Is it really? With today's prosecuting attorneys, you could be spending decades behind bars. That's right... decades. Spending 20-30 years in prison for "murder" isn't much of a life, especially in American prisons. You're more likely to get murdered by your cellmate than a random home intruder. Here's a realistic saying... "There's a lawyer behind every round that leaves your chamber" Modern self defense is basically an automatic jail sentence. So, in reality... it is NOT better to be judged by 12.
I'm 74 years old, 30 year retired/disabled US Army. I live on a farm in southern Ohio. Remington 870, 20ga home defender, 00 buckshot and backed up by my Sig 1911. The 1911a1 was my side arm for most of my military career. It just feels right. I also have an M-1 Garand as the back up to the back up.
I think there is a pretty strong argument for with for 20ga for home defense. BUT if you've already got a 12ga and aren't interested in buying another gun it's the right choice.
Paul Harrell demonstrated: OO buck shot will penetrate several interior walls and then an exterior wall. #4 buck tends to stop at the exterior wall(has slightly less penetration). So your neighbors are safe.
Well, apologies to my neighbors, but they’re the last thing on my mind when someone kicks my door and I’ve got to end some 🤡 so that I don’t die. I’d rather be alive in prison than be dead in my home. I don’t use a shotgun though for my home defense, I use my suppressed 13.7 AR15 5.56. Nothin wrong with shotguns for sure, but I need the range and I prefer the capacity and precision of my AR. Plus, and probably more importantly, I’ve got SIGNIFICANTLY more time and experience on an AR platform than any other weapons system. That was primary and handgun secondary when I was enlisted and deployed. I don’t get stressed out when I’m being shot at like most people would be, understandably of course. You get desensitized to an extent when you’ve been to war. Sadly that’s probably one of the few positive that came from my deployment. There’s a lot more negative I deal with daily, but I tell everyone they need to do some stressed training whenever possible. Get their heart rate up and do some drills. You’ll learn a lot!!!

I was at work, but my mother was home and thankfully my two dogs got them out of the house and the police got them not even a block away. Home invasions happen daily. That’s one reason people own firearms, protection.
I’ve only heard “cruiser ready” from one person my whole life.. My late uncle. He was a Missouri state trooper back in the early eighties through about the mid nineties. This was how he always kept his 870 at home. Learned a lot of things from that man. Thanks for the video! 🇺🇸
Surprising because it's well known in the shotgun home defense world. I don't have any law enforcement family members but have heard about it a lot. It's how I've always kept all my pump shotguns in my house. But my main bedside gun is a Beretta 1301 which is just a pick up and click off the safety deal.
I have heard it before, but I don't hear it a lot, you know, the "Vernacular" changes with everything. To me it just means, keep it LOADED but the Chamber EMPTY. That is the way I keep mine, shotguns are NOT DROP SAFE. Really to ME, "MOST guns are NOT DROP SAFE". Dropping firearms is not good.
For defense it is the best and quickest way to get a shotgun into the fight. The Sheriff is completely right on that, and, although I own a very old 870, his point about the Mossberg havig the slide release in an ergonomicallt correct position is serious consideration for people who may be thinking of getting a shotgun. My ONLY criticism of the 870 is the poor placement of that feature.
when I was a cop cruiser ready was one in the chamber and the tube full of shells giving you one more to use since 4 or 5 shots is a pretty low number. Don't know where this sheriff gets his info but he is so wrong on so many level other than if you hit a guy center mass with a 12g 00 buck he will die. Everything else he said was shit except for the part about not relying in on a handgun.

I have a a pair just like you said. Shotgun is next to dresser and muffs on top, grab and go. I also have a light on the end of shotgun that would completely blind an intruder and give me complete view of friend or fo so an accident does not happen.
@@powdermonkey5183 That's why I keep a TX22 compact with laser/flashlight on nightstand and shockwave loaded in the corner. I easily center aluminum cans at 20 yards with the laser and the built in flashlight is blinding. I own many calibers but know 22lr is about the only one that won't damage hearing as much, if I have to scramble for the shockwave, my hearing won't matter.
If you have a Mossberg or Remington you don't need to cut the barrel. Both companies sell home defense barrels right at 18.5 inches and are completely legal. Just remove the long barrel and install the short barrel.
Retired USCG 2 years ago. Got the chance to work with Marines. They convinced me to pickup a Mossberg 590A-1 for a number of reasons. #1 with me was the action andd location of the safety followed by the chambering design of the feed ramp. Like you, got mine used at a gun show for $200 including the bayonet 🙂 I became a #4 buck fan 20 years ago; hit center-of-mass and it's going to leave a mark.
I agree with you, the location of the safety is what did it for me. I'm right handed but an left eye dominant so I close my right eye so I shoot rifles and shotguns left handed. The safety in the middle works for me and the rest of my family that shoots right handed.
Have a cousin who was an ER doctor in a large US city. He said bird shot is a man killer, he said he never seen someone shot with it at home defense range survive. He said there is no way to to patch someone up before they will bleed out be cause of how it shreds the flesh.

I wish our sheriffs in California were as informative and helpful as the Missouri sheriffs. I worry about getting punished more than the bad guys if I have to defend myself with a shotgun. I can’t wait to move to an American state.
This Sheriff seems to be one of the good ones. Don't make the mistake thinking that all or even a majority of Sheriff or Police in Missouri or anywhere else are honest oath keeping public servants. Just a example would be Forte from Jackson County, MO. A true Oath breaking coward, and an embarrassment to all good police. Record police everywhere, document and expose so we can help the good ones stand up and do the right thing. God Bless all the oath keepers, they truly have a very difficult time ahead.

Great advice. I keep a Remington 870 Express Youth in 20G by the bed. Shorter barrel and a magazine extension. Six shots in the tube in #4 buckshot. Love it!
Waaaay back when I was still young, we used to carry the Rem 870 for boardings. In our range training, we knew that of the 9 pellets of 00 Buck, at least one would be a flyer, landing somewhere off the targets torso. What the Sheriff is saying is truth. If you are going to carry/use one of these, TRAIN with it. They are superbly reliable, easy to repair, and easily modified.

You aim then all 9 pellets hit target--you point NOT ALL pellets hit target, or miss, defeating the entire point of numerous buckshot loads in the first place. Don’t forget overall length. It must be 26” or longer muzzle to butt. That’s how they got Randy Weaver. He cut the barrel to 18”, but the stock was short and the overall length was below 26” and he was charged with a felony.

