Thanks! I thought that ....later on in life I share his stardom with Mozart, Beethoven, now I think of Tchaikovsky-Rachmaninnof. but BACH is a colossal composer no question
Perhaps the most joyful, balanced, nuanced performance of this work I've ever heard. Watching the ensemble members react to each other, move with each other and completely delight in playing together, is a pure joy. Bravi.
I’m 13 and I’m currently entering my 8th grade year in August. Back in 2022, it was my 6th grade year and Bach’s music really helped my through middle school and this is the best version of the Brandenburg concertos ❤❤❤❤❤
Do you have a citation for this? Bach always claimed that his music was soli deo Gloria - only for the glory of God - but I haven’t come across any statement by him that he was merely channeling God.
What I really like about this piece is how the Solo violin, the flute, and the harpsichord interact. They're the main characters, so to speak. I like how the violin and flute embellish eachother and sometimes call and respond. The harpsichord solo is also divind
All these Abbado Brandenburgs are quite magnficent. Superbly played, very well directed live video, but above all a superb sound recording, helped by the right acoustic. Many studio recordings fail to achieve this level of clarity and richness. The sound recording engineers we can't see deserve as much praise as the musicians we can see.
The first movement always gives me the impression that the musicians HAVE to stop playing their parts to listen the mesmerising harpsichord's part. Like when people are dancing in a club and a person ( or couple) are dancing so incredibly well that everybody stops to watch them and they create a circle around the stars of the show.
A very nice metaphor! It really is incredible solo, and one that makes me wish the harpsichord was capable of greater volume. I cheat and turn up the sound! It is an extraordinary sequence, getting more and more complex as it goes until it reaches the final triumphant bars. Friends of mine who like jazz are always blown away by it, and many soloists cannot resist swinging it --- and why not!
what a rare gem of musical performance! that cadenza was so perfectly pronounced that I'm sure Bach's soul was floating around that hall listening with content... thx 4 sharing!
Sounds like.. make love not war...still so available friends, let's dedicate this EPIC performance those who need to become your supporters from now on, those who never imagined before they might need this heavenly delight
ohhhhh yes! from that first chord I was blown away. this is gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! The Brandenburg Concertos are the most beautiful music ever written in my opinion.
Marvelous and energetic, but with warmth! The three soloists are all associates of Maestro Abbado, perhaps playing to honor him as their mentor and encourager.
Einfach wunderbar!
I've heard so many performances of this music, and this is the best, primarily because of Abbado's choice of tempos. But he is not inflexible; subtle variations in tempo and dynamics give this performance exceptional expressive power. Simply a delight.
I came for the harpsichord solo, but stayed for the flute! All phenomenal performers. What a wonder it is that we can hear music this beautiful... composed hundreds of years ago and played by people who make it look as easy as breathing. ❤🔥
So much passion and tenderness in this performance. It is simply magnificent. The best version I have heard. Remarkable soloists and powerful ensemble playing.
I have to say that this is an excellent performance by everyone, I'm super impressed! I'm especially impressed with the harpsichord! That is the best I've ever heard it played before and I've heard so many recordings. Amazing.
Fantastic! My God, Bach would have loved this. He wrote so little music for this genre because nobody could play it accurately at the time. Now we can. Just listen!
