Making a Square Alder Dining Table With Intersecting "X" Base.

  • This is a 60 inch square dining table made from solid Alder.
    The base is made from two X shapes, one of which has a section removed so that the second one can pass through it.
    The tablesaw sled that I make in this video is to cut the 84.4 degree angle for the half laps in the X legs.
    This is not a very convienient angle but when I designed this table I knew that I wanted the footprint of the base to be 35 inches square. I also needed the final tabletop height to be 30 inches.
    With these to figures fixed, the angle came out to 84.4 degrees.
    I generally dont like to stain wood but my customer wanted a deep brown color so this wood was stained with Minwax "Espresso" stain.
    As always, Thanks for watching.

    Beautiful table. No issues with the two edge boards under the table for enhanced thickness being glued across the grain? The boards glued parallel I would expect to move with the top boards but those going across the grain, no warping or cracking?

    • @LastLegWoodworks
      @LastLegWoodworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! I appreciate that. There is actually not any cross-grain glue up on this table. Take a look at 13:36 and you'll see where I glue up the off cuts side by side in the same order as they are on the tabletop. Then when I glue that on at 15:33 the boards line up with their matching board in the top and all the grain runs the same way. This way they can move together. Thanks again for watching!

    Love the design! How did you calculate the length and angle of the legs to achieve the desired height?

    • @LastLegWoodworks
      @LastLegWoodworks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I modeled the table in Sketch-up. Once I knew the footprint that I wanted, and the table height, then I had the angle.

    I really like your design of the table legs. My son has requested I make a table for him but he wants it round and a six foot diameter. How stable is the table with that style base?

    • @LastLegWoodworks
      @LastLegWoodworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for checking out the video. This table is very stable. I followed the 2/3 rule for a pedestal base. So if your tabke will be 72 inches, the pedestal footprint should be roughly 48 inches. I’m not sure how hard and fast that rule is but it has worked well for me. Thanks again.

    • @dancarroll4616

    I really like the time and effort you put into that table. The finish is flawless. Amazing work. 5 coats is what I always do when I use Danish oil. What finish did you use please?

    • @LastLegWoodworks
      @LastLegWoodworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much, Tony. I really appreciate that. I used a satin Arm-R Seal from General Finishes. I'd like to try Danish oil sometime. Is it hard to apply?

    • @tonywharton5220
      @tonywharton5220 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LastLegWoodworks No it's pretty easy. One thick coat with a rag then leave for only 5 minutes before wiping off the excess. Then another thin coat after fine sanding every 24 hours. It takes time but the results are amazing and very long lasting. Another advantage of Danish oil is that it's food safe and no need for any stain before. Even on pretty rough pine I get a lovely finish. My whole kitchen is finished with Danish oil. It's not very expensive in the UK and goes a long way with a good shelf life. Maybe it will be worth you experimenting on off cuts. Also because it's an oil it's very weather and UV resistant. Hope that helps. Would love to see one of your projects using it. Just remember the first coat nice and thick and even. Leave no more than 5 or so minutes before wiping off excess, otherwise it becomes very sticky. 😀