@benthere404 I messed with pistol grip shotguns back in my narcotics days to have a "non cop" long gun (if you want to call it a long gun). It just wasn't a good fit for me. I found it much less comfortable to bring to a target. Now- that said, it had an 18" barrel....... overswing was a problem for me. The short barrel "pistol grip" stuff that's out there now may be a game changer. Sometime, I'll give one a try.
@@SheriffMattOller The wording nowadays is confusing, as the shockwave has a bird's head rear grip. When buying it, the gun shop owner specifically said changing to pistol grip in rear or adding vertical foregrip is automatically a felony offense.

Sound advice! Also, if you live in a neighborhood/area that is more densely populated, don't discount even smaller projectiles than #4 buckshot! Number 4, or 5, birdshot can be deadly at closer ranges, and you have a greater probability of not over penetrating common building materials found in homes today! Great Video! God Bless... Bill
The same can be said for those that live alone in a rural area - really can't beat the penetration and rate of fire of a 1301 loaded with 7 federal personal defense slugs. Crooks will learn very fast there is a big difference between concealment and hard cover.
@@FC-qe1wlbirdshot is plenty at the right distance. It's hardly different from a slug within a foot of the barrel. At 15', it's still doing a lot of damage. And less risk of over penetration is a serious plus for some people.
Using the shotgun racking sound as a defense tool is a terrible idea and is only perpetuated through the gun community by fuds who don't know what they're talking about.
Excellent advice with #4 buck. Used this loading in line of duty for several decades. Only additional advice would be to add a tension-adjustible two point sling and train with it in order to secure during transition if needed.
My unit in vietnam issued SAVAGE 12ga pump shotguns for ambush and VC control. Also the M-79 with 00-BUCK for search and destroy. 4th div. ARMOR RECON the highlands.
A couple months ago I picked up a Mossberg 590 in 20 gauge for home defense and I have a Remington 870 12 gauge already. I turned 74 on my last birthday and my shoulders aren’t the best. I agree with you that a good pump shotgun is hard to beat. I enjoy your videos and did subscribe to your channel.
I started handloading buckshot during the lockdown. There are a lot of options and I actually got some molds for #0 I bought a bag of #4 Buck also Practice is more affordable that way
My dad who passed away recently was a deputy sheriff from 1964 to 1989. In going through stuff I found a Mossberg 18.5 inch barrel. Went down and looked through the safes till I found his old Mossberg 500A. Serial number is a B prefix and it comes from 1969-70. Put the 18.5 inch barrel in. Fit perfectly. I strongly suspect this rode in his patrol vehicle for many years. Has some rust spots on that I am going to get cleaned off. Oil it up and then in honor of my dad time to thump some shoulders next time I am at the range.
It’s not considered a shotgun. It’s classified as ANY OTHER WEAPON so it doesn’t have the legal shotgun Federal standard he mentioned. You have a great tool there.
I'm going to clear something up for the serious minded adults here... A. Self-defense... what it is and how do you best prepare to defend yourself... 1: You make it impossible or as difficult as possible to get to you... How you ask, easy... you put in defensive windows and doors... that are impossible to breach... B You install a security system with both cameras and communication systems incorporated... C You have at your ready a fire arm... and access to a cell phone to call 911.... A bad person has to get to you to harm you.. if they can't get to you you are safe..
Retired 40 years as LEO. Was issued a Remington 870 about 95% of my career. Loaded with rifled slugs, not much going to stand after being hit by a slug. I agree for home defense #4 buck is my choice. Great video boss. Stay safe
I have a Mossberg 500 with the 20in barrel holds 7 rounds in the tube, has been my go to since I bought it in 2005. I own an ar15 rifle, handguns and still prefer the 12gauge. I worry about the distance a 5.56 round will travel and still be lethal while a 12 gauge delivers more energy than a 5.56 up close but doesn’t have the effective range. It’s to me the perfect tool for the specific job of home defense.
People hunt with .223/5.56 out to 500 yrds. The 223/5.56 is least likely go thru the walls of your house (the bullet tumbles when it hits hard objects), the shot pellets more likely will. Tom Gresham at Gun Talk says this has been researched.
I'm a 73 year old former Marine (1968-71) and keep a Maverick 88 12 gauge with #4 buckshot for home defense. Living in a mobile home in a rather large park means I have neighbors all around so, even though I have 00 buckshot on hand, I keep the #4 for use inside of the home. The shotgun is not my only gun, but it's the one I feel most suited for my particular situation. My AR is my Winchester Model 94 30-30.
So you say you are a retired Marine 68-71, how long in the reserves? Marines in Nam used M 16s after they had their M14s taken away.I was a Corpman attached to the FMF (tell me what that means) how do you go from an M16 to a shot gun, never in country.? AR would be any Marines choice that I know.
First off, I did not say I was a retired Marine as I served 3 years active duty. Boot camp was June - Aug. of 1968, Platoon 184 at Parris Island, SC. I was in the inactive reserve for almost 2 years after active duty and then finished out my 6 year military obligation in the PA Army National Guard as an 11Bravo E-5 Sergeant squad leader in an infantry company (C Co., 109 Inf. Reg). While in the Marines I got orders to WestPac after serving a year in El Toro, CA. From staging at Pendleton I was initially assigned to DaNang, Vietnam but about half of our company had our orders changed to either Okinawa or Iwakuni Japan. I served all of 1970 in Okinawa, serving as a 4083 COBOL Computer Programmer. FMF is short for Fleet Marine Force so I guess that you assumed I was not a US Marine. And as far a the shotgun goes, a 12 ga. pump shotgun makes more sense for self-defense in my particular situation. Semper Fi. @@miked.7722
I really enjoyed this man's analysis of the shotgun as a defense weapon. Probably on of the most insightful i have seen. I built my own trench gun, minus the bayonet, and lugs from a remington 870. I even put the old original style "corn cob" foreend on it for better gripping purposes. I do keep it loaded with 1 1/4 ounces of number 5 copper plated shot, as this is not likely to penetrate walls.

Thanks, Sheriff, for this honest video. Six years in the retail firearms industry and a fair amount of civilian tactical training, and I tend to agree with your reasoning. I sold an awful lot of 12ga shotguns to a lot of concerned new gun owners, and I always felt good about it.

