The Brandenburg Concertos (BWV 1046-1051) by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) are a collection of six instrumental works dedicated by Bach to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721. They are regarded as some of the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque era. But the concerts were probably composed between 1718 and 1721 for Bach’s Köthener Hofkappelle. Bach’s original title “Six Concerts with Various Instruments” describes exactly what is special about these concerts: the varied use of several instruments, i.e. different strings, wind instruments, or solo harpsichord for the concertino.

The Orchestra Mozart was founded in 2004 to give talented young musicians the opportunity to play in a world-class orchestra with a world-class conductor. Claudio Abbado (1933-2014) is considered one of the greatest conductors of all time. In 2011, music magazine Classic Voice named Abbado the most important of the top 100 living conductors. He was born into a family of musicians in Milan, Italy, on June 26, 1933. After studying conducting, piano and composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, he continued at the Vienna Music Academy. In 1968 Abbado became chief conductor at the Milan Scala. In the subsequent years, he was to be seen on the world’s great concert stages, in Milan, London and Chicago. After giving his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1984, he was named the city’s general music director. In October 1989, the members of the Berlin Philharmonic elected him artistic director, succeeding Herbert von Karajan. He remained in Berlin until 2002. Abbado died in Bologna on January 20, 2014, aged 80 after a long battle with cancer.

The horn trill at 10:04 is unbelievable. The trio with oboes and bassoon is perfection, and the polonaise is almost Handel. I think this is Bach uncharacteristically holding back a little, and is really amazing.
I agree with the menuet and the polonaise.

So lovely, calming and uplifting to the soul. I recall how so many years ago I brought home the old DG Archiv recordings with their dull grey covers. The movement for recreating original sounding versions of these classics was in its formative years. I felt like I was unwrapping something antique. But when I see these incredible musicians playing with such joy and grace, I understand that this was the experience they wanted to recreate. Thank you so much, especially Maestro Abbado, whose visionary heart for this music has made it such a gift for us all.

This ranks in the top 2 or 3 recorded performances of Bach BrBg Conc #1 in existence. I was filled with the Holy Spirit with power while listening to the Paillard Chamber Orchestra under Jean-Francois Paillard so I have to rank that as the top. 🙂🙏🙌

A mí me hizo un poco de gracia la cuestión del reclame en el medio del concierto ya que había ido a atender asuntos domésticos y lejos de pantalla ni cuenta me dí de cambio hasta que me avisó el oído.Este es Mozart ? me pregunté en mi ignorancia ya que mismo ignorante soy.

La gracia está en que me sentí contenta pues algo de oído en cuestión de música clásica he ido adquiriendo.

I cannot understand why a conductor for this kind of orchestra. Marketing?
It is debatable and the debate has been going on for decades.... Should we perform that music with or without conductor? This applies not only to baroque music but to anything from the early music repertoire to the greater part of the orchestra repertoire... In this case, I think Brandenburg concertos 1,2 and 4 benefit from having a conductor. 3,5 and 6 can be done without. It all depends on the caliber of the musicians, the size of the orchestra and other factors such as knowledge, understanding and interpretation of Baroque music. If no conductor is present, one of the players will have to conduct while playing (usually the 1st violin or 1st viola (as is the case with the No 6). We need to remember that we judge and analyze baroque performances with our 21st century knowledge of Baroque music, music which we did not have in the early part of the 20th century. For the greater part of the 19th century, Baroque music was not performed as much as it is today. There was a renaissance of it around the end of the 19th century. Unfortunately, the scholarly research then was not what it is now and performances of baroque music were done with large orchestras with a romantic interpretation and understanding of that music. With new research and discoveries during the second half of the 20th century, we have come to understand better how the music was performed at the time, the nature and size of the instruments etc. When the Baroque instrument craze started in the mid to late 70s, it was in response to that romantic view of Baroque music. In the the 60s and 7s purists were screaming in horror when listening to recordings of HV Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic performing Bach concerti and suites with full size symphonic strings. I have myself LPs of them playing the Brandenburg concertos. The entire string section of the orchestra is playing (that is at least fifty musicians) not including additional winds and brass and of course amplified harpsichord. It is interesting listening to them.
What I notice here is nonsense: an ensemble masterfully playing Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, but "using" Claudio Abbado as conductor - with their hands and not from an instrument, which would be usual - something totally unnecessary and , clearly, is acting as a "cake doll" as a marketing "attraction hook." I don't know about you, but it makes me even ashamed to see him making a fool of himself by being "painted", doing a conduction figuration, when the orchestra clearly plays by itself. @@patrickbotti2357

It is very fast. Musicologists disagree on the right tempo for all of those concertos and indeed for a lot of the music of the Baroque period. Because of the construction, shape and characteristics of baroque violins, and shorter bows, forcing shorter and faster bowings, it is easier in some instances (as is the case with this concerto) to play faster and also softer. But there is fast and there is fast. In the same video recordings watch the 5th Brandenburg. The tempi are incredibily fast. I don't know how that amazing harpsichordist can manage to play that fast...
Might as well slap Bach in the face with this kind of playing. The first movement (which is NOT allegro as stated in the time stamp) sounds like a noisy argument at a pub. Everyone screaming to be heard over the other.
Well, I may respectfully disagree. First, remember that you are watching video recording with a mixing/producing that is the result of choices made by the sound engineers and producers. You should listen to the actual CD audio recording of those same performances. It is totally different, more balanced, less aggressive. I don't know if it was recorded with the same setup as for the video or different mics were used. My take is that it was the same mics for both but with a different post production audio mixing. Second, The issue with these performances is that they are done with a mixture of ancient instruments (or reproduction of) and modern instruments. For example, the concertmaster (a very well known and amazing Italian baroque violinist), plays a baroque violin, with a baroque bow (shorter and slightly different curvature) and catgut strings. Other violinists and violas play modern violins. In the 6th Brandenburg concerto there is a mix of modern violas and viola da gamba for example. For all six concertos, the musicians are all playing using the tuning at 440.
The bowing on a baroque violin (or viola, or cello, or bass), and therefore the articulation and phrasing is different than on modern instruments. Remember also that we are still not totally sure how that music was performed at the time, despite the advances in scholarly research. Regarding the tempo for the first movement, it is difficult to say. We, professional conductors, always have to make a decision on tempos, when there is no tempo indication from the composer. We do it first by looking at the time signature. In this case, it is a cut-time (2/2) which would imply that it would have to be conducted in two and therefore it would have to be fast. However, there are other parameters we take into consideration to mitigate this assumption: The articulation possible at a given tempo on an instrument, also depending if the instrument is a period instrument or modern. Can a very difficult passage be played very fast on a specific instrument? Is it possible nowadays with modern instruments? Was it possible on period instruments?We know that period instruments such as baroque violins have shorter bows, gut strings, and therefore cannot sustain notes the way a modern violin can.... Thus the articulation is going to be very different from what we are used to if we only listen to modern instruments. If you watch the performance attentively, you will see that the principal violin solo plays a baroque violin contrary to the other ones. You can compare the articulation and bowing on his violin to the other violins....The tension of the catgut strings on the instrument is much less important than on a modern violin with steel (or sometimes nylon) strings which have a far greater tension on the instrument. As I mention above, this in turn forces the player to have shorter and faster bows, with rapid and short articulations in dynamics. Also, less tension on the strings along with the characteristics of the baroque bow makes it that the sound is less "focused" as more harmonics will be heard, contrary to a modern violin which produces heavier fundamentals, therefore focusing the pitch more clearly... Now, personally, I conduct the first movement of the 1st Brandenburg slower and in a 4 beat pattern. My two cents!
