That flute has a magnificent tone-more focused than a baroque flute but just as rich and warm.

Perhaps the most joyful, balanced, nuanced performance of this work I've ever heard. Watching the ensemble members react to each other, move with each other and completely delight in playing together, is a pure joy. Bravi.

I’m 13 and I’m currently entering my 8th grade year in August. Back in 2022, it was my 6th grade year and Bach’s music really helped my through middle school and this is the best version of the Brandenburg concertos ❤❤❤❤❤

JS Bach never claimed that the music he composed came from him - he said it came through him.
His awareness was of a much higher nature.

Do you have a citation for this? Bach always claimed that his music was soli deo Gloria - only for the glory of God - but I haven’t come across any statement by him that he was merely channeling God.

What I really like about this piece is how the Solo violin, the flute, and the harpsichord interact. They're the main characters, so to speak. I like how the violin and flute embellish eachother and sometimes call and respond. The harpsichord solo is also divind

All these Abbado Brandenburgs are quite magnficent. Superbly played, very well directed live video, but above all a superb sound recording, helped by the right acoustic. Many studio recordings fail to achieve this level of clarity and richness. The sound recording engineers we can't see deserve as much praise as the musicians we can see.

The first movement always gives me the impression that the musicians HAVE to stop playing their parts to listen the mesmerising harpsichord's part. Like when people are dancing in a club and a person ( or couple) are dancing so incredibly well that everybody stops to watch them and they create a circle around the stars of the show.

A very nice metaphor! It really is incredible solo, and one that makes me wish the harpsichord was capable of greater volume. I cheat and turn up the sound! It is an extraordinary sequence, getting more and more complex as it goes until it reaches the final triumphant bars. Friends of mine who like jazz are always blown away by it, and many soloists cannot resist swinging it --- and why not!

Einfach wunderbar!

I've heard so many performances of this music, and this is the best, primarily because of Abbado's choice of tempos. But he is not inflexible; subtle variations in tempo and dynamics give this performance exceptional expressive power. Simply a delight.

05:55 ... This is the first concerto cadenza in the history of music, therewith certifiying the birth of a new genre introduced by the great JSB: the clavier concerto ... Until then, the cembalo had remained in the orchestral background as an instrument merely providing the "Basso Continuo" with some chords ... After this stroke of genius, Bach wrote many more Clavier concertos, especially intended for performance in "Café Zimmermann" in Leipzig, mostly with only one harpsichord but adding one, two and even three harpsichords as his sons (under his tuition of course) became accomplished players as well ...

Gorgeous, so well performed, but I would appreciate a little better balance between the harpsichord and the rest of the ensemble.

Somestimes I wonder if Music didn´t peak with this piece. Well, at least, most of the time I consider this my favourite music piece...

Very lively tempo. Is this the speed it should be played? I think this is the fastest I've heard this played.

Para mí,dando millones de gracias a DW por este grandioso concierto y por todos los que nos ofrece,la mejor versión de estos conciertos de Brandenburgo es la de Karl Richter dirigiendo a la orquesta Munchener Bach.Gracias.

      Dear Mary Norton,
The harpsichord is a much older instrument than the fortepiano. On the harpsichord, the strings are plucked by keels, while on the fortepiano they are struck by hammers. Because of the plucking technique, it is not possible to create large volume differences on the harpsichord. On the fortepiano, on the other hand, an infinitely variable dynamic range is possible. Depending on how hard you strike the keys, the hammers on the strings produce louder or softer tones. The Italian Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655 - 1731) is considered the inventor of the fortepiano. His dynamically playable keyboard instruments were copied and further developed in other European countries.
We hope that we could help you with this answer.
Please, stay tuned to DW Classical Music!
