I say the following as a retired professional violist, teacher, cathedral choirmaster, organist and composer. What most people and musicians do not appreciate, especially most violists, is that the 6th here is and should be played, lightly; not digging into the strings like in romantic music. Rather, let the weight and rosin of the bow do all the work. In doing this, the violas speak clearly, cleanly and with ease. However, this is not easily done since the strings are thick and most violas do not speak and respond as easily or quickly as the violin or cello due to the viola not being a mathematically and acoustically correctly proportioned instrument. Since Bach loved playing the viola, he no doubt understood its limitations and beauty. Well done folks!!!
Well, I have to believe that the viola is as much mathematical and acoustic correct as all other instruments. Otherwise it had not survived in this long competition.
Yes, the 6th is hard to pull off because in the first movement all must play so as to highlight the overtones of their timbre without playing timidly - a difficult tightrope! One solution is to slow the first movement down so that the faintest "swing" is perceived. I don't think these performers hit the mark at all in the first movement. The choice of the harpsichordist in the second movement to use stops, regrettably, kills, the, legato, of it, all. At least the third movement is a complete success.
@@McDougleGuitarMan9 Not sure if you know, that performance was on the 250th anniversary of Bach passing, done in the Mirrors Hall of the castle were the original concerts were premiered. If you pay attention, they used original instruments from Bach's time, tuned to 432Hz. That version is probably the closest you will ever listen to the original.

The instrumentation with two violas, instead of violins, gives this a special feeling, and I just adore how this group of musicians, Orchestra Mozart, also can handle Bach.
No other musical instrument, bowed stringed or not, had many copies as the viola under designations: Alto in french, Bratsche in german, as well as, Viola Bowed, Viola “da Braccio” Viola Bastarda (Bariton) Viola d 'Amore (with sympathetic chords ) Viola “di Fagote” (with seven gut strings wrapped and sixteen more in steel that vibrate sympathetically) Viola "di Bordone”, Viola Marina (Violet) Viola “da Gamba”, Viola Tenor, Viola Contralto , Violone, Viola “Pentacorde” (five-stringed), Viola Descant, Viola “di Collo”, Viola “da Spalla”, and Viola Pomposa, in a succession of types and models, are names that were assigned to the instrument from its origin in the sixteenth century, as the heir stringed medieval Viola from Moorish origin. The first document on the instrument was quoted in the book "Regula Rubertina" authored by Ganassi del Fontego in 1543. In addition to this diversification language, justifying its popularity and importance at the time, was portrayed by Renaissance painters in the domes of the ceilings, in the altarpieces and frescoes in churches and cathedrals, ever in angelic conversation.
While all the Brandenburgs are special, #6 is my favorite. The unusual instrumentation (viola, viola da gamba especially) leads to a very rich sounding woven tapestry. And the 3rd movement is one the most joyous of the bunch. I especially like the harpsichordist on this version.
J..S. Bach - what can one say? Performed with this artistic, musical and technical perfection words become meaningless. Thank you for this truly stimulating and joyful performance.
The play of the cello guy is just marvellous. It is a wonder. Talk about difficulty! And it makes it, just fine. This piece is a killer for the soloist, Bach would have been proud of all of them.
No doubt the best live recording of the complete Brandenburg Concerto's I've ever listened to. So clear and perfect. It's a shame it took 14 years to reach TH-cam to the best of my knowledge.
Wow...Such a great performance, just beautiful! Imagine, all the hours of practise these musicians put in, to learn their instruments, then coming together in performing music written for a man (the Margrave of Brandenburg) who never bothered with it...They were never actually performed. The Margrave of Brandenburg stuffed them in a drawer and forget about them and they were not performed until they were rediscovered many years later. Thankfully we have amazingly talented people today who can keep this music alive and remind us of the great talent of Bach, the instruments and the people who play them. No 6 is my favourite, the first time I heard it, I felt it was so futuristic and dream like, it still does.
I used to hear from my friends that a boring Brandenburg concerto No. 6 isn't like number 5 or 4 or even 1. But when I found out about it, I completely changed my mind and loved it!
Dear Wolfgang, you dont mention the 3:rd? For me the third is perheps the best, together with this 6:th. We all have our favourites, even you Wolfgang. Lucky for us!
A lot of baroque composers experimented with different combinations of instruments but none of them had Bach's genius. Every one of his Brandenburg Concertos were for widely different combinations of instruments but keeping to the concerto format. This is a great performance of the last one, No 6.With two violas starring. Absolutely great.
loved that they didn’t try to rush this, like MOST versions of MOST of the Brandenburgs tend to be. So many groups play as if faster=better: Not the case!!! This was a very beautiful rendition: Thank you.
Wahrlich ausgezeichnetes Barockensemble!
I never tire of watching this video. The musicians seem to be enjoying the supreme pleasure of playing as one; when it's time to get lyrical they get lyrical, when it's time to groove to the catch-me-if-you-can syncopations of the ritornello they do just that. And it's Bach... Humankind at its best.
I specially love the second movement 06:00 where the two violas (Danusha Waskiewicz and Simone Jandl) are speaking to each other in an intimate tone, accompanied by Ottavio Dantone on beautiful harpsichord.
From to be the "odd" one of all Brandenburg Concertos in my early days this has became my favourite at this mature age, Concerto no 6. Of course I love the two ladies wonderful playing on their violas. For me this is a perfect interpretation!

