This was different from royalties from music publishing. This is all covered in great detail in Don Felder's book. It is NOT as detailed in the documentary The History Of The Eagles. That documentary is very biased as it was controlled by Henley and Frey. Don Felder was an EQUAL shareholder of Eagles LTD starting in 74. Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit were hired employees of the band. They are handsomely paid but aren't shareholders. After the Eagles stopped recording and touring in 80, the company remained without the band actively making new music or performing. The money was great but signing on for the contract position on the tour didn't dissolve his shares in the company. So when Don Felder decided to conduct his own audit of the company - which he was legally allowed as a shareholder, Frey and Henley voted him out of the company and fired him in 2001. Henley was so childish about this that he attempted to break copyright and publishing laws. When a double CD greatest hits Eagles collection was released, he attempted to change the song writing credits to push Felder's name last. When the songs were published, the writing credit had listed Felder's name first on songs he originated (Felder, Henley, Frey), such as Hotel California and Victim of love. But legal action had to be taken to restore the original and legal credits. Felder sued over being fired and they settled with Felder with an undisclosed amount. But watching Henley refer to Don as "Mr. Felder" with an attitude on the History Of the Eagles, you can bet that Don Felder was the big winner in that settlement. They also filed suit to block Felder's biography. Ultimately, the book did get released and it is a must read if you want more details and to hear his side of everything.

Now that it’s been PROVEN and documented that Don Henley has been lip syncing at the Eagles concerts these past few years, Henley will wish he had all that money back he spent for his lawyer fees. Disappointed in Henley for being so greedy.
He's 76 years old and is earning money he'll never spend. Rock stars are like everybody else. They need to retire before they embarrass themselves. Grace Slick said they should quit at 50, and she's probably right, but certainly by 70.

