@@SMALLOW1512 I've heard that Horikoshi is a HUGE fan of drawing hands, which is why his work features hands so prominently beyond almost any other manga. (Overhaul, AFO, Shigaraki, Deku etc.) so it wouldn't really make much sense for Horikoshi to HATE drawing hands, if he WILLINGLY creates characters, storybeats, and a plot that revolves around hands. I assume it was some other author who hate hands (ESPEICALLY considering how breathtakingly good Horikoshi is at drawing hands too)

I’m also starting to see a trend with media made in one country gaining inspiration and being influenced by another being very well regarded or popular. MHA and CSM taking off and being inspired by ‘MURICAN entertainment. As well as Canada with Scott pilgrim being inspired by anime and games (especially nintendo games), some GOW games with some of the action being inspired by some over the top Japanese games, and even movies like last wish and spiderverse having some similarities to the action in anime and mostly being stylized after American and some Japanese comics

To all the "haters" I would just say: try to sit for 15-20 hours drawing and thinking about a thing. For years. Anyone who had put their everything into something knows not to bash someone else´s effort through cheap hater comments. Also, this man failed so many times before becoming big... others would have given up halfway. What makes Horikoshi remarkable is his willpower to reach his goal in highest possible quality. With so many characters cramped into such a huge story, there´s no wonder some aspects are not that well done. It was not humanly possible to keep the story branching out forever and give each character enough time, just to make everything perfect - and on a tight weekly basis. I am glad someone is praising his artwork like this and points out the most important thing - the art is over the top and deserves nothing but respect.

i feel like the thing that helps the manga be alot easier to read is the same thing that make some of the fights in the anime kinda underwhelming, you take a manga like jjk for example and theres alot of action from page to page which ultimately translates alot better to an anime, meanwhile mha tends to focus alot more on big massive swings and attacks that sometimes take up pages all on their own. leading to much less interesting direction for the anime overall. though i dont think this is the only reason i think it might play some part in it.

Great video! Horikoshi's art has always been spectacular and his use of expressions and shading is next level for a near weekly mangaka. With that being said I do still prefer the anime honestly.
The art direction and atmosphere is absolutely weaker and less consistent, but for me the music and voice acting brings the story to life in a way that makes it even more enjoyable to experience.
Plus, the actual character design and animation itself is still really solid overall, so there's still a lot of evident passion from Bones to adapt it. It's just a shame that the most immediately noticeable aspect can be so weak at times, since it overshadows all the fantastic aspects.

It's really bizarre to see a manga like Jujutsu Kaisen with subpar art get a premium anime adaptation from Mappa. Then we get MHA, where the manga's art is sublime, but the anime adaptation from Bones can be rather inconsistent and generally fails to capture the detail Horikoshi pours into the pages. One gets critically acclaimed solely for its animation, the other is frequently criticized for not having better animation. Jujutsu Kaisen is objectively less nuanced that MHA in just about everything, yet people seem to dislike MHA more for some reason. It's unfortunate to know people simply value the animation aspect more than everything else and will overlook the flaws a series has because animation go brr. Imagine a world where Jujutsu Kaisen didn't have Mappa animating it. Would people really value the series as much as they do now because it doesn't have any flashy animation to entertain them? MHA has its own share of flaws, but it never really deserved all the hate it got. Horikoshi definitely deserves his flowers for his hard work.

    YES! THIS!
Horikoshi is one of my biggest inspirations, and has seriously influenced so much of my recent art style. I started on the anime because I fell in love with the characters, but then I read the manga for the first time and was BLOWN AWAY. I can only hope that I can one day capture expression, little character details, and compositions the way he does. People seriously don't talk about it enough, and it frustrates me to no end

Even with my problems with the story, I've always really enjoyed the art of the mamga ever since I started reading. The most recent arc has my jaw on the floor whenever I read it in terms of visuals. Both MHA and DanDaDan are the two shounens that got me wondering how they come out WEEKLY looking this good.
On the topic of the anime, though I'm sad that the art direction and the visuals in general past season 2 are typically average, but I'm not really disappointed since making a 2 cour anime every year alongside a film for years on end is incredibly tough. Bones may be the studio behind the series, but it's specifically Bones Studio C that does both the show and movies, meaning they got to split this team up everytime they produce a season and a film at the same time. Many of the people who gave the first few seasons their interesting visual quirks like the more sharp/manga accurate character designs and stuff would go to work on the films instead. If you want to see how MHA would look at it's best, just look at the films, since they have better production which leads to more consistently higher quality animation and art direction (the BG art is such an upgrade it's crazy). And the sakuga highlights like the ones by Yutaka Nakamura are insane too.

I’ve been waiting for so long for someone to just talk about the art in Shonen Jump. Many have talked about Oda (because of course he’s worth analyzing), but Horikoshi, Tabata, Suzuki, Gege… MAN. WSJ has artists with such creativity behind the series. There’s rarely a case where the art is forgettable. I could talk about the topic for ages. And I see no video essays about these guys. Which is a shame.
Black Clover isn’t weekly anymore because the schedule messed Tabata’s health, but on god his designs, ways to draw effects and how he applies the Rule of Cool is just amazing. The Berserk and Bleach inspirations seep through the pages and the way he makes you feel emotion hits different.
Horokoshi you already talked about but you can go so much further (beyond) with it.
Suzuki is just… like watching an action film. You aren’t reading manga, you are watching Monty Oum fight scenes. I can go on about this but honestly it’s better experiencing it. Bring popcorn use a big screen.
And Gege, dude. He’s not my favorite artist but he manages to make scribbles look appealing and by scribbles I mean there isn’t a single artist in existence who doesn’t put thought onto every line drawn.
90% of the time WSJ is worth reading because of just the visuals. I always take a peek at new series. I always can learn something new.
So yeah, if you appreciate art, pick a random chapter from My Hero Academia, Black Clover, Sakamoto Days, Jujutsu Kaisen… or anything, really. I have personal recommendations for chapters with exceptional art too.

Meanwhile, my favorite panel is this simple panel where Shigaraki is reveling in the disintegration of Jaku City. It's so basic, but he just looks so FREE. I don’t feel as harsh as a lot of others when it comes to Bones. They always keep the characters consistent, and you can’t say that with Naruto, Dragon Ball, or One Piece. They add unique exclusive contents when they can. Sure, it would be great if all shows looked like AOT but that show was a product of great sacrifices.