I have the odious task of washing a boatload of dishes. The spirit of Bach’s magnificent music coupled with the superb performance of all the musicians lifts me above the mundane. A heartfelt thank you!
Danke für das Teilen eines tollen Videos! Die Raffinesse der Musik, der Musiker an den Instrumenten! Und präsentierte auch Kommentare in ukrainischer Übersetzung! Gott sei Dank!
this is complete madness: to place someone in front of this orchestra for an BC by Bach. Abbado waves to the musicians and that's it. Totaller wahnsinn!
Totally agree. It is one of those few times where the conductor is put in "poetic mode" ... or as a marketing strategy. A very strange thing that few people can understand.
NULLA SCIENTIA MELIOR MUSICA ANIMAE HARMONIA There is no greater knowledge than music for the harmony of the soul.
05:55 ... This is the first concerto cadenza in the history of music, therewith certifiying the birth of a new genre introduced by the great JSB: the clavier concerto ... Until then, the cembalo had remained in the orchestral background as an instrument merely providing the "Basso Continuo" with some chords ... After this stroke of genius, Bach wrote many more Clavier concertos, especially intended for performance in "Café Zimmermann" in Leipzig, mostly with only one harpsichord but adding one, two and even three harpsichords as his sons (under his tuition of course) became accomplished players as well ...
The first performance I have seen where the flute and violin overpower the harpsichord to an extreme degree. In other recordings, the harpsichord has been a equal player throughout.
I have to say, I’ve heard many recordings of these brandenburg concertos and I’m just realizing I listened to a couple of these recordings when I was younger! I didn’t make the connection until now. This is probably one of my top favorite recordings, plus the sound is so clear too!❤ Well done, and the harpsichord solo is second to none!
I have a number of recordings of this concerto. Incredible playing - on the fast side but not the fastest I have! The Karl Richter recording comes in at 15 minutes and boy does he play that harpsichord and that recording comes from 1965.
Gracias.
Dear Mary Norton, The harpsichord is a much older instrument than the fortepiano. On the harpsichord, the strings are plucked by keels, while on the fortepiano they are struck by hammers. Because of the plucking technique, it is not possible to create large volume differences on the harpsichord. On the fortepiano, on the other hand, an infinitely variable dynamic range is possible. Depending on how hard you strike the keys, the hammers on the strings produce louder or softer tones. The Italian Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655 - 1731) is considered the inventor of the fortepiano. His dynamically playable keyboard instruments were copied and further developed in other European countries. We hope that we could help you with this answer. Please, stay tuned to DW Classical Music!
That sparkling harpsichord entrance must surely be one of the most beautiful moments in keyboard history
Si a um céu o vemos a través de Bach
That flute has a magnificent tone-more focused than a baroque flute but just as rich and warm.
The Best keyboard solo ever!!!
Bach is the best that mankind has produced!
Thanks! I thought that ....later on in life I share his stardom with Mozart, Beethoven, now I think of Tchaikovsky-Rachmaninnof. but BACH is a colossal composer no question
So much Joy! esp. the Brandenburgs
VIVALDI
With W.A. and L.V. tight on his heels!
@SilvioNobre oh yes
Perhaps the most joyful, balanced, nuanced performance of this work I've ever heard. Watching the ensemble members react to each other, move with each other and completely delight in playing together, is a pure joy. Bravi.