Excellent Post Sheriff, Practicality with reality. In 1967 when I went into business as the local gun store in a rural community, I knew folks wanted to arm themselves after civilian unrest and riots in that same year. Having experience in handgun training and believing with experience that home protection with handgun was a critical mindset training, So I started a training of the reality of using shotgun over a nervous shaking hand and inconsistent impact to threat using the Colt and B27 human silhouette targets. The Ithaca youth shotgun was the favorite for youth, small frame, and recoil conscience folks. When military guys ( Veterans) showed up with orders of deployment asking for home defense gun for family protection, handguns from 1911 45’s to Colt 25 automatics. Before selling any firearm, I took that time to step out back to the range to demonstrate the simple but complex if you are adrenaline charged issues with home protection. Removing the threat. After Q and A with potential user, we shot a couple of handguns including a revolver .38 special. Then the 20 Gauge pump shot gun. I then ask the potential purchasers to close their eyes and I racked the gun. The majority of thugs out there instinctively know that sound and pointing in their relative direction then firing, is certain injury maybe deadly. MOST often the shot gun was chosen over handgun. By the way the targets were on a wire that was advance toward the shooter starting at 21 feet and coming as fast as I could pull the attached line. Handgun hits I Or none out of 5 shots. 2 for 2 with shotgun and sometimes 3 . I always insisted the woman make the decision. Sometimes no sale and they would go to another gun store and purchase the gun the male counterpart wanted. A few instances over time after deployment the handguns were traded fo shotguns. Sheriff you video was professionally presented as any loving brother, father, or grandfather would do if not tainted with narcissistic attitude or over blown testosterone. All you're saying is, in the absence of training, long sight radius (shotgun) is more accurate than short sight radius (pistol). People should train and I don't know anyone who wants to train with a shotgun. Your demo leaves out many other factors involved in selecting a home defense weapon.
All great points! Love the idea of using the target moving toward you to train. Real world application should always be the main thing. To wit, over the years when coworkers (primarily women) have asked me about handgun selection for self defense, I always point out that they need to remember that they need to "train" to use whatever they choose as they will be using it! I explain that you will NOT be taking your time and aiming each shot when using the handgun so you should train to point and shoot. Train to be comfortable with firing multiple rounds in a burst at your attacker/intruder. Remember that adrenaline will be a factor.
My dad was a cop and I still have his old Ithaca Model 37 Deerslayer. It has "Police Special" engraved on the barrel. Barrel is designed to shoot slugs and buckshot.
Good video. I use the low recoil OO buck loads. At 25 yards they print around 11 inch patterns. Check your patterns with various loads. You will find one that works best from your shotgun. If the recoil bothers you, get a Kic-Ezz pad installed.
I don’t recommend using low recoil shotshells. When I was a police officer towards the end of my career, my department tried to utilize low recoil 00 Buck Winchester shells on injured deer from car crashes. They failed miserably on killing already crippled deer. I personally had a couple failures of those shells to penetrate deeply enough to kill the deer, which I was standing over! I was an armorer for the department, so had access to the old high brass 00Buck shells that we had been using before. I wrote up a memo to the Administration detailing my actions and why, and got them to approve switching back to the high brass full power loads. These loads were the old police loads, and some held 12 pellets, some 9, but they were accurate enough for close range work and hit a lot harder. Did they kick? You bet they did! But for home defense a person probably will be too excited to notice the recoil. Good luck to you.
Got my Mav 88 for 100 bux used...It had the Cruiser "Pistol Grip" which even with #8 BirdShot transfered every OUNCE of recoil to my Wrist. It was HORRIBLE...No way to get a followup shot. Changed it out for 25 bux to a Mossberg 590S "Shockwave-style" Bird's Head or "Raptor Grip". MUCH, MUCH more controllable.STILL, I finally just found a used stock from a 500 series and settled with that...The Short Grips are just too punishing shooting either from the hip OR half-way forward from the shoulder. Advice...Just get a regular-style STOCK. Also, the 1 3/4 inch short shells are interesting BUT 1)Have inconsistent patterns 2)YES, less recoil BUT have a tendency, even in a pump with the adapter, to leave the shell case jammed in the shotgun..3)Are EXPENSIVE when you can find them. (Aguila's sell for about 2 bux a shell in a pak of ten). SO, learn to shoot #4 2 3/4 inch buckshot, with a regular stock and be satisfied. OH yeah...The Sheriff mentioned hand-guns...100% agree with his assement on Home Defense. HOWEVER, me at age 69+ have joined the AR-15 "Nation" and now have a 7.5 inch 300 AAC "BlackOut" AR-Pistol as my go-to home defense weapon. MUCH quieter (Reason it was originally called "WHISPER" and that was even before some folks started suppressing them. Helps save my hearing)..Much less recoil....Full Power out of that short barrel at 7.5 to 9 inches, 30-cal loads from 95 to 220 gr. Sub to Super-Sonic. AND, now with IAAC and AMMO, INC making affordable ammo, my FIRST round Grab-n-Go home defense. Oh yeah, 20-30 rds per mag. The Shotgun is now my second level with the Pistol 3rd....
Great video Sheriff! I agree! I would add that the best birdshot size for defense in my humble opinion is #4. At close range it would act as a giant Glaser safety slug. Also a Shotgun has a great intimidation factor. Often You will never even have to pull the trigger. A Shotgun also helps mitigate over penetration issues avoiding collateral deaths/injuries.
That why in the old west when the town sheriff was called to deal with problem situations at the local saloon , the sheriff would always come with a double barrel 10 gauge as the peace maker because even a fast gun fighter did not want to square off against a shotgun with his six shooter revolver and other problems went away like Drunk Cowboys sobered up quickly, a gambler losing money at cards suddenly wasnt angry as He thought, when the prospect of being shot by the scatter gun was the other choice
As a retired LEO you are correct! Carried a revolver transitioned to semi automatic and polymer pistols. Along with 9mm or 45ACP pistols on night stand, the arm kept next to my dresser in bedroom is a Remington 870 loaded with bird shot. Because it can always be found locally.

We have hard time finding any ammo unless you want to pay taxes on each round? Not to mention the 2nd amendment here has been trampled into the dirt making anyone who defends themselves including LEOs the offenders not the victims! I have seen too many good shooting turned into dog and pony shows for politicians. I still have rock salt in several 12 gage rounds. And consider them and birdshot less then lethal compared to 00 buck shot. And my better half has shot some great birds when I take her out with the boys. My point is what you grab your go to arm it has to work and work every time! No matter who grabs it?

