In an apartment I'd recommend large birdshot like #4, #2,or BB. #4 buck will penetrate 3 or 4 walls, especially if you miss, and there's a large chance of missing with a few pellets if there are 28 pellets to begin with. Not worth it in an apartment with thin walls and children everywhere.
With 00B , even with reduced velocities , the .33 pellets still have plenty of energy , and the patterning is the limiting factor . With 4B , with " barely buckshot " .24 pellets , but lots of them , the hit density will remain adequate even farther after the per pellet energy becomes marginal . As to the above concerns about apartment wall penetration , there is good news and bad news . Good news - If you hit the felons with all the pellets , 4B generally, and the low recoil in particular are unlikely to exit . The bad news - You have to make really, really sure not to miss .

Another high quality, informative presentation by Mr. Harrell and his crew. Thank you to every one involved in this production. Be well and happy shooting.
If others would find it useful, I'd be interested to see a comparison between Hornady's 160gr FTX Leverevolution in calibre 30-30 and more traditional 30-30 ammo. Specifically as it relates to hunting effectiveness on deer and potentially larger game animals such as moose, elk, bear, etc at distances up to 100-200 yards. I have read on forums that hunters have found the round ineffectually 'breaks up' in the animal if fired at closer distances under 50 yards and wondered if there was any truth to that. Thanks and greatly appreciate all your videos and the effort you and your crew put into them.
Perhaps you can buy all the rounds you mention, along with the goodies that create a good representation of Paul's "Meat Targets," test them and get back to us with the results. I rather doubt that Paul would be willing to incur the costs of doing as you ask/desire for one persons curiosity. Just sayin'.
Elk require a PMC Starfire Eldorado 150 grain Talon Ammo. . They bore a 3” hole through any animal. Regular white tail drop better with 125 grain hollow points.
Great video. I think one or two rounds pulverizing a bad guys lungs should stop most sumos and avoid hurting loved ones in adjacent rooms. So, while it’s not right for all instances, in certain short range home defense situations where over penetration is an issue, I think any of these would do the job. Keep up the good work, I learn a lot each time I tune in.
It’s so satisfying to watch Paul fire a shot shell and immediately rack the pump in one motion. I’ve tried to practice this with dummy shells at home and I cannot even come close to his speed and smoothness.
@@TheKingOfJordan1 Howdy; Paul is as he states, " Whatca call ah Professional ", so don't try it at home, go to the range. Working the action is called / referred to as "pullrack" one word ='s one action, pull trigger/slide action
I love it when I see that Mr. Harrell has a new "shotgun" video!!! I would have NEVER purchased low-recoil #4 buckshot anyway, but this just shows that there are NO advantages to it, either. As always, great info. Thx, Paul.
The advantage of larger buckshot is that it is more effective as the range opens up. Unless there is a really good reason behind taking a smaller buckshot, why handicap yourself?
I use #4 buck when I'm coyote hunting, expecting close shots. I just meant that I would never buy the low-recoil variation of it. I've got 8 different choke restriction sizes, and have found that the #4 buck patterns best from my .690 choke. However, the 00 buck likes the .705 choke the best. I love to pattern shotgun ammo of all kinds.... I've also discovered that the Federal Flight Control 00 buck is hard to beat, when using an Improved Cylinder(.720). This is because it provides just enough restriction to keep the wad tight, as it leaves the muzzle, but not so much restriction that it prematurely strips the wad from the shot(which would defeat the design of the ammo).

@@user-td1zo3tv9p It never hurts to ask...if you don't ask, the answer is always no.
I'm reminded of something mom once said about squeaky wheels and oil.
I agree, this would be interesting to see.
Elk require a PMC Starfire Eldorado 150 grain Talon Ammo. . They bore a 3” hole through any animal. Regular white tail drop better with 125 grain hollow points.
I got my first 12 gauge today, a Mossberg 590, going to load it with #4 buckshot. Great video as always Paul, lots of good info.
M7, M7B and M9 bayonets will fit the M590 lug and magazine end cap milspec configuration. An ode to the trench broom of the great war.
useful and interesting as always.
That's some slick racking.
All these years later, still I find myself hitting the "like button" prior to watching paul's video.
For me reduced sound pressure levels are far more important than reduced recoil.
I Love These Videos and Very Much Value Paul's Opinion ...
His Sense Of Humor Is Awesome...
Look at mister fancy pants with his new coat.

@GYPSY KING FURY Indeed, looks like quality to me too.
It would be best if he shot left handed with it.
New? It's from the 1970s!
@@EDSKaR New to Paul.
It’s so satisfying to watch Paul fire a shot shell and immediately rack the pump in one motion. I’ve tried to practice this with dummy shells at home and I cannot even come close to his speed and smoothness.
All that talk about pasties makes me want to take a closer look.
ILeft Heh... 😄
Makes me think of a few coffee stands in town.
I had this muscle memory to grab some ones out of my pocket when he said that.
ILeft makes me want some paste with my pork!
The way you describe things is awesome. It's like describing a cooking recipe... of destruction.
Paul's shoulder is harder than a mountain made of diamond.
Now you're just being kind of silly.
Not to be rude, but #4 Buckshot is a pretty low recoil round to begin with, unless you're shooting it out of a very light shotgun.
Always good info
After watching these videos, I want to engrave “For use with Remington ammunition only” on all my barrels.
he puts his foot back in the exact same spot every time. thats a good stance
I was intrigued by how he worked the pump seemingly as the shotgun was recoiling. That takes a LOT of practice!
@@jamiesloan5902 Yeah, I like the Federal Flitecontrol load too :)
The most educational gun channel on TH-cam.
3rd watch. RIP Paul
Paul. As always I enjoy and learn from your painstaking and thorough videos. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. All the best.
Paul Harrell mech idea: T-shirt that reads, “Meat Target”
A great big thumbs up again for Paul's vids, No bull and all backed by testing
Algorithm boost. PH=G.O.A.T
Keep it up,Paul.Your tests are well constructed and fair. You're an asset to those who want to be informed.
Looks like it might be a good choice for people overly concerned about penetration in their home defense shotgun.
Ahh. A video from Paul. The perfect thing to watch/listen to while working on 3D artwork!
One the best channels on TH-cam
"The best channel on TH-cam." There, I fixed it for you.
@@itsapittie Is to you. I stand by my comment. This is a great channel but it isn't the only one I watch. I mean if this was the absolute best channel ever then I couldn't be bothered to view any other channel, gun channel or otherwise
@@brantleyhester6641 I was just being a smartass. However...just because one channel is the "best" that doesn't mean I won't watch other channels as well. German chocolate is the "best" cake but I like others as well. Liking one thing best doesn't mean to the exclusion of all others.

Thanks for doing this comparison. My 5' and a wish wife is quite happy with her 20 Gauge 870 with Remington Green and Yellow box #4 buck!
John Walters also a short stock with a soft butt pad on the end seems to help a lot.
I just obtained some Sellier & Bellot #4 buck, with 21 pellets per shell, so I guess it is a reduced recoil ammo. Sounds like it would be good for a home-defense scenario where over-penetration is a big concern (like in my small apartment).
