I wish people would stop reviewing Brysons XL grips and instead just reviews the grips in general so the masses don't go out and get the wrong size grip then say they don't benefit them at all. Use the sizing chart on the website but before you orer a set maybe order 1 or two different texture grip or sizes to find the one that you benefit the most from. The biggest misconception with their grips is it will affect the release of the club which is old school thinking. What actually happens is that you don't need a death grip to hang onto the club which results in lighter grip pressure which in turn helps with release and added clubhead speed. You definitely didn't do any justice for the grips. There is absolutely no reason to give a review for a grip that clearly doesn't fit you. If you used the jumbo grips from any other mfg you'd basically experience the same results. Not a fair review whatsoever but at least you clarified at the end though.
The xs JumboMax seems to be working just fine for Retief Goosen and your buddy Peter Finch seems to love his JumboMax as well.

I'm 6'4" and have very long fingers. These grips have helped me tremendously!
I have them on all of my clubs (except my putter). I also don't interlock my pinky and index finger so switching to these grips was a little easier for me than most people. I find it much easier to shot shape with these grips also.
Thanks for the upload Mr. Fryer, can't wait to see another video with your Dad. His tips have helped a lot, cheers!

A better example might have been the ultralite jumbomax grips which Bryson and myself use. The grip weight is much closer to a normal grip weight which would help with your feel of the head. I think Bryson does have larger hands and I have longer fingers myself so it works well enough. The main thing for me has been hand pain after playing is almost gone with the bigger grips.

Should be using the XLlite, they weigh about 55gms like a traditional grip, I have some arthritis and couldn't play the game without these grips, got down to a 5 hc, love them, almost everyone who picks up my clubs say "wow this actually feels pretty good"!

  • @banditbaker1675
    @banditbaker1675 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I moved to Jumbomax XL Ultralite Grips (size medium) in all my Clubs last year. (My arthritis had got so bad that I couldn't hold a club with a "normal" sized grip and was seriously considering giving up the game).
The results have been AMAZING, I can now play golf pain-free! I have also gained clubhead speed, and hit the ball higher, further and with much better dispersion.
It does take some experimentation to get used to the larger grips, like Bryson I now have the shaft much more in the palm with my upper hand (left hand in my case), not in the fingers. After hitting a couple of baskets of balls I also found that I was opening the clubface much less in the backswing so that the clubface was square at impact without having to close the face in the downswing. Now I don't have to worry about "squaring" the clubface at impact, the face just automatically stays square throughout the whole swing. So now I "just have to Grip it and Rip It"! Simple.

I think I saw somewhere, maybe even on Finch’s channel, that the preferred method of gripping the JumboMax is thru the palm and not “conventionally” in the fingers. I think with Bryson that grip and thru the palm allows him to play the One Length irons better.

I come from a baseball background so when I first started golfing it felt like I was holding tooth picks… I got the jumbo grip (small) because that’s what their chart fitted me for. It has made my golf game improve because of the comfortable feeling I have in my hands now. I don’t think a thick or thin grip will change if you slice or hook but more of how comfortable you are to the golf club. Don’t knock it til you try it!

I would have liked you to have had someone who takes an XL glove to compare their data. Lots of comments from golfers here who, like myself, have larger hands and feel they benefit from the bigger grips. Would have given the evidence to support or detract from what they say. I use midsize but often wonder about refitting with jumbo size so that extra data would have been good as I fear I may move the club too much into the palm of the hand if I change.

Very interesting segment, Matt. I play standard grips with 2 layers of tape. The grip is such a personal thing that most players should have themselves personally fitted. Having the right size for my game has worked wonders with club head speed and control. Another segment that would be interesting is the effect of driver loft on ball speed. I play my Tsi 3 at 7.25 which produces the highest ball speed for my swing speed (120-125mph) with driver. 👍🙏🙌🙌☝️☝️💪

I’m 6’2” w/fairly large hands, & can struggle w/flipping my hands/wrists through contact at times, but typically it only happens w/D. non-taper jumbo lite in XS. I Have it on my driver, LW, and now trying on my 8i. So far I really like them. Takes a little time getting used to, but I feel like I have more control over the club head. A bonus is with driver you feel like a dang 8’ tall Viking welding a monster sword. But they’re not for everyone as some hate the feeling. another issue can be taken more effort to release the club.

Like others have said. I have some issues with hand pain and a bit of arthritis and the larger jumbomax ultralites work well with my longer clubs. My hands would ache after 18 holes but now I can play with no real pain issues. I put them on my irons with mixed results and may switch back to medium sized grips for those clubs. One thing is that they do take some getting used to and there are several sizes, although all the jumbomax grips are bigger than a standard grip. But they aren't for everyone for sure.

Great Video Matt. Something I'd like to see is a "4 wood" video. Lots of Manufacturers (including Mizuno) don't have a "4 wood" anymore, so if you want a "4 wood" you can get a 3 wood and add loft, or a 5 wood a remove loft. What would the difference be between these situations? Similarly if you wanted say a 55degree wedge. You could go 54 bent weak to 55 or 56 bent strong to 55, what would the difference be between the two? These kind of videos are always interesting to me!

