Counter theory: sonic doesn’t know how big the world is, So he is better of choosing a way that Will bring him to the right destination, than to guess Edit: there is also the fact that he only read comicbooks and watched certain sports, he doesn't know this planet or should say this dimension. For all he knows the world is infinite and the city he is looking for is 6 planets away. From what we see in the beginning of the movie he doesn't leave the U. S.

This man went through a lot of dedication and time just to prove that a movie about an alien hedgehog who runs faster than the speed of light doesnt make sense........ This man is a legend.
The problem is, sonic would be caught if he ran. He needed the truck so he wouldn’t be seen on raders, by pedestrians, ect. AND dont say he didnt know. The best way to trick your enemy’s, is to trick your friends.
Yes, but in one of the shown clips, he ran to the Atlantic ocean, before he had started the trip. This proves that his legs were completely healed at the point in which he is expected to have left.
My guess is that Sonic knows he could *maybe* get to San Francisco on his own in a much quicker way, but if he did he could be taking the risk of Eggman or someone else finding him much faster if they read his speed level or something like that So he sticks by Tom’s side with the fake excuse that he doesn’t know where SF is because traveling by car wouldn’t raise awareness With the added bonus that he gets to spend time with his father figure But hey! That’s just a theory, a comment theory!
@@donutchan8114 "Ah, the planet sized plot hole. We didn't think you'd notice that...." Think about it too, he would have had 0% chance of failing to find it fast with those directions. They would put him right in front of the golden gate bridge, which he would recognize.

You aren’t considering sonic getting tired out, we know sonic has a need for sleep and food. Running like that nonstop would take an enormous amount of energy so he would have to take excessive brakes. Plus sonic is a curious person there is no chance he wouldn’t get distracted by something. You also aren’t considering robotnik and the government. Staying in the car is much less conspicuous than a blue blur running around the entire USA. He would definitely run into trouble and Probably more trouble. Plus he might get reckless without supervision. All in all the way sonic did was just much safer and better if you look at the logistics. Maybe I’m wrong IDK. BUt ThATs JuSt A THeoRy a GaME ThEorY.

I suppose the speed is something he has to turn on and off. When he’s using it, he can dodge. But if he doesn’t know the dart is coming, he can’t dodge.
I just sat here in this theory and I thought, “I didn’t think of that” So then I thought... maybe.. sonic didn’t think of that. It also could be that sonic wanted to spend time with the Donut Lord, and he guilted him into it or something. Idk. Those are just my first thoughts
He's a kid who wanted to spend time with a person he thought was a cool dude. He had lots of things he wanted to do before he left Earth. He wanted to start a bar fight, he wanted to do a slam dunk, and he wanted to make a friend. He didn't want to be alone.
Matpat: The CIA themself miscalculated the roadways in the world on their own website. What idiots. *The CIA forgetting that people don't know about the classified roads:* Oh, haha. You got me good!
It's very likely that Sonic would double back on himself while running. I doubt that he can remember the names of millions of streets. And running literal millions of miles is probably fairly exhausting. I wouldn't want to do that even if I were supersonic.
He said it took seven hours. He has more than twice that time to beat the car bc of how long it takes for the car to get there. He still has soooo much time
And when they watch THIS video, they will ad “Deleted scenes” explaining why he didn’t want to run around the world etc. “didn’t want to attract attention” or “didnt feel like it” lol
Yeah and does he never rest? how much can he run before needing rest, also route mapping gets exponential over intersections when you don't have a clue of your destination so no, even using only the biggest interstate roads I simulated an average of ~5 days using the clue of west using southwest it takes ~1.1 days
But that's assuming his speed is the lowest possible... In reality he's just too fast... And sonic spends most of his time running we don't know how much he needs to rest. We would be assuming here...
Can we all appreciate the fact that MatPat went out of his way to find the route that Sonic and Tom took to San Francisco, even though *there's a clip* in the movie of Tom *highlighting that same route* on his map? (About 20 minutes or so into the movie)
Gonna guess his electro-discharge comes from an emotional reaction not just "if he goes fast enough" we see this in the movie. He goes as fast as possible sometimes but doesn't discharge but then when he's emotional enough he does discharge. Perhaps the discharge and speed come from a similar place in his metabolism.
How MatPat went about finding this answer got me thinking. He calculated it using roads, and assuming that sonic would never use the same road twice. I think this logic skews the answer by quite a bit so i wrote a program to run a simulation of sonic traveling from Deer Lodge, to a random point, then to another random point, et c. until he found himself in or immediately around San Francisco. My program gave me an average of 8282 hours (~345 days) for sonic to randomly find himself in San Francisco over 1000 trials. I would also like to say
What about an optimized algorithm, or always turn left? That should do way better. Or if sonic spent like 3 seconds to find out it was on the coast, and just ran that.
@@piguyalamode164 idk, Sonic seems like a pretty care free kinda guy that always wants to jump right in. That's why I decided to just pick random points. Just pick a direction and go for a bit before going somewhere else. And I chose for him to have no memory of where he was before cause there's no way someone could remember exactly what heading they were going and for how long to figure out where they were and where they weren't. There are plenty of ways to optimize Sonic's travel, like covering one degree longitude then moving over but this is just a 'lets go somewhere where we don't know where it is with no reason' estimation. At the end of the day Sonic could just ask where San Francisco is
Why would he just go in random directions? If he has somewhere important to be wouldn’t he be more systematic? Wouldn’t he realize how often he had visited a spot? This is assuming he just goes places regardless of where he’s already been. You seem really dedicated to this but no matter how “care free” he is this still seems like a very very very worst case scenario. Besides didn’t whats-his-face give him a general direction to start in? Just saying that doesn’t seem to be the most accurate.
@@thestevens580 since it's a randomized spot on the planet the likelihood of him ever going to the same place twice is actually astronomically small but is possible. Best case scenario is him going in a straight line after getting directions, which he doesn't do regardless.
Good theory, haven't seen the movie yet. I do want to say however, that Sonic getting lost is a reoccurring theme from what I've seen. In a episode of Sonic X, if I remember correctly, he runs around the globe in order to find a specific place. And it appears, again if I remember correctly, Sonic's attention span is shorter than he is fast, as he runs in circles and zig-zags, it takes him an entire day. This idea has also appeared in other episodes of Sonic X, but it's been forever since I've watched that. Just saying that no matter how unbelievable it's predictable.
*These comments:* sonic would probably go over the roads more than once *matt:* literally calculated every roadway on the planet *me:* i think its covered ya’ll
Alternatively: Sonic has some real intense ADHD and upon his first plunge into the Pacific because he quite literally went due west from his current position, the RSD and time blindness kicked in and he didn't like the idea of looking for an indefinite period of time for these Really Important Things That He Had To Have Right This Second.
Or consider: Who Would want to actually run all the roads in America? Like, I know absolutely nothing about Sonic but running that fast must take a lot o energy, right? And it would be just as tedious from his perspective as it would be from ours if we did it, no matter that it would only take him a few hours - that's still much longer time spent than the average run for excercise.
@@coryfan5872 Well that's assuming he only runs them once. In actuality, he would likely run multiple roads multiple times, as there are dead ends, intersections with an odd number of connections, and the whole traveling salesman issue of even finding the optimal path in the first place.
you can really tell how late they edited the numbers on the speedometer based on the sloppy editing on the numbers showing this isnt most likely a film theory fan but rather a person who just heard about this through social media etc

