First, the locals would make the marker sign and call it "the devil's tail" because they associated it with the feel-bads from the marker. Another detail is that Altman was part of a survey crew working for a mining company (name escapes me, but it's in the third game). When he found the marker it had no effect on him, it did however turn his crew nuts. One tried to kill Altman, who in turn killed the crewman. One went nuts at the little town and self terminated, and another survived but was still affected by the marker. When they came upon the marker, the government at the time (wasn't Earthgov quite yet) was reading all the reports and captured Altman after his crew was killed. Altman actually saw the marker for what it was and wanted to destroy it. The government then trapped Altman in with the necromorphs, and then the nutso crewman who survived went on to found Unitology with the government feeding him Altman's story as a messiah. The government wanted the marker initially as a weapon, but found the unlimited energy it emitted. They found that, depending on your innate intelligence, one of three things would happen. If you were a dumb-dumb, you went crazy and started killing people. Average intelligence folks would hallucinate and become paranoid. High intelligence folks would see the marker language and be compelled to make more markers. Isaac falls into the third group. So Unitology, in essence is a government cover up of a biological weapon that ended up backfiring a couple hundred years later when they were overthrown by Unitologists.
You got somethings right and somethings wrong here. It is true that Altman wanted to destroy the marker, but wrong about the government killing him, the government had nothing to do with it. That nutso crew killed him to form unitology for their own religious beliefs, not because the government ordered it.
Altman escaped several outbreaks several times actually. The whole world knew about the marker because Altman had left the Yucatan and gave a presentation in DC about it. Altman would be captured there, escape, and try to destroy it back at the Yucatan. People were actually praising him before he died, which he didn't like. Altman's cause of death is still unknown but we know who killed him. It was markoff and Steven's.

A bit like Cyberpsychosis in Cyberpunk world where you eventualy succomb to it if you lose to many humanity points (in the paper roleplay game) by replacing parts of your body with implants.
It might correlate with the persons trauma. Isaac in the first game didn't have any severe trauma (until the end), but he was suffering from the illusions the moment he stepped on the Ishimura (I can't remember what the earliest hallucination is but I vaguely remember seeing nicole before they established it was her). Carver had a traumatic background prior to the 3rd game. But those who did manage to survive the events of the games and movies also went through these internal conflicts where they were trying to regain control of their mind. Take strauss for example, in the movie he was losing his shit before he even went down to the planet. After killing his family he had a moment where he gained some control back. Everyone else that went insane never did. Possibly coming to terms with certain things helps guard your mind from the markers effects, but if you don't come to terms with those hang ups you end up like the captain. Even Dr. Kyne was surprisingly sane until the end.
When I saw this remake, you were the first person to come to mind, and I was wondering if you were going to remake any of your old videos. Only because they are so amazing, I have watched them multiple times
@@RoanokeGaming here’s a little tip: if you’re going to use the stasis module to get a better look at them again, avoid the upgraded version, it’ll do damage overtime shredding the skin & muscle tissue down to the bone th-cam.com/video/NtctKikDmYo/w-d-xo.html
5:43 You were right for the most part but it wasn’t Altman who you’re talking about, it was another researcher who infected himself after seeing a hallucination and then ran to the Marker realizing there was some sort of Dead Space field around it, Altman was killed by the government who wanted to use him as a Martyr, they left him in a room with a brute with nothing but a spoon to protect himself
One of my favorite parts of this remake of Dead Space is that there's hidden messages throughout the chapter where you approach the Marker for the first time. Unitologist script, appearing in the form of missions that come up and are then quickly listed completed (as well as, y'know, every wall and surface on the crew deck anyways), hardly appearing for more than a few seconds. One simply says 'Turn it off', a clear reference to DS3, and the description of the mission is the same phrase some few times over. The other is titled 'Make us whole again', with the somewhat ominous description of 'You feel your worlds collapsing to a center. We are the center. We will be whole.', which I believe is pretty good evidence for the theory I've long since had that the Moons, entities formed by convergence, intend to undergo convergence for creatures of their own scale as well once they gain enough from humanity, and become a single, incomprehensibly huge entity comprised of everything from the galaxy.
