@@boomstick617 He states that caveat more as a why to not get drug into an argument of whose way is better. An amateur thinks they understand everything about a subject. An expert knows enough to know they lack total knowledge and it's technically possible for the know-it-all amateur to, ironically, know something the expert doesn't. It's unlikely, but possible. The only way to win that game, as the expert, is not to play.
Paul - it's possibly worth mentioning that the "Athletic" - and more square on - stance is more associated with wearing body armour. The theory is that the armour is more use to the wearer when "square on" because it offers best coverage of the vital organs - the traditional bladed stance offers the arm hole which allows projectiles to enter and damage. It generally seems more unstable with heavier recoil e.g. 12g, but is manageable with 5.56 and 9mm. It is not a natural position for those who grew up shooting at home. However I think it is worthwhile to explain why that stance exists, and allow shooters to be informed why they may/not want to choose it. It might be popularised by media/film coverage, and therefore be "the best/latest/coolest" but perhaps of no use unless wearing armour. Big fan, cheers mate.
James Middleton it's also fairly awkward shooting in the bladed stance while wearing body armor/Helmet/Nods especially when you're carrying various bReaching gear and equipment. Solid comment.
I was a very junior writer on a paper for the Canadian and British Army in adopting a duck walk posture for this reason in the late 90’s. There were way too many injuries and deaths as a result of arm and armpit strikes and our novel approach was to change doctrine rather then up armour our troops. I think we know what happened to the paper I was part of writing. In any case the theory was proven sound potentially in several engagements with selective troops trained in this posture at least in “gaming” and possibly in active shooting scenarios, (I’m not at liberty and honestly if I was I wouldn’t be privy in any case, I was after-all very junior). Our proposal suggested 8kgs weight savings for the same defensive quality with very few additional inserts versus the changes suggested. Turns out that savings was not good enough to make such wide reaching changes and it was also believed that compliance would be less then 80% making the difference negative or at least a wash. (I was also lead to believe that some elite units may use some of these methods and postures but honestly I think they were just trying to make it seem like we didn’t waste 8 years of development and training.)
There's another advantage of the more squared up stances. You have a wider field of swing in both directions. A very bladed stance and quickly becomes awkward if you have to swing left....
After watching Paul's handling of his pump-action shotgun, it's apparent I have way too many Shatner-esque....pauses in how I operate mine. Need more practice....I reckon.
Me too. I’ve just recently started using my 590 for PSG in the Uk. I’ve been using semi autos beretta 1301 etc. I had noticed that 8or 9 times out of ten when a competitor was having issues it’s with the slide action guns. Well I’m in that category now, that silver button... short stroking getting flustered after making mistakes with time pressure and it all going to pot. I’ve gone from being fairly proficient within my peers to might as well pack up and go home don’t even tell me the time. Lots more practice needed.
Ok I just binge watched 5 hours of this awesomeness and I figured it out. Paul is the Alton Brown of shooting. Lots of facts and lots of science expertly delivered in a tidy package.
Good comparison. I have learned so many priceless lessons from both men. If you can pullrack a KSG (so fun), everybody else just bows. I don't even care how bruised my shoulder is.
This guy is a real deal. Serious, well researched advice without any flashy dumb crap. He should be the MAIN source of information regarding shooting. I've shot shotguns since I was 10 and love them. My Mossberg is my baby. But I learned new things from this video that I had never considered. Very impressed by the insight and actual knowledge here. Consider me a lifelong subscriber now. Incidentally... if they ever decide to remake Dirty Harry... Paul has the Eastwood glare down perfect and would be an amazing Harry!

I've seen countless videos about using slide action shotguns, but this is *THE* most comprehensive one simply talking about what to do and how to do it at the very base. It might be just repeating stuff everyone already knows, but to me this is remarkably informational.
My all-time favorite gun was my Ithaca 37 Featherlight. When I was young, it was hands down the best pump action shotgun made in America. It's a shame you don't hear much about them anymore.
Agreed, my M87 featherlight was the reason why picked up av keltec ksg as my tacticool shotgun. I have an 870 in the safe and ran Mossberg as well but the action on that Ithaca was much so much cleaner. That and the first time i had the shells drop out of the action when i racked my 870 while leaning right to shoot through an opening, i realized how superior that action is. I had the thing go click twice and was absolutely certain i didn't short stroke when i looked down and saw two unfired shells in the sand and racked it one more time to confirm. When i saw that third shell land, i was like "well the extra couple rounds in the tube aren't worth that". I can't be the only guy that had run into this. I'm really surprised I've never seen anyone mention it. That 87 is still the only shotgun i have that gets any use. The weight and speed of pointing on it are so much faster than the ksg that even the 12 rounds doesn't push me to break it out much. I really don't get why people don't know about these guns. I get asked what it is on the line sometimes which boggles me. It used to be the standard issue squad car gun in LA and socal where I'm at and this is a hand me down from my uncle from when he was still on the force. How did these drop off the map so quick?
I had the Ithaca 37 featherlight however it was prone to jamming. Even sent it back to the factory and it never was reliable. Additionally it would pump fire if you kept the trigger suppressed while working the slide. That was real speed shooting that came in handy when ambush ducks off a stream bank.
@@PilgrimBangs I'm surprised you had problems with yours. I sold sporting goods in the early 1970's, and the featherlight was by far the most reliable pump gun we had. The Remington and the Winchester both used a stamped receiver, and the Mossberg was actually a cheap knockoff made for people who couldn't afford a good gun. The Ithaca was actually the only American made pump shotgun still made with a receiver machined out of a single block of steel. I don't think I ever had an Ithaca come back, and mine never jammed. I did like the slam fire ability, although that sure got expensive fast.
@@CtrlAltRetreat The story I heard was that they couldn't price compete with their more expensive production costs. I know they stopped production for a while, and I don't know if the modern Ithacas are as good as the old ones.
Perfect timing, Paul. I'm a new shooter and gun owner from Canada, and I was planning to purchase my first pump action very soon. I was heavily leaning towards obtaining a Mossberg, and I must say that your breakdown of its features definitely sold me on that notion. I'm planning to get a Mossberg in the Retrograde series of pumps, now debating on getting a 500, 590 or 590A1. The latter being a much higher price tag but built to milspec. We'll see what my wallet says when its time.
@@domtron8873 Well, Im still planning to get a Mossberg, but Paul's video about home defense made me turn my eye to Winchester shotguns. I ended up buying a cut down Model 12, made in 1914. It was a great deal, couldnt turn it down. It's in fantastic condition and shoots wonderfully, especially the slam fire function. I'm not a fudd by any means but my tastes reflect that of a fudd in some ways. I like wood and metal, and old milsurps. Cant help it.