I do exactly what you do with my Mossburg 88 12 gauge. Its in the corner by the bed. The spring loaded hammer is released with safety off and I have no. 4's loaded. I like the reason to release spring tension, because hopefully the shotgun will be ready to use for a long period of time and not make the spring weak if it had been cocked. Also as you said, you don't have to think when you've been asleep trying to find the safety, after whatever reason you grabbed the mind changer weapon. One other note is I don't have any small kids in our home either, but that's a parenting issue to keep kids safe. One other reason for no. 4's would be if you lived where other people could get hurt thru walls. I think it would be safer than double 0 buck ? Good video.
Paul Harrell tested different loads thru house walls and concluded rifles (AR15), slugs, and 00 buck over penetrates (many walls, think neighbors), birdshot doesn't, but the sweet spot was #4 buck (12 gauge) or #3 buck (way more common for 20 gauge). Unless you live rurally, that's a serious consideration.
I run number 1 and/or #4 buck for home defense, to reduce the odds of overpenetration. In my small suburban, single story house, a 7 yard shot is about my longest line of sight.
18.5" just in case. I've had my DIY shottie tested by US Marshal's and a local PD (my son had some issues with the law BITD), and both dept's commented on the extra 1/2 inch.
I've heard so many advocate the AR15 for home defense. I live in an apartment. I need to consider my neighbors. I don't want to hurt one of my neighbors . I think a shotgun, with the right load , stands a better chance of not overpenetrating than an AR15.
It's been shown that jurors are MUCH more likely to convict someone in a self defense shooting who uses an AR-15, versus a pistol or shotgun. Prosecution paints the AR-15 as an evil assault weapon, and some people don't know any better.

I looked at a Beretta tactical autoloader at Grafs when I bought this Mossberg........ it was pretty darn cool, but it was also $1700......... as cool as it is, having $1700 gathering dust in my bedroom corner didn't seem as logical as the $200 pump gun. I mean, cool is cool, but practical is real. The average person in the world can't afford to spend that kind of money on a home defense shotgun, so I try to tune my stuff to the average, law abiding person rather than stuff the average person will never own.
Just ordered a Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical from Exile Armory (they also have a youtube channel) for $936 total shipped to my FFL. The 940 is on par with the 1301 tactical at literally half the price. I also recently purchased the 590A1 and it is BY FAR the BEST pump shotgun I have ever owned.
Dropping the hammer so it can be pumped without using the release button is excellent advice. I hadn’t thought of that. I have a 20ga 870 youth with #3 buck in the closet and electric muffs on the my bed’s headboard.

You don't want to be looking for a flashlight and struggling to hold both and you need to be sure of your target and background in the dark
Not property but if you’re life is danger or others in all means protect yourself. If someone is breaking into your car and you shoot you’re not gonna win that battle in court.
Im not arguing against 2nd amendment rights, I 110% believe in it... but its very sad that in this day and age, using a firearm no matter what the situation is, even in your own home for self defense, will almost certainly land you in jail. Our country is heading down a real bad path.
This is good stuff! I am a former LEO and a prior serving Marine, and one of my MOS's was as a weapons instructor. I cannot agree more about the reliability of a shotgun for self defense in the home. I see too many people dismiss the shotgun in favor of SBRs or handguns based on ammo capacity. The point the Sherriff illustrated about being wakened in the middle of the night and grabbing your defensive arm and shoot like you are bright eyed and bushy tailed at the shooting range is an excellent point. Your situational awareness, motor skills are all still rousing from your zzzzzzzz's. With a shotgun you can identify a threat after waking up, be sluggish and still land a good hit to stop the threat level. And just to put a fine point on it, a lot of content creators and or know it all gun people, will review shotguns on their channel and suggest which one they recommend, and then dismiss a shotgun for home defense. Someone's critical thinking wires are crossed! What scenario is a shotgun best for if not "CQG"?! You're not using a shotgun to engage adversaries at 400 meters, they are for close range use, and the home defense protocol is where they excel at.
Rifle and pistol rounds can go through multiple layers of drywall especially if they miss hitting a 2x4 wood stud, so that can be quite destructive inside a home obviously.
I was air force security forces for 6 years and also a combat arms specialist, all combat MCS 12 ga shotguns were loaded with 2-3/4" 00 buck (9 .32 caliber pellets). Munitions guys and special TRF guys always carried them. 00 is universal just about. There is a saying we all learned "pistols put holes in you, rifles put holes through you, belt fed machine guns cut you in half, shotguns take parts off."
I was one of those "Munitions Guys." Strategic Air Command, Carswell AFB, 1984 -1988. Remington 870 for nuclear weapon close-in security (until we called you guys for a "sweep.") Awesome weapon, let's say I own more than one. SF was a thankless job, thanks for keeping things secure.
Amen, as one with over 3 decades in law enforcement, now retired, the pump shotgun is my number 1 weapon to have when I have to get up to investigate a noise in the middle of nigh, with a powerful flashlight. Mossberg has the Shockwave, which my wife likes, and I always been a big fan of the Remington Brand and have the Tac-14, loaded with 00 buck at the ready, with my Sig P220 as a backup... Everyone needs a shotgun, be it in .410-gauge, 16-gauge, 20-gauge or 12-gauge, it's all up to one's preference and what they can handle safely. I don't like birdshot, any of the buck shots would work and please if and when one need to protect themselves or loved ones, don't hesitate or be afraid to defend yourselves, especially what's going on today in this country.

I have a Winchester 1300 Defender that I bought for $200 loaded with low recoil 00 buckshot. It’s setup cruiser ready. I do have a 500 lumen light mounted on it. I found out it can fire the short 12 guage shells so I’ve ordered some of those (can’t find those on the local shelves). They have found some penetration problems with #4 buck with the target wearing heavy winter clothing.
Nice presentation. I used to use #4 buck. I went to a class for armed defense personnel at Blackwater years ago. Their choice was #1 buck. 30 caliber pellets at 1400fps. It was a cheap load from a European manufacturer. Every pellet penetrated FBI ballistics gel to almost exactly 16 inches. The group was tight enough that at 10 yards, all the pellets hit in a 2 inch group on entry. No human could walk away from that.
What I do like about a shotgun is that most home invasions still happen at night and most homeowners aren't ranchers (so think smaller houses or apartments). When the bad guy(s) are wide awake and you are just waking from a sound sleep, there isn't a lot of square footage between you and them. You want the max number of projectiles (#4 BK or larger) hitting on that first shot b/c the intruders typically don't like to remain in place for your follow up shots.
@@user-Cosmicplayhouse_Yes. Number 4 Buck is good for apartments/condos due to less mass and less chance for over penetration. Still penetrates great, but shells like 00 Buck can overdo it at least in gel tests. 00 Buck is great though if you don't have attached neighbors.
Retired Police Officer from Ohio. I have the Remington 870. I use it because I’ve owned one since 16 years old. I believe you should stick with what works. I’m going to have to pick up some #4 shot. Makes sense. Keep my 00 buck for backup!
Im a Maverick 88 owner. Over 11 years with one this month and a few thousand of rounds. Never an issue. Wouldnt mind a M590a1 someday, just for the cool factor. Know your pattern and switch to slugs if distance is an issue.

