I got a ps3 from a pawn shop for 50 dollars. It was an orginal ps3 model that can play ps2 games. The pawn shop said it didnt turn on so i bought it and brought it home. When i got home and plugged it in, i turned the switch on the back on and it booted up. It was on the orginal firmware from 2006. I put a game in it and the disk drive laser was broken. I bought a new disk drive and opened the ps3 (this ps3 has never been open) and there wasnt a single piece of dust in this thing. I changed the disk drive and now it works. I put a 1tb ssd in it and it plays ps1, ps2, and ps3 games. What i can tell some bought this on launch or close to lauch and the disk drive broke and then they just put it in a closet and left it there until they pawned it in. When playing the last of us, the fan doesnt even ramp up. This thing is silent.
Update on my PS3: After the thermal paste arrived this morning, I used your video to disassemble the console, get the new paste in there, a new 2032 battery, and to put it back together! Only had to drill out one screw! Thank you so much
my ps3 is jailbroken with evilnat 4.89 and a 1tb ssd and my fan set to 50% to help keep it cool i also tore my ps3 completely down like you and repasted it
I don’t get why some consoles are so dirty, do people not regularly clean their things? Ive never had a console break on me. My Ps1 still going strong.
Found a decent condition ps3 slim in an electronics recycling bin, refurbishing it rn and looking forward to playing some red dead redemption and final fantasy XIII 😊
Perfect! Don’t worry about delidding the cpu and GPU chips unless it fails to boot, what I covered here should sort you out for a nice deep clean and general maintenance!
@@EverythingPSPOfficial nah it works perfectly fine but I still want to do a repaste and a deep clean just for preventative maintenance. I'm waiting for the thermal paste to arrive so I can come back to this video
Good god, was that PS3 dug out of Pompeii!!? And that human slime on the hand controller😅. Looks like it was a big job but successful in the end. Great job.
Just about! Unknown origin so it may have been buried for some time, if only you could record smells it definitely had a questionable odour upon initial opening 😬
Thanks 😊 it’s still working great we use it all the time as a media centre and for gaming, I also have my original ps3 slim that I need to refurb at some point and will be more thorough with that after this learning experience
Submerge as much as posible in very warm dish soap and water to get the console clean with less effort, then you can just air dry it for a day. Also nowadays you can buy electronic spray cleaner for car parts to clean all the electronic components without a problem, so long as you give them some time to dry.
Thanks thats great advice, I scrubbed everything by hand with ispropyl alcohol. The corrosion is extensive in this one but I'm happy to report that it's still going strong and sits in our lounge on the console rack and gets use a couple times a week mostly to play super rub-a-dub :P
I once got a ps3 from a dodgy pawn shop for cheap. When I tested the console it had the yellow light so i returned it and when the guy tested the ps3 it displayed the yellow light on the first attempt but then worked on the second. I reckon it had dying NEC Tokins that finally got going after a few attempts but I still got a refund anyway
Hi Hassan, you are absolutely correct it was definitely the power supply most likely the caps, I opted to replace it but I have kept the original and may end up recapping it in future if required
i bought cechk a bit of time ago, and it was pretty dirty, but it was checked inside, anyways the worst thing was that it wouldnt read any discs at all, now i just use an CECHL
Had I had those on hand I would have tried this too, although I’ve been told before that the static from vacuuming can cause damage to electrical components idk how true that is
Awesome video ! Bit of a strange question though. I was cleaning my old ps3 awhile back, but noticed after I unclipped the ribbon cable for the USB Controller/Blutooth board from the Motherboard (The one with the brown clips) I haven't been able to get them to clip back and was wondering if I've broken them. Is there any specific way to clip them back or just use a bit of force ? Just worrying about damaging it, if I haven't already 😅
Try pushing down the connector one side at a time sort of wiggle it in, it can be stiff but doesn’t require too much force, check the pin socket for obstructions. Bit hard to say without seeing it but make sure the connector clip is in the off position (up) before inserting the ribbon then clamp it down
Good job but one thing try next time clim more the but in 22m41s you see the dust in the board you tike a big shower for a perfect clim just one advise for help 😆
Ok thanks! I would have opted for an iso bath but for fear of breaking any components I chose to tread very lightly and only address any problematic dust. Will keep this in mind for next time thanks for watching

Nice video, watched from start to finish. Have you ever tore it apart since and replace the paste on the actual processor die etc? Just curious as my Fat PS3 is original and never had any work done on it and i think it's running hot.
Its very risky to delid the PS3 and the process has a chance of ruining the whole console even for professionals. I would generally recommend using custom firmware to get the actual temp readings inside the console first, and you would probably find that just by cleaning and applying thermal paste like I have done in this video will satisfy your requirements.
@@EverythingPSPOfficial after installing the custom firmware can you go back to the original again? Are there any articles online somewhere that describe where to get the firmware and how to do it Etc