One of the weirdest pieces of music that everyone knows, a concerto grosso whose ensemble (a septet) is hardly "grosso" and is noteworthy for having no violins..It's one of the finest showcases for the viola, though. Nothing else is like it.
My favorite interpretation of the 6th. Fastest one, too. But that is the call of our time to have classical music performed much faster than when Bach composed the Brandenburg concertos. Excellent performance. Bravissimo.
We still dont know how fast or slow this music was played in Bach´s times! Only that it after the romantic period of music, when Mendelsson lifted it up to again be known by the listeners, it had a very long in time tendency to be played very slow. I myself prefer this faster version. I like the swing in Bach. What is right or wrong doesn´t matter, as we dont know, I believe it is a question of what you like.
Beautiful. So, so beautiful! The violists, everyone plays exquisitely. We all have our favourites, but ever since I first heard this, it’s mine. The ringing, chiming quality, the sheer musicality have earned my ear and my heart. The second movement has been transformed from a rather dark element to one which is reflective and sweet. Thank you. With love from Canada
Great performance. It looks like one of the violists is more Baroque than the other - I mean in the Baroque bowing and absence of shoulder rest. Beautiful playing.
A performance is always better if the artists involved are clearly enjoying the experience as much as the audience, and those two young ladies were obviously making the most of the viola getting the highlights. Brilliant performance. And listening to it again, I have to say that the counterpoint of the 2nd movement is absolutely superb!
I get such joy watching the musicians play this beautiful Bach music. And for the most part the joy and compotence fidolayedy by several of them makes my heart glad. I guess that I relate to their obvious joy in their efforts. About 5 years ago I started again playing the tuba after being away from music for perhaps 50 years. Such pleasure for me playing in two area concert bands!
If someone who is unfamiliar with classical music but curious wanted an introduction, I would play the Brandenburg No. 3 (or maybe any of Vivaldi's Four Seasons). Exquisite.
Apropos to nothing, the second violist was a ringer for Claudio Abado’s version of Pelleas and Mesalinde by the Mahler Youth Orchestra, which is also an excellent performance, if you’re into that.

I have written out this work in C major rather than its usual Bb. I wanted to see if the fingering and response of the viola would be better in C. I was very surprised to find out IT WAS! This piece is much easier to play in a fingered C major and even responds better.
I would add, since there are two types of viola - the alto viola and the tenor viola - I would love to hear a side by side comparable performance with the same players but with the two different kinds of violas. I suspect the solo tenor violas would produces a better version / sound over the solo alto violas.