When you mentioned the higher-dimensional theory for marker/moons, it actually made me think: what if the whole convergence isn't even malevolent from the perspective of higher-dimensional influencers? After all, assuming higher order of existence, well, exists, it may be incomprehensibly different. For them, unity may be the next step of evolution / maturation in a completely normal way, and death as well - only another state of existence, not the end. So when they see feeble 3-dimentinals trying to siphon some energy just to survive, they decided those bros needed a bit if help. Unfortunately, too little research was done and it did not account for the massive biochemistry and mental differences. Kind of like if aliens saw some humans suffering in pain and thought "yo, bro, pain is overrated, lemme just remove those nervous tissue in ur body and teeth, problem solved" but on a grander scale. That is, assuming the interference was even from sentient species. Markers may have just siphoned some n-dimentional syphilis from out beyond that is seen as necro-virus in 3D and the higher D's are assumed as marker radiation.
I found out years ago when i first played dead space orig that artists who designed the necromorphs and other creatures were based from real dead people crashed from accidents, bodies bent and discolated from the impact and all its grotesqueness. I always got goosebumps knowing it while playing.
The Markers in Dead Space remind me of the Totem object from the 2000s movie ‘Supernova’. It gave off a resonant wave that enhanced those around it with no halt to physical or emotional limits. Eventually getting everyone so hyped up with no self control they wipe each other out. Kind of like preemptive frick you guys from another Galaxy…
Fair Warning ‘Supernova’ was a terrible movie, it had its moments. But also if you have an Object that Amplifies all Physical and Emotional trait’s… Libido was the main focus in the 2000s… ending has a good twist though :D
One thing that always interests me was brought up in 2, and it's very minor but i wonder whether we fought nicole as a necromorph like was she changed or was she a corpes or just simply added to the biomass
@@RoanokeGaming realistically he probably did and sadly probably didn’t even know. It makes why she looks so perfect in issac’s hallucinations that much creepier in my opinion.
Probably 90% chance fought at the medical area one of the slashers. Then again 10% chance whatever she injected herself with killed or poisoned her blood. So she probably became part of some biomass.
And this is why I absolutely love the dead space series because you brought up an idea of this series that whatever higher being that was influencing the whole thing has a motive, yet we could never truly understand what it wants or what its goals are with its insidious plan, that is truly terrifying to me
@Roanoke Gaming Oh, I'm definitely looking forward to you covering more DS in the future, too! Let's hope EA doesn't shit the bed on this franchise again lol 🤞
With the force gun's ability to strip away layers of flesh to expose internal workings, we can now go much more into depth on how exacrlt these horrendous abominations function! Delightful!@@RoanokeGaming
I always figured the origins of the markers/Necromorphs were extra dimensional. It’s very reminiscent of Event horizon and the concepts shown in that film definitely inspired dead space.
There's a tabletop RPG called Cthulhutech where humanity unlocks the secrets of unlimited energy with a device that taps into a different dimension. Of course as the name implies bad things and insanity follow soon after. The Marker being something similar makes a lot of sense, the energy they emit has to be coming from somewhere and Dead Space 3 at least implied the Markers were primarily receivers from the Brethern Moons.
