- This is the thirty-ninth in a series of videos I’m going to produce to document the building of my Trumpeter 1:200 model Titanic. In this episode I cover the following elements:
Working out the appropriate voltage to run my lighting circuit off.
Cutting various holes in the boat deck for smoke extracts and staircases.
Testing the smoke generator and the funnels.
Showing the 3D prints for the for and aft grand staircases.
If you want to see more regular updates have a look at my Instagram page (same name as the channel). I post photos as I'm building there so you don't have to wait for the videos to be edited!

Your work is amazing, you and your work are the definition of a W
I’m getting this model for my bday because of ur channel thx 🙏 also at 4:20 those are some epic socks 😂
Love that you use a Mont Blanc
Stunning. I`m impressed. It was a beautiful creation for sure.
Thoroughly enjoy your videos! Amazing attention to detail. You even gave us a glimpse of more than your hands feet during your outdoor painting session, lol! Thanks for posting all your hard work!
That's alot of great work my friend, I'm very impressed about how you have gone about this build. There is so much detail and effort that you have put into this beautiful lady. Now that I've seen the 3d printed forward and aft grand staircase pieces, I am excited to see how you detail these components. I'm so looking forward to seeing your work on these very important components of the ship.
While the smoke looks better if you cut the pipes down what will happen is the smoke which is water vapour will condensate and form water droplets inside the funnels, this will then find its way into the ship and maybe on the the electrics. I have had this happen to me on one of my models. which became a problem.
Yes I suspect that might become an issue at some point. All the electronics in the ship are relatively well waterproofed but it may cause damage to the small details
16:22 unfortunately that’s just how the trumpeter kit is. I didn’t sandpaper my boat deck and placed the boat deck housings accordingly and the a deck and boat deck sky lights still don’t exactly line up. You may be able to actually fix it!
Absolutely awesome socks.
lovely model so far!
Loving this series!
I hope you can assemble the stairs without too much difficulty, you have made good progress in the construction of the A and B decks, the lighting too, and there is a bit of surgery to be done in the decks to position them at the correct place, so that they are vertically above the domes. I did a little tutorial on the FB group a few weeks ago, I had some difficulties that I explained, it can guide you. I quickly want to see them in your construction that I admire, I have not yet started what you have finished! :)
I’ve just looked over that tutorial! And the other one you did on the getting the ceilings of the lounge and writing rooms correct! Superb work, those high ceilings will look really good once it’s all done.
I think I might give your ceilings idea a go. The more I look at it the more I think that will simplify my lighting circuit. I’ll defiantly use that info on fitting the staircases too!
Thanks for the heads up on these tutorials 🙂
Great work!
Morning Rob are you not having some blanked out windows on your decks as not all cabins would be occupied at the same time. Also dont wish to pick fault because the model looks amazing, but do you not think the smoke should be alot darker .
Hi, I will be blanking out a few windows as we go on. I just need to do a bit of research into which cabins were not occupied.
Yeah I was actually looking into this recently. From what I’ve found there’s not that many ways to make dark smoke. The other thing is what goes up must come down! I probably could put dark food colouring in the smoke oil or something like that but the issue is that would then fall down onto the model, and the cleaning would be horrendous!
So although darker smoke might look better I think it would make the model look 30 years old quick!
I wish I had half the skill you have! My build is gonna look like 3 year old did it compared to yours.. love your work!
Hi Rob, yes all good stuff! Just wondered if the Scaledecks boat deck pieces could be used as templates for some of the positions for the remaining superstructure? I am going to enclose my main hull lighting inside a piece of domestic wiring conduit to stop light leakage. I am going with hundreds of fibre optics to the portholes as I will have the space to do it! Great work though and the staircases look great, but how much will be visible past the first level! I will watch with interest! Nice detail bits coming up soon I suspect! 😀JH
You'll have to do Olympic then Britannic.....maybe even Gigantic lol
Apparently White Star considered a fourth sister to replace Titanic.
if you look very closely you can see a small gap between the deck and the first floor cabin this is a £400 kit it should be perfect all the parts should fit without any gaps
To be fair that might also be partly due to me, I haven’t permanently stuck these decks down as yet. That’s a job for future videos!
Really enjoying your video series even though I haven’t modelled since childhood.
Idea for you….
Have you thought about adding some ambient sound effects with a couple of small speakers onboard? The hustle and bustle, hum of the engines and the band playing etc.
Hey, thank you for the comment! Ever fancied taking modelling up again??
I have thought about it. I don’t think I will in the hull useful. I’m not sure I have the space. I also don’t think the acoustics will be great coming from inside the hull!
I am tempted to have some speakers in the display shelf that can play a loop. As you say engine throb, and the occasional waft of the band coming over the water!