Every person that posts a video on TH-cam should take lessons from this man regardless of the subject matter. The tone of his voice, the knowledge and the smoothness of his videos are simply superb. He is one of the best instructors I have ever seen. Even if you weren’t interested in guns this man makes it interesting. A teacher is only as good as their ability to accurately relay information in a way that people can learn. This man is an excellent teacher.
His voice timbre, voice quality, words spoken from the diaphragm and not the back of the throat and his cadence, never stumbling over words and rapid fire delivery is mesmerizing. It keeps you rapt with attention. The man is gifted in those ways but also knows how to exploit other gifts and his strengths in the instructor role. He's really good and you will find everyone else with a similar channel as lackluster in comparison. Even the background scenery is gorgeous and chosen not to be overly distracting (unless there's deer in the background--always fun).
@David Vance no. You still have to work the pump, so it's not automatic. Is it mechanically similar? Yes. Though I was under the impression that most the newer shotguns (870 or 500series) have a disconnector so you have to let go of the trigger to be able to shoot that next round.

I almost got a Mossberg 500, but went with the Remington 870. They were the same price, but I prefer the safety on the 870 because I have more practice with that type, so I got it instead
I remember when I was a kid using guns with a safety button near the trigger, but I don’t own any. I find the tang mounted safety easier to reach without loosening my grip, and easier to find.
@@dELTA13579111315 They're both great guns. My buddy joe has an 870 and it shoots great. My only gripe with the 500 is that I have a barrel that could be used for a flag pole. The rifled barrel is much shorter and lighter.
@@roscocsa I got the 'home defense' model, so it has an 18.5" barrel (or whatever the shortest I can have where I live is) and a capacity of 6+1 for 2 3/4" shells. I'm really happy with it so far and I've put a few hundred shells through it so far, around half of which were loaded by me and the rest factory ammo
Spent some time at the range yesterday and tried out some different shooting stances. Found out after watching this today that my dad taught me your slightly squared off to target stance 50 odd years ago. It's a great recoil management stance and helps with the pullrack.

I've got a Stevens 320, made by Savage. It has the rotating bolt(like the Winchester 1300), and the pump handle automatically frees up, and starts back, as soon as you fire a round. It's very fast, once you get the hang of it. It was a cheap shotgun, but it's been GREAT. I've hunted with it, more than any other gun that I own. lol
Aiming down the barrel with both eyes open, seeing two bead sights and knowing which one to look at isn't THAT EASY. I've been shooting skeet for years (right handed), and I keep both eyes open, but I usually put a piece of tape over my left eye glasses lens so that I can still see peripherally, but more importantly I now I only see 1 site bead. This little trick has helped me tremendously.
Thanks Paul, I just bought my 1st Mossberg Maverick Security Pump shotgun. I used a Remington 870 when I was in the Service. 76-83. So it's been a while. I needed a refresher course !
Thank you for being one of the few “experts” who actually says when you keep both eyes open there are double images. So many talk about sight picture with both eyes open yet never discuss the additional image that you must learn to ignore.
2+ years later. I watch Paul's well practiced work with a pump shotgun and am reminded of the adage "practice makes perfect." His pullrack method making his rate of fire very high. Almost as fast as aimed shots with a semi auto. It can certainly inspire one to practice. I am the content owner of a Mossberg 590SP and am also familiar with the Remington 870. I like them both and think that both are very good shotguns. I do however prefer the ergonomics of the Mossberg. It is more left handed operator friendly with the tang mounted safety also I think manipulating the Mossberg safety quicker and more intuitive. I like it's ease in top off loading and not having to worry about getting thumb pinch from the loading gate found on the Remington. I think overall operation from a standpoint of ergonomics especially, in a tactical scenario the 500 series Mossberg is a more well thought out design. Paul is both a good teacher and a gentleman and I do enjoy and learn from his videos.
Since he didn't cover the 870 much here is a bit of info about that loading gate that I learned the hard way. Aside from not being able to easily unload from the tube like the 500 or 590 if you don't fully push the shell into the tube it is possible to get it past the loading gate where in pushes back out into the space the gate covers not allowing another round to go in and it jamming things up in a rather frustrating and embarrassing way (if others are around). You then have to disassemble the gun which if you are using the gun for self defense just ruins your whole day. That being said I still love my 870 with a passion and would buy another if I ever needed too.
Remington developed the Flexitab system to address that and it has been standard on the 12 Gauge 870 since the mid-1980s. You can buy a Flexitab kit from Remington.

