The Tragic Story of the Buddy Holly Plane Crash 😳

  • The plane crash that changed the course, not just of Music History but arguably of the United States of America. The Day the Music Died is about so much more than just Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson (aka the "Big Bopper"). In a lot of ways, it's about the loss of innocence in America as the nation would soon be faced with a Presidential Assassination, a Vietnam War, and more. Don McLean's song American Pie was written about this tragic day that a beachcraft bonanza charter plane killed these three young musicians. But what is the full story behind that fateful day on February 3rd, 1959? Join me on this episode of ROOTS as we dig up the events that led up to the plane crash, and the most chilling detail of all (in my opinion) about Tommy Allsup's wallet and the spirit of Buddy Holly making his presence known over 20 years later...(you don't want to miss that chilling detail so be sure to watch until the end).

Loved the video although The Big Bopper was actually 28 😊. Thank you for taking the time to remember these young men. 🙏

If I was in the studio and I knew Buddy Holly spirit was there I’d keep right on playing his songs and try to channel his music

I had to read that part a few times because I was surprised he said that, too! Haha! But I think the way the person reported it was too literal and there was that underlying humor beneath that comment :)

I enjoy and appreciate the work you do. I can tell you love what you do. As a 30+year flight instructor and a retired airline captain I'd like to gather some more information concerning the exact condition or reported weather, runway length, weight and balance of the Bonanza. The airplane in the pix is a V-Tail Bonanza. The early models such as this were nicknamed "Doctor Killers" Because of the V-tail the tail had a tendency to move or yaw left and right. That coupled with possible icing and if the weight limit is exceeded this was a recipe for disaster. This sets up a "STALL" situation. I'll reserve my opinion on the pilot but any combination of the above he should have never left, he was "Pilot in Command". Sometimes as a pilot you have to make the "Go/ No Go" decision.

Dion has a fascinating interview on TH-cam wherein he talks about being on that tour with the others. Waylon Jennings, as you know, spoke of the tour and the crash periodically throughout his career.
    Loved the Coroner Smilie sidenote.
Mick Jagger saw Buddy Holly. I wonder if the fact that the Stones are still going after 62 years, in spite of three deaths (Brian, Charlie, and Stu) in and of itself may be Divine Musical Intervention.
Great episode as always. Thanks for telling about ALL the victims.

Don McLean couldn't believe that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson lost their lives to dirty laundry. Here I am thinking of how Ritchie Valens lost his life to a coin toss. Or how Tommy Allsup's life was spared by a coin toss. 😬

Thank you so much for this interesting video with some details that aren’t discussed in other sources. However, some of the discussions that are depicted in the video as occurring plane side actually happened at the Surf Ballroom. This includes the conversation between Big Bopper and Waylon Jennings as well as the coin flip between Alsup and Valens. In addition, the weather forecast for the overnight period deteriorated and called for blizzard conditions. The updated weather was never communicated to the pilot. That meant the flight which was supposed to be VFR was actually IMC, for which the pilot had not completed training. In addition, the instruments on which the pilot had trained were different than those on the accident aircraft. I’ve researched the incident extensively and never saw any evidence that icing was involved. It’s more likely that the accident was due to spatial disorientation by the pilot from unexpected entry into IMC conditions, coupled with unfamiliarity with the Sperry artificial horizon gyro in the Beechcraft.

What La Bamba documentary are you talking about? I've tried to find it but all I find are results for the Biopic.

Well done! Also worth noting, there would be no Beatles without Buddy Holley’s Crickets (or at least not the name, “Beatles”).
In a candid moment, John Lennon explained that he liked the sound of the Crickets so much, he brainstormed other names of insects, and came up with “Beetles” spelled with an “a” to give it a double meaning, like Crickets is both the insect and the game of crickets…

2:43 Elvis had absolutely nothing to do with the 1987 biopic, La Bamba. It is a feauture film, not a documentary. Major flaw in this presentation

An ill-advised plane trip that went bad had nothing to do with a loss of innocence. Let's not get nutty with our theories. The loss of innocence in this country had more to do with the assassination of JFK and the Vietnam war. Let's keep this video within music history and not try to inflate it to anything else.

Full of factual mistakes, happening 1st Feb and not 3rd. Bopper was 28 not 24... The list goes on