I switched to jumbo max ultra light large this year. The ultra light is 8 grams lighter than my golf pride grip it replaced.
I fitted them to all my clubs. I was concerned that it may affect my short game around the green but I needn’t have been concerned.
One area that has noticeably improved is the accuracy of my long irons into the green.
For me they feel so good to grip and without doubt my grip pressure has reduced taking tension out the forearms.
It took me a few weeks to get used to the look and I had to change my carry bag to get them all in.

For this to be a good review with the grip you would have to set up and swing more like Bryson on a single plan. He has talked about it before he grips more in his palm not fingers and with his swing his lead arm does not change at all from impact it’s straight all the way through. So he doesn’t really try to rotate the face at all. He also grips it pretty hard. Single plane setup automatically puts the grip more in the palm too.

I started to us oversized grips due to a little arthritis in my fingers which works very well but more importantly I discovered that if I use no body turn and keep my hands and wrists very quiet (think iron byron) I consistently hit every fairway at around 250 yards which I will take every time thank you. At my age I'm not looking to become a tour player, I just want to put in a decent round.

Very interesting Matt. I was having some bad hand pain a few years ago and switched to midsize and jumbo Golfpride grips. Not as large as the Bryson grips, but noticeably larger. After some trial and error, I settled on Jumbo grips for the 7 iron- Wedges, and Midsize for 5-6 irons and driver. Jumbo's for the hybrid and Fairway. Hand pain went away, shots are fairly straight and controllable.I wish the grip size would eliminate the chilli dips, duffed shots and stupidity from my game but so far no good. Thanks.

The science and physics for larger grips is incontrovertible. But as with all, personal preference rules supreme. I use Jumbo sized soft rubber wrap grips by Grip Pride. They feel amazing for me. Dispersion is down and pain is down and power is up. Took 3K drives at the range to get it. But I got it.

I use the standard grip, then wrap a layer of "tennis racket" foam. It gives a slightly larger grip for my long fingers, and they are extremely sweat and wet resistant, excellent feel and no slip. And it doesn't hurt that they cost $20 for a pack of 12 and in two years I've replaced only the one on my driver. Takes about five minutes to wrap them up the existing grip.

I've just moved from standard to midsize with 4 layers of tape. Although my hands aren't huge, I have longer fingers and some nerve damage/weakness. It's much more comfortable and my fingers still touch my left thumb at address, so it's not as inhibiting as a full Jumbo. Two rounds so far and I'm feeling not so concerned about the hands flipping over and a big snap hook. Thins are also less painful. Definitely personal preference though.

Nice Matt. I think a midsize would have been a happy medium (excuse the PUN). I have ML glove and use a midsize grip with 4 wraps which makes the grip a bit more spongy and I use less grip pressure. I have never hit the ball further (I have made some swing changes as well). I think using less grip pressure is a bonus, but still allows me to work the ball but not drastically.

I use the mid size Dri-TAC foam grips and love them, great control, saved my long iron game, 200 yards with a 5 iron , away more accurate than a graphite.
Be -careful! jumbo grips weigh a lot and really play havoc swing weights pulling a D4 back to a C6-C8 ,
may mean little to some but could be 20 yards less with long irons and fairway woods.

I get why Matt used the larger JumboMax grip for the test but it's not really a fair reflection on the product as a whole. I've been using a JumboMax medium on my driver and a wedge now for about 6 months as an experiment and agree that at first, with the driver especially, it exacerbated my miss to the right. However, my wedge game improved dramatically (I have the STR8 grips, so you can grip down the shaft and it's the same thickness, top, middle or bottom). I improved with the driver when I had the light bulb moment of grip pressure though, as you can grip the club with much less pressure with these grips than you would with a standard / thinner grip. All-in-all I'd say, as Matt does, it's horses for courses and it depends on hand size, grip pressure and shot shape. That said, I can now draw or fade the driver at will, it just takes time to work with them mentally IMO. Currently planning on putting the STR8 Mediums on all my wedges and the next size down for my irons in the next few months.

  • @mmahybrid

I use the medium JumboMax grips on all my clubs except putter.
They have benefit me greatly because my hands are big. I wear XXL gloves so a regular grip makes my hands cramp and overlap.
Also, being a stronger than average golfer (deadlift 225Kg) the added weight doesn't effect me so much.
My handicap lowered by roughly 8 strokes when I made the switch and my hands don't hurt after a round as well.

I use a large grip, I found it great. I am xl glove and on a standard size grip my fingers dig into my palm.
I used to get sore hands also and big grips helped that. As I get better I found that to be caused by flipping and no lag/hitting down. When you flip the opposing force is applied in between your 2 little fingers. You need to grip very firm because of the close distance between them. I now hit down with lag and get in front of the ball. This puts the pressure to the outer palm of both hands about 25cm apart instead of 3. More leverage means a lighter grip and no sore hands. I could probably play standard now but I still like the big grips and probably not good to have my fingers digging into my palm.