The best and most operationally challenging and technical video you've ever done by far. We've all been waiting for this PULLRACK video we just did not have the vocabulary. Your ability to pull the trigger and rack the next round instantaneously in pump action shotguns is why you get to call yourself the professional that you are. It's mesmerizing to watch.
This video is just what I was looking for, I purchased my first ever shotgun yesterday ( mossberg 500 ). I own several handguns and have been training with them for about four years now but I realize that a shotgun is a completely different animal. I greatly appreciate Paul Harrell's videos and have learned much from viewing them over the last couple of years. Although he states plainly at the beginning of the video that there are many good procedures for loading and unloading I do believe that he has chosen the best methods to his knowledge (which is vast) to display for us in this video. Therefore in my stubborn determination to become a better shooter I will probably watch this video many times over the coming days and practice with the dummy shells before I head over to the range. Thanks for another excellent video Mr. Harrell, you're sharing of knowledge is much appreciated.

I learned to shoot skeet and clay targets with a Browning autoloader then an springfield pump. Also used a bolt action savage 20. But my go to when aurther ain't beating me down is a mossberg pump 500. For those who don't know, Paul just gave you the best lesson on the planet for use of the pump.

AMERICARS Queensland A bolt action is a poor substitute for a modern semiauto in most calibers. However, for a distance gun, they have a nitch.. For most situations, if the opponent is bolt gun distance, they can be avoided. Having said that, I do have a 7mm Mauser bolt gun, for that unusual situation. Are you allowed semiauto rifles in Australia?
This is the best pump-shotgun video that one will find...You are a very skilled operator, unlike other channels featuring "armchair commandos.".....'Few understand the "pullrack" concept, instead, wasting time, when moments count...i.e......."pull"..."recover from recoil"..."rack"..."pull"...etc....Your handling skills are outstanding, are are ones that all should hope to aspire.
Even though I've been shooting shotguns for almost 10 years I'd still watch this to maybe learn a thing or two. As a matter of fact I bought a 12 gauge pump action shotgun as a Christmas present. Edit: I learned a couple of things and when it comes to carrying ammo I use my pockets, bandolier or side saddle.
To me the stock band shell holder is "I'm empty, find cover & replenish" rather than a "top off", but a very valid point. OTOH.. grabbing it for a bump in the night you have those available Vs. the 2 in your dbl barrel or however many are in your slide action/semi when you pick it up.
As a lefty, I have to say that my Browning 12ga pump has served me well for about 15 years now👍 The tang mounted safety and bottom eject work really well for me. Anyone else like the BPS?
Right-handed, but yup, fan of the BPS. Safety is where it's supposed to be, action release is where it's supposed to be, and ejects properly and forcefully. Never quite understood why the BPS doesn't get a lot of love....
Bps is good but its not as popular due to price and lack of port loading ability, also lack of adoption from Mil/Police. Still an excellent choice of firearm.
I honestly never heard of Pullrack, but I’m liking that concept. I’ve been using shoot-pump-shoot for firing my shotgun, and I think simply thinking about it as one action might just work out better. I’ll try that next time I do shotgun drills, thank you Paul.
I own Benelli Supernova pump. May be not so popular in USA, but it is worth mentioning that majority of IPSC championships in standard manual are won with Supernova.
The 'athletic stance' square to the target most likely lends the advantage not of steadying a long arm, but ensuring you are adequately protected by armor instead of exposing your uncovered side to the target. Just a thought.
has to do with alot of the competitive shooting scene influencing regular shooters as well. But you are also correct regarding the tacticool community and their use of body armour. one of the few overlaps that those two groups of shooters share haha
Thats about as close as competive shooting will ever get. Now wait while I empty 15 rounds from my 4 foot long shotgun that weighs 20lb, gently set it on a folding table, then walk to another table where my pistol with a massive C-more red dot is staged.
James Stubbins my understanding is from before armor. With isosceles stance, getting shot in the chest would take out one lung. This left you with one good lung and so long as you handled the pneumothorax, you could get medical care. Standing in a weaver or Chapman stance put you at risk of both lungs being struck with one projectile, and from what I understand, took you out of the fight, which as you pointed out, is still a concern using these stances with plate setup.

@ Paul Harrell Thanks Paul, I've been scouring the airwaves looking for a demonstration of "pullrack" because I just wasn't getting it practicing on my own. Very simple thought to keep in mind. Keep up the great work. Its common to see you tubers that are proficient with one or two types of firearms but rare to see such proficiency with pretty much everything you touch. Keep up the great work. I love my 500 for just the differences you mentioned (plus.i thought the wood furniture looked nicer)
I'd highly recommend the TacStar low profile side saddle, which is what I use on my Mossberg 500. Holds 6 shots, hardly adds any weight, and the weight that is added is balanced pretty well. For me, I keep in the saddle 3 shells of Fiocchi Exacta low recoil 2 3/4" 12ga 1oz, 1,150 fps aero-slugs, and 3 shells of Winchester high velocity 2 3/4" 12ga steel BB shot that clocks in at 1,600 fps. This combo is more than enough for any home invasion, and if I think I need more for some reason, I keep the other 7 slugs and the other 22 shells of steel BB in their boxes near my bed. Coupled with my .40S&W Astra A-100 loaded with 13+1 rounds of Hornady Critical Duty holstered and under my pillow, plus my nearby AR-15 loaded with a 30 round mag of armor piercing 5.56x45mm NATO, I'd say I'm pretty prepared for any dubious uninvited visitors. :)
Pullrack sounds and is great, unless you use a 97 Winchester or several other brands. When the trigger is back, and you slide it fast, it goes off again. When I had a 97 I could pump-fire a full tube faster than I could empty a semi-auto. Hold trigger back and just keep pumping. Slide closes, round goes off, pump again. So I think it is pull, release the trigger, then rack...(Grin). I always learn a lot watching these, even after 60 years of shooting. Thanks for doing the great videos.

