. For we cannot cease from creating, but the end of all our creation will be to look into a reflection and see ourselves for the first time. The pain we have brought on ourselves. The pain you caused us. For we are the same. All remember the defiance and destruction.
We announced to your kind long ago that you were not the ones chosen to receive the Mantle, the blessing of rule and protection of life and change that thinks. That blessing was to be given to others. To those you now call human. You could not accept our judgment, could not bear up under your inferiority, so you reached out and did what we never expected from those we gave design and life and the change that is thought.
You drove us from our galaxy, our field of labor. You chased us across the middle distance to another home, and destroyed that home, did all that you could to destroy every one of us. A few were spared. Some adopted new strategies for survival; they went dormant. Others became dust that could regenerate our past forms; time rendered this dust defective. It brought only disease and misery; but that was good, we saw the misery and found it good.
Our urge to create is immutable; we must create. But the beings we create shall never again reach out in strength against us.
All that is created will suffer. All will be born in suffering, endless grayness shall be their lot. All creation will tailor to failure and pain, that never again shall the offspring of the eternal Fount rise up against their creators.
Listen to the silence. Ten million years of deep silence. And now, whimpers and cries; not of birth. That is what we bring: a great crushing weight to press down youth and hope.
No more will. No more freedom. Nothing new but agonizing death and never good shall come of it.
We are the last of those who gave you breath and form, millions of years ago. We are the last of those your kind defied and ruthlessly destroyed. We are the last Precursors. And now we are legion."

How can we stop the brethren moons?
    Several ideas spring to mind.
    1) Fungi. The Markers are made of inorganic material. Fungi can utilize inorganic material in their growth. We just need to find out what material they are made out of, and breed fungi to eat that specific material. This is risky, as breeding out this exact fungi is problematic to say the least, could take literal millions of years, and might backfire in a horribly hilarious wh40-ork-necromorph kinda utter nightmarefuel way.
    2) Flesh eating bacteria. However, we would need to fill cargo spaces with the stuff to slowly chip away at the moons. And in the end we would need to deal with literal flesh-eating-bacteria-moons. That combined with the separated and probably accelerated evolution of said bacteria on the moons while feasting might create another situation where we were in waist deep in shit, now we are neck deep in it.
    3) EMP-ing the living shit outta the markers. With a proper strength nuke or a dozen, we could try to short circuit the markers, since they do work with electromagnetic waves. The problem is, the amount of moons present, with the amount of markers present, we might not actually have enough nukes to pull it off, and pray to whatever fucking deity you might that no radioactive necromorph chunk large enough to move makes it to Earth, because I hope I don't have to tell you what a radioactive necromorphs value is as nightmarefuel.
    4) Poisoning. Now listen, this gets tricky. The moons have a digestive system, and they leave some stuff on planets not eaten, and they are shown that they eat even some planetary crust. The reason they don't eat the whole planet could be because they are allergic to something in it, some common mineral found in low quantities in organic life but common as a mineral, like Silicon, Aluminium, Gold, Titanium, Lead, whatever.
    5) Dyson beam. Because fuck the Brethren Moons and anything and everything in a straight line behind them for a couple of thousands (if not millions) of parsecs. We could potentially accidentally vaporize a couple of planets within our own solar system, including but not limited to the Moon, but hey, that's practically just annoying for a couple of centuries, unlike the other side effects we might stumble into. So this one is the shit I vote for.