Is it really? With today's prosecuting attorneys, you could be spending decades behind bars. That's right... decades. Spending 20-30 years in prison for "murder" isn't much of a life, especially in American prisons. You're more likely to get murdered by your cellmate than a random home intruder.

Modern self defense is basically an automatic jail sentence. So, in reality... it is NOT better to be judged by 12.
I'm 74 years old, 30 year retired/disabled US Army. I live on a farm in southern Ohio. Remington 870, 20ga home defender, 00 buckshot and backed up by my Sig 1911. The 1911a1 was my side arm for most of my military career. It just feels right. I also have an M-1 Garand as the back up to the back up.

I think there is a pretty strong argument for with for 20ga for home defense. BUT if you've already got a 12ga and aren't interested in buying another gun it's the right choice.
If you just go with the M-1, there is no need for a backup! Just keep a couple spare clips nearby.
Paul Harrell demonstrated: OO buck shot will penetrate several interior walls and then an exterior wall. #4 buck tends to stop at the exterior wall(has slightly less penetration). So your neighbors are safe.

Well, apologies to my neighbors, but they’re the last thing on my mind when someone kicks my door and I’ve got to end some 🤡 so that I don’t die. I’d rather be alive in prison than be dead in my home. I don’t use a shotgun though for my home defense, I use my suppressed 13.7 AR15 5.56. Nothin wrong with shotguns for sure, but I need the range and I prefer the capacity and precision of my AR. Plus, and probably more importantly, I’ve got SIGNIFICANTLY more time and experience on an AR platform than any other weapons system. That was primary and handgun secondary when I was enlisted and deployed. I don’t get stressed out when I’m being shot at like most people would be, understandably of course. You get desensitized to an extent when you’ve been to war. Sadly that’s probably one of the few positive that came from my deployment. There’s a lot more negative I deal with daily, but I tell everyone they need to do some stressed training whenever possible. Get their heart rate up and do some drills. You’ll learn a lot!!!

I was at work, but my mother was home and thankfully my two dogs got them out of the house and the police got them not even a block away. Home invasions happen daily. Surprising because it's well known in the shotgun home defense world. I don't have any law enforcement family members but have heard about it a lot. It's how I've always kept all my pump shotguns in my house. But my main bedside gun is a Beretta 1301 which is just a pick up and click off the safety deal.
I have heard it before, but I don't hear it a lot, you know, the "Vernacular" changes with everything. To me it just means, keep it LOADED but the Chamber EMPTY. That is the way I keep mine, shotguns are NOT DROP SAFE. Really to ME, "MOST guns are NOT DROP SAFE". Dropping firearms is not good.
For defense it is the best and quickest way to get a shotgun into the fight. The Sheriff is completely right on that, and, although I own a very old 870, his point about the Mossberg havig the slide release in an ergonomicallt correct position is serious consideration for people who may be thinking of getting a shotgun. My ONLY criticism of the 870 is the poor placement of that feature.
when I was a cop cruiser ready was one in the chamber and the tube full of shells giving you one more to use since 4 or 5 shots is a pretty low number. Don't know where this sheriff gets his info but he is so wrong on so many level other than if you hit a guy center mass with a 12g 00 buck he will die. Everything else he said was shit except for the part about not relying in on a handgun.

I have a a pair just like you said. Shotgun is next to dresser and muffs on top, grab and go. I also have a light on the end of shotgun that would completely blind an intruder and give me complete view of friend or fo so an accident does not happen.
@@powdermonkey5183 That's why I keep a TX22 compact with laser/flashlight on nightstand and shockwave loaded in the corner. I easily center aluminum cans at 20 yards with the laser and the built in flashlight is blinding. I own many calibers but know 22lr is about the only one that won't damage hearing as much, if I have to scramble for the shockwave, my hearing won't matter.

If you have a Mossberg or Remington you don't need to cut the barrel. Both companies sell home defense barrels right at 18.5 inches and are completely legal. Just remove the long barrel and install the short barrel.

Retired USCG 2 years ago. Got the chance to work with Marines. They convinced me to pickup a Mossberg 590A-1 for a number of reasons. #1 with me was the action andd location of the safety followed by the chambering design of the feed ramp. Like you, got mine used at a gun show for $200 including the bayonet 🙂 I became a #4 buck fan 20 years ago; hit center-of-mass and it's going to leave a mark.
I agree with you, the location of the safety is what did it for me. I'm right handed but an left eye dominant so I close my right eye so I shoot rifles and shotguns left handed. The safety in the middle works for me and the rest of my family that shoots right handed.
Have a cousin who was an ER doctor in a large US city. He said bird shot is a man killer, he said he never seen someone shot with it at home defense range survive. He said there is no way to to patch someone up before they will bleed out be cause of how it shreds the flesh.
My cheapo Benelli pump, has 7 in pipe , one chambered. #6 birdshot.That is alot of shredded.

This Sheriff seems to be one of the good ones. Don't make the mistake thinking that all or even a majority of Sheriff or Police in Missouri or anywhere else are honest oath keeping public servants. Just a example would be Forte from Jackson County, MO. A true Oath breaking coward, and an embarrassment to all good police. Record police everywhere, document and expose so we can help the good ones stand up and do the right thing. God Bless all the oath keepers, they truly have a very difficult time ahead.

Waaaay back when I was still young, we used to carry the Rem 870 for boardings. In our range training, we knew that of the 9 pellets of 00 Buck, at least one would be a flyer, landing somewhere off the targets torso. What the Sheriff is saying is truth. If you are going to carry/use one of these, TRAIN with it. They are superbly reliable, easy to repair, and easily modified.
And train by AIMING not pointing Goober....so what he says is BULLSHIT

Don’t forget overall length. It must be 26” or longer muzzle to butt. That’s how they got Randy Weaver. He cut the barrel to 18”, but the stock was short and the overall length was below 26” and he was charged with a felony.

@benthere404 I messed with pistol grip shotguns back in my narcotics days to have a "non cop" long gun (if you want to call it a long gun).
It just wasn't a good fit for me. I found it much less comfortable to bring to a target. Now- that said, it had an 18" barrel....... overswing was a problem for me. The short barrel "pistol grip" stuff that's out there now may be a game changer.