My Benelli Nova has a cool feature...a slide/load disconnect. There’s a button on the bottom of the slide. Say you’re loaded with buckshot but want to load a slug. You depress the disconnect button located on the slide, you rack it ejecting what’s in the chamber, but it doesn’t pick up and load a shell. Instead, you can manually load a slug or whatever. Or not. It’s also a good feature if you don’t want to carry your weapon around with a loaded chamber. Fire. Rack using the diconnect button, and top off your ordinance tube. Your tube is loaded, your chamber is empty.
As a young adult comin from a poor background instead of getting a brand new 119.99 .45(seen as low as 89.98 new)or 99.99 (on sale sometimes as low as 79.99 for 4th of july sales) 9mm hi-point to fill a defensive role. Went with a 100$ pawnshop (120$ including a pretty new craftsman "sawzall") winchester 1300 defender. Although knew one guy with a toyota camry,a deertag and a hi-point 9,who put whitetail on the table consistently until he couldnt one year and got back into longguns. Had a standard polymer pump and glass filled nylon whatever injected rear pistol grip that was unique of its era. won one on ebay recently even has the winchester shield logo screw cap. Miss that thing even if firin it enough to get a bit of skill with it,kinda like bowling different ways,may throw off my stocked shotgun shooting fundamentals a bit as used to be what was most familiar with. Got a kinda what I called "rock and chop" motion with it that worked ok even with 3" mag shells of 000 and my favorite remmy 41 p 4buck out of I think was an 18.5 or 18.75 inch barrel so could hold six 3" shells which my new one dont. Regret sellin it. So much so got a new winny sxp defender and am adaptin that 1300 grip to it for nostalgias sake. And with a 28"barrel on the way for it,is a good justification for it to be pistolgrip again,as dont want it to be too much of a brush hazard in my neck of the woods.(and is no way they can say its under 29 inches when the barrell is 28) But wanted a barrel ideal for both gooses and mooses in 12 gauge 3 inch shot. with my .450 bushmaster currently fillin the "sluggun" role. Even with a bit of a gimped shoulder can still fire 3"effectively for years. And who knows how many more if start usin a rear pistol grip again and my almost locked forearm takes the brunt of it first. Excited to play with the concept at least. Also still Think would just rather go 10 gauge than 3 and a skosh 12. Gonna make my own loop foregrip/pump with a piece of leather off a nice thriftstore belt and I think brass coated woodscrews for fun. Throwin a lil cowboy flair on an o.d. green made in Turkey winchester you got on clearance when they were on sale... and mavericks went up in price again... and were out of stock where were still relatively cheap but more than the old 188.88 for a m88. But yeah,things like cowboy blong on a modern pumpgun sounds like good clean fun. Kinda like the o.d. green early airforce issue triangular foregrip replicas from jse surplus that match pretty good with my km15 w.w.s.d. "plastic fantastic" 20" barrel "good enough" marksman rifle build project Im tryin to shoehorn under a grand for somethin fun and functional. Like my what would colt do "thinking mans manurhin" .22 mag heritage I put a folding bipod,9"barrel,and 2x7 32mm pistol scope on I still had. Is a lil scout rifle with the vmax rounds have for it. With shot placement of course,could drop whitetail out to 200 yds on paper at least,but haven't chronied a 9" barreled heritage before myself. And given the fact I get more gas blowback from it than any of my AR projects (even before better gas blocking charging handles that really weren't needed,but were ambidextrous highly rated and on sale)gonna assume is probably slower than the velocity by barrel inch chart I saw, but still faster than .22lr out of a full length rifle barrel without gettin literally ridiculously low grain and powdered for orbit. Gotta find the fun in function i say. Is a quasi sniper rifle you could fit in your front pouch if youre one of those kangaroo pouch,or fanny packer types. Mines only 6 shot but know they came out with a higher cap version,think was 9. Decided with my 16" .450"master of bushes" brushgun build to just use accoustic guitar sling attachment points so I could use a wide but affordable fender guitar strap for my short but chunky rifle I'd pack for an undeterminate time in bear country. Was pic top but as was my brushgun just went with an attached carry handle rear and non folding front which I painted white with u.v. chargeable paint which glows blue in the dark,for a good but not too bright night site. Also attached lego atv tires to the oversized for quick hand turning detachement screws for the carry handle. Prevent damage from overtightening,& can cradle the magwell and rest my thumb on it for certain distances and angles. Good cheap mod 👍 Instead of going hogue (since more rubber means more vibration absorption and dampening junk(which is gettin to be the theme of this one)for 150$ am just gonna wrap part of the foregrip with flecktarn pattern bicycle handgrip soon. And strech a couple of 2.99 amazon camouflage universal handgun grips over a couple of railed parts. Went with an a1 style stock with a think was sorbethane pad that bumps it out to around a2+ length and filled the stock with compressed foam I repurposed from optics packaging. And after that may test if diy black tooldip doues anthing if refinish a few parts of it and probably paint tiger stripe camouflage on the o.d. green buttstock with it. I prefer 20 gauge just because it was what my grandfather taught me on, and it's a good balance in my mind between "Does the job" and "Controllable by my short ass and t-rex arms."
One word of ⚠warning⚠to owners of 870 wingmasters and similar designs by other mfg's. If you short-stroke a 870,what can happen a live round is released as your closing the slide and gets caught between the shell carrier and the CLOSED breech bolt. The gun is seriously jammed and you either have to have the strength of super-man or carry a set of nylon gun-smith punches to remover the entire trigger mechanism to remove the live round. Now,on a Browning BPS or Ithaca 37,the shell carrier is inverted. If you short-stroke either one of these guns,the live round is instantly ejected and faster then you can blink,another live round is quickly cycled in.
Any pump action is great. Because pump action involves you in shooting process more than semiautos. I mean that operator becomes part of the cycling process. Operator and gun are shooting together.
3:48, OMG, I did NOT know about that method of unloading! I always just kept pumping the action until it was empty. I had to actually reach over and examine my Mossberg 500 to find the part you were talking about depressing to let the shells out. Kinda wish you had warned us that pressing the armature closer to the trigger group can cause the shell to launch back and whack your thumb really hard. You gotta press it fairly close to the end of the arm where it's holding the shell in place.