Even if Sonic knew he could get to San Francisco faster than if he just took the road trip with Tom, I think he would still have gone with the road trip because he's always wanted to bond with humans and that would be a great chance to.
There is one major factor you didn't include: Sonic has a serious case of ADHD. Without Tom to keep reminding him what he was supposed to be doing, he would have gotten distracted by absolutely everything and likely forgotten there was something important he was supposed to be doing. He could easily spend a whole day in every city he found. And as for the building climbing thing, most of what he did in the climax he was figuring out on the spot.
@@SamIAmWich If it could be something else it isn't really representation for ADHD. Sonic is a fantastic example of hyperactivity, I'm just surprised he didn't need to be slowed down like in the movie "Epic".
In Germany we have a saying: "Der Weg ist das Ziel" Which roughly translates to: "The journey is the goal" Which implies, that it is not only about how fast you reach your goal, but more about the way you do. And i think, that sonic could have achieved the goal of retrieving his rings faster alone, but was retrieving the rings really his only goal? No, it was not.
Here's a theory: Even though Sonic's Quill has unlimited power and can propel Robotnik's ship to sonic speeds, Robotnik can't REACT at the same speed as Sonic, so the second they both go supersonic, and Sonic takes a turn, Robotnik wouldn't be able to react in time and would crash. Very simple, but would end the whole movie.
suicune2001 not really buddy. You see, even if your mind can process information at a MUCH faster rate, you still need to train your body and condition it to react to that information. This is why a martial artist is able to react faster than a regular human
He rounded up though, which means he final result would have Sonic going even slower in a calculation where he was already assuming a worst case scenario. So keeping it at 3.9 would've just meant Sonic cleared the world even faster.
if Tom had only thought to tell Sonic, "go west till you reach the ocean, then go south, you'll eventually find it," that would've been the end of the movie, and Sonic would've ended up on Mushroom Planet while Robotnik used his quill to conquer the Earth. Good thing that didn't happen...
I feel like sonic could have run on water well he would have to to run around the entire world so I’m assuming that’s he’s about the same weight of dash from the incredible and dash only has to run about 90 miles per hour to run in water so ya sonic could have just ran across water when he could really go fast without having to worry about people and animals so it’s probably even shorter then an hour he ran west and then started running in the oceans and eventually found San Francisco because we have a huge red bridge kinda hard to miss
"That manipulative little hedgehog" Or perhaps he went slow on purpose because he wanted to make a new friend? Sonic's a kid for crying out loud, he's been alone the majority of his life since he lost Longclaw to the Echidnas. He wasn't tricking Tom into thinking he was important. In fact, if they didn't go on that road trip in the first place, then he would've left Green Hills for good and Sonic would've never gotten the chance to make real friends. Not only would Sonic be an easy target for Robotnik, had he not met Tom nor made his presence known to the people of Green Hills, they wouldn't have come to his rescue near the end of the movie. Sonic is aware of his powers, but he wasn't using it to trick anyone (unless it's Robotnik). In the end, he wanted to use it to protect the people he cares about, his new friends/family.
To be fair I saw someone talking about how this seems like it was a pre-existing script repurposed to include sonic which would explain why the decision to put sonic in a car
The problem is: Sonic is a living thing you know, he needs breaks and he wouldn’t concetrate enough to only run. He would probably visit every place that he is interested in. Like a little child that asks her mom if he could go to a toy store. My opinion, maybe im wrong and still is better than the trip in car and you discussed the worst case scenarios
I think your right, after all sonic in this movie is alot like a child with how he acts, so he'd probably easily get distracted AND would also need to take breaks therefore it'd most likely take longer in generel in my opinion
@@OnlySayori he ran over 1.6 thousand kilometres in 4 seconds I think he'll be fine and also matpat wasnt saying his top speed in the movie for all we know sonic could get to san francisco in under an hour
You're assuming that he has some kind of impossibly huge memory, and knows every way he has seen. He may go multiple times through each street, or even get lost, start running outside of roads...
I was gonna point that out, but he is also assuming he doesn't read road signs or even ask to borrow a map. So its just really just a purely unrealistic scenario
That and even running the whole world hes faster so I think him doubling some roads in america or west of where he was puts him well within the time frame
Kalispell native here: how did I miss this episode till now XD I always assumed it was just a reference to old Kalispell - that is the one longtime native remember before blowing up. Good ol days.

