  • Christmas celebrations started early for the 1,670 stateless Shona people and 1,300 stateless people of Rwandan descent who were awarded Kenyan citizenship recently. The Shona people came to Kenya from Zimbabwe and settled in the country and were never recognized as citizens until recently. Take a look;

    No African person or person of African descent should ever be "stateless" in Africa...Periodt! These borders that we "confine" ourselves in are just pegs for marking territories put there by our colonizers when they were dividing the land of Africa among themselves ........ don't let them separate us and pull us apart! Let's learn to respect, accept and accommodate each other as Africans and as black people PLEASE! I hope our gvt leaders wake up to this fact!

      @@victoriayoung5263 That may be so, but the bigger picture is that they're no longer stateless and can now access all the services indigenous Kenyans can. Sometimes when these things happen, there's a small price to pay in terms of losing a little bit of your heritage. As a Kenyan, I'm very glad to officially have them as one of us and I do hope that there's an initiative among themselves, or between them and the government to officially document their journey so far.

    I felt a lump in my throat on hearing Kenyan leader recognised Shona people as Kenyan citizens. In the past all we heard were nothing but atrocities of Africans towards each other in extreme cases even genocides. Now they have culture, wealth and dignity just like any othe developed country. The Chinese saying is when you have food and able to cloth yourself you will then understand fame and shame. 衣食足而知荣辱.

      The moment they were recognized as a Community in Kenya, by default, their language becomes one of Kenya's languages. That said, Shona and Swahili are very close, so its a language similar to many Kenyan Bantu languages. It fits easily.

      They were British citizen's until Zimbabwe got independence and UK changed its laws on citizenship to exclude them... To be Zimbabwean, those from the first group would have to get Zimbabwean citizenship, then their descendents, which doesn't cover everyone.
      Besides Zimbabwean citizenship comes with limitations in living in Kenya. Kenya could have opted to get them an exemption of some sort, to keep staying in Kenya until they can naturalize.

    The next logical step is for the constitution to enable them choose their representative in the legislature under the minority groups. The same goes to other minority groups like Europeans, Nubians, etc, so that they can also feel represented. After all they don't have any region to call theirs and through which, they can elect parliamentary representatives. This is how its done in any upright, humane democracy.
