If you keep up with gaming news, then over the last two years, no doubt you've heard about the infamous Amiibo shortages, where Nintendo has failed to supply the US with enough Amiibo to meet the fan demand. But is it really a supply issue or does Nintendo have other plans? How are Europe and Japan able to have enough Amiibo but not the US? And Nintendo has historically had a pattern of creating shortages in the United States. Today, I'm looking at the economics of the Amiibo shortages to see what's really going on here.

It’s 2019 now, and I’ve been able to snag a lot of “rare” amiibos lately. I even got my hands on a marth for retail price as of the day I’m writing this. How times have changed
I can find a lot of the rare ones in lesser known stores for around $20 while GameStop supplies newly made amiibo like Pichu and Ken for $15
Ironwolf 1 I was lucky enough to find Ike back when he was released. I also found a store near me with Mint condition Lucina, Roy, and I think even Marth.
When the price for Marth on Amazon drops from $40 to $15 dollars the day after you added it to your watch list:

I don't think this theory is accurate, i mean think about it. MatPat says that Nintendo makes prices of Amiibos lower then they can afford, but that's not the truth! Producing a single Amiiboo in factory in China probably costs less than a dollar, shipping also can't get more expensive than 1-2 dollars per a single figure because of the big amount of figures sent into different countries. So Nintendo already makes about ten bucks out of every single figure. And they are deffinetly not worth more than that, especially not 60$! You can pre-order some hyped (dark souls 3 for example) games for that price, and here you get a one character for a single game on Nintendo Wii!
+paladynTT Paladyn you are forgetting two things, the amiibo is not just a toy but also a program, it has its own data and works like a save file, where everytime you level up one in smash it records everything, it also has the data of a character and every game knows what amiibo you are putting, like splatoon knows when you are putting a mario amiibo and therefore denying it because it has nothing to unlock in the game, on the other hand an inkling actually has the correspondent data for the game and the game recognizes it

I remember amiibos being much more expensive here in Europe. I think I payed almost 40€ for my Robin amiibo at my local GameStop? And kindly remember that Euro is worth more than Dollar, so the number would be even higher translated into your currency.
That probably explains why Europe didn't have a shortage. But it's just plain weird that Nintendo would apply a completely different marketing strategy over here...

Nintendo is so ridiculous with how many amiibos they make. Good gosh they have every character from every one of their games even if they only have appeared for 2 seconds. For example, Pixel Mario? Gold Mario? Metal Mario? PINK GOLD PEACH? 4 different Yoshi's Wooly World Amiibos? I mean they are grabbing every cent of cash that they can get!

they marketed amiibo to sell problem is that products like the Wii should not have sold that much. Nintendo has a figure by YOU have to show demand to Nintendo... this is why pre-ordering is effective. as first shipments are always to satisfy the early adopters.

Yeah, but everyone has different preferences. Some people might like Metal Mario better than Classic Mario, Gold Mario, or Smash Mario. And the Pixel Mario comes in Modern and Original color sets, because, again, some people might like the original Mario better than the modern Mario.

I remember being so happy when I got my Wolf Link amiibo because there weren't that many and you could only get them with the game

They're really neat, at some point I hope to collect all of the Fire Emblem amiibo
you open them up? I only have 4 links (skyward sword, majoras mask, twilight princess and wind waker) smash bros mario, dark samus and richter (those latter two just came out) and a mario bros Donkey Kong. I love how they look in their boxes, but I know as my collection grows I probably want to have them in a case and actually use them in games. Just keeping them in the boxes for now while I make my mind up as I know I can get a device to emulate amiibo, so would never have to remove any from the packaging. part of me wants to handle them and maybe have one out sitting on top of my PC and stuff (probably the piranha plant)

I feel, it now being 2021, and many of the Amiibos I doggedly watched for actual retail release are now being retired before arriving anywhere within my reach. This is not isolated, but I'd love to hear an adjusted theory since they made amiibo less accessible Stateside, rather than more, regardless of your cashwads. In this case, it feels more like a breadline, and much of the States are hundreds if not thousands of hungry, amiibo-craving mouths late.
Good thing I sold my Wii U before Amiibos got released. I like collecting things as this would've made me broke in a minute.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... Let me make some corrections to this video.. First, it is Microeconomics, which is the study of of how firms and households make decisions using Suppy and Demand. Macroeconomics is the study of how Countries make economic decisions. Second a firm would be losing a lot of money if they under-priced a product, because as explained in the video all the firm has to do to increase demand for a product is lower the price over-time. So a company is losing equilibrium(minus) under-pricing per customer. The amount supplied is not going to change. Your theory makes no sense.
