This is the piece that first introduced me to classical music forty-five years ago. I heard it come over the radio while I was at work and it was so powerful that I had to stop and listen. I was paralyzed by both its bright and haunting movements. Especially the third movement which captivated me almost to tears. After work, I rushed to the local record store and, since I didn't know what the music was, whistled a portion of the third movement to the clerk from memory. After only a single measure, the clerk started whistling along with me! What a hoot! He then walked over and brought me Bach's 5th and 6th Brandenburg concertos - I've been in love ever since.
Mine was a similar story, I was calling a business on the phone and the music on hold was the first movement, and I was immediately amazed by the effect it had on me, I eventually traced it back to the Brandenburg concertos and Bach has been my favourite composer ever since.
Great! I can add about my first hearing of this opus: imagine knowing it in the interpretation of Wendy Carlos, at synth (switched-on Bach). Those unreal plyphony, in unreal timbres, panning in unreal space... And execution is superb.
Danusha and Simone were in top shape for that one, and really nailed it. And the joy of music can be seen flowing between them specially in the third movement.
Excellent playing of this great concerto. I have been listening to it and the other Brandenburgs for 65 years and this one of the best. And seeing the players is so great . You Tube does a very good job in this respect.
The final movement is so "spot on" it brought me to tears. Bach would be pleased to hear his masterful works played at such a professional level. This is my favorite performance of the 6th as well.
1:59 I can't get enough of this moment where the theme's in minor, the soloists playing it perfectly, and with the delicate harpsichord as the incing on top.
This is my favorite of the six brandenburgian, made magical my adolescence (many years ago) Dario from Argentina Este es mi preferido entre los seis brandeburgueses , hizo mágica mi adolescencia (hacen muchos años) Dario desde Argentina
The instrumentation with two violas, instead of violins, gives this a special feeling, and I just adore how this group of musicians, Orchestra Mozart, also can handle Bach.
Hey Staffan, not "two violas, instead of violins". Was composed by Bach for TWO VIOLAS. You cannot think on violins or whatever, because never was in Bach's head
It's a final phase of the supreme bliss that listen to Brandenburg's No. 6they play with breathtaking skill and magnificent technique while looking at the splendid footage . Without Brandenburg's No. 6, the all of Brandenburg's works would have been very lonely , and the enjoyment and pleasures of Brandenburg's works would have been less , and I would feel that Brandenburg is like the taste of stale beer From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
@@lukefowler9740 And beautifully played out. What's really nice is the joke appears to be shared between the two and we almost wish we were 'sharing' that conversation - which indeed, in a way, we are!
Best performance ever of my very favorite piece of music. Wonderfully executed, full of the joy of human cooperation to achieve this precious wonder. Well, I've made my point... :-)
By far, my favorite composer. I love his music since i saw "Love story", with Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neal. She was a music student and played the harpsichord .
And then , when the violas meet, Danusha Waskiewicz and Simone Jandl, in the second movement, at 5:50 it is like heaven for me. They are small-talking to this wunderful cembalist, Ottavio Dantone, and then there is the contrabas, of course. The result can not be better.
This is a remarkable version with such dedicated players who let the lines just happens, I love the way Danusha begiins the last movt. Never forcing but letting the rhythm just spring out organically. I think it was just great for Abbado not to be on stage for the 6th.
As violin was named as small viola, (viola, -ino) , it has shown its entire charm to the people, and this piece still shine as the most charming part to Brandenburg concertos, even though it was composed firstly? among others. I enjoy listening and plays these pieces and be proud that I belong to this instruments group.
The 1st movement of Brandenburg concerto no 6 is my favorite jazz,. which J.S.Bach already composed long time ago. When I hear this jazz, my heart starts to dance. However, all modern and new jazzes are all too, too boring.
A me sembra un divino amplesso, col dovuto rispetto.
They're using modern violas with classical bows, in style they look c1800. It's a bit of a compromise, even more weird when you factor in the viola da gambas and harpsichord, that's like a 400 year range of equipment!
I see it is a phrasing issue. The difference between 4 bites in a stroke and separate bowings is noticeable. When I posted my question I had not yet seen the rest of the video. I'm not sure I prefer this to the Freiburg players, but this is a marvelous performance of a magnificent piece.

Absolutely Marvellous !. There is much joy and soul here. Superb balance. A superb, unbeatable performance x x .
How beautiful is the world without violins!
what? the world without violins would be hell...
As a retired violinist I must agree with you on this one...those lower register stringed instruments were angelical.
And bloody adverts!
Without violas it would be way worse, because then there is no melody at al in this piece :)

So rhythmic and so beautiful.
Maybe my favourite of the Brandenburgs, perhaps because it is so rare for the violas to be given the limelight like this.
That was absolutely devine. Third movement particularly. All played with obvious pleasure by the musicians. Bravo

best version I have heard so far yet...
I love the 'conversation' between the two violas (Danusha Waskiewicz, Simone Jandl)
This is actually the original viola joke written by Bach - they're supposed to be in unison ;)

Cello needed to be louder for his counterpoint.
It is Carmignola, no Camignola.
I cannot understand how did they tune the viola da gamba to A=440Hz? Did they change the strings?
Bflat major...interesting for the strings....the ripieno have a holiday or did Bach write this way.

It is interesting tat they use barroque instruments but modern bows ?
The bows are not modern, you can see they have an upward arch (clearly visible at the tip op the bow).
They're using modern violas with classical bows, in style they look c1800. It's a bit of a compromise, even more weird when you factor in the viola da gambas and harpsichord, that's like a 400 year range of equipment!
I thought that Baroque violins do not have chin and shoulder rests
You're right, This is not a baroque execution. But I like them anyway 😉
Why are the bass instruments bowing 4 notes to a stroke? Very restrictive.
It's not restrictive if you have good technique... it helps phrasing in longer arcs.
I see it is a phrasing issue. The difference between 4 bites in a stroke and separate bowings is noticeable. When I posted my question I had not yet seen the rest of the video.
I'm not sure I prefer this to the Freiburg players, but this is a marvelous performance of a magnificent piece.
It's in the score. Isn't it?