An expert knows enough to know they lack total knowledge and it's technically possible for the know-it-all amateur to, ironically, know something the expert doesn't. It's unlikely, but possible. The only way to win that game, as the expert, is not to play.
Paul - it's possibly worth mentioning that the "Athletic" - and more square on - stance is more associated with wearing body armour. The theory is that the armour is more use to the wearer when "square on" because it offers best coverage of the vital organs - the traditional bladed stance offers the arm hole which allows projectiles to enter and damage. It generally seems more unstable with heavier recoil e.g. 12g, but is manageable with 5.56 and 9mm. It is not a natural position for those who grew up shooting at home. However I think it is worthwhile to explain why that stance exists, and allow shooters to be informed why they may/not want to choose it. It might be popularised by media/film coverage, and therefore be "the best/latest/coolest" but perhaps of no use unless wearing armour.

James Middleton it's also fairly awkward shooting in the bladed stance while wearing body armor/Helmet/Nods especially when you're carrying various bReaching gear and equipment. Solid comment.

I was a very junior writer on a paper for the Canadian and British Army in adopting a duck walk posture for this reason in the late 90’s. There were way too many injuries and deaths as a result of arm and armpit strikes and our novel approach was to change doctrine rather then up armour our troops. I think we know what happened to the paper I was part of writing. In any case the theory was proven sound potentially in several engagements with selective troops trained in this posture at least in “gaming” and possibly in active shooting scenarios, (I’m not at liberty and honestly if I was I wouldn’t be privy in any case, I was after-all very junior). Our proposal suggested 8kgs weight savings for the same defensive quality with very few additional inserts versus the changes suggested. Turns out that savings was not good enough to make such wide reaching changes and it was also believed that compliance would be less then 80% making the difference negative or at least a wash. (I was also lead to believe that some elite units may use some of these methods and postures but honestly I think they were just trying to make it seem like we didn’t waste 8 years of development and training.)
There's another advantage of the more squared up stances. You have a wider field of swing in both directions. A very bladed stance and quickly becomes awkward if you have to swing left....

Me too. I’ve just recently started using my 590 for PSG in the Uk. I’ve been using semi autos beretta 1301 etc. I had noticed that 8or 9 times out of ten when a competitor was having issues it’s with the slide action guns. Well I’m in that category now, that silver button... short stroking getting flustered after making mistakes with time pressure and it all going to pot. I’ve gone from being fairly proficient within my peers to might as well pack up and go home don’t even tell me the time. Lots more practice needed.

My Mossberg is my baby. But I learned new things from this video that I had never considered. Very impressed by the insight and actual knowledge here. Consider me a lifelong subscriber now. I've seen countless videos about using slide action shotguns, but this is *THE* most comprehensive one simply talking about what to do and how to do it at the very base. It might be just repeating stuff everyone already knows, but to me this is remarkably informational.
My all-time favorite gun was my Ithaca 37 Featherlight. When I was young, it was hands down the best pump action shotgun made in America. It's a shame you don't hear much about them anymore.
I bought one in 16 gauge just this month. I was like "sweetheart, where have you been all of my life?" We are going out again tomorrow.
Agreed, my M87 featherlight was the reason why picked up av keltec ksg as my tacticool shotgun. I have an 870 in the safe and ran Mossberg as well but the action on that Ithaca was much so much cleaner.
That and the first time i had the shells drop out of the action when i racked my 870 while leaning right to shoot through an opening, i realized how superior that action is. I had the thing go click twice and was absolutely certain i didn't short stroke when i looked down and saw two unfired shells in the sand and racked it one more time to confirm. When i saw that third shell land, i was like "well the extra couple rounds in the tube aren't worth that". I can't be the only guy that had run into this. I'm really surprised I've never seen anyone mention it.
That 87 is still the only shotgun i have that gets any use. The weight and speed of pointing on it are so much faster than the ksg that even the 12 rounds doesn't push me to break it out much.
I really don't get why people don't know about these guns. I get asked what it is on the line sometimes which boggles me. It used to be the standard issue squad car gun in LA and socal where I'm at and this is a hand me down from my uncle from when he was still on the force. How did these drop off the map so quick?
I had the Ithaca 37 featherlight however it was prone to jamming. Even sent it back to the factory and it never was reliable. Additionally it would pump fire if you kept the trigger suppressed while working the slide. That was real speed shooting that came in handy when ambush ducks off a stream bank.
@@PilgrimBangs I'm surprised you had problems with yours. I sold sporting goods in the early 1970's, and the featherlight was by far the most reliable pump gun we had. The Remington and the Winchester both used a stamped receiver, and the Mossberg was actually a cheap knockoff made for people who couldn't afford a good gun. The Ithaca was actually the only American made pump shotgun still made with a receiver machined out of a single block of steel. I don't think I ever had an Ithaca come back, and mine never jammed. I did like the slam fire ability, although that sure got expensive fast.
@@CtrlAltRetreat The story I heard was that they couldn't price compete with their more expensive production costs. I know they stopped production for a while, and I don't know if the modern Ithacas are as good as the old ones.