Sound advice! Also, if you live in a neighborhood/area that is more densely populated, don't discount even smaller projectiles than #4 buckshot! Number 4, or 5, birdshot can be deadly at closer ranges, and you have a greater probability of not over penetrating common building materials found in homes today!

The same can be said for those that live alone in a rural area - really can't beat the penetration and rate of fire of a 1301 loaded with 7 federal personal defense slugs. Crooks will learn very fast there is a big difference between concealment and hard cover.
@@FC-qe1wlbirdshot is plenty at the right distance. It's hardly different from a slug within a foot of the barrel. At 15', it's still doing a lot of damage. And less risk of over penetration is a serious plus for some people.
Plus the sound of a pump shotgun racked in the dark is universal in any language.

Excellent advice with #4 buck. Used this loading in line of duty for several decades. Only additional advice would be to add a tension-adjustible two point sling and train with it in order to secure during transition if needed.
My unit in vietnam issued SAVAGE 12ga pump shotguns for ambush and VC control. Also the M-79 with 00-BUCK for search and destroy. 4th div. ARMOR RECON the highlands.

A couple months ago I picked up a Mossberg 590 in 20 gauge for home defense and I have a Remington 870 12 gauge already. I turned 74 on my last birthday and my shoulders aren’t the best. I agree with you that a good pump shotgun is hard to beat. I enjoy your videos and did subscribe to your channel.

My dad who passed away recently was a deputy sheriff from 1964 to 1989. In going through stuff I found a Mossberg 18.5 inch barrel. Went down and looked through the safes till I found his old Mossberg 500A. Serial number is a B prefix and it comes from 1969-70. Put the 18.5 inch barrel in. Fit perfectly. I strongly suspect this rode in his patrol vehicle for many years. Has some rust spots on that I am going to get cleaned off. Oil it up and then in honor of my dad time to thump some shoulders next time I am at the range.
The mossberg 590 shockwave barrel is 14.3 inches . With a crimson trace laser sight, it works really well in low light conditions.
It’s not considered a shotgun. It’s classified as ANY OTHER WEAPON so it doesn’t have the legal shotgun Federal standard he mentioned. You have a great tool there.
I'm going to clear something up for the serious minded adults here... A. Self-defense... what it is and how do you best prepare to defend yourself... 1: You make it impossible or as difficult as possible to get to you... How you ask, easy... you put in defensive windows and doors... that are impossible to breach... B You install a security system with both cameras and communication systems incorporated... C You have at your ready a fire arm... and access to a cell phone to call 911.... A bad person has to get to you to harm you.. if they can't get to you you are safe..
A 200$ shotgun is way cheaper protection. :)

I have a Mossberg 500 with the 20in barrel holds 7 rounds in the tube, has been my go to since I bought it in 2005. I own an ar15 rifle, handguns and still prefer the 12gauge. I worry about the distance a 5.56 round will travel and still be lethal while a 12 gauge delivers more energy than a 5.56 up close but doesn’t have the effective range. It’s to me the perfect tool for the specific job of home defense.
People hunt with .223/5.56 out to 500 yrds. The 223/5.56 is least likely go thru the walls of your house (the bullet tumbles when it hits hard objects), the shot pellets more likely will. Tom Gresham at Gun Talk says this has been researched.
I'm a 73 year old former Marine (1968-71) and keep a Maverick 88 12 gauge with #4 buckshot for home defense. Living in a mobile home in a rather large park means I have neighbors all around so, even though I have 00 buckshot on hand, I keep the #4 for use inside of the home. The shotgun is not my only gun, but it's the one I feel most suited for my particular situation. My AR is my Winchester Model 94 30-30.

So you say you are a retired Marine 68-71, how long in the reserves? Marines in Nam used M 16s after they had their M14s taken away.I was a Corpman attached to the FMF (tell me what that means) how do you go from an M16 to a shot gun, never in country.? AR would be any Marines choice that I know.

First off, I did not say I was a retired Marine as I served 3 years active duty. Boot camp was June - Aug. of 1968, Platoon 184 at Parris Island, SC. I was in the inactive reserve for almost 2 years after active duty and then finished out my 6 year military obligation in the PA Army National Guard as an 11Bravo E-5 Sergeant squad leader in an infantry company (C Co., 109 Inf. Reg). While in the Marines I got orders to WestPac after serving a year in El Toro, CA. From staging at Pendleton I was initially assigned to DaNang, Vietnam but about half of our company had our orders changed to either Okinawa or Iwakuni Japan. I served all of 1970 in Okinawa, serving as a 4083 COBOL Computer Programmer. FMF is short for Fleet Marine Force so I guess that you assumed I was not a US Marine. And as far a the shotgun goes, a 12 ga. pump shotgun makes more sense for self-defense in my particular situation. Semper Fi. @@miked.7722

I feed my alarm and it's faster than any alarm , 6th sense , auto lights don't come off yet but dogs know something is approaching

I really enjoyed this man's analysis of the shotgun as a defense weapon. Probably on of the most insightful i have seen. I built my own trench gun, minus the bayonet, and lugs from a remington 870. I even put the old original style "corn cob" foreend on it for better gripping purposes. I do keep it loaded with 1 1/4 ounces of number 5 copper plated shot, as this is not likely to penetrate walls.

Thanks, Sheriff, for this honest video. Six years in the retail firearms industry and a fair amount of civilian tactical training, and I tend to agree with your reasoning. I sold an awful lot of 12ga shotguns to a lot of concerned new gun owners, and I always felt good about it.
I totally agree with the man. I have a mossberg model 500 12 gauge. Shotguns have been proven in several wars to be superior and effective above everything else.
Excellent Post Sheriff, Practicality with reality. In 1967 when I went into business as the local gun store in a rural community, I knew folks wanted to arm themselves after civilian unrest and riots in that same year. Having experience in handgun training and believing with experience that home protection with handgun was a critical mindset training, So I started a training of the reality of using shotgun over a nervous shaking hand and inconsistent impact to threat using the Colt and B27 human silhouette targets. The Ithaca youth shotgun was the favorite for youth, small frame, and recoil conscience folks. When military guys ( Veterans) showed up with orders of deployment asking for home defense gun for family protection, handguns from 1911 45’s to Colt 25 automatics. Before selling any firearm, I took that time to step out back to the range to demonstrate the simple but complex if you are adrenaline charged issues with home protection. Removing the threat. After Q and A with potential user, we shot a couple of handguns including a revolver .38 special. Then the 20 Gauge pump shot gun. I then ask the potential purchasers to close their eyes and I racked the gun. The majority of thugs out there instinctively know that sound and pointing in their relative direction then firing, is certain injury maybe deadly. MOST often the shot gun was chosen over handgun. By the way the targets were on a wire that was advance toward the shooter starting at 21 feet and coming as fast as I could pull the attached line. Handgun hits I Or none out of 5 shots. 2 for 2 with shotgun and sometimes 3 . I always insisted the woman make the decision. Sometimes no sale and they would go to another gun store and purchase the gun the male counterpart wanted. A few instances over time after deployment the handguns were traded fo shotguns. Sheriff you video was professionally presented as any loving brother, father, or grandfather would do if not tainted with narcissistic attitude or over blown testosterone. All you're saying is, in the absence of training, long sight radius (shotgun) is more accurate than short sight radius (pistol). People should train and I don't know anyone who wants to train with a shotgun.
Your demo leaves out many other factors involved in selecting a home defense weapon.