Roanoke, as much as I love your movie content (my inner science-nerd runs in little circles squealing whenever I see a new upload), your Dead Space content is what got me to subscribe to you, even though I never played it. Great to see it starting up again :)
We've come full circle. I started watching your channel over your original Dead Space videos, and now, all these years later, here we are again. It's been a fun ride, my dude. I wish you all the continued success in the future. Do more weird medical videos tho
That's actually a brilliant theory, it might explain what Ben Wanat said about dead space 4, that while there's a way to escape the necromorphs, we might regret it, that it's better to stay with the devil you know. What could be worse than space horrors? Interdimensional horrors of course
Minor quibble, but Altman wasn't the one who inadvertently infected himself. It was one of his colleagues, Grote Guthe, who was the one studying the necromorph tissue sample from an infected creature living in the Gulf of Mexico. He had discovered the Marker signal could be interpreted as a DNA sequence and, during an attempt to stop a Marker hallucination, accidentally injected the tissue sample while hallucinating it as a sedative. Altman was a geophysicist who was mostly kept away from Marker/necromorph research except in cases where his resistance to its effects were necessary. He died in an arena-style execution between himself (armed with a spoon) vs a lab-grown brute-class necromorph. Beyond that, this was an excellent video and I definitely believe your theory of the Brethren Moons being higher dimensional beings brought here by the Markers, rather than their original creators.
It’s nice to see Dead Space back on the channel, I’ve never played Dead Space (I was too much of a wuss lol) till this remake and who knew that Roanoke was in a way preparing us for it with the whole playlist. Fantastic game too, I love it! And to Roanoke, years later those videos still hold up today to rewatch, awesome work man 👍
It is because it is them. Once necromorphs essentially die or become incapped rather or the marker steps up the next level most of them become part of the biomass. Literally terraforming the area with flesh and bones
I'm still on the fence of how I feel about it, but I think the remake makes Nichole being a hallucination much more obvious them the original game. All of her logs point to her hating the church, yet whenever you meet her in game she does the whole "make us whole" shtick. On top of whenever you talk to her the screen gets all wavey, Isaac starts to grab at his head like he's having a headache. On top of the rest of the crew stating that they are seeing things. Like Hammond seeing Chen. Kendra seeing her brother, science guy seeing his wife, science gal from hydroponics seeing her husband Jacob, makes it heavily imply Isaac should also be seeing things. With Nichole being the only thing we really can coke to a conclusion to. I felt like the original deadspace made it much less obvious
@Roanoke Gaming I agree! I love deadspace 1 and 2! I hope with the success of this remake, hopefully they will do the whole trilogy and give DP3 the overhaul it deserves :)
I feel like it's fine for a remake of a game that's almost 20 years old. Especially now that most people going into Dead Space know the Markers are cognito hazards that make people kill themselves. Also the chapters still spell out "NICOLE IS DEAD" like they did in the first game.
Lol everyone knows the twist so it would've been very boring if they went that route. Nicole being a completely different person was actually more shocking than the original.
The higher dimension theory is interesting. Each brethren moon could basically be just an avatar for another being to interact with this universe. Destroy the moon and you basically kick one from the lobby who now get's sent out to buy beer while his friends keep playing until a new avatar is made.
I read a theory that the marker is a malevolent "thing". Insted of being and idol for something bigger it can act on its own in limited ways. When Nicole asks it to stop the outbreak it's main objective is to get back down to the planet or destroy itself trying. I think that's why it manipulated Isaac and Elizabeth the way it did. But hey that's just a theory, a game theory !
Sad that the "Twinkle Twinkle little star" intro would get copyrighted in to the ground now a days, other wise imagine a remaster Roanoke Gaming Dead Space intro
I feel like the Red Markers being more aggressive could be explained by the fact that they are new. The Black Marker is very old and as such, could have dwindled in it's capacity to perform. This is supported by the fact that in Dead Space 3, you find multiple deactivated Markers on Tau Volantis that are over 2 million years old and don't do anything. The Red Marker on Aegis 7 and Titan Station were performing very well and the Sprawl Marker even started early convergence before Isaac stopped it.
That would make sense but if you think about it the black marker would be over 65 million years old (since it ended the dinosaurs), way older than most on Tau Volantis, and was still active.
You GOTTA be feeling the same type of anxious happiness I am! Dead Space is back, and HOPEFULLY, with more installments that do justice. Also, is Altman's end at the end of "Martyr" not Canon? Because I thought he wasn't infected, but was executed by the Government via being trapped in a cell with a brute, only given a spoon for defence. I still remember the horrible bit about a researcher being fooled by the marker into injecting himself with infected cells...
