- Build all 6 of these beautiful rustic dining room chairs for less than $100! This video goes through a detailed “how to” tutorial of how to make 6 dining room chairs quickly and affordably. If you decide that you only need 4, simply make 2/3 the cuts that I mention in the video and you’ll be able to easily do so. If you build 4 chairs, you could potentially spend around $50 if you shop around for the lumber and have some of the hardware already lying around. I have a detailed material listing in the first minute or so of the video. Anyone who watches this should very easily be able to build these. Chairs are a little more labor intensive than a table, but building them yourself can save you a lot of money. Check out my video, and you’ll see that you can build them too!

Angle edges from 20” down to 18 3/4”
(In other words, mark 5/8” in from the two back corners and make a line from those to the two front corners)
6 @ 18 3/4”
Angle edges down from 18 3/4” to 17 1/2”
(In other words, mark 5/8” in from the two back corners and make a line from those to the two front corners)
Notch the ends 2” deep and 1 1/2” wide
2x4s Legs and Chair back
12 Pieces at 38.5" (watch the video for details on cutting these out)
12 Pieces at 16.5" These will be the front legs (Rip these down to 2" wide)
2x2s seat back and bottom bracing
18 @ 14.5”
12 are for the chair back (horizontal supports)
6 are for the bottom bracing (middle) put one pocket hole on each side of these 6.
12 @ 15”
These will be trimmed to fit and pocket holes will be added. Watch the video for details.
1x3s bracing for seat top and chair backing
12 @ 14.5” (front and back seat bracing)
Need 2 pocket holes on each side
12 @ 13.5” (side bracing)
Need 2 pocket holes on each side
18 @13 inches (vertical portions of the chair back)

Hahaha although I knew an old school.wood worker who had a concret company do a super level 10x15 spot on his floor. Hahaha these guys he hired had a laser leveled self guided rig to get it ultra precise. He did large batches and said he was to old to climb on a big table. He would mass assemble like you did on this project. Worked for him he was always backorder.

A dowel and flush trim hand saw work great for filling the kreg holes, and a lot cheaper. Awsome project. I will be building a set of these soon. Oh and you can dilute Elmer glue down with water to a paint consistency and paint it, wait about 30 to 45 minutes and paint over with a chaulk paint or other similar paint and it will crackle out.

I assembled one of these with legs upside down by accident and it's more comfortable. Great video by the way. Simple, no superfluous information. I think you need a bit of experience to follow it, but most people have a bit of experience before they decide to make a chair. Every other chair build on TH-cam seems excessively complicated.

Man!!! doing that much of accurate cutting almost by hand, i mean without a table saw or a work bench... i'm impressed! do you thing the pocket holes could hold a person after hours and hours of sitting?? i've always been afraid of making chairs without tenons.
Thank you! I plan on building a nice shop with some nice work benches very soon, but this video just goes to show that anyone can create some nice furniture with a little bit of patience. And the chairs are still holding strong. They haven’t shown any sign of loosening up in almost a year.
Hey DIY MAN, Awesome videos, I am working on the table now and almost finished. I am starting the chairs on Saturday. I noticed after reviewing the material and cut list to make sure I have everything that there is not anything about cutting the 2x4's to any size or that you ripped some of them in half. Also quick question, I didn't get an oil based white paint, is that okay or should I return it and get an oil based paint?

i love these chairs and definitely want to make them. My boyfriend is 6'6 so i wanted to ask if I wanted to make the chairs a bit taller, what length for the legs would you recommend?
Thanks! I think he’d be ok in the chairs as is, but if you wanted, you could add an inch or two. I wouldn’t do more than that
From the video I'm not too confident in the strength of the chairs with the butt joints and the pocket holes. How are they holding up till now? Would be very interesting to know!
I haven’t had any issues and we use them all the time. The only joints I would be concerned about at all are the braces near the floor. I don’t let the kids stand on the braces even though I have seen them do it, an it hasn’t seemed to hurt anything.

My rule is to add 18” to who the seat heights is. That’s always worked for me

What exactly are you doing to the seats with the angle down, I’m confused?
I try to explain it better in the description, but the easiest way is to just cut your 1x10s straight at 17.5”. I made another chair like that and it honestly looks better
Would you happen to know how to modify this to do a cross back?
I have never done that, but I’ve considered making some that way, I would recommend installing the upper and lower portion of the seat back then marking out one angled piece on the back then attach it with a nail gun. I would individually cut out the two last pieces to look like one solid piece and glue and nail those in as well. Like I said, I’ve never done it, but that is how I would imagine doing it

Hey! loved the video, approximately how long did it take you to carry out each section of the build? cutting time? assembly? painting? Just curious!
Thank you! I built the first chair in about 2 hours to make sure the design would work correctly. Then it took me about 5 more hours over the course of 2 more days to build the last 5 chairs. The staining, painting, and polyurethane took me three days because I had to wait between coats before applying the next coat. I think it took about an hour to do each coat. Your looking at about 10-12 hours of work.