Wow, the harpsichord solo part was phenomenal! Such a great performance!

Insane. Even the flautist was transported.
It is literally the birth of the modern keyboard concerto. As usual, all of music is in Bach.
it is regarded as the first cadenza in the music history
When flute and harpsichord play together it is a real jam
Session.😊😊😊
i love the emphasis on the flute, so often neglected in rendering this masterpiece. bravo
JS Bach never claimed that the music he composed came from him - he said it came through him.
His awareness was of a much higher nature.
....Thankyou for this statement information I had'nt read or encountered it before that I remember . It's an interesting and vital point of thought .
Do you have a citation for this? Bach always claimed that his music was soli deo Gloria - only for the glory of God - but I haven’t come across any statement by him that he was merely channeling God.
I read it somewhere in his Biography. I can check when I am home again. May take a while. Thanks

I don't know all musicians. But Carmignola (violin), Brunello (Cello) and Ottavio Dantone are exceptional musicians and soloists.
I would have given them a standing ovation. This was phenomenal!
❤

Also seem to thoroughly enjoy playing the music. I hate a dispassionate performance.
completely agree. I hear parts I have never heard before in other recordings

I like the bass line that starts at 2:46. Really nice cello sound :)
Indeed! This is one of the reasons I love basso continuo.
How pleasant to the spirit to listen to J. S. Bach, my favorite among my favorites. Greetings from Medellín. Colombia. 🇨🇴
Éxtasis...!!
👋🏻👋🏻😄
Meraviglia assoluta!!!!!!!
Thank you for your comment. If possible, please comment in English next time so that more people can follow the discussion. All the best!
This is the first time I listen to this harpsichord solo with such a pronounced and strategic pause as in 7:53. It sounds really good this way.
👍
I remember teaching myself this first allegro movement in fifth grade. I was ignited and inspired.
what a rare gem of musical performance! that cadenza was so perfectly pronounced that I'm sure Bach's soul was floating around that hall listening with content... thx 4 sharing!
We are glad you liked it!
Beautiful, magnificent performance!! The musicians are the best. They play such difficult music with apparent ease and grace.
What a wonderful interpretation. I was waiting for the harpsichord solo like a piece of delicious dessert. Extremely! Golden performance!
Bach is my favourite Barock Composer and those "Brandenburg- Concertos " And Claudio Abbado a very great Pianist/ Cembalist 🎶🎹🎶
Crystal clear articulation, phrasing and balance. A priceless diamond of a performance💎❤💎

Absolutely, phenomenal!

Bach invented the keyboard concerto, and this was his first.
Timeless perfection! Memory eternal to Abbado!
Claudio Abaddo Extraordinarie , J. S. Bach a Genie , MERCI BEACOUPE !
Let me add one more comment - so joyful the musicians, so happy - it shines in the way they play❤
Marvelous and energetic, but with warmth! The three soloists are all associates of Maestro Abbado, perhaps playing to honor him as their mentor and encourager.
Watching on tv now. Couldn’t have missed it. Sharing as well. No matter how often you have listened to this stunning concert you want to do it again.

Not only perfect, but stunning! There's an umbelivable cello!!!
Mathematics is the language of the universe.
Music is its poetry.
Well said.
You should have referenced Galileo & Wordsworth!
That deceptive cadence at 8:21!😋 Absolutely wonderful all around! I just discovered this amazing group. Thank you!

I love how you highlight the cello part starting at 3:10. It’s such a beautiful passage and the cello is often overlooked on this part. Thank you 😊
Yes ... divine. And lovely visual editing to highlight the cello as well.
cello: one of my favorite instruments
Agreed. One of the most delicate and touching passages of music ever composed. 🙏🏼
For me, really starts at 2:46.

Right!
He asked for the best seat in the house and got it :)
You're right, no need for a conductor, they practically ignored him.

the cembalo solo moves me to tears
But can the harpsicord player do the organ solo for Deep Purples Burn? :)
Beautiful instrument and superb playing.
That harpsichord looks absolutely marvelous. And here's my repeat button: 5:21
under the keyboard table:
"Nulla scientia melior musica animae harmonia"

Dantone.... Carmignola..... Abbado... Reunidos con Bach. Super.....!
Wonderful performance!
Me encanta Bach y siempre Bach.
Respect for Mtro. Cl. Abbado (1933-2014). Even his sole presence could have a positive impact to the concert.

Majestoso! Sublime!💝
Hermoso concierto
Crisply paced, beautiful performance. Loved it!
Such a beautiful and balanced interpretation 🙏✨
I think we can safely say that we've advanced beyond the Baroque bow. Let's put them all to rest.-The Violinistextraordiaire 🙂
Perhaps this is the first piano consert in history? Played on harpsichord and with a very small orchestra.
Bach & Abbado...divine music!🌌✨
I have a number of recordings of this concerto. Incredible playing - on the fast side but not the fastest I have! The Karl Richter recording comes in at 15 minutes and boy does he play that harpsichord and that recording comes from 1965.
Outstanding piece of bach, unique in performance...
Gorgeous, so well performed, but I would appreciate a little better balance between the harpsichord and the rest of the ensemble.
Sublime on every level. Humanity at its best
Somestimes I wonder if Music didn´t peak with this piece. Well, at least, most of the time I consider this my favourite music piece...
Very lively tempo. Is this the speed it should be played? I think this is the fastest I've heard this played.
I totally agree with you I respect master Abbado if He does he knows why he probably studied that is how it was played following Bach tempo
Gracias.

MARAVILHOSA obra de BACH!!!
His tempi are insane!
This is beauty in music this makes me happier. It,seems,to have literal emotion..
could some tell me as i once knew what is difference between a panio forte and a Harpsicord?
Dear Mary Norton,
The harpsichord is a much older instrument than the fortepiano. On the harpsichord, the strings are plucked by keels, while on the fortepiano they are struck by hammers.
