I was at the funeral. It was the hottest day of that year, 1990, at 106 degrees. I was wearing a three-piece suit, and my wife kept urging me to at least take off my jacket, but I felt that would be disrespectful to Stevie, so I wore it the whole four hours. The service was beautiful, and there were lots and lots of tears. I can't believe it was over 33 years ago because it feels like only yesterday. Still to this day, I have never gotten over his sudden death, and I don't think I ever will. 🎸💙

He was one of a kind, imo just as good as Jimi on the guitar.

@@ROOTSMUSICHISTORYI just saw Jimmy in Denver open for Clapton in September. I don't know about anyone else, but when he did "Six Strings Down," I'm not ashamed to say it brought tears to my eyes.
      Great video as always!

Voodoo Child was the last ever song of Double Trouble’s set that final night at Alpine Valley. Stevie’s story definitely deserves the biopic treatment

Just started watching this episode ( I already watched part 1 ) and I had to pause to mention the following: I once saw an interview with Eric Clapton, where he was talking about the time he had Stevie Ray & Double Trouble open for his show. Eric stated that although he was well aware of Stevie's albums & loved his music, up to this point, he had never witnessed Stevie Ray & Double Trouble perform LIVE. ( Stevie always played conservatively on his albums when compared to his live performances. ) Clapton stated that as he stood at the side of the stage witnessing how amazing Stevie's playing was, it literally made Clapton scared to go on stage & perform afterwards. Clapton continued by saying: "Because here was this man, who did everything you could imagine on blues guitar, and not only did it perfectly, he did it better than anyone ever has, so how could I go out there & follow up to THAT".........I may not have Clapton's exact words correct, but I know what I'm saying here is very close. On with the video.............

I appreciated the work you did on this synopsis on SRV. What was especially interesting was the part where you discussed Stevie's dream. It's heart breaking. One thing you should view is the Mojo Tone series done with Rene Martinez Stevie's guitar tech. When Rene speaks of this night he shares the story of the light that was following Stevie around after the show. He said that post show it was relatively dark on stage and when Stevie was walking there was a light on him that did not seem to have source. He said it was so strange that he took note of it. There are a couple of other things that happened that night that were out of the ordinary that Rene shared. While I never knew him I sure do miss his music and the more I have learned I miss the person he was.

The relationship shared between Stevie and Jimmy remind me of another famous musical duo within that same sort of space, which was that of Duane and Gregg Allman. Having grown up in Macon GA, which is where I currently reside to this day, it personally feels like an honor, especially as a musician myself, to be living within about 200 yards of Duane and Gregg’s final resting place. I can practically see their gravesite from my front porch, and up until his untimely death in 2023, my next door neighbor was actually Otis Redding III, whom I’d known for over 20 years.

@soyburglar1878 I know of another brother duo that should be with this group, ... Toy and Tommy Caldwell of The Marshall Tucker Band. Their youngest brother (not involved in band) had just perished in an auto accident. Toy and Tommy also in the space. At stage- side, the brotherly bond could be seen. Stevie, Duane, Gregg, Toy &Tommy, we remember you in your music.

I was one of the first people on sight at the crash. Two very close friends of mine were lost in those early morning hours--Nigel and Bobby. If you have an interest, I would be happy to fill in some of the blanks and help with any of the unfounded rumors that I am aware of. Two short anecdotes: First. I had the sad task of taking Eric to the hospital to identify his manager's body. I also helped to verify Bobby's and Nigel's bodies.
Second, no official tour T-shirts were ever printed for that show, as had been the case for all of the other shows in that run. The supplier was unable [I don't recall the reason] to get the shirts printed & shipped. However, a group of Chicago gypsies had printed about a hundred bootleg shirts. Two of my employees spotted the bootleggers when they opened the box to make their first sale. All shirts were confiscated & turned over to the merch manager for the show. All of them were destroyed except for 4 that the merch fellow gave to me as a thank you.
    Cheers,
    Terry Cullen

I remember that day.I remember very vividly the huge knot I got in my stomach when the news announced his death. I was 4 years old.I just ran into my room crying uncontrollably.I first heard Cold Shot when I was 2 and have been a lifelong fan ever since. Every time I go to Dallas I visit his grave. My kids are being raised on his music too and absolutely adore him. We all love you SRV!

August 27th 1990 I would have been only 11 years old. Discovered Stevie Ray Vaughan only after he passed away. But oddly enough I knew his brother who was a member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds because I heard them on tv in 1987. Only 8 then.

I was at the last concert that night at Alpine Valley. The audience members who had witnessed an incredible night of music also woke to the news Stevie had died. It was surreal. It didn’t make sense and I didn’t believe it at first. All these years later I’m still trying to understand it. Unfortunately many of the details you discuss are incorrect or didn’t happen. For example, the concert announcement was not hush, hush. It was announced like any concert and tickets went on sale on Ticketmaster just like today’s concerts. It wasn’t a festival. It was two tour dates of Eric Clapton’s U.S. tour. I still have my ticket stub. It only has Eric Clapton’s name on it. Robert Cray and Stevie Ray Vaughan had been invited to join the tour for some of the concert dates. Not everyone flew back in the helicopters, many drove back to Chicago. I think Jimmie Vaughan didn’t fly. And possibly Double Trouble drove back as well. I could go on with the many inaccuracies, but I’ll stop here.

1990-Memphis concert--SRV was great. He talked a alot about 'god'. We kept waiting for him to credit JESUS as his 'god' who relieved his drug addiction & saved him. He never did. (In AA 'god' is defined as 'as you understand him' which is not the LORD at all. So many have been set free from the rules of AA; but never were saved)(for salvation by being BORN AGAIN (John 3.3, 33-34))--