Great book ... Felder was very honest about it all. DF brought fantastic original guitar leads to the songs. Henley and Frey were never very grateful it seemed yet swam in money.
If there's any truth to the rumor that Don Henley has been lip syncing the vocals and maybe even more at the Eagles concerts there should be a class action lawsuit against him to claw back concert ticket money. He's starting to be known as Con Henley !
I would say that is probably widespread to even include Taylor Swift. She was at the least using a pitch assistant in the last live performance I saw her do.
Great musicians and songwriters, but Frey and Henley are both greedy assh**es. When they charged $200 a ticket for their reunion tour, I gave up on them. They broke the hippie code of sharing and brotherhood. They are dead to me.
And now it has come out that the people at the concert do more singing than Henly as he is lip-synching the concerts ("allegedly" - I'm adding that so Henly doesn't sue me).
Yeah I’m not sure these guys wrote anything. The wrecking crew laid down most of the tracks to most of the albums we knew of back in the day but that info has been closely held for decades. It doesn’t help that according to Bernard Purdie the Beatles had four drummers and “Ringo wasn’t one of them” so, unrelated example but all bets are off with all these bands now as far as I’m concerned. Eagles saw a market for there style of music. Buffalo Springfield and The Byrd’s were long gone. But there music was still popular. Eagles filled that market place with good and sometimes great music. The corporate part can and will spoil the enjoyment we get listening to the music.
After leaving the Eagles ..... Randy made approx $3m per year for decades, his ex wife got a big chunk but still it shows what a money tree the Eagles were/are.
Henley and Frey were both hard to like and as talented as they were they seemed to believe that the two of them alone were responsible for all of the Eagles' success. I always thought it was hilarious hearing Frey talk about Hotel California as though the guitar work of Felder and Walsh was just background noise.
Frey and the DON were the source of the friction in the group, which has come to light many times, now the latest about the miming in so called live performances, there is a clown in every circus, Don has the crown.
They owe Richie Furay for pissing off Randy Meisner before Poco even played a concert causing Meisner to quit and go to the Eagles--Meisner was a major component of their success. They owe Poco for all of their bass players for that matter.
A guy was shouting at a store and I told him to “take it easy”. 3 days later I got a cease and desist letter from Don Henley for copyright infringement use.
I saw him in concert about 10 years ago. The audience begged for an encore, Henley was in his limo racing out of town. He really showed his disdain for the crowd throughout the show. His voice was very scratchy and he explained he did a show in Las Vegas the previous night. Talk about getting the leftovers. I have a friend who’s the attorney who represented the lady who sued Henley for assault with the maraca. Henley’s legal team was dismissive of the accusation until my friend sent them a copy of a photo of a maraca in midair, bound for the camera. A settlement was reached.
Enjoyed your description of Mr. Henley. I had a lot of admiration for the Eagles back in the day, but have virtually lost all respect for them. One fact you might want to correct: Don Felder JOINED the Eagles in 1974 and played guitar to help rock out the Eagles. His run in with Glen Frey at a political rally is what broke them up in 1980. Felder was officially fired from the Eagles in 2001. Felder's book Heaven and Hell is a good read that fills in a lot of gaps in what Henly and Frey reported. There are always 2 sides to every story and somewhere in between, the truth.
Felder was a full partner. They signed a contract giving him one third of the corporation. When they cut Felder out of the band, they ended up paying him millions.
@rickjason215 at that time was one fifth as Leadon and Meisner both had equal shares. Both those members quit and left willingly giving up their share.
I've seen so many videos on DON and none have been good! I hope he does not sue you for this video you are doing here as it seems that will be another scenario soon! Great work here!
"The love of money is the root of many evils". Henley has always seemed like a deeply unhappy person to me. He must be trying to fill up the hole in his heart with $$$. It's ironic given his song "Gimme what you got" with the following lyrics "But you don't see no hearses with luggage racks".
I am a Texan, and I ALWAYS thought DH acted like the kind of jerk we Texans don’t cotton to!! He’s very talented, but i noticed through the years he came across as an arrogant, surly, self absorbed narcissist. i didn’t know about his liaisons with underage girls. I’m glad to know my assessment of him was spot on.
Back in 1980 I was working alone after hours in our company's conference room, when in walks Henley, Jackson Browne and our company owner. They were there to discuss some business and I'd just returned from Hawaii where the Eagles had performed not more than 2 weeks prior. I commented on that and Henley was very conversational and friendly. He didn't have to be bothered with a starstruck 20-year old struggling musician, but he carried on a one-on-one conversation with me for about 10 minutes. Not an asshole in the least. I also met Jackson (twice) some years later and in fact, performed with him at a benefit concert. You couldn't meet a nicer guy.
Joe was too good for them. He definitely moved to a lower tier of corporate musicality to find his niche with them. His humility is admirable. Too bad they were so unproductive and dysfunctional.
Candidate for worst lead-in ever. How could anyone not love Don Henley?: Henley has forever had a terrible reputation as a pretentious know-it-all and control freak who made working in the Eagles a nightmare for other band members.
Don Henley has always been an asshole, even way back before don felder days. But,to give the s o b credit,he was a hell of a songwriter, and a decent singer. Still,a total pri&k though.
Don is like a relative you love but don’t want to spend too much time with. Behind his reserve is a lot of greed and probably jealousy, too. That’s as fair as I think I can be with him.
Felder was fired from the Eagles in 2001, (he was hired in 1974, not fired) after which he filed various lawsuits alleging wrongful termination, breach of implied-in-fact contract, and breach of fiduciary duty.
“Henley called paramedics to his home on November 21, 1980, where a 16-year-old girl was found naked and claiming she had overdosed on quaaludes and cocaine. She was arrested for prostitution, while a 15-year-old girl found in the house was arrested for being under the influence of drugs. Henley was arrested and subsequently charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He pled no contest, was fined $2,500 and put on two years' probation “
Btw, I’ve listened to Felder’s book twice, even giving my old man a copy which he loved. Every oldschool fan should read that book. It also may explain why not much ado was made over Frey’s passing as was Bowie’s during that same time. 🤔
Superb summary. Very well put together and zero waste. You are brilliant! I've never been a big fan of The Eagles, except for marginally liking a few of their songs. I think it had to do with the vibes I got from Frey (RIP) and Henley. I always heard they were very arrogant dudes. Not to mention The Henley Lip Syncing events. Pathetic.
Don Henly is a dick. I presume he'll probably sue me for that, so let me add the disclosure that I'm stating my personal opinion. He's the reason that people can't use any Eagles music under the fair use act on TH-cam as Henly has people scan TH-cam for it and issue them strikes & take down requests. (Henly and Rick Beato testified to this in front of a congressional committee). This only serves to harm the propagation and adoption of Eagles music to new audiences. And now we are finding out that Henly lip-synches his concerts.
Why is it that when someone becomes a multi millionaire they automatically turn into a knob? He is still my favorite writer, singer, drummer, but he destroyed his reputation.
Have you ever seen Double Jeopardy? Loved it but I also had a major crush on Ashley Judd. Great podcast. I distinctly remember driving through Coldwater Canyon, which was basically a shortcut to the Sunset Strip and it was also where The Eagles lived during the mid to late 70s. Wow. A nonstop party, to say in the least. People coming in and out, but mostly young women. Groupies! They also played a big role in the rock n' roll music scene back in the day. Anyhow, I used to love Don Henley and the Eagles; probably saw them play live a handful of times and loved their shows, yet this was before finding out that Henley was a money-grubbing capitalist. About 15 years ago you couldn't find any Eagles songs or Henley's solo work on TH-cam while most major rock groups had no problem posting their music on the platform. But intellectual property seemed to supersede all else. Looking forward to your next chapter.
@@georgebarry8640 Yes I'm familiar with copyright infringement laws and publishers s and intellectual property clauses. And I also know that Don Henley 's net worth is $250 million dollars. How much money is enough? Answers will vary. Thank you for your input. Peace.
I recently watched a review of the recent Eagles concerts. Henley singing voice was analyzed by a TH-camr called Pegasus. He isolated Henley’s voice in two different concerts. Pegasus found that voice analysis totally matched. He said that could not happen in two different concerts unless it was a recording and Henley was lip syncing. I went to concert recently and it was great. I only found out this information after the concert. I was not close enough to see if it was syncing. Interesting.