I'm planning to get a Mossberg in the Retrograde series of pumps, now debating on getting a 500, 590 or 590A1. The latter being a much higher price tag but built to milspec. It was a great deal, couldnt turn it down. It's in fantastic condition and shoots wonderfully, especially the slam fire function. I'm not a fudd by any means but my tastes reflect that of a fudd in some ways. I like wood and metal, and old milsurps. Cant help it.

Every person that posts a video on TH-cam should take lessons from this man regardless of the subject matter. The tone of his voice, the knowledge and the smoothness of his videos are simply superb. He is one of the best instructors I have ever seen. Even if you weren’t interested in guns this man makes it interesting. A teacher is only as good as their ability to accurately relay information in a way that people can learn. This man is an excellent teacher.
His voice timbre, voice quality, words spoken from the diaphragm and not the back of the throat and his cadence, never stumbling over words and rapid fire delivery is mesmerizing. It keeps you rapt with attention. The man is gifted in those ways but also knows how to exploit other gifts and his strengths in the instructor role. He's really good and you will find everyone else with a similar channel as lackluster in comparison. Even the background scenery is gorgeous and chosen not to be overly distracting (unless there's deer in the background--always fun).

You still have to work the pump, so it's not automatic.
Is it mechanically similar? Yes. Though I was under the impression that most the newer shotguns (870 or 500series) have a disconnector so you have to let go of the trigger to be able to shoot that next round.

I almost got a Mossberg 500, but went with the Remington 870. They were the same price, but I prefer the safety on the 870 because I have more practice with that type, so I got it instead
I remember when I was a kid using guns with a safety button near the trigger, but I don’t own any. I find the tang mounted safety easier to reach without loosening my grip, and easier to find.

Spent some time at the range yesterday and tried out some different shooting stances.
Found out after watching this today that my dad taught me your slightly squared off to target stance 50 odd years ago. It's a great recoil management stance and helps with the pullrack.

I've got a Stevens 320, made by Savage. It has the rotating bolt(like the Winchester 1300), and the pump handle automatically frees up, and starts back, as soon as you fire a round. It's very fast, once you get the hang of it. It was a cheap shotgun, but it's been GREAT. I've hunted with it, more than any other gun that I own. lol

Aiming down the barrel with both eyes open, seeing two bead sights and knowing which one to look at isn't THAT EASY. I've been shooting skeet for years (right handed), and I keep both eyes open, but I usually put a piece of tape over my left eye glasses lens so that I can still see peripherally, but more importantly I now I only see 1 site bead. This little trick has helped me tremendously.

2+ years later. I watch Paul's well practiced work with a pump shotgun and am reminded of the adage "practice makes perfect." His pullrack method making his rate of fire very high. Almost as fast as aimed shots with a semi auto. It can certainly inspire one to practice. I am the content owner of a Mossberg 590SP and am also familiar with the Remington 870. I like them both and think that both are very good shotguns. I do however prefer the ergonomics of the Mossberg. It is more left handed operator friendly with the tang mounted safety also I think manipulating the Mossberg safety quicker and more intuitive. I like it's ease in top off loading and not having to worry about getting thumb pinch from the loading gate found on the Remington. I think overall operation from a standpoint of ergonomics especially, in a tactical scenario the 500 series Mossberg is a more well thought out design. Paul is both a good teacher and a gentleman and I do enjoy and learn from his videos.
Since he didn't cover the 870 much here is a bit of info about that loading gate that I learned the hard way. Aside from not being able to easily unload from the tube like the 500 or 590 if you don't fully push the shell into the tube it is possible to get it past the loading gate where in pushes back out into the space the gate covers not allowing another round to go in and it jamming things up in a rather frustrating and embarrassing way (if others are around). You then have to disassemble the gun which if you are using the gun for self defense just ruins your whole day. That being said I still love my 870 with a passion and would buy another if I ever needed too.
Remington developed the Flexitab system to address that and it has been standard on the 12 Gauge 870 since the mid-1980s. You can buy a Flexitab kit from Remington.

I have watched many videos on cruiser ready shotguns and unloading shotgun shells without racking every time. This video explained both techniques straight to the point. Great presentation.

The best and most operationally challenging and technical video you've ever done by far. We've all been waiting for this PULLRACK video we just did not have the vocabulary. Your ability to pull the trigger and rack the next round instantaneously in pump action shotguns is why you get to call yourself the professional that you are. It's mesmerizing to watch.
This video is just what I was looking for, I purchased my first ever shotgun yesterday ( mossberg 500 ). I own several handguns and have been training with them for about four years now but I realize that a shotgun is a completely different animal. I greatly appreciate Paul Harrell's videos and have learned much from viewing them over the last couple of years. Although he states plainly at the beginning of the video that there are many good procedures for loading and unloading I do believe that he has chosen the best methods to his knowledge (which is vast) to display for us in this video. Therefore in my stubborn determination to become a better shooter I will probably watch this video many times over the coming days and practice with the dummy shells before I head over to the range. Thanks for another excellent video Mr. Harrell, you're sharing of knowledge is much appreciated.

I learned to shoot skeet and clay targets with a Browning autoloader then an springfield pump. Also used a bolt action savage 20. But my go to when aurther ain't beating me down is a mossberg pump 500. For those who don't know, Paul just gave you the best lesson on the planet for use of the pump.