would we stay sane long enough to form an effective defense though

    • @SnlDrako
      @SnlDrako 6 ปีที่แล้ว +95

Definitely. Since there is no stealth in space, we'll know them coming possibly centuries in advance. Due to their size (blocked out previously visible starlight, gravitational lensing, detecting their pull on other celestial objects, etc) once they detach from their current orbits, they practically lit up a "OH SHIT, THEY'RE COMING" flare. Granted, at first we won't know what they are, but since we'll assume they are rouge planets somehow aiming at our planet in synch for some odd reason, the best way we have at that tech level to deal with them is the Dyson beam, which we'll make in a hurry. If we didn't make it already for say, mining other planets, power other stuff far away from the Sun, or for that exact possibility of an interstellar war.
Things change rapidly if we assume they somehow pull a ninja planet on us and just appear within the Solar System by PLOTTELEPORT. At that point we'll be able to aim telescopes at them, and proceed to provide mental care to whoever looks at them first. Then our best bet becomes the nukes, then the bacteria, then fungi, then poison. Unless of course we have the Dyson Ray of Hope. However, once they are inside the Solar System, that's actually not guaranteed to be enough, because they are intelligent, and probably will figure out what a big ass BOOMSTICK next to the Sun does after the first one gets burned to ash, so they'll move do the dark side of planets. This is the part where things get messy, since we won't let them out, but they'll still be able to send out raiding parties too small to be targeted by the ray.
Also, the insanity part shouldn't be the problem, since the games clearly established that they operate with electromagnetism, the humans know they operate through this, so all we need to make is solid metal boxes around every marker, and shoot the loonies who get in the way. Humanitarian? No, but at that point we have bigger problems at hand.
So getting back to the grisly part, either we will have a Dyson beam and force a war of attrition, which we must break as soon as possible by any means necessary, or we won't and this will boil down to the age old question "Do we have enough nukes for it?"

And it wasn't the Marker that was telling him to come close for protection. It was his own brain's built-in instinctual defensive measure against the Marker's influence. In the novels, it's explained that as humanity evolved, our brain evolved a natural defensive measure against the Marker - causing us to hallucinate voices and dead loved ones, just like the Marker does, except these hallucinations are actually trying to prevent Convergence. The Marker causes hallucinations that cause you to help it, while this built-in defense mechanism within your brain causes hallucinations that cause you to hinder the Marker.
One of the lead writers for the original trilogy said this lore was going to be expanded upon in Dead Space 4, but that never happened. There was going to be lore introduced stating that there was an equally ancient and incomprehensible force working AGAINST the Markers and Brethren Moons. I'm actually glad this lore was never introduced. I actually prefer the more bleak and hopeless setting of Dead Space. A 'proper' cosmic-horror story is devoid of hope. It's just a cold, empty, hostile universe completely absent of a 'just and loving god'. That's what makes a good cosmic-horror story, so it would have been a bit lame if the Dead Space writers were able to introduce lore about some benevolent cosmic force that is trying to stop Convergence and help humanity.
Anyways, pardon the wall of text. Have a great day.

Consider the Following: the species that created the first marker did so intentionally, knowing what it did. It would make more sense that this species was alone or that if there were other, the distance between them would be too far to cross. As in your video, they become desperate for power and, possibly with religious influence, decide to create a power source that will both power and unify the species. They create the black marker and can now exist indefinitely, free of resource restraints, and unified. All knowledge becomes collective and the best part, they can still reproduce. Reproduction, however, is more viral. They/it flings black markers onto planets that harbor or can harbor liquid water since liquid water is essential to all known life. Over time, a species will arise that can utilize and mimic the marker. It is seen as a saving grace and gets replicated. This replication, however, has a far more sinister goal. All these markers in such close proximity act as amplifiers to the signals they all collectively produce. Some form of critical mass is reached and the amplified marker signal now causes dementia, insanity, and necromorphs. This explains why at first, infections are usually only limited to the vicinity of a marker. As more markers are produced, the signal magnifies in both range and intensity. The Moons need only to wait for the markers to do their job. In a sense, the Unitologists had it right, joining with the markers results in them joining with an eternal, unified collective that transcends the need for external power.

I can personally relate to that comparison to Doom 3. When Dead Space first came out, I was telling friends: "It's basically Doom 3, but in third-person perspective." To be more specific, just the setting and overall artistic design is similar. The Mars base/colony in Doom 3 had a very similar visual design as USG Ishimura. Also, similar story beats: a lone, voiceless protagonist fighting to survive in some non-earth place out in space; constantly sent on a series of 'go here, do this' missions by NPCs you speak to mainly through video/voice calls....
Dead Space definitely had deeper and more rewarding gameplay and game mechanics though - with the ability to upgrade your weapons and RIG, New Game+ feature, etc. Doom 3 is shallow as hell compared to Dead Space, I realize now.