I was/kinda still am a fan of The Eagles and DH. I'm also a boomer that works with 20-somethings. One day we were talking about music and I was surprised that they either knew of, or liked songs by groups like Pink Floyd, ELO, and Tom Petty. I was even more surprised when I got blank stares when I mentioned Don Henley, you know, the drummer for The Eagles? Sang "Boys of Summer...?" I remember when social media was heating up and fans were sharing videos, photos, or covers of his/their songs and he was suing everyone everywhere for takedowns. I'm pretty sure the result of that was wiping out the legacy and awareness of their work. Congrats, Don. You played yourself. I don't even hear your music at the grocery store. I had all of his record albums (look it up, kids) up to "Inside Job" and even -I- didn't know he released music after that!
I have always liked the Eagles and Don, but now hearing all these law suits, especially the ones that he abused minor girls, I think he needs jail time
As a former music publishing executive I have an issue with the suit involving other artists covering Don Henley's or any other of the Eagles songs. Once a song is recorded and released any other artist is entitled to record that song under what is known as " fair use", as long as they don't change or rewrite the words or music and a license is automaticly granted to the 2nd artist.
Well, I can't stand the guy. Great music, lousy greedy human being. Why on earth would you employ 60 people to scour the internet for a snippet of an Eagles song so it can be taken down? If I were Don I would do the opposite. Don't you want your work, your legacy, to endure for future generations? In 100 years, nobody will have heard of that awesome band. When testifying before Congress I thought the blood vessels in his neck would burst. Relax Don, you've been well compensated for your work by your fans. I was one of the biggest. I did a guitar tutorial on "The Last Resort". It was demonetized and removed 3 days later. Don't forget your meds, no one in your position should be that stressed, unhappy and angry on a daily basis.
I'll never forget the afternoon that I appreciated Don Henley's artistry. I had my walkman with me at the UW undergraduate library's cafe in the summer of 1985. I was studying, and Henley's solo track "Boys Of Summer" came on the radio, and the song really struck me as a great piece of songwriting. Something in it really struck home. That really is the extent of my being a 'fan' of Henley's work, as I never was much of an Eagles fan. That said, the lawsuit craziness just seems so plebian, so juvenile. Can't anyone get together in a room with others, shove their egos in a closet somewhere and just work shit out? You know, negotiation -- that lost art that no one on earth seems to know about anymore.
Don Henley's cruel behavior destroyed the good name of the Eagles, that's clear.. I still like Walsh and Timothy , they are classic man, especially Timothy, he was a friend of Randy . I saw Randy and Timothy singing together Take it to the limit with Richard Marx and his band. Awesome, even better than with the Eagles! It's on youtube. Love that❤
I saw the Eagles on July 6, 1975 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Loved the music but they all just stood there like mannequins. Even then I could’ve sworn they were lip-syncing because the songs sounded way too much like the records.
Dude has people watch internet sites and forces them to take down renditions of his music. A stupid thing to do, considering it would give him a whole new audience, most of whom have never heard of him or his music.
Don Felder joined the band in 1974. They broke up in 1980. Got back together in 93-94. Then after Mr. Felder and his attorney asked for some financials they fired him around 1999- 2000. Mr. Felder had every right to ask for the financials. He was the CFO of the business entity Eagles Limited. Please make a note on your video about some of your timeline mistakes.
I went to an Eagles show 30 years ago and Henley brought the whole room down with some story about how he was mad at the DJ's from the local rock station. It was at Tanglewood, near Walden wood and the song was big at the time and it had something to do with that. There was a block of seats for the people from the radio station and they were all empty because they were boycotting the show. If someone reads this and they remember, I'd love to know more.
Henley ruined the Eagles for me. God knows how many people he's cheated out of money. He seems to a control freak and and very unhappy person. If a hear an Eagles song I have to skip to another song, I can't listen.
Don Henley and The Eagles are Fucking Awful...That Country - Rock Sound is Sooooooooooooooo Sooooooooooooooooo Soooooooooooooo Effing Bad...But they were a very empty and commercial band that just wanted to make money so I am not and cannot understand why anyone would be suprised at all that the Sub-Mediocre Don Henley throws Lawsuits at anything that moves...