AMERICARS Queensland A bolt action is a poor substitute for a modern semiauto in most calibers. However, for a distance gun, they have a nitch.. For most situations, if the opponent is bolt gun distance, they can be avoided. Having said that, I do have a 7mm Mauser bolt gun, for that unusual situation. Are you allowed semiauto rifles in Australia?

This is the best pump-shotgun video that one will find...You are a very skilled operator, unlike other channels featuring "armchair commandos.".....'Few understand the "pullrack" concept, instead, wasting time, when moments count...i.e......."pull"..."recover from recoil"..."rack"..."pull"...etc....Your handling skills are outstanding, are are ones that all should hope to aspire.
Even though I've been shooting shotguns for almost 10 years I'd still watch this to maybe learn a thing or two. As a matter of fact I bought a 12 gauge pump action shotgun as a Christmas present. Edit: I learned a couple of things and when it comes to carrying ammo I use my pockets, bandolier or side saddle.
To me the stock band shell holder is "I'm empty, find cover & replenish" rather than a "top off", but a very valid point. OTOH.. grabbing it for a bump in the night you have those available Vs. the 2 in your dbl barrel or however many are in your slide action/semi when you pick it up.

Right-handed, but yup, fan of the BPS. Safety is where it's supposed to be, action release is where it's supposed to be, and ejects properly and forcefully. Never quite understood why the BPS doesn't get a lot of love....
Bps is good but its not as popular due to price and lack of port loading ability, also lack of adoption from Mil/Police. Still an excellent choice of firearm.
Yes I really like the BPS, and Browning firearms in general.

I honestly never heard of Pullrack, but I’m liking that concept.
I’ve been using shoot-pump-shoot for firing my shotgun, and I think simply thinking about it as one action might just work out better.

I own Benelli Supernova pump. May be not so popular in USA, but it is worth mentioning that majority of IPSC championships in standard manual are won with Supernova.
The 'athletic stance' square to the target most likely lends the advantage not of steadying a long arm, but ensuring you are adequately protected by armor instead of exposing your uncovered side to the target. Just a thought.
It also makes you a wider target much more likely to get hit in the first place

has to do with alot of the competitive shooting scene influencing regular shooters as well. But you are also correct regarding the tacticool community and their use of body armour. one of the few overlaps that those two groups of shooters share haha

Now wait while I empty 15 rounds from my 4 foot long shotgun that weighs 20lb, gently set it on a folding table, then walk to another table where my pistol with a massive C-more red dot is staged.
James Stubbins my understanding is from before armor. With isosceles stance, getting shot in the chest would take out one lung. This left you with one good lung and so long as you handled the pneumothorax, you could get medical care. Standing in a weaver or Chapman stance put you at risk of both lungs being struck with one projectile, and from what I understand, took you out of the fight, which as you pointed out, is still a concern using these stances with plate setup.

@ Paul Harrell Thanks Paul, I've been scouring the airwaves looking for a demonstration of "pullrack" because I just wasn't getting it practicing on my own. Very simple thought to keep in mind. Keep up the great work. Its common to see you tubers that are proficient with one or two types of firearms but rare to see such proficiency with pretty much everything you touch. Keep up the great work. I love my 500 for just the differences you mentioned (plus.i thought the wood furniture looked nicer)
That's why I love the Benelli Nova; mag tube lockout. No wasted ammo just load slug from saddle directly into chamber.
I'd highly recommend the TacStar low profile side saddle, which is what I use on my Mossberg 500. Holds 6 shots, hardly adds any weight, and the weight that is added is balanced pretty well.
For me, I keep in the saddle 3 shells of Fiocchi Exacta low recoil 2 3/4" 12ga 1oz, 1,150 fps aero-slugs, and 3 shells of Winchester high velocity 2 3/4" 12ga steel BB shot that clocks in at 1,600 fps.
This combo is more than enough for any home invasion, and if I think I need more for some reason, I keep the other 7 slugs and the other 22 shells of steel BB in their boxes near my bed.
Coupled with my .40S&W Astra A-100 loaded with 13+1 rounds of Hornady Critical Duty holstered and under my pillow, plus my nearby AR-15 loaded with a 30 round mag of armor piercing 5.56x45mm NATO, I'd say I'm pretty prepared for any dubious uninvited visitors. :)

Pullrack sounds and is great, unless you use a 97 Winchester or several other brands. When the trigger is back, and you slide it fast, it goes off again. When I had a 97 I could pump-fire a full tube faster than I could empty a semi-auto.
Hold trigger back and just keep pumping. Slide closes, round goes off, pump again.
So I think it is pull, release the trigger, then rack...(Grin).
I always learn a lot watching these, even after 60 years of shooting. Thanks for doing the great videos.

1. Stand a little less square to the target
2. Put my right leg forward and straighten it a little bit
3. Keep 1 eye open
4. Shoulder the shotgun push the trigger and rack the slide shooting myself in the shoulder

My Benelli Nova has a cool feature...a slide/load disconnect. There’s a button on the bottom of the slide. Say you’re loaded with buckshot but want to load a slug. You depress the disconnect button located on the slide, you rack it ejecting what’s in the chamber, but it doesn’t pick up and load a shell. Instead, you can manually load a slug or whatever. Or not. It’s also a good feature if you don’t want to carry your weapon around with a loaded chamber. Fire. Rack using the diconnect button, and top off your ordinance tube. Your tube is loaded, your chamber is empty.
I always learn something from Paul's videos. Thanks so much.

