I love this piece. I play the euphonium, and we have a wonderful transcription of this magnificent work done for us. So very glad for this wonderful performance and its availability. Thank you for posting it.
The musicality of these masters is incredible. They are perfectly synchronized, every tempo change is perfect. It is such a privilege to witness and enjoy this performance!
Too much attachments on standard versions, by some critical comments... Just opening spirit, and listening as a new story, and beauty and deep joy will enter in full range into your heart...
As a cellist, it's hard for me to say anything negative about Maisky (even less about Martha). I grew up with his recording of Arpeggione from the 80's (or 90's, I don't remember). Already in that recording, the tempo fluctuations were notorious. Perhaps this is not the best performance of Maisky and Argerich, the rubati and tempo changes are even more exaggerated and Maisky's intonation is not the best, however, things have to be put in context. Considering how difficult the Arpeggione sonata is, that Maisky goes out to play it from memory and at his age, it is truly remarkable. Having said that, I think this performance is brilliant. 👍👍
Thank you for your observations. Only someone that plays the cello can notice this tempo variations. It's always good to get comments that contribute something from someone that know what she/he is talking about. Once more thank you for bringing thus up.
I noticed the tempo fluctuations (not a cellist). I found them funny and thought - isn't this a bit too much? But then the quality of their play and their listening goes beyond those irritations and it's just wonderful.
Almost all interpretations have the WEIRDEST idea of "Allegro Moderato" and I too find the tempo fluctuations far too excessive, sometimes by as much as half or double speed.
I discovered this sonata in the version of Rostropovich/Britten th-cam.com/video/8CW6S4gRahY/w-d-xo.html that remains my reference - with more "stable" tempo and, useless to say, a superb cello playing
I’m a cellist and also play the piano, and I have great admiration for both musicians. However, this is not a version I resonate with. I prefer a more whimsical interpretation
The music is one of those miracles of art that makes me feel reconciled to mortality. The playing is magical -- somehow these two did a mind-meld before they started the performance so that every rubato, every dynamic gesture, every phrase was as if one mind were performing. Maisky is not technically flawless, but, seriously, is that bothering you?
Is this recording perhaps a few years old and from a concerthall in hamburg? Because I had the privilege do witness them perform this piece a few years back and it was stunning!
Personally, I think they are not strict enough with the tempo. sure , Schubert was a romantic fellow, but his music is in a style of his time, which feels right when it’s played as they played at that time, which was fairly orthodox; this is not Chopin or Rachmaninov!
Correct me if I am wrong. I just feel Mischa Maisky doesn't play as well as he was when he was younger. I just felt nervous when I am listening to his playing, feeling afraid that he may make some unwanted sound. How do you feel about his performance?
Perhaps he want to improvise a little bit from the origin piece. Mischa Maisky love to bring lots variation to his piece that he played. In my opinion. As for me to say iam not much care for the difference. Sometimes other variation and interpretation can still be beautiful.
Careful! I was once listening to a "Bach Busker" in Leicester Square. He bravely had a go at the Bach Chaconne but half-way through his memory failed. I hummed him the next phrase and he foolishly offered me his violin. I carried on through to the end and then collected over £100 for him!@@montesmarcelo5749

Maisky was a student of Rostropovitch. And it is so evident here. My favourite cellist, one of the greatest.
I totally agree! ❤
Li trovo incantevoli.
Recensione perfetta.
Mil gracias
