    I too used to wear flip flops in the garage. It took me a while to learn that my toes were a lot softer than the things in my garage. I got a pair of Birkenstock Boston clogs best decision I have made for my toes safety.

      Hi Nicholas, I share my progress on tube channel Gopher Woodshop ive only done a couple of pretty basic videos, i’m currently finishing up on a shoulder plane video which is much better, but still needs some tweaking I’m sure you know how time consuming videoing is lol?
      When I get done with that, I’ll send you a link. I plan on doing the white oak table, from some air dried lumber from a tree I chain sawed up years ago. But only have so much time, as my real job gets in the way.

    I'm refinishing my red oak table right now. It's all sanded down and I just don't know if i want to stain it or do a natural finish. Did you use polyurethane last over the stain?

    • @nwkwok
      @nwkwok  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - I used Arm-R-Seal oil based wipe on poly (3 coats lightly sanding in between) over min-wax oil based stain. I personally love more natural looking tones. If you do stain, what stain are you thinking about going with? :)

    I want to make a coffee table. I was thinking about buying red oak 4ft×2ft plywood style and just adding legs to it. Do you think it would work or should I do multiple peices of wood to form the top as you had done?

    • @nwkwok
      @nwkwok  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds fun! I think it depends on the thickness of the plywood and what type of use you think the coffee table will get. This table was 1.5” thick which you definitely don’t need for a coffee table. 3/4” redwood plywood should be plenty strong for a normal use coffee table!

    • @whoisjen4431
      @whoisjen4431 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah ! I was thinking 3/4" red oak plywood. The coffee table is just to hold the occasional plate and cup of water while resting in the couch, nothing too heavy

    • @nwkwok
      @nwkwok  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whoisjen4431 awesome! Good luck with the build! Do you think you’ll hide the plywood edges with edge banding or trim? Or leave it exposed?

    Looks great. Did you consider using any wood grain filler? Have a project with oak coming up and debating it

    • @nwkwok
      @nwkwok  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah my two options were either mixing red oak saw dust from sanding at 220 grit + epoxy as wood filler or using black epoxy. Since the table was gonna be stained gray, I went with the black epoxy thinking it could be a cool complementing tone :) I wouldn’t use random wood filler though since it’d be hard to match the tone of the red oak

    I am really surprised by how much the calls straightened out the boards. Have you ever considered using biscuits for alignment?

    • @nwkwok
      @nwkwok  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t really considered it strongly. The biscuit joiner I currently have is $15 I got off FB marketplace that I use for fasteners (like I did for this table in mounting it to the legs).
      I think I had it in my head that Festool was the best way to do biscuits so I dismissed the idea cause of the price. What has your experience been with biscuits?

    • @arnoldc1724
      @arnoldc1724 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nwkwok I'm debating between purchasing biscuits or using cauls. Right now my edge glue ups are super raw, no cauls, no biscuits, not even pipe clamps on both sides LOL. Hoping my next panel will be better.

    • @nwkwok
      @nwkwok  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@arnoldc1724 Ah yeah... that would be difficult haha. Curious, without clamps, how are ensuring the faces that you're gluing up are getting good contact?
      I think the other reasoning for me not using biscuits is cause I was being resourceful with what I had. I had the spare lumber and the clamps to make those pretty easily. I've also done some glue ups without using calls and the sweat equity that goes into making something level was just too painful.

    • @arnoldc1724
      @arnoldc1724 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nwkwok I had pipe clamps just not on the top and bottom of the panel. And truth be told I don't have issues with cupping because I dont really press the clamps that tight. I will say I'm very careful during the jointing stage and I get my edges very flat. I also use the "in-out" method of edge joining lumber.

    • @nwkwok
      @nwkwok  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Kent!
      The total lumber cost was around $320:
      $300 for the 8/4 Red Oak
      $20 for the 4x4x8s for the legs
      I also had some spare 2x4s that I used for the stretchers.
      However, if there were more 6-7 ft pieces of red oak at the lumber store, I might've been able to get it down to $270 but they were all really long pieces at my lumber store.

    • @1bottlefed

      Note to anyone trying to create a similar table....though not nearly as bad as framing timber, hardwoods have also greatly increased in cost since Covid.

    • @nwkwok
      @nwkwok  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re meaning a table like this that is full solid wood I would venture a guess around $2k. You’ll find lots of tables that are 3/4” - 1” thick but they’ll frame the edges to look like it’s 1.5” - 2” thick and those will be closer to $750-$1200