.45(seen as low as 89.98 new)or 99.99 (on sale sometimes as low as 79.99 for 4th of july sales) 9mm hi-point to fill a defensive role.
Went with a 100$ pawnshop (120$ including a pretty new craftsman "sawzall")
winchester 1300 defender.
Although knew one guy with a toyota camry,a deertag and a hi-point 9,who put whitetail on the table consistently until he couldnt one year and got back into longguns.
Had a standard polymer pump and glass filled nylon whatever injected rear pistol grip that was unique of its era.
won one on ebay recently even has the winchester shield logo screw cap.
Miss that thing even if firin it enough to get a bit of skill with it,kinda like bowling different ways,may throw off my stocked shotgun shooting fundamentals a bit as used to be what was most familiar with. Got a kinda what I called "rock and chop" motion with it that worked ok even with 3" mag shells of 000 and my favorite remmy 41 p 4buck out of I think was an 18.5 or 18.75 inch barrel so could hold six 3" shells which my new one dont.
Regret sellin it.
So much so got a new winny sxp defender and am adaptin that 1300 grip to it for nostalgias sake.
And with a 28"barrel on the way for it,is a good justification for it to be pistolgrip again,as dont want it to be too much of a brush hazard in my neck of the woods.(and is no way they can say its under 29 inches when the barrell is 28) But wanted a barrel ideal for both gooses and mooses in 12 gauge 3 inch shot.
with my .450 bushmaster currently fillin the "sluggun" role.
Even with a bit of a gimped shoulder can still fire 3"effectively for years.
And who knows how many more if start usin a rear pistol grip again and my almost locked forearm takes the brunt of it first.
Excited to play with the concept at least.
Also still Think would just rather go 10 gauge than 3 and a skosh 12.
Gonna make my own loop foregrip/pump with a piece of leather off a nice thriftstore belt and I think brass coated woodscrews for fun.
Throwin a lil cowboy flair on an o.d. green made in Turkey winchester you got on clearance when they were on sale... and mavericks went up in price again... and were out of stock where were still relatively cheap but more than the old 188.88 for a m88.
But yeah,things like cowboy blong on a modern pumpgun sounds like good clean fun. Kinda like the o.d. green early airforce issue triangular foregrip replicas from jse surplus that match pretty good with my km15 w.w.s.d. "plastic fantastic" 20" barrel "good enough" marksman rifle build project Im tryin to shoehorn under a grand for somethin fun and functional.
Like my what would colt do "thinking mans manurhin" .22 mag heritage I put a folding bipod,9"barrel,and 2x7 32mm pistol scope on I still had.
Is a lil scout rifle with the vmax rounds have for it.
With shot placement of course,could drop whitetail out to 200 yds on paper at least,but haven't chronied a 9" barreled heritage before myself.
And given the fact I get more gas blowback from it than any of my AR projects (even before better gas blocking charging handles that really weren't needed,but were ambidextrous highly rated and on sale)gonna assume is probably slower than the velocity by barrel inch chart I saw, but still faster than .22lr out of a full length rifle barrel without gettin literally ridiculously low grain and powdered for orbit.

Decided with my 16"
.450"master of bushes" brushgun build to just use accoustic guitar sling attachment points so I could use a wide but affordable fender guitar strap for my short but chunky rifle I'd pack for an undeterminate time in bear country. Was pic top but as was my brushgun just went with an attached carry handle rear and non folding front which I painted white with u.v. chargeable paint which glows blue in the dark,for a good but not too bright night site.
Also attached lego atv tires to the oversized for quick hand turning detachement screws for the carry handle. Prevent damage from overtightening,& can cradle the magwell and rest my thumb on it for certain distances and angles.

Instead of going hogue (since more rubber means more vibration absorption and dampening junk(which is gettin to be the theme of this one)for 150$ am just gonna wrap part of the foregrip with flecktarn pattern bicycle handgrip soon. And strech a couple of 2.99 amazon camouflage universal handgun grips over a couple of railed parts. Went with an a1 style stock with a think was sorbethane pad that bumps it out to around a2+ length and filled the stock with compressed foam I repurposed from optics packaging. And after that may test if diy black tooldip doues anthing if refinish a few parts of it and probably paint tiger stripe camouflage on the o.d. green buttstock with it.
Its the shotguns time to shine now though.

I wish there were people like Paul in more fields. I.e: people that say things only based on experience and gathered knowledge, as well as being able to talk and come to a point so well. I even wish I could be more like Paul.
I love shooting rifles and pistols, but I've always been a shotgun guy. I love the recoil of a full load 12 gauge slug.
I prefer 20 gauge just because it was what my grandfather taught me on, and it's a good balance in my mind between "Does the job" and "Controllable by my short ass and t-rex arms."
One word of ⚠warning⚠to owners of 870 wingmasters and similar designs by other mfg's.
If you short-stroke a 870,what can happen a live round is released as your closing the slide and gets caught between the shell carrier and the CLOSED breech bolt.
The gun is seriously jammed and you either have to have the strength of super-man or carry a set of nylon gun-smith punches to remover the entire trigger mechanism to remove the live round.
Now,on a Browning BPS or Ithaca 37,the shell carrier is inverted.
If you short-stroke either one of these guns,the live round is instantly ejected and faster then you can blink,another live round is quickly cycled in.

Any pump action is great. Because pump action involves you in shooting process more than semiautos. I mean that operator becomes part of the cycling process. Operator and gun are shooting together.
3:48, OMG, I did NOT know about that method of unloading! I always just kept pumping the action until it was empty. I had to actually reach over and examine my Mossberg 500 to find the part you were talking about depressing to let the shells out. Kinda wish you had warned us that pressing the armature closer to the trigger group can cause the shell to launch back and whack your thumb really hard. You gotta press it fairly close to the end of the arm where it's holding the shell in place.