All great points! Love the idea of using the target moving toward you to train. Real world application should always be the main thing. To wit, over the years when coworkers (primarily women) have asked me about handgun selection for self defense, I always point out that they need to remember that they need to "train" to use whatever they choose as they will be using it! I explain that you will NOT be taking your time and aiming each shot when using the handgun so you should train to point and shoot. Train to be comfortable with firing multiple rounds in a burst at your attacker/intruder. Remember that adrenaline will be a factor.

My dad was a cop and I still have his old Ithaca Model 37 Deerslayer. It has "Police Special" engraved on the barrel. Barrel is designed to shoot slugs and buckshot.

I use the low recoil OO buck loads. At 25 yards they print around 11 inch patterns.
Check your patterns with various loads. You will find one that works best from your shotgun. If the recoil bothers you, get a Kic-Ezz pad installed.
I don’t recommend using low recoil shotshells. When I was a police officer towards the end of my career, my department tried to utilize low recoil 00 Buck Winchester shells on injured deer from car crashes. They failed miserably on killing already crippled deer. I personally had a couple failures of those shells to penetrate deeply enough to kill the deer, which I was standing over! I was an armorer for the department, so had access to the old high brass 00Buck shells that we had been using before. I wrote up a memo to the Administration detailing my actions and why, and got them to approve switching back to the high brass full power loads. These loads were the old police loads, and some held 12 pellets, some 9, but they were accurate enough for close range work and hit a lot harder. Did they kick? You bet they did! But for home defense a person probably will be too excited to notice the recoil. Good luck to you.
Got my Mav 88 for 100 bux used...It had the Cruiser "Pistol Grip" which even with #8 BirdShot transfered every OUNCE of recoil to my Wrist. It was HORRIBLE...No way to get a followup shot.
Changed it out for 25 bux to a Mossberg 590S "Shockwave-style" Bird's Head or "Raptor Grip". MUCH, MUCH more controllable.STILL, I finally just found a used stock from a 500 series and settled with that...The Short Grips are just too punishing shooting either from the hip OR half-way forward from the shoulder. Advice...Just get a regular-style STOCK.
Also, the 1 3/4 inch short shells are interesting BUT 1)Have inconsistent patterns 2)YES, less recoil BUT have a tendency, even in a pump with the adapter, to leave the shell case jammed in the shotgun..3)Are EXPENSIVE when you can find them. (Aguila's sell for about 2 bux a shell in a pak of ten).
SO, learn to shoot #4 2 3/4 inch buckshot, with a regular stock and be satisfied.
OH yeah...The Sheriff mentioned hand-guns...100% agree with his assement on Home Defense. HOWEVER, me at age 69+ have joined the AR-15 "Nation" and now have a 7.5 inch 300 AAC "BlackOut" AR-Pistol as my go-to home defense weapon. MUCH quieter (Reason it was originally called "WHISPER" and that was even before some folks started suppressing them. Helps save my hearing)..Much less recoil....Full Power out of that short barrel at 7.5 to 9 inches, 30-cal loads from 95 to 220 gr. Sub to Super-Sonic. AND, now with IAAC and AMMO, INC making affordable ammo, my FIRST round Grab-n-Go home defense. Oh yeah, 20-30 rds per mag. The Shotgun is now my second level with the Pistol 3rd....

Great video Sheriff! I agree! I would add that the best birdshot size for defense in my humble opinion is #4. At close range it would act as a giant Glaser safety slug. Also a Shotgun has a great intimidation factor. Often You will never even have to pull the trigger. A Shotgun also helps mitigate over penetration issues avoiding collateral deaths/injuries.
That why in the old west when the town sheriff was called to deal with problem situations at the local saloon , the sheriff would always come with a double barrel 10 gauge as the peace maker because even a fast gun fighter did not want to square off against a shotgun with his six shooter revolver and other problems went away like Drunk Cowboys sobered up quickly, a gambler losing money at cards suddenly wasnt angry as He thought, when the prospect of being shot by the scatter gun was the other choice

As a retired LEO you are correct! Carried a revolver transitioned to semi automatic and polymer pistols. Along with 9mm or 45ACP pistols on night stand, the arm kept next to my dresser in bedroom is a Remington 870 loaded with bird shot. Because it can always be found locally.
Did they issue you bird shot when you were Leo? Of course not. Why go into a fight underpowered?

We have hard time finding any ammo unless you want to pay taxes on each round? Not to mention the 2nd amendment here has been trampled into the dirt making anyone who defends themselves including LEOs the offenders not the victims! I have seen too many good shooting turned into dog and pony shows for politicians. I still have rock salt in several 12 gage rounds. And consider them and birdshot less then lethal compared to 00 buck shot. And my better half has shot some great birds when I take her out with the boys. My point is what you grab your go to arm it has to work and work every time! No matter who grabs it?

I do exactly what you do with my Mossburg 88 12 gauge. Its in the corner by the bed. The spring loaded hammer is released with safety off and I have no. 4's loaded. I like the reason to release spring tension, because hopefully the shotgun will be ready to use for a long period of time and not make the spring weak if it had been cocked. Also as you said, you don't have to think when you've been asleep trying to find the safety, after whatever reason you grabbed the mind changer weapon. One other note is I don't have any small kids in our home either, but that's a parenting issue to keep kids safe. One other reason for no. 4's would be if you lived where other people could get hurt thru walls. I think it would be safer than double 0 buck ? Good video.
Paul Harrell tested different loads thru house walls and concluded rifles (AR15), slugs, and 00 buck over penetrates (many walls, think neighbors), birdshot doesn't, but the sweet spot was #4 buck (12 gauge) or #3 buck (way more common for 20 gauge). Unless you live rurally, that's a serious consideration.