Take our hands that we may feed you, take our eyes that we may see you, take our minds that we may serve you; we will live forever... Essentially the viewers to the content creator
I love that one video you made where you explain or speculate, that the Markers took over the entire galaxy/universe and we're the only one in the universe that remain. That sent chills down my spine.
Dead Space is still one of the kings of cosmic horror. The concept that the only reason we are still alive is because we haven't been spotted yet by something wiping out the entire universe just hits different.
if you look at it from another perspective, something placed OG black markers on planets that COULD harbor sentient life, knowing that they'd eventually activate and endlessly replicate them and beckon brother moons humans aren't surviving because they've skirted a cosmic predator in a vast empty space, they're alive because they haven't matured enough to be harvested as ripe cattle in the fenced pasture of an ancient being's making - up until now.
I love the concept of humans being sapient a result of some lifeform manipulating our evolution for its own benefit, such as the markers and classic old lavos from chrono trigger, because as far as we know, it's not impossible for it to be true.
Your original Dead Space videos were how I found this channel a couple years back. I was really hoping you'd take the opportunity with the remake to revisit Dead Space again. I can't wait for this series!
Agreed I remember reading that in an interview OG devs said Ellie would be the MC of DS4 along with (not giving away everything because EA) dealing with the moons or surviving in some way but at a high cost. Also about repairing some ship and building upon it. Sadly DS got canned by EA after 3 but that was EA's own greed. After how DS1 remake was received hopefully they: 1. Any remakes of 2 or 3 or extraction etc if multiplayer or online dlc is not tied to the launcher as origin died we cannot connect anymore easily to servers or stuff like ration seals. 2. DS4 is greenlit. We get an ending to the cliffhanger after DS3 awakening. 3. New graphic novel or animation probably around hartman.
Very cool that you have proper outros now, it always bothered me in the older videos that they would just suddenly cut off in the middle of a sentence. Another great video, man, don't be afraid to keep doing dead space, I don't think anyone would blame you for re- covering your favorite game ^.^
Even if you end up just repeating yourself in different words. it is still interesting to hear you explain how the different necromorph works and such. also in the remake the bacteria was explained a little bit
Honestly I have two theories on what the markers could be, one it’s some type of species that uses the markers as a reproduction method and two the marker’s are likely an old ancient Bioweapon that grew out of its programming and assimilated there creators.🤔🐱
Also I read one more theory - Markers being not an ancient weapon, but a form of technological singularity, that was used by its creators to transcend to another - ultimate, from their point of view - form of existence. Something like Catalyst/Reapers from Mass Effect 🤷♂️
Isn't it basically confirmed in the third game that the first theory you mentioned is the true answer? The Brethren Moons use the Markers to begin a necro outbreak which will then cause a Convergence event and give birth to a new Brethren Moon.
I always compared the "Moons" to the "Reapers" in mass effect... Dead space & mass effect have similar enemies, in concept, as they both let life happen to return for harvest... Altman be praised.
I always imagined the Brethren Moons to be both individual hiveminds as well as the extended limbs of a greater being, given that the death of the half-formed moon seems to "Wake" them up, whether or not they are the whole being or not however isn't something I can really guess.
Nothing better than Roanoke coming back to Dead Space after all this time. Couldn't help but binge all the old DS content soon as I finished up the remake. Looking forward to necromorph morphology updates!
I really like your theory for how the marker came to be, it kinda reminds me of scp 3125 in a way. Scp 3125 is like if the marker was a concept instead of a physical monument. The major difference is 3125 annihilates anyone who becomes aware of it, along with family members and close friends of the individual. However, 3125 only does this to conceal itself from anyone that could stop it from entering the prime reality (our dimension). Once it manifests in our dimension it would reconstruct reality and those within it to something incomprehensible.