Howdy. While I think this is a very well made video and very comprehensive, this feels like the equivalent of 'what happens if I wear shoes my size, a size smaller, or if I wear clown shoes'. I started playing 'normal' oversize grips from Winn first and have now moved to HM extra smalls on all my clubs. One of the main reasons is I dont have to hold on to the club so tightly. I dont have huge hands either, but standard grips feel so hard to hold onto now.
I appreciate what you're trying to do with the video. I think if you had a fitting for the right size JM grip for you, you might see much better results than just going for the most extreme option.

I have watched plenty of Bryson and he flattens his front wrist and almost arm locks all clubs to try and remove variables of face to path and then Kyle Berkshire uses undersized and uses a lot of wrist but he doesn’t have worry about consistency.

If you use the grip size recommender on their website it would not have recommended the JumboMax XL grip for your glove size so going straight to the XL size is not a realistic test as you have demonstrated here. It would probably have recommended you get the JumboMax XS.

I just bought a used Mizuno ST200 driver that came with an oversized grip. I’ve been topping a ton of drives and weirdly hooking which I never did before. The grip feels very uncomfortable but didn’t think it could be affecting my shot. Time to re-grip I think.

My two cents and recommendation is to do a follow up video where you hit the Bryson Grip one hundred times and learn to hit it properly - learning to do so will for anyone who tries it, improve their delivery dramatically. Huge grips promote learning to getting the face of the club in proper position early at the top and not relying on your hands to save an open face at impact - which is not an optimal strategy to becoming a good golfer - and as you can see, your misses were all right - thus the open face.

    Video Needs Corrections by Matt:
That is NOT the grip Bryson uses. You are using the JumboMax Tour at 123 grams! Bryson uses the JMX Ultralite at 50 grams which is the weight of an average Standard grip.
Every plus 8 grams in the handle will lighted your swing weight by one point. The math is 123g (jumbo) - 50g (standard) = +73g divide by 8g means you lightened your swing weight by 9+ points. NO WONDER YOU COULDN'T HIT THAT.

I know it’s a test Bryson’s grip video, but out of interest, have you just tried midsize? I take Medium in most gloves, and just find midsize a more comfortable grip without sacrificing any feel. I’m not sure if Standard should be standard for the adult male’s hand size these days.

Everyone is a little different I guess. If you are using the very heavy pro version of jumbomax, they will make throw the swing weight way off, and Im not surprised they threw you off so much. I play jmax ul medium on all my clubs because my knuckles tend to get sore after playing, or hitting a lot of balls. I don't find they make any difference to my swing/release, and I can go back and forth between standard grips and these without issues.

That is the tour grip weighs 90 grams in the small. Bryson used the ultra lite jumbo max grips weigh 44 grams or so in small he uses xtra large which is ridiculously big. Put the tour grips on your 60 degree it is a counter balance grip

The larger the grip the more you move from small fast twitch muscles to larger muscle groups. A decrease in club speed and slower hands will result in a slice. Opposite is true for smaller grips for a slicer. They may be able to speed the release of your hands since the fast twitch muscles are fully engaged.

You just said it: it's the only thing we touch on the club. I find it fairly important because it's like tires on a car: it's the only part that touches the road.
The wrong tires will give you a bad experience. Same with a grip in that you should experiment and find the grip that helps you deliver the club best for you.

I was thinking about getting larger grips because I have really big hands. But then I read that they have the tendency to add more of a slice, which I have no problem doing on my own, so I stopped looking into them.

I just put the Jumbo max ultralight XL Non tapered.. and it was not what I was expecting lol blocking them all off to the right disappointed and wish there was a way this company could recommend which ones to get I was told to get the XL doing the websites fitting guide. Nonetheless a waste of $200 should have probably went with the standard sized jumbomax

People who have wristy and flippy swings have this problem. The grips some what expose people that have to flip to square the face at impact. With them being bigger, its not as easy to flip as it was with normal/midsize grips.
Try maybe making your grip stronger or work on reducing the flip. Or this is not good advice but try and feel like your closing/flipping earlier.

I think I watched a bryson video showing how he adjusts his grip to those jumbo grips

  • @floggerrush5
    @floggerrush5 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You missed the obvious fact that changing those grips wildly changed your swing weights for the club. Going to the jumbomax from a undersized would add like 40g of weight at the grip. That could change you from a D2 to a C2 or more. This is why when you are wondering a trial like this it is so important to do it with a true club fitter that can make those adjustments on the fly so you compare apples to apples.

    • @atreyuwings
      @atreyuwings 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Loft is the club head angle it would hit the ball at when the shaft is vertical. Common loft is like 46-47° for a pitching wedge. Lie is the angle the club head is parallel to the ground at address. Length can effect the lie so if you want to play longer or shorter irons you may need to have your lie angle adjusted to be parallel when the club is closer or further away from you to compensate for this. And then length is the club length. You got this.

i feel like your missing an important piece of data here. what size glove do you wear? you say you have smaller hands but no actual mention of how small. I recently switched to a midsize +4 grip from standard because the club would fall out of my fingers into my palm a lot due to having larger hands.
