Zimbabwe's Shona community living in Kenya launch bid for citizenship

  • Over 60 years ago, thousands of Shona people left their ancestral homes in what is today part of Zimbabwe, to spread their religious beliefs across East Africa. Although they've retained their heritage, they have since integrated into Kenyan communities. And now they've launched a bid for Kenyan citizenship. CGTN's Wilkister Nyabwa has more.

    Finally December 12th 2020 the Shona community was granted citizenship by the kenya government.
    It's official now shona is the 45th tribe in kenya. Welcome to our community my brothers and sisters..am always proud of you.the most disciplined community.
    Karibuni sana..they speak kikuyu language.

      The Kenyan government does not sell citizenship that easily. There are Arabs and Indians and Whites who have been here since before independence and still don't have documents.
      Kenya has 100,000 stateless people so you know nothing

      @@theturkanabus3610 I think you're the one who knows nothing. These are fellow Africans who have lived in that country for well more than half a century who surely deserve to be treated as citizens of that country officially.

      @@Mbiriyababaproductions length of stay means nothing. The path to citizenship has always been clear: get married to a citizen, stay married for at least 7 years, then apply for citizenship.

    They should rather push for Zimbabwean citizenship and passport through the zimbabwean consulate in Kenya. I think the zimbabwean authorities will feel their plight more than the kenyan government. if they can get even temporary documentation from the consulate then travel to Zim for ID's which they can use to travel around and probably get temporary residence and the like from Kenya it's a better way of solving the issue... But what I know is lots of african governments complicate issues for no reason, this is actually a very simple thing to solve.

    dennis mahacker, We are all Africans. u are heartless, selfish and cruel.u did nor get the story right. check other channels for more enlightment. These people's parents came to East Africa in the 60's and 70's with the British to spread the gospel as missionaries. they used travel passports written on them United Kingdom. later on it became difficult for the m to attain National ID's. They were born in Kenya by Zimbabwean parents. stop being tribalistic.Wether Ndebele or Shona it shouldn't bother you. Kenya is the only country in Africa which has hosted millions of refugees for more than 50 yrs. check and read. Kenyans love pple and have sympathy. The largest refugee camps can be found in Kenya. We live with pple from D r, congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somaalia, the Nubians from Egypt and we love them as brothers. No xenophobia in Kenya. 'Hakuna Matata' 'no worries'. The real Mt. Zion is he re...God's resting place. Iam sure our government will give them citizenship. don't worry they are not claiming anything of yours. You have no love for your people.

      @@lillianmhanduu how do you expect them to speak shona when they left Zimbabwe 60 years ago? Do you think all these new generation Zimbabwean babies born all around the world can speak their languages. Does that stop them from been Zimbabwean? As far as I am concerned they have as much right to claim their Zimbabwean birthright as any Zimbabwean born inside the country. So many Malawian born Zimbabweans have adopted either shona or Ndebele in Zimbabwe and cannot speak their languages. I think it unfair to deny these Stateless people their heritage. Both Zimbabwe and Kenya should look into their plight.

    These are lies, Shona people are only in Zimbabwe .Don’t try to interrupt our perfect Zimbabwean history. We don’t have any associations with North, East or the Western Africa. Don’t even try that. Soon they’ll want to be part of the Great Shona people.

    • @HANDOLOH
      @HANDOLOH 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You seem not to know much about Zimbabwean history. Zims migrated all the way from Central Africa years back some settled in Kenya and others continued the journey South. To be precise l think the Zims are directly related to the Luhya people of Kenya they are the same people that headed South. So many words are similar between the Zims and Luhya and also physical features .Plus just being Bantu also means the Zim languages closely resemble many Bantu languages of Kenya even Kiswahili.