I run number 1 and/or #4 buck for home defense, to reduce the odds of overpenetration. In my small suburban, single story house, a 7 yard shot is about my longest line of sight.
18.5" just in case. I've had my DIY shottie tested by US Marshal's and a local PD (my son had some issues with the law BITD), and both dept's commented on the extra 1/2 inch.
I've heard so many advocate the AR15 for home defense.
I live in an apartment. I need to consider my neighbors. I don't want to hurt one of my neighbors . I think a shotgun, with the right load , stands a better chance of not overpenetrating than an AR15.
It's been shown that jurors are MUCH more likely to convict someone in a self defense shooting who uses an AR-15, versus a pistol or shotgun. Prosecution paints the AR-15 as an evil assault weapon, and some people don't know any better.

@@briancaine9130 It's a semi automatic shotgun which operates with a gas system that absorbs alot of the recoil.

Was considering that top-of-the-line auto that Beretta makes but that is an outrageous amount of money to spend when there's so many alternatives that will absolutely do the job at one-eighth the price
I looked at a Beretta tactical autoloader at Grafs when I bought this Mossberg........ it was pretty darn cool, but it was also $1700......... as cool as it is, having $1700 gathering dust in my bedroom corner didn't seem as logical as the $200 pump gun.
I mean, cool is cool, but practical is real. The average person in the world can't afford to spend that kind of money on a home defense shotgun, so I try to tune my stuff to the average, law abiding person rather than stuff the average person will never own.
Just ordered a Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical from Exile Armory (they also have a youtube channel) for $936 total shipped to my FFL. The 940 is on par with the 1301 tactical at literally half the price. I also recently purchased the 590A1 and it is BY FAR the BEST pump shotgun I have ever owned.

Dropping the hammer so it can be pumped without using the release button is excellent advice. I hadn’t thought of that. I have a 20ga 870 youth with #3 buck in the closet and electric muffs on the my bed’s headboard.

I would like to add that you can purchase a forearm grip with a built-, in flashlight for most of the popular pump actions for around $100. You don't want to be looking for a flashlight and struggling to hold both and you need to be sure of your target and background in the dark

Im not arguing against 2nd amendment rights, I 110% believe in it... but its very sad that in this day and age, using a firearm no matter what the situation is, even in your own home for self defense, will almost certainly land you in jail. Our country is heading down a real bad path.
This is good stuff! I am a former LEO and a prior serving Marine, and one of my MOS's was as a weapons instructor. I cannot agree more about the reliability of a shotgun for self defense in the home. I see too many people dismiss the shotgun in favor of SBRs or handguns based on ammo capacity. The point the Sherriff illustrated about being wakened in the middle of the night and grabbing your defensive arm and shoot like you are bright eyed and bushy tailed at the shooting range is an excellent point. Your situational awareness, motor skills are all still rousing from your zzzzzzzz's. With a shotgun you can identify a threat after waking up, be sluggish and still land a good hit to stop the threat level.
And just to put a fine point on it, a lot of content creators and or know it all gun people, will review shotguns on their channel and suggest which one they recommend, and then dismiss a shotgun for home defense. Someone's critical thinking wires are crossed! What scenario is a shotgun best for if not "CQG"?! You're not using a shotgun to engage adversaries at 400 meters, they are for close range use, and the home defense protocol is where they excel at.

Rifle and pistol rounds can go through multiple layers of drywall especially if they miss hitting a 2x4 wood stud, so that can be quite destructive inside a home obviously.

I was air force security forces for 6 years and also a combat arms specialist, all combat MCS 12 ga shotguns were loaded with 2-3/4" 00 buck (9 .32 caliber pellets). Munitions guys and special TRF guys always carried them. 00 is universal just about. There is a saying we all learned "pistols put holes in you, rifles put holes through you, belt fed machine guns cut you in half, shotguns take parts off."
I was one of those "Munitions Guys." Strategic Air Command, Carswell AFB, 1984 -1988. Remington 870 for nuclear weapon close-in security (until we called you guys for a "sweep.") Awesome weapon, let's say I own more than one. SF was a thankless job, thanks for keeping things secure.

Amen, as one with over 3 decades in law enforcement, now retired, the pump shotgun is my number 1 weapon to have when I have to get up to investigate a noise in the middle of nigh, with a powerful flashlight. Mossberg has the Shockwave, which my wife likes, and I always been a big fan of the Remington Brand and have the Tac-14, loaded with 00 buck at the ready, with my Sig P220 as a backup... Everyone needs a shotgun, be it in .410-gauge, 16-gauge, 20-gauge or 12-gauge, it's all up to one's preference and what they can handle safely. I don't like birdshot, any of the buck shots would work and please if and when one need to protect themselves or loved ones, don't hesitate or be afraid to defend yourselves, especially what's going on today in this country.

I have a Winchester 1300 Defender that I bought for $200 loaded with low recoil 00 buckshot. It’s setup cruiser ready. I do have a 500 lumen light mounted on it. I found out it can fire the short 12 guage shells so I’ve ordered some of those (can’t find those on the local shelves). They have found some penetration problems with #4 buck with the target wearing heavy winter clothing.

I used to use #4 buck. I went to a class for armed defense personnel at Blackwater years ago. Their choice was #1 buck. 30 caliber pellets at 1400fps. It was a cheap load from a European manufacturer. Every pellet penetrated FBI ballistics gel to almost exactly 16 inches.
The group was tight enough that at 10 yards, all the pellets hit in a 2 inch group on entry. No human could walk away from that.

What I do like about a shotgun is that most home invasions still happen at night and most homeowners aren't ranchers (so think smaller houses or apartments). When the bad guy(s) are wide awake and you are just waking from a sound sleep, there isn't a lot of square footage between you and them. You want the max number of projectiles (#4 BK or larger) hitting on that first shot b/c the intruders typically don't like to remain in place for your follow up shots.

@@user-Cosmicplayhouse_Yes. Number 4 Buck is good for apartments/condos due to less mass and less chance for over penetration. Still penetrates great, but shells like 00 Buck can overdo it at least in gel tests. 00 Buck is great though if you don't have attached neighbors.
Retired Police Officer from Ohio. I have the Remington 870. I use it because I’ve owned one since 16 years old. I believe you should stick with what works. I’m going to have to pick up some #4 shot. Makes sense. Keep my 00 buck for backup!

Im a Maverick 88 owner. Over 11 years with one this month and a few thousand of rounds. Never an issue. Wouldnt mind a M590a1 someday, just for the cool factor. Know your pattern and switch to slugs if distance is an issue.