What did you use for your smoke generator?
use action electronics voltage reducer, cheap and very adjustable 12v down to almost zero regards phill
Good evening how are you ? I'm a beginner and I would have liked to know why you varnished the wood veneer. Can I use the tamiya TS 80 for wood veneer? Thanks in advance for your answer
Hi there,
I’ve varnished them because it just gives a bit of protection from water and just makes them a bit more hard wearing. That Tamiya paint looks fine, enamel is the best for this because it’s the hardest wearing :)
@@TheModelBoatGuy Thank you very much for your answer. it's very nice. Best wishes 🙂
Hi great videos :) can I ask what smoke generator you used please :)
Will you be getting the Lego titanic model coming out!?
Another great update.
Surprised that you chose not to use the New Chinese release for the forward area of B-deck/A-Deck railing or bridge.
Also, won't your voltage calculations change when you install your boat deck lighting?
Just can’t afford any more added extras on this model I’m afraid! I’m lucky to have been sent a few for free. But I can’t really spend any more on this model now! I think with the KA additions the bridge will look pretty good.
Yes the electrics will change a bit, but it will only be the current that changes, as the more LEDs I add the more the current draw. It was the voltage I was looking at really and that will remain constant (though I wont buy a power supply till I have all the lights on the ship as I need to know the max current)
@@TheModelBoatGuy As someone who owns both sets, I do think that that Chinese bridge is a huge and noticeable step up in terms of detail. I'm a mod on the Facebook page. I'm pretty sure we can hook you up with one. I'll talk to Gene about it.
@@chrisnicholson2407 that would be great if you could. I’ve seen the pictures of it and they do look pretty special. Did you find it relatively simple to assemble?
@@TheModelBoatGuy Yeah, simple enough. Definitely more simple than fiddling around with microscopic KA pieces. The hardest part is removing it from the resin sprue. And for that I've discovered the best trick is to use a hot electric woodcarving knife from a hobby store. Slices through it like butter without the aggressive vibrations of a clipper that can cause cracking. Also, I talked to Gene and he would be happy to send you one as long as you talk about it in your videos.
Ah ok, yeah the Ka set is good but crikey some of the pieces are just desperately fiddly. It’s at the point where I have to think will the model look worse once I’ve put them on because they’re so fiddly.
Yes I think that’s the way with these resin parts, hot knife!
That would be amazing if you could, very happy to feature it in the videos or do a review on it 🙂 thank you for sorting that
What voltage are your LEDs if you dont mind me asking? The strips and the micros?
Currently they all run off 12v or battery voltage.
I’m currently investigating reducing them down a bit though to reduce the brightness and make the ship look a bit more realistic for 1912
Great video, loving this series! Random question, but where did you get the harland and wolff esque sign from? I'd love to have one myself!
Ah yes, I got that from a company called Shapeways.
Basically I designed the thing myself on Solidworks and then sent shapeways the CAD file to print the design for me.
They do produce Harland and Wolff signs too, but I fancied something more personal to me. Here’s a link to the H&W sign though:
www.shapeways.com/product/QTSDTPZ3Q/harland-wolff-shipyard-logo?optionId=181992448
@@TheModelBoatGuy Amazing! Thank you so much for your quick response 👍
I forgot to say how I cured this problem. in the end I found that if I slowed the generator fan speed down it fixed the problem but I had to renew the pipes back up to the top of the funnels
Phill
Ah ok, as of now I haven’t ran the smoke for a large amount of time so I haven’t yet experienced this. I think once I’m at that point I will have to investigate a bit more. If needs be I can slow the speed down quite happily
It’s a tricky thing to make smoke effects on the Trumpeter Kit. So what’s your secret?
It wasn’t too tough actually, I think there’s some videos earlier in my series when I cover the smoke system
Thank Yours very much.
Do you think you would get a new lego titanic
Nah don’t think so, don’t have the space for two 1:200 Titanics! It’s a nice looking set though
I wish i have thos model rc
1 dislike come from iceberg
Anybody out there contemplating building a radio controlled iceberg?
Don´t give me Ideas XD Imagine his Face. He drives his Titanic and sees me (or you) controlling an Iceberg near him.. Don´t get me wrong, i would never ram his Ship, way to much work in it. But i really enjoy the Idea. My Humor exactly :-)
new video :)
All looking rather splendid, but all that electric, electronic do-da....that's all a bit witchcraftery. Glad you know what you are doing, it would have gone up in flames by now if I put my grubby mitts on that 🤣😜😂
Haha always something else to learn. Electronics is great fun, not that I am biased at all
Set the lifeboat and make a special video on lifeboat how to make I was watch your old lifeboat video but you did,nt tell
Yes
Maybe I should sent you my 1/350th Titanic Model and ask you to build it for me Maybe.
If you put this thing in a 200 gallon tank, with ice floating all around and 1500 miniature figures in the water, then we'll talk realism sir.
Haha well if you put it like that I am a way off!
@@TheModelBoatGuy LOL. Cheers! Great job on the ship.