It's great to see Dead Space back on the channel. As the reason I even found your channel years ago, I hope that you and the remake give us new content for the foreseeable future.
Reminds me of why there is caution about meeting spirits especially from Exorcist. Or the Ouija boards thing. The spirit could be deceiving you as though they appear to be angels, they might be demons in disgust. Or in Ouija boards, even if you did contact a spirit, it might not be the spirit you are looking for. But something worst.
Hold on. Didn't Altman survive the experience and later get captured by the organization that would later become Earthgov? I've read Deadspace Martyr multiple times and I distinctly recall him surviving out of the underwater military base that retrieved the black Marker from the bottom of a huge lake.
i watched this and then proceed to rewatch the whole dead space playlist again and christ, i cant believe how far roanoke had come from five to six minutes of video to full on almost and hour of breakdown videos now. its great
When I first heard this game was coming out I got really excited because I loved your videos on the older games. In fact, one of them I forget, which one was actually how I found your channel.
You really make learning a lot of fun. Thanks for all your work you put into these videos. Like I rewatched your last of us videos and it was really cool to see how you thought the infection would of worked.
Roaknoke fam Altman didn't infects himself a researcher named guffman had a hallucination of his mother and tried to sedate himself but injected himself with the corruption and he was later killed by earthgov. Altman died to being killed by a mutated corpse made of other people because high ranking military officers started drinking the unitology Kool-aid and needed Altman to be a mayter to make people believe in unitology . Altman was chosen because he could be close to the maker because he wasn't effected like most people he worked with to dive down to see the black marker.

I really love Dead Space lore, but it's one of those lores where for every definitive answer you get, 99 more questions pop out. Talks about dimensions and the egg or the chicken is good, but really, what are the odds that someone in the dev team actually thought of that lol. It's kinda like George RR Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire. There there millions of cool places and billions of old tales in the series' lore, but you will never have any actual confirmation about any of those things, only speculation with a relatively low chance of any of it being true, just like in this case.
Brooo it's so good to have you back on the dead space vids!! I used to watch all your dead space videos exile working back in the day. Can't wait to have more In the future.
I love when you visit the science of strange things, especially "higher dimensions" makes me wonder about if we ever try to get energy from Dark Energy or Dark Matter would there be just as much discussion about what the dangers would be or would anyone care as long as we get the "free energy" (well free for the corporations as they would of course sell it to us for a huge profit)
Does this video *Specifically* talks about the Origins of Black Markers as they were or are the truly alien in their origin. As far as we know all red markers are reverse engineering like they do on area 51 and area 52 ufos lol

Hi Roanoke. Here is an idea for ya Berserker hypothesis, where markers are simply built by different civilization to ensure noone can endanger them. And brother moons are simple compex drones that are doing the job
Nearly 1 year ago, there was a french guy, 88 years old, with a typical, french problam in a hospital: He had a 20cm long, 6cm diameter granade from WW1 in his backdoor. True story.

You were right for the most part but it wasn’t Altman who you’re talking about, it was another researcher who infected himself after seeing a hallucination and then ran to the Marker realizing there was some sort of Dead Space field around it, Altman was killed by the government who wanted to use him as a Martyr, they left him in a room with a brute with nothing but a spoon to protect himself
Yup. He's probably forgotten. Who reads the book for information you already knew?
Well that sounds pretty interesting actually
Fair Warning ‘Supernova’ was a terrible movie, it had its moments.
But also if you have an Object that Amplifies all Physical and Emotional trait’s… Libido was the main focus in the 2000s… ending has a good twist though :D
Tho it seems that the movie is not good. The concept that ppl are "hyped up" so much they lose control is funny as hell.
Supernova's totem was like the Star Trek Wraith of Kain's Genesis terraforming boom it is a fun slasher horror.
One thing that always interests me was brought up in 2, and it's very minor but i wonder whether we fought nicole as a necromorph like was she changed or was she a corpes or just simply added to the biomass
I feel like we probably did, we definitely melted her when we had the marker destroyed lol
@@RoanokeGaming Do you reckon 2 will get a remake considering the success of this remake?