@@teastrainer3604 - I’m just waiting for the class action suit for misrepresenting a prerecorded performance as being live music. Seems like that could be viewed as fraud. If it’s not a live performance, they should have to disclose that so fans know what they are paying for. If it’s Don Henley miming the Eagles greatest hits, it should be advertised that way.

Great book ... Felder was very honest about it all. DF brought fantastic original guitar leads to the songs. Henley and Frey were never very grateful it seemed yet swam in money.
Felder's guitar work made many of their hits "listenable". He is really good and seems like an excellent bandmate.
If there's any truth to the rumor that Don Henley has been lip syncing the vocals and maybe even more at the Eagles concerts there should be a class action lawsuit against him to claw back concert ticket money. He's starting to be known as Con Henley !

Fortunately Glenn Frey gave up on his greedy ways. He had to give up his mortality to do it though.
They said the Sex Pistols were the “great swindle” but I don’t think they were alone.
Blame the gullible fans who gladly and willingly pay ridiculous prices. Go see a tribute band for a quarter of the price To see these greedy legacy bands.
Paul McCartney charged $1,700 - $450 for tickets. People are struggling and this signals absolute greed.

Henley and Frey were both hard to like and as talented as they were they seemed to believe that the two of them alone were responsible for all of the Eagles' success.
Joe Walsh said Henley is always pissed off about something

Just created a whole new mindset towards Don Henley !
Well it's about time.
They hired Felder in 74. They had no right to fire a partner. You have to negotiate the exit. That's why they settled with him.

Just look what they did to former band members.
You’re right about that!!!!
Don makes me glad I’m a nobody

The Eagles are lucky to have had Joe Walsh and Joe’s relaxed attitude.

I love Henley's music, but there are so many tales of his being a schmuck that they are hard to ignore.
Why is it that when someone becomes a multi millionaire they automatically turn into a knob? He is still my favorite writer, singer, drummer, but he destroyed his reputation.

I recently watched a review of the recent Eagles concerts. Henley singing voice was analyzed by a TH-camr called Pegasus. He isolated Henley’s voice in two different concerts. Once a song is recorded and released any other artist is entitled to record that song under what is known as " fair use", as long as they don't change or rewrite the words or music and a license is automaticly granted to the 2nd artist.