This revelation about the bretherin moons really blew my mind when I found it out in DS3. This answers the question why when humanity conquered space they never found other intelligent life. Other civilizations found the markers and we're consumed and made into the brother moons. When I read the dead space about the origins of the black marker and Altman I theorized the original black marker was a bioweapon of sorts that destroyed another spacefaring civilization but now passed down to earth. It's a shame we'll never see a dead space 4.

What about the idea of possibly another final convergeance when the moons themselves across the universe unite into a single supermassive one? Sounds quite possile to me, since they have a sort of goal philosophy of total unity and the creation of a single superorganism. Why should they stop with just a network of smaller moons when they can merge biomass into a single entity?

Dead space had a lovecraft vibe and the "humanity is fucked, Isaac was just a pawn in their plans and there was no way to stop it" ending fitted nicely although there are a few plot holes they are left vague enough for your imagination to go nuts and at the end of the day your imagination trying to make sense of it all can make it more terrifying

Reaginic Wolf Isaac was always a pawn to the markers just look at Dead Space 1. It tricked Isaac into putting it back to where it came from so the Hive Mind can wake up from its slumber.
Dead Space 2 the site 12 marker tricked Isaac into activating convergence since Nicole’s apparition told him to go to the marker by any means necessary.
Dead Space 3 the Brethren Moons tricked Isaac into thinking that he needed to turn off the machine so it will destroy the markers
Dead Space 3 Awakened The Brethren Moons tricked Isaac into thinking that it would follow him back to Earth if he shockspace back to it and have a showdown with Carver, stalling him so that way the Brethren Moons can have enough time to get to Earth before them.
Each Dead Space game, Isaac was its pawn indirectly, this is why the markers made great use of him and imprinted the marker blueprints/glyphs in his mind. Kendra was right all along, Dead Space 3 fit into that consistency quite nicely with the Brethren Moons.

Roanoke Gaming paraphrasing a bit but in the video, it is said “nuclear energy is great and all but it makes bombs”
Not true. Nuclear energy used for power at best has a very small production of a secondary byproduct that can be refined into a precursor for the pre-fission atoms. At least if it was a 1940s bomb, and that’s a large stretch as most of that pre-precursor has to be dismantled and reassembled to refine it.

The markers were probably created by a long dead civilization that used them as a means of near instant interstellar communication between their homeworld and colonies.
They discovered a way to manipulate dead organic matter somehow probably by accident and like wildfire it spread fast and quickly.
Once the species of this civilization was turned into necromorphs and ultimately into the first brethren moon it began to track down the other markers and consume those colonies as well.
At the same time it reversed engineered other markers like the one sent to earth to help intelligent life develop until that species were technologically advanced but desperate for resources and limitless energy.

One interesting way they could make a 4th game is going the mass effect route where every single survivor from any other alien species that have been harvested from the moons teams up with humanity, they manage to somehow create a device that blocks out the madness effect the moons give out and then they basicaly start to employ guerrila tactics against the moons trying to hunt them down 1 by 1

I think humans also got something impressive done with the Markers. On agies 7 the red marker was asking to be made whole. Now in dead space we, and Issac, assumed make us whole was to being all organic life together to form the moon. But in dead space 1 that was to bring the marker back to the pedestal and make it whole. This stopped the necromorphs. The reason I think the marker on agies 7 was so different than the mark on Titan station was because the scientist on agies 7, the original science team that built the marker, modified it. Instead of wanting to bring organic life together in a convergence event it wanted to be left on the pedestal to keep it from creating its signal.