@@RoanokeGaming realistically he probably did and sadly probably didn’t even know. It makes why she looks so perfect in issac’s hallucinations that much creepier in my opinion.
Probably 90% chance fought at the medical area one of the slashers. Then again 10% chance whatever she injected herself with killed or poisoned her blood. So she probably became part of some biomass.
@turtlemaster 5000 or maybe Mercer did some experiments on her?
And this is why I absolutely love the dead space series because you brought up an idea of this series that whatever higher being that was influencing the whole thing has a motive, yet we could never truly understand what it wants or what its goals are with its insidious plan, that is truly terrifying to me
Just finished my first play through. They expanded so much. Those side missions really go into it
It's gotta be a cool feeling to get back to dead space after all this time. This is what got me hooked on your channel❤

I appreciate that man! Thank you for watching and I am glad to be back!
Yah and even then they took her face and just put it on another body, still for me though 10/10 game
And in hindsight, it wasn't impossible to gather how nicole was dead in the first place tbh. When she appears 'in person' its ultra fucking sus.
Agree
"mouse in a grain silo". what a superb and terrifying analogy.
I'm late to the party! I just picked up a copy of DEAD SPACE REMAKE finally! Love your channel bud keep making those awesome videos 🤜🤛
I always thought the original black marker was like a baby Brethren Moon and becomes a part of a Brethren Moon when fully formed.
I remember watching your first Necromorphology videos way back at the start of your channel, nice to have Dead Space back on the menu.
Sad that the "Twinkle Twinkle little star" intro would get copyrighted in to the ground now a days, other wise imagine a remaster Roanoke Gaming Dead Space intro
Yah, which I always though it was public domain but....CORPORATISM!
I really like what they did with the Dead Space remake and how they subtly retconned some stuff and added new lore. It's made it feel like a new game

@@RoanokeGaming No problem. Make us whole and whatnot
I love that one video you made where you explain or speculate, that the Markers took over the entire galaxy/universe and we're the only one in the universe that remain. That sent chills down my spine.
Dead Space is still one of the kings of cosmic horror. The concept that the only reason we are still alive is because we haven't been spotted yet by something wiping out the entire universe just hits different.
if you look at it from another perspective, something placed OG black markers on planets that COULD harbor sentient life, knowing that they'd eventually activate and endlessly replicate them and beckon brother moons
humans aren't surviving because they've skirted a cosmic predator in a vast empty space,
they're alive because they haven't matured enough to be harvested as ripe cattle in the fenced pasture of an ancient being's making - up until now.
I can't wait to see where the game goes from here
Motive seems like it wants to move ahead with Dead Space 4 after the not just warm, but White hot reception with Dead Space Remake, Im all for it
Agreed
I remember reading that in an interview OG devs said Ellie would be the MC of DS4 along with (not giving away everything because EA) dealing with the moons or surviving in some way but at a high cost. Also about repairing some ship and building upon it.
Sadly DS got canned by EA after 3 but that was EA's own greed. After how DS1 remake was received hopefully they:
Even if you end up just repeating yourself in different words. it is still interesting to hear you explain how the different necromorph works and such. also in the remake the bacteria was explained a little bit
a new Roanoke Video about Deadspace feels like coming home from a very VERY long trip
Honestly I have two theories on what the markers could be, one it’s some type of species that uses the markers as a reproduction method and two the marker’s are likely an old ancient Bioweapon that grew out of its programming and assimilated there creators.🤔🐱
I like the second theory, considering the Brethren Moons are giant masses of dead flesh and rock.
Thats actually a good way of thinking about it. I like that second theory
@@Lileatona honestly that’s a really good theory.😺

Or in Ouija boards, even if you did contact a spirit, it might not be the spirit you are looking for. But something worst.
Good morning my dear friend💖Fantastic gameplay. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice weekend