Do you angle the front legs or just go level? Do you tilt the seat to the back a little?
The front legs are just cut straight. The seat is not tilted at all. However, as you probably noticed, the seat back is cut at an angle

What are the finished dimensions of the chair seats? It can't be 20" at the widest since you cut 6 pieces out of 120" (the total length of the 2x10) which doesn't take the blade width into account.
So I can’t remember the specifics, but when you cut the angled part of the seat with your miter saw, you should be able to flip over the board and cut the other side and direction. This should make up the difference for you. It’ll save you a few dollars to do that.
When you said angle down what does that mean would that make the boards uneven please help.
I recommend cutting these straight across at 18”. It’s much easier and it looks just as good if not better
How many hours total did it take you to complete the chairs?
It’s been so long since I’ve done them but I think with the finishing, you’re looking about 15-20 hours total

It’s all pine. A lot of it is dimensional lumber

Yes. You’ll need 12 16.5” 2x4s that have been ripped down to 2” wide for the front legs. Thanks! I would eventually like to make a new version of this video that is a little easier to follow.

What is black stain and white paint?
Dark walnut from Minwax and it’s an oil based white paint from Rustoleum. I can’t remember the exact color
I am in the process of building these chairs I am at the point to where I have cut the seats the 2x10 at 20 inches and 18 3/4 for the others then made the other cuts from 20 inches down to 18 3/4 on six of them the other six at 18 3/4 down to 17 1/2 when you line these boards up you have one side at an angle and the other side is straight so what have I done wrong? Please help I don’t understand why you would only cut one end of the seat boards and not the other.
I really recommend cutting these boards straight at 17.5 or 18” to make it as easy as possible. It looks just as good. However, if you want to cut the angles, I’ll try to make it a little easier to understand. First, cut 6 @ 20”

Just went to lowes and got all of the materials, added up to over $185... Where did you get your materials?
Lowe’s I believe. Lumber prices are almost double right now because of Covid. That is likely the cause.
How long did this take you?
I built the first chair in about 2 hours to make sure the design would work correctly, then I built the other 5 in about 5 more hours over the course of 2 days. The staining, painting, and polyurethane took 3 more days because I had to wait for it to dry between the coats. About 9-10 hours worth of work over the course of 5 days.

@DIYMan this video is great! I’m planning to make these as a housewarming gift for my wife. The trouble is, our counter top is at 36”. I’m trying to sort out how to adjust dimensions for the rear legs/uprights to bring the seat up, just a touch ~3”. Do you have any ideas how that night change the inner leg cut or even the overall length of those uprights? Thanks for the great content man! I’m watching all your stuff.
Thanks! That’s awesome! I recommend a 24” seat height for a 36” counter top. Ive got another chair video coming out in about a week that is going to be a considerably easier design. You’ll see when the video comes out, but you can simply add the extra length you need to the bottom portion of the chair legs, and everything else could be done exactly the same.

I don’t have plans for the dining room chairs, but I do have an instructable for a high chair that is identical except the front and back legs. The front legs on the dining chairs should be 16.5” and the back legs will follow the pictures in the video. When I go to make the 4 degree cuts on the seat pieces, 20 - 18.75 doesn't line up. Am I missing something?
Seems like the cuts should be 8 degrees. Let me know
I may have made a mistake. I’ll try to look at those measurements a little more closely. In the meantime, I recommend cutting the seat tops straight at 17.5”. I made them this way on some other chairs and the seats look just as good. Where did you get lumber that cheap? I've calculated and it would cost me around 250€ in Slovenia (Europe) for edge glued panels. That's approximately 290$.
Dimensional lumber is very cheap in the U. S. Or I should say it was. It has almost doubled since Covid-19. I could still build 6 of them here for around $150-200. But I bought all the lumber for this project at Lowe’s.
@@DIYMAN I understand the price difference now. As far as I understand, dimensional lumber is used for house framing. In Slovenia, almost everybody builds with porotherm clay bricks and as far as I know, dominant construction material in USA is lumber. Hence the lower lumber price in USA. I think I will buy lumber directly from a farmer (dryed) and have it run through a planer. I'll have to make some extra cuts, but it will be much cheaper that way. We have a food bank that I'm an active volunteer at and there requesting furniture. Your table and chair would be the perfect project since they are low cost to make. Probably only put one coat of stain on it, however.

@@DIYMAN I just joined your FB group. I designed the chair last night in Sketchup. Didn't really like the design I made so I will redesign it today. The wood cost to make a single chair is around $5.00 by using one 2X6 that is 8 feet long, which is Whitewood. Southern Yellow Pine would cost $6.00 a board.

Hard to say with todays prices
I am gonna do this, I need dinner table and chairs, I am glad found this how to DIY, I think I can do this projects, but I will go to house developer where they build a houses, they always dump good woods and I will cut and collect whatever they dump some good woods, I will save my money from buy new woods... I am earth saver....
I’m sure you could do it with used materials. I use pre-used material all the time.
I can't imagine how tiring it is working on your knees, there is nothing like a good work bench makes a huge difference.

How are these chairs holding up?
They’re still in use. I haven’t noticed any issues
Are they comfortable
They’re not too bad. There are obviously softer chairs with pads and all that but they sit up at the right angle and they are not too hard on the back.

If you are wanting to build these exactly like the video and as cheap as possible, you want to use pine. Otherwise, oak might be a nice option.

Great video except cutting with the grain with a miter saw. That’s rather dangerous and there’s a better tool for it. Either a circular saw or table saw.

Thank you! No, there is no degree cut at the back of the chairs. Just measurements and lines from those measurements. I have a closer pic of the leg design on our Affordable Backyard Woodworking page if you need it.

I don’t have plans for the dining room chairs, but I do have an instructable for a high chair that is identical except the front and back legs. The front legs on the dining chairs should be 16.5” and the back legs will follow the pictures below.