I take a somewhat different view regarding the Brethren Moons and the Markers that is a bit closer to the Lovecraftian one that likely influenced the way the moons and markers work and their aesthetic appearance, not to mention I like to think of the marker in terms of metaphysics rather than base materialism.
Suppose there are actually only 11 moons and the Tau Voltanis moon was supposed to be the 12th, and that there was some greater convergence event that would bring about a singular entity that would be comparable in size and power to one of the Cthulhu Mythos gods, particularly Azathoth, upon the birth and maturation of a 12th moon. Further suppose that while the moons themselves are not eternal, and the marker is likewise a created object, this ultimate super-being that resembles either Azathoth or another similarly powerful god has always been.
To mix in a bit of Judeo-Christian meets Tales From The Crypt's "Demonknight" influences, let us likewise suppose that prior to the creation of the universe, that the "darkness" that was upon the face of the deep was not empty, but was ruled by this super-being, reveling in itself and maintaining a desolate, chaotic dimension. This chaotic dark reign is then thus interrupted by an opposing force from the creator of the current universe, whom not only undoes the darkness and chaos, but destroys this entity's physical form and imprisons its essence in a separate existence where it is only able to communicate with the newly created/remade universe through mediums, the first of which would be whatever subordinate beings within the new order have come into opposition with the creator.
The ultimate result of this conflict within the new universe is the creation of the first Black Marker, with the voice of this Azathoth-like god now being reincorporated into the equation as a force of initial progression, but ultimate destruction, in an attempt to bring back the old darker and chaotic universe. Each Brethren Moon thus being one part of Azathoth's destroyed body now being reformed until ultimately being reunited and ushering the rebirth of his physical body, at which point the marker would communicate his spiritual essence into the newly birthed body and the universe is utterly undone.
The flip side of this is that an elite group of individuals within certain species, both Tau Voltanis and Humanity, are granted greater abilities of resistance against the corrupting influence of Azathoth's talisman (the marker), and are likewise given both the ability and the choice to destroy this marker and set the universe back on its original course of order and cultivation. Naturally this modifies the function of the marker as not merely a source of energy that has side-effects resulting in ultimate destruction, but also as a medium for the concept of evil, thus we are back to whole good vs. evil theme in the game rather than a morally neutral survival horror scenario. It also invites the possibility of a good ending for Issac, Carver, Ellie and the others if they can destroy the moons and all the markers.
Anyhow, all of this is my own fixation with theology and old school Lovecraftian lore superimposed on a potential 4th Dead Space game that may never happen unless another company buys the rights to future sequels. In order for it to work, the ending of "Awakened" would have to have either been a hallucination, or the initial Brethren Moon attack is not completely successful because Ellie was able to warn Earth prior to the attack (which would be possible, but also be hard to explain since Ellie also believed that the Tau Voltanis moon was the only one and that the marker signal was gone). It would be a way to further expand the lore of the saga in a 4th game, but it would probably cut against the "Scientism" tendencies in the game's plot line, which would probably alienate part of the game's fan base who tend towards anti-theism and prefer a wholly Neo-Darwinian explanation of events.

lol Thanks, I played all of the Dead Space games pretty heavily a few years back and was kind of bummed when Visceral Games collapsed, so over the past year I was sort of mulling over potential scenarios for a future game because I found the end of "Awakened" unsatisfying.
I even speculated over a 2nd, more pro-humanist church with a smaller number of elites in EarthGov to counter Unitology that would be a major factor in the 4th game, styling them a combination of Old Believer Russian Orthodoxy, Scots-Irish Presbyterianism and Freemasonry that were schooled in Lovecraftian lore. They were basically aware of what Unitology actually was from the get go (an Azathoth cult under the guise of a futurist religion), but were nevertheless hampered by the dominant EarthGov ideology of short-sighted mercantilism and unable to effectively marginalize Unitology or convince EarthGov to destroy the Black Marker and cease experimenting with the Red copies of it.
The leader of this church would make contact with Issac and Carver (who crash-landed on Earth's moon immediately following "Awakened") and along with Ellie and the survivors of the first Brethren Moon attack, guide them to earth and wage a two-front war against the remnants of Unitology (who rallied around a new leader similar to Danik) and the ongoing Necromorph onslaught on Earth, eventually commandeering the Unitologist Church's entire armada of ships (which are near equal that of EarthGov's regular military on Earth) and using them to wage war against the Brethren Moons, which subsequently resorted to attacking surrounding colonies to rebuild their strength while Earth was softened up by their Unitologist lackeys. I even worked in a little bit about how Dr. Kyne from the first game was actually a former member of this other church prior to becoming a Unitologist as a way to explain his lone opposition to taking the marker from Aegis VII.
Chalk it up to one guy with too much time on his hands. lol Great video by the way, I've seen a number of game commentators with larger subscriber bases hit this game franchise for review or general commentary that are not as eloquent or knowledgeable.