Edit: there is also the fact that he only read comicbooks and watched certain sports, he doesn't know this planet or should say this dimension. For all he knows the world is infinite and the city he is looking for is 6 planets away. From what we see in the beginning of the movie he doesn't leave the U. S.
But logistically he ran 1,100 miles in 4 seconds from Montana to the coast, the edge of our country, and back.. on a whim. he could easily run across the us to see how big it is, and come back in half a minute.
@@chiot888 yeah, but he might think that the us is one small island and that the city he is looking for is on a completely different island very far away.

My guess is that Sonic knows he could *maybe* get to San Francisco on his own in a much quicker way, but if he did he could be taking the risk of Eggman or someone else finding him much faster if they read his speed level or something like that

Staying in the car is much less conspicuous than a blue blur running around the entire USA. but it's not like he will go over every road exactly once. This is the traveling salesman problem, but on a scale that's pretty incalculable
Yeah and does he never rest? how much can he run before needing rest, also route mapping gets exponential over intersections when you don't have a clue of your destination so no, even using only the biggest interstate roads I simulated an average of ~5 days using the clue of west using southwest it takes ~1.1 days
But he's also probably going to get to San Francisco before going to every single other road in the world. So it balances out.
@@ZachariahMBaird No it doesn't balance, I simulated the travel (see my comment)
But that's assuming his speed is the lowest possible... In reality he's just too fast... And sonic spends most of his time running we don't know how much he needs to rest. We would be assuming here...
It’s also unlikely that he’ll travel on every single road

Funny thing is that sonic wouldn't be able to turn at top speeds. He probably could turn at around 600mph
@@rachelmoody1520 Even with breaks that double the time, running all the roads in America would be far faster than the road trip.
@@coryfan5872 Well that's assuming he only runs them once. In actuality, he would likely run multiple roads multiple times, as there are dead ends, intersections with an odd number of connections, and the whole traveling salesman issue of even finding the optimal path in the first place.

@@Gihad97 Sonic is a hedgehog so it's probably a much smaller fraction of calories compared to the flash.
There is one major factor you didn't include: Sonic has a serious case of ADHD. Without Tom to keep reminding him what he was supposed to be doing, he would have gotten distracted by absolutely everything and likely forgotten there was something important he was supposed to be doing. @@CaptainCat101 it's a waste of time

And a car runs out of gas as well :), sooooooooo
@@Matick125 it'd be faster then a sonic that'd be distracted and sorta tired
@@OnlySayori you run out of gas in the middle of the road and you got to push it to a gas station sooooooooo
MatPat: You took the videogame character known for running to fast and you put it on a car.
Team Sonic Racing: ...

I mean in team sonic racing, sonic probably did that so the other characters had chance at the race