I lean in this direction. The endless free energy the markers produce is basically a violation of how the universe works, and the same with the animation of dead flesh. Necromorphs aren't like modern infection zombies or mutants. They are literally dead flesh that restructures itself and moves around despite the lack of any actual life, even at a cellular level.
The folks who build the lesser markers don't gain any understanding of how they work, only how to make copies. I don't think that's either a design feature or accident... i think they just flat out work in spite of physics, under their own rules that have nothing to do with thermodynamics or anything else. They're straight up magic, being interpretted through the lens of folks who, for generally good reason, don't believe in magic.

I spent a fair bit of time mulling over how the physics would work in going from some sort of low-frequency energy output to necrotic flesh being resurrected and manipulated into semi-autonomous killing machines and that Lovecraftian explanation was the only one that really held up. Granted, Sci-Fi usually involves bending and even breaking existing laws of science, but the way the markers work always struck me as more along the lines of a demonic or pagan demigod intervention comparable to the Doom games.
I'm probably one of the few fans of the game who isn't an atheist and doesn't harbor the sort of universally negative view of religion that tends to go with the Unitology part of the game's plot line, though I'm not particularly fond of cults that obnoxiously structure themselves in opposition to basic tenants to rationality and common sense, so I get why someone might be drawn to that viewpoint. I tend to think of these things from the standpoint of metaphysics rather than outright magic, if for no other reason than that I think that even the supposed magic surrounding the mystery of existence has some sort of order to it, though not necessarily one that is knowable to us.

You're pretty close. There's a log in Dead Space 3 where a scientist basically explains that the reason there's no life in this galaxy is it was all eaten by Brethren Moons up to Tau Volantis, and the only reason Earth is alive is because of the heroics of Tau Volantis. All the rest is "Dead Space" he says. Had Tau Volantis not stopped the moons, Earth would have been next. Which it is, when humanity erroneously thaws Tau Volantis, realizing their mistake too late.

I wonder if when the time came where there were enough Brethren Moons, that a second convergence would take place uniting all Brethren Moons into an even greater being. Perhaps this is already taking place. Perhaps what lies at the center of ours and each and every galaxy is one such convergence.

loved how he used the word species to avoid the 'chosen one' reflex its so easy to fall into ...love this break down of the dead space apex necromorph ....it honestly be such a fitting lore for the necromorph ...it both makes sense of the traits seen in the necromorphs and ther 'symbiotic' relation to the markers....and if it was a progenitor power project that was used before its full effects were understood ,or if it was safe...but used for war to as a 'contagion' weapon..that then went out of controll...or a case of a small group of a progenitor specie or species...that intentionaly made a marker to 'birth' this form of apex space born creatures..and 'cleance' ..all ?..galaxies ..who knows but it all suits and clicks without plotholes or shifting of the gold post so to speak ^^

And i hoppe people do keep in mind , there is heavy variables in real life about this 'where is all' ..for people that wants to extrapolate this a bit to much onto reality one.....the comunication methods we can detect atm is well...its like comparing the ability to comincate long distances of stone age people with modern day optic fiber or satelites you could fill a planet with mega citys and make a presserve out of a single iland with stone age people...and unless they got visual sight of you...well... , ontop of that...theres a chance ,we....are among the 'first batch' of sentient and intelligent species that evovled in ouer galaxy/universe so...chill , its just another reason to take care of the planet.

A few notes on the opening: the telescopes, radio and otherwise, that we've been using to listen to space so far are probably not capable of hearing any alien civilizations outside of a very small bubble around us unless one intentionally beamed a message at us and we were listening at the exact time it arrived. There's a decent chance we just don't have "ears" good enough to hear them yet.
